Perhaps because I got busted for underage drinking on golf courses or suburban skyline lookout spots too many times in my youth, or because I am probably the most shamelessly-cautious defensive driver in the world, yet have been pulled over and ticketed for speeding more than anyone I know, or maybe it was the time I was given a sobriety test and verbally berated roadside when I hadn't had a drop to drink that night, but I happen to utterly despise cops. That whole cartoon image of the whistling policeman, tipping his hat to ladies on the street, swirling his night-stick more like a parade-leader's baton than a beat-down weapon? Yeah, not how I picture my cops. My cops have it out for me and always will. And yet when two of our Boys In Blue walked through the doors at Windsor Cafe and took up seats at the counter, I smiled. Sincerely. Why would I do this? Were they not the enemy? Had I entered some bizarro realm? There's too much color in here to be Pleasantville circa 1958. Or Mayberry circa 1960-68. Or really, any fictional black-and-white town with Don Knotts. The truth of the matter is Windsor Cafe has a truly special local feel to it, a flagship representative to the neighborhood at-large. Every member of the staff is upbeat, friendly, and attentive. Their breakfast food is ideal diner grub, served hot and quick, especially their super-satisfying Challah Bread French Toast, with a side of bacon that's always cooked crispy and well done. Or maybe you prefer a side of sausage, links sliced lengthwise and griddled butterfly-style - which is totally helpful to someone as clumsy as I am and is known to have trouble piercing the plump suckers with my fork to clamp 'em down and cut 'em, and instead ends up launching 'em off my plate and at my date. Thank you, Windsor Cafe, for pre-slicing my sausage like you would with a child. Their coffee is a little terrible, to be honest, but that's not what I usually go to diners for anyway. Nine times out of ten, it's for breakfast, as discussed - even if it's supposed to be dinnertime. But I also go for the atmosphere. And their slogan is spot-on: "Good Food! Good Company! Good Times!" There's a bit of an unspoken camaraderie at Windsor Cafe, where everyone's a friend, everyone's just happy to be there, and everyone deserves a smile. Even cops. read more

To the person that ordered a martini - please leave Windsor Cafe (and Yelp, altogether). This place rules - never a bad meal here. Omelettes are huge and they actually listen to your weird requests (home fries well-done, please!). Your coffee cup is always full. Sides of bacon come with 6 slices, so yeah. The burgers are SO juicy and delicious, the fries are awesome (those crispy ones with slight seasoning that everyone loves and can never find). Delivery is always fast as hell, but I live a block away, so nevermind. Everyone that works here is so sweet and friendly! Credit card minimum of $15, so you almost always have to buy a cookie on the way out :) No jalapeños though??? :-( read more

Great little diner in Windsor terrace! They have a large menu BUT I have only been there for breakfast. My favorite is the fruit tutty belgian waffle! Freshly made belgian waffle, loaded with tons of strawberries, bananas (+/- raisins) and coated with powdered sugar (and whipped cream if you so desire)! They offer Brunch specials on the weekends served with mimosa or sangria. Looking forward to trying that out soon. I don't know if they have liquor but they have beer and wine :) The tables are kind of close together and can be a tad uncomfortable. I will def continue to visit this venue :) read more

This is the best neighborhood diner/restaurant in the area. The service is great, the atmosphere is laid back and relaxed and the food is delicious. The menu is vast and includes copious options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My favorite thing to eat is "The Fez" wrap. They also make a great burger. We came here after brunch because there was a sign for hot cider inside (score!). We got in there and luckily some guys were leaving their seats at the bar so we snagged them. Bartender was attentive and fine, got two rounds of drinks and they were delicious! I think they changed names so its now Windsor Diner. The food was fine but the service was terrible! It felt like our waitress was ignoring us. It took 15-20 minutes before a server came over and then another 10 minutes before we got our drinks. My friend did not get her meal and the waitress didn't say anything. She never came back after she dropped off the other meals so we couldn't ask about our friend's meal, refills, or ask for napkins. My friend also ordered an entree with a soup or salad but never got it. Still gave a 20% tip out of obligation, but not coming back. read more

After a long, long, long night in an unfamiliar location, I needed food. Like fast - my stomach was making noises that really sounded like it was trying to threaten me. This amused the DP to no end, but I was not taking it anymore. I was like, dude, I need food. So he brought me here. I was so tempted to have pancakes and eggs, but it was 3 pm and maybe I wanted a sandwich instead. A cheese sandwich. A cheddar cheese sandwich. With tomato. And I got said sandwich, and it was good. Hot and melty, with a crispy toasted outside and tomato juices mixing with the cheese. *homer drool* I also got a a side of onion rings, and holy sh*t they were amazing. Crunchy and flavorful and not as greasy as I would have thought. I couldn't eat them all, so I took the rest home. And ate them there. The DP had a mountain of a Reuben Sandwich and he inhaled it. Along with his french fries. I didn't poach the fries this time as I was diligently munching on my onion rings. This place only gets a star because it was close enough for me to walk to. They burnt my silver dollar pancakes, over-cooked my roommate's eggs (that's not a euphemism) and took a half an hour to do it. The menu is standard diner fare and the staff, while friendly, seemed to be overwhelmed by a normal-sized brunch crowd. A quick peek back into the kitchen revealed one guy scrambling eggs, and three others watching him. Note to short order cooks of Windsor Cafe: it doesn't take three guys to scramble three eggs. Windsor has a brunch menu and the drinks are actually good, but they also have your diner standbys. my most recent time here - yesterday - I actually got the hot open-faced turkey sandwich again, and it was just as good as I recall. I've also had some great Mediterranean chicken wraps here. the chicken and rice soup doesn't taste like Campbell's or Progresso, it's the real deal here. definitely what I needed during the sub-zero temperatures this Sunday! the service is great and friendly. if there's a line, well, it's worth the wait. read more

I love this Dinner for brunch! My friend and I go some Saturdays after running in Prospect park to feed our hungry bellies. We share an ommelette and a waffle with vanilla ice cream and bananas on top. I have to say eating them at the same time is pretty incredible. We're pretty hooked on it. Service is good but usually slower because of the crowd on Saturday and Sunday mornings until the early afternoon. There are several reasons that Windsor Cafe is among my favorite choices for grabbing a quick and inexpensive bite: 1) The neighborhood's best chicken salad. Mercifully, it's not exactly the same as every other eatery's. Kudos to the kitchen. 2) Order a side of sauteed spinach, and you get *fresh* spinach, cooked to order. If you're wondering why it might take a few minutes longer than some other restaurants, it's because they don't have a cauldron of the stuff fermenting on the back burner all afternoon. 3) The friendly staff becomes even more welcoming when they start recognizing you as a local/regular. Most of the things here are average to just a little sub-par. Nothing is exceptional. A few things are awful. Burgers weren't packed well for delivery, are probably pretty good at the place. Pizza was a pita, topped with marinara sauce and deli sliced cheese. The outlines of the cheese squares were still visible, there was no bubble or burn on the cheese or the pita. So here's the thing with Windsor Cafe', IT TAKES FRICKEN 45 MINUTED TO GET YOUR FOOD. It's a diner, which means it should have relatively quick service. Now as another yelper below stated he got to peak through to the kitchen, well my table was caught between 3 families arguing over their favorite baseball teams ( of course the on going " im a die hard yankees/mets fan conversation" and on they go. My point is its a very closely packed space, with not much room that you feel you are caught in other peoples conversations. A nice diner with a pretty good tasting peanut butta banana shake. They gave me the xtra in anotha cup- nice! Got the disco fries with mozzarella insteada cheddar. Comes with gravy. Pretty good and is basically poutine which I absolutely adore. My compadre got the blt. Looked standard, no complaints from him but honestly he will eat anything and pretty much likey. For my first sandwich in NY I wanted Corned Beef, to we ordered a Rueben (my husband and I split- Have to stay light on the feet for lots of walking. ) The sandwich was OK, came with fries, but I have to say it wasn't the best corned beef I have ever had. It was very lean but I like that very thin sliced stuff like I get at the New York New York casino in Las Vegas. This review is pretty straightforward. Simply put, Windsor Cafe is a diner hidden away in this part of Windsor Terrace. The food can be really great or really mediocre depending on what you order, but to that end they offer a huge selection of things to choose from: burgers, fried food, pasta, salads, paninis, wraps, sandwiches, breakfast food, steaks, etc. I usually have no problems with their triple deckers or their windsor burger. Sometimes the food can be overwhelming in terms of portion size but hey you get your money's worth. After some running at prospect park, my friend and I decided to find a spot to eat and as usual, with all post-exercise procedures, make sure we ate back up all the calories burned! We stumbled upon Windsor Cafe which was fairly close by to the F train station was well. I'm usually an omelette or burger person when it comes to local diners so I decided to go with the mushroom burger with fries. The fries were very good and crispy. The burger wasn't bad nor amazing although I did ask for it to be cooked medium rare and got a well done instead, no biggie though. My friend ordered an omelette which was very large in proportion The service was prompt and the server was very chill. I don't know whether it was the large HD television hanging by the bar table, the brick walls or just my stomach talking, but for some reason it also had a good local diner vibe to it. This is a good diner in a perfect location with a large menu and the prices were pretty cheap. For the amount of food you get (About 9 bucks for my burger with fries, tomatoes, lettuce and pickle), you can't go wrong. Will definitely stop by again if I'm around. read more

This place has a great, laid back atmosphere. It's perfect for a diner breakfast, and the eggs and coffee are always up to par. Usually the manager can tell if you're in a rush and will pick up the pace. I really enjoyed breakfast here. It's crowded so you know it's good. It's not overly crowded though so you can actually walk in and get a table immediately. The service is fast and the food is absolutely delicious! I had a Greek omelette with tater tots but it was difficult to choose because the entire menu sounds delicious. It's a large menu - but well laid out - so you have tons of options but you won't get lost in them. I did receive a fork with some crud on it but the waiter immediately took it away and gave me clean utensils. He had a classic brooklyn accent so the place really felt like home. Only been here once but I really liked the atmosphere of the place. I am all for diners/low-key places and this place fits the bill since they serve breakfast and not-so-much "brunch" - perfect for my tastes. For 10a on a Saturday it was pleasantly full and we were seated at the counter. I just moved from Gowanus to South Slope and was in need of a new diner to have my weekend breakfast. My fiancee and I stopped into Windsor Cafe expecting a standard diner and we were treated to just a little more. The food was good and the service was friendly. They can be a little slow but they're always packed, so it makes sense. We've stopped by for dinner too and it was equally as good. FYI: The chopped steak is massive so buyer beware. We still prefer the Fifth Avenue Diner, for sentimental reasons and the service, but the Windsor Cafe is no slouch either. read more

One look at the menu and you're instantly reminded of a diner and not a cafe. The food is pretty average, but its the only thing within walking distance of the park besides Circles Cafe. The service was a bit slow, but it was a packed house that morning. A positive was their fries...reminded me of Burger King.
