Decent Food + Low Prices This is a great spot if you're looking for a quick meal at a local joint. For $7.50 I got a burger with fries. And when I say affordable, I mean that sometimes we get the check and think that they missed charging us for something because it's so low. Most places in NYC try to be fancy and charge you an arm and a leg for a breakfast that isn't even good. Here, I get two eggs up, bacon, potatoes, and toast, with coffee included for about $5. It's a small, locally owned and run business with the same three employees every time. Since we're regulars, we walk in and our regular order is put in right away. This place was awful. I went for breakfast. The place was kinda empty, but it's was week day, so I wasn't overly concerned. After being seat and presented with a menu, I asked the server how were the grits there. Her response was "we always sell out". So I ordered them. Needless to say by my one star, that they weren't good. Other than tasting a smidgen of the grits, looking under the eggs, and moving the meat around a little, I pretty much left the greasy dish the same as it arrived. Uneaten. I hope they didn't serve it to someone else after I left. Judging by the reviews, people like the place. Maybe I just went on a bad day. That happens sometimes. read more

Brunch = a weekend ritual for twenty-something New Yorkers involving the sharing of the first meal of the day with friends after a night of debauchery. Brunch can occur any time after noon and before 5 p.m. on either Saturday or Sunday and serves as a great way to catch up with friends over moderately priced food as well as bloody marys, mimosas or several glasses of champagne. That being said, this is not a place for brunch. Although they advertise brunch here on Saturday and Sunday, it's not worth your dime. I got good ol' steak and egg's - an American Classic - and the egg's were runnier then an oil spill on Jed Clampitt's front lawn. My dining partner is crime got a vegetable omelet, and the vegetables were not't even cooked into the omelets. It's almost as if they cooked the egg and threw the vegetables in raw. Plus that, by my mimosa was $7! When a brunch mimosa is almost as much as the meal, there an issue. I like brunch places where a mimosa is included with the meal or at least under five bux. Although the place has a nice ambiance with eating outside, thumbs down for pricing and food. They say you get what you pay for, but not in the case of the Union Street Cafe. read more

After walking in the hot, hot sun, my friend and I walked in here thinking it looked kind of chill and would be air conditioned. We were right about the a/c and it felt so good (1 star). The service was fairly prompt, not friendly or attentive. The diet coke was low in syrup and carbonation. We ordered our food (breakfast fare) and it came out in a timely manner. Unfortunately, it wasn't good. I ordered the bagel with cream cheese and lox. There was sooo much lox and so little cream cheese. I had to ask for more. My friend ordered the eggs benedict and didn't like it. The homefries that came with it weren't cooked very well. He didn't finish and ordered fries (that's how bad it was). Somehow the cook messed up the fries too! Before we left, I used the restroom. It was pretty nasty, poorly lit and stinky (but not in the way you'd expect). Stayed in Park Slope for a few days, found Union Cafe my first, and ate here every morning. It's nothing special, but a bacon omelette, potatoes, toast, coffee, and a small o.j. only cost $6.25.
