We were looking for a good breakfast after a night out that wasn't too pricey and stumbled upon Mary's. While they have all the traditional breakfast fare, I was so happy to see it also had a Caribbean twist to it. I couldn't help myself--I had to order rice and beans with pernil (pork shoulder) and a side of sweet plantains. Of course, I wanted some actual breakfast items, so we got the French toast loaded with fruit. We also got both the tres and quatro golpes, which is a traditional Dominican breakfast. Lastly, we got a Caribbean omelet. My rice and pernil was solid. The rice could've used a tad bit more seasoning but when mixed with the side of beans and plantains plus a drizzle of hot sauce it was perfect. They had a variety of sauces--Tabasco (my fave), a Jamaican one that was super spicy, and a mild homemade one. The tres/quatro golpes was also a hearty choice with mangu (mashed plantain), sausage, fried cheese, and eggs. The pickled red onion balanced everything out. The fried cheese is similar to a halloumi but I think it's a bit more flavorful. All the flavors just melt together in your mouth perfectly. The French toast and omelet were good. I'd say the Caribbean items stole the show though. The place has a typical diner vibe and is on the small side. Food was served quickly and service was good. Discount if you pay in cash. They have 'Breakfast All Day' and some really good options for Lunch and more, a pretty diverse menu with lots of Choice that are Central and South American. Here is the order I placed, in store, on 09/28/19: All Day Breakfast: Two eggs, scrambled with cheese, corned beef hash and grits (Comes with Toast and Coffee/Tea) Alt/Special Request: Rye toast, Coffee with cream and sugar   Quoted Total: ~$8.00 **Restaurant only accepts cash. I had ordered from them for pickup in the days prior, and my friend had gone to get it. For some reason there was a delay (after picking up the food) so when it reached me it was room temp. This isn't their fault and I purposely didn't write a review then. I did appreciate the large portion size so it was easy to decide on revisiting Mary's a few mornings later. Unfamiliar with Brooklyn and haaaaaating the struggle for parking I reluctantly ventured out to find Marys. To my surprise, even with a smidge of construction out front, I was able to pull right into a space across the street in front of the laundromat. I hustled inside and sat right down at a stool at the counter. A young lady asked for my order (see above) and I waited, taking in the quaint atmosphere. Every table was occupied with a couple eating breakfast from large oval platters. People came in and out shouting various greetings loudly showing how familiar they were the ladies staffing the shop. At some point a older gentleman came in and flirted, pretty persistently, and a woman working caught the signal and helped me out: "Your husband said he's pulling up. We are packing up his food." I smiled and said thank you. The gentleman must have taken the hint and eventually moved on. I thought it was sweet that she had cared enough to notice his lingering. I had been drinking my coffee at the counter while waiting but another full cup was included with to-go bag. I hadnt thought to look-for or ask about payment before then and found that they dont take cash. Their ATM was out of order or empty and I was advised to go across the street to the laundromat to get cash. When I returned I paid and grabbed my food, walked briskly to my car only to find that I had been boxed in. I can almost understand the need to parallel park in the city now. The car I inevitably had to wait for was another Marys Coffee Shop patron. I drank my coffee on the ride home and enjoyed the meal even more than I had the prior time. Large helping of grits, cheesy eggs, buttered rye toast, and corned beef hash (a country favorite) fried hard so its crispy and savory all at the same time. A good first meal can sometimes have an effect on the way you feel about the rest of the days events. Breakfast at Mary's really helped put some positivity on the hustle and bustle of the city. I will absolutely be eating here again and recommending it to anyone looking for breakfast in the area. read more

It's a small place, no doubt, and that's one of the reasons why I love it. Little places like this are always the biggest surprises. The service here is top notch. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with smiles from all the employees - which can be something that's a little more rare to see in these parts. They were all very welcoming and engaging. Been a longtime customer since the days they were Elisa coffee shop at Myrtle and Troop near the supermarket now a residential building. The food is excellent and I am a very picky Dominican raised with authentic home cooked Dominican food, don't do much outside food but definitely eat here. Not only the food is great but one thing they do well at is customer service. I don't remember EVER getting an attitude on the phone in the 13 years I have been a customer of this specific group (Elisa coffee shop). Example, my wife and I moved to Delaware, and every time we come to visit in the past 6 months this is an obligatory stop. We ordered a pair of "mangú con los tres golpes. And a morir soñando." We know this hour is busy but they calmly took the order, apparently while giving the order to the one preparing the order he felt weird so he called back in a minute to confirm was two identical orders. read more

WOW...I thought I would be the first to review Mary's...This is a Dominican American restaurant...I have ordered all kinds of things from here because the are really good and about 2 blocks from where I work...I had the following from there: Breakfast: Cheese Grits, Turkey Bacon or Regular Bacon, Egg and Cheese Sandwiches, French Toast,etc... Lunch: Fried Pork Chops, Pepper Steak, Chicharron De Pollo (Fried Chicken Crackling), Mondongo(Tripe Soup), Chicken Soup, Stewed Chicken, Stewed Beef, Yellow or White Rice, Beans...etc... and all of it has been good. You can even order off of the menu and personalize your order and they end up making at least 3 deliveries a day to our office per day...one thing you must order is a 1/2 &1/2 with your food. Its the best drink, which is a simple mix of half lemonade half ice tea. I really don't have any complaints about this place. If I really had to, it would be that it sucks ordering delivery around 12pm because it gets packed around lunch time...but that's actually a good thing... Me and a friend came here for lunch. This place is small, clean and full of flavor, plus the music was lit. This is a Latino joint w/ a coffee shop flavor. I had a grilled chicken salad with fries. The chicken was so good, that I killed my salad. My friend had a burger and before we could look up at each other, we had finished our food. This place is a neighborhood spot, un-gentrified. Folks came in for coffee, some sat down and chatted for a bit, others came in and ordered from their already made hot dishes, like guiso de res y arroz amarillo y bacalao, etc. Service was amazing! In the years since we've moved from the area, Mary's continues to be the point of reference my wife and I use for breakfast. In a later neighborhood we found a pretty good cafe, with roughly similar -- though not quite as satisfying -- breakfast offerings, and we took to calling that place "Fake Mary's." Every now and then when I make an acceptable egg-and-cheese sandwich, she compliments me: "Mm, almost as good as Fake Mary's." But why settle for Fake Mary's when you can have the original? They deliver! Only real downsides: it seems like they're never open when you want them to be; and like most restaurants in the area it's not really a place you go to. Really great spot for a nice family breakfast, we visited from out of town and searched all over yelp for a spot to fit our party of 9 that also would do breakfast & lunch (brunch). This place was perfect, we found parking not too far plus they were able to see us all (we called first). Great menu selection, coffee was good, just a tip guys.... make sure the little kids food comes out before the adults, our littlest one waited over 20 minutes for order of fries after all us had all food.
