We didn't know what to expect from the restaurant, meaning that we had made reservations just from Yelp and some Ai description pointers. This is an open floor plan, modern decor restaurant complete with a lengthy bar area. It is very open and modern except for the kitchen, which remains partially visible through windows from the main dining area. It was a Wednesday night and was surprisingly slow at 6:30, in terms of the crowd, or lack thereof, with only three other tables occupied during our visit. Our server, Jonathon, was very polite, attentive, and professional. Especially in contrast to my observation of the other server, whom I observed going through the motions of waiting in tables like a bored veteran server who might have been half drunk. Just an observation, but he kind of had our attention while serving a nearby table. He clearly knew what he was doing and mostly pulled off a good job, it was mostly timing and tone of voice and the way he was gliding across the room. Good for that guy. It was pasta night and that meant pasta specials, so I figured this was one of those, "our best game" dishes and ordered the bolognese with rigatoni. I also ordered the Appalachian Salad, which was spinach, radicchio, blue cheese, pine nuts, 5 oz beef tenderloin tip, red wine vinaigrette. I asked for medium rare and got well done. But both were fantastic. I did not think the bolognese would satisfy my appetite, it was filling, but I did t want to be hungry an hour later and the steak with salad deliciously helped. My wife had the herb crusted salmon, chive-pepper-corn couscous ragout, fried basil. And there was a lot of couscous, probably a cup and a half if not two cups. This too was delicious. I was intrigued by one menu item we did not try for $25 as an appetizer, deep fried egg yolks with crème fraiche and caviar. I know to get that, the yolks must be frozen, then breaded and fried to be crisp on the outside but runny yolk inside. I couldn't interest my wife in this adventure, but someone else try them and let us know? Staff were all very hospitable. Free valet parking for a couple of hours, right at the entrance in fact. Value was reasonable and good quality, quantity and flavors were very good. It didn't blow us away, but we were not disappointed. The only crazy thing was $14 for a small pour on a glass of Chardonnay, but that's the way it goes for dining out nowadays. This was a decent choice for our dinner out while visiting Chattanooga. The soundtrack was also an unexpected mix of religious Christmas and opera music that overpowered the room. Much too loud. That said, the food itself delivered. Portions were generous, plating was thoughtful, and the mushroom gnocchi--subbed in for the ravioli that night--was flavorful, well executed, and satisfyingly hearty. The menu could use another substantial vegetarian dish with protein, but overall the meal was enjoyable and worthy of a return visit. The brunch food at White Bird is amazing and I'd highly recommend to anyone.. however I would caveat that it has consistently terrible service and you may leave aggravated. Long hostess lines (even when you have a reservation), non-attentive servers (takes a while to greet you, take the order and never check back with you), and the food often does not come out together for a table (after a long wait.) I boil much of this down to poor management and terrible processes. I've been 10 times and the themes are consistent, but this Mother's Day was the worst I've seen. My husband says he will never go back again, which is unfortunate as we love the food. read more

This place was picked for a group dinner and it was absolutely a great choice. Located onside a hotel, this restaurant has a bright decor when you walk in. We parked in the nearby parking spots which has free parking after 6pm. It is also across from the bridge so some nice views if you sit toward the back. Our server was great and promptly remembered our orders with modifications and didn't write a thing down. He presented suggestions and got refills on the table. First thing first - get the biscuits and put on the apple jelly. Crab dip was also top tier. Would stay away from the cornbread as it was very dry. You must order the pork chop. I have not had such a delicious pork chop from a restaurant in a while and I am almost wanting to drive back to get the pork chop again. It's that good. Nice place and great food. When I tell you, it was so amazing and so flavorful my husband had The Second in Walnut, we additionally had a couple of the shareables. They were all enough for us to both have plenty before our entree. I can't say enough about the customer service and the atmosphere. While sitting there I witnessed Mr. Ben polishing the glasses, do you know how much it means to go into a restaurant and not have someone else's lips or fingerprints on the glass? The food and ambiance here were both spectacular. Our family of four (two kids, ages 6 and 7) enjoyed our "fancy" valentines meal here and would return in a heartbeat. We happened to stop by on a take flight night which meant we got 2 wine flights (five 1 oz pours and one 5 oz glass of our favorite pour) and a cheeseboard/biscuit platter for $30. It was an amazing deal and the knowledge and attention of the bar and wait staff was above and beyond. All four meals were delicious, including the kids meals, and the value was shocking. Our last trip to Chattanooga found us spending our first night for dinner at the glorious Whitebird, located at the Edwin Hotel, which has a spectacular view of the Tennessee River. The view is quite grand to witness, especially during the golden hour. The food was equally as grand and tasty as where we enjoyed ourselves immensely. Our table was in the stylish main dining area -- white painted walls, with scores of clear bulbs hanging from the ceiling. The Whitebird statue was situated in the corner close to where we sat, creating an ambiance of spiritual and strength, strength and spiritual purity. Our cocktails were incredibly satisfying. The Passion on a Plane was a bourbon-based drink made with Italian liquors, passion fruit, lemon, and bitters that took me off on a journey from which I wasn't sure where I would land. The Barrel-Aged Old Fashioned was a winner, using Weller Special Reserve wheated bourbon as a base. The Three Violet Delights was my voyage into cocktails with tequila for the evening. It was fabulous, especially when combined with the mezcal, creme de Violette, lime, agave, and ginger beer. For a starter, we enjoyed the charred peach and crispy speck ham -- a gluten-free dish served with whipped goat cheese. The salty and savory of the goat cheese and crispy speck ham combined with the sweetness of the peach is fantastic. For an entree, I devoured the smoked short rib served with fingerling potatoes, carrot puree, fried carrots, and pickled onions (gluten-free). The Brussel sprouts we ordered were tasty with the bacon onion marmalade. Finishing the meal with the Orange Chocolate Panna Cotta made the experience perfect at Whitebird. We brought out of town friends for dinner after a day of sightseeing. We arrived about 30 minutes before our reservation, so went up to the rooftop for drinks! Our seating area was super comfy and the waitstaff was great! We asked if they could get our dinner reservation bumped back about 15 mins. And they did. We carried drinks down the elevator to dinner and were able to adjust seating to a spot that suited us perfectly! All the staff did a great job. The food was delicious. I tried to make a Reservation for brunch and the website said that no Reservations are required for breakfast or brunch. But when we arrived, the hostess asked us if we had Reservations. The service was great. The art in the building is interesting and fun... we were given a little background on some of the pieces from the staff which added to the experience. My wife and I visited for brunch and, while the food tasted great, it sort of felt like the portions were experiencing something like a recession. My daughter and I stopped by for brunch during the Head of the Hooch regatta. We started with the crab dip. It was huge and absolutely amazing. The accompanying baguette had the right amount of crisp to stand up to the dip. The dip itself had so much crab and a nice spice to cut the richness. We also split the chocolate and banana waffle. After the dip, it was like dessert! We especially liked the spicy chocolate sauce. The perfect amount of food for two. I get the sense that not every dish on the menu is as great as these were. For example, our friends at a nearby table were very disappointed with their brisket. So choose carefully? The service left much to be desired. My daughter's water glass was empty for nearly 15 minutes. It's not a huge restaurant and it wasn't full, so I'm not sure why this was. We also waited quite some time for the check. If you have time to be leisurely, order the crab dip, sit back and relax. It will be worth your while. read more

Because we had all kinds of plans, we did not experience this restaurant other than a brunch with our group of 10 on the Sunday morning before we all departed. The location is great. The restaurant is clean and spacious. My wife and I each had one of the breakfast Tartines. I had the Avocado, which features a sunny side egg, red onion, tomato, chilis, lemon herb cream cheese, crunchy grains, sourdough bread - it was excellent and a fair price. My wife had the heirloom tomatoes, which features garlic olive oil, whipped goat cheese, pesto, and 9 grain bread. Just really good and creative brunch food. For a group this large, everything was highly efficient. If you are one of those people who avoid hotel restaurants because you think they are generally not that good, rest assured that eating here is not a copout at all, it is good food. read more

We arrived early to enjoy a cocktail at the Whiskey Thief roof top bar and savor the sunset overlooking the TN river. The barista provided prompt and professional service and the gin recommendations for my Negroni were appreciated. The dinner experience was wonderful, again. Our server, Taylor S., was polite, menu literate, engaging and the right amount of humor. The steamed mussels with coconut curry was a spicy twist from typical which we recommend along with the tempura mushrooms. The stripped bass with romesco sauce, Mediterranean style was amazing. This is not an ideal situation due to the amount of drinks being served. He was very nice and the cocktails were good, but the service was very slow. As an appetizer, we choose the fried green tomatoes. They were just okay, not a lot of flavor. For dinner, I had salmon, which, in my opinion , was undercooked and flavorless. My husband had a filet. It was very tender, but needed seasonings. For dessert, I had the fruit tart and my husband had the warm blackberry peach crisp. Both desserts were really good. I wish I had a better review because I really wanted to like this restaurant, but it's doubtful we will visit again. If we do, it will be for dessert and coffee. read more

We tried Whitebird for brunch this morning, and, while it didn't knock my socks off, it was pretty good. We had a reservation for 10 am on a Sunday, but we didn't need it (they had plenty of tables available). We all started with coffees (decaf drip, cappuccino, and a flavored latte) - pretty good all around. My stepdad ordered a smoked salmon croquette "benedict," which they were able to make with egg whites per his request. He liked it. My mom special ordered a vegan dish, which came with sauteed mushrooms, a beet patty of some kind, some veggies, and some crostini - it was a bit random, but she said she enjoyed it. (I had picked Whitebird for brunch specifically because they had a dish that was labeled as vegan on the menu online the day I made the reservation. My mom is vegan, and I prefer to pick restaurants where she can select a dish without modifications or having to ask 100 questions. However, a few weeks later, and the vegan dish I had seen on the brunch menu was no longer on it. When we asked about it, our waitress had to ask the kitchen if they could make the dish as it was off-menu. They made it, but I wish they had kept a vegan dish on the menu to avoid the confusion.) My husband tried their breakfast burger (a burger on an English muffin with an over easy egg). He liked the dish (I only tried the meat, which I thought was perfectly cooked and seasoned), but the English muffin fell apart a bit under the weight of burger and the egg yolk. I got the chicken and waffles (chicken schnitzel and savory corn waffle with a jalapeno maple syrup). I didn't really taste any jalapeno, but I liked the dish overall - well cooked chicken, and the waffle was tasty. (It came with a Brussels sprouts slaw which I ate first, because I wasn't into the idea of mixing it with syrup.) The service was good, and the restaurant is beautiful. However, the menu wasn't the most exciting, the brunch offerings didn't seem Appalachian at all (and they bill themselves as an Appalachian restaurant), and the food was good, but nothing to write home about. (I took a look at their dinner menu, which looked more interesting/more Appalachian, and I'm definitely willing to consider trying it for dinner on a future visit to Chattanooga.) This is relatively minor, but for a restaurant that was only half full (maybe), the restaurant was very loud - definitely a restaurant I wouldn't take my 95-year-old grandfather to. The drinks were unique and so delicious. The food- where do I even start. The filet was delicious and perfectly cooked to my liking, not the cooks. And the accompaniments- garlic mashed, peppers, shrooms, sprouts and squash- my mouth is watering just thinking of it. My date quickly regretted his burger, however stated it was delicious!
