It's not quite a 3 star but didn't quite meet a 4 star either. Let's start with what's great here. A great oyster program with delicious oysters from a range of East Coast locations. Wonderful cocktail list with well balanced, well made cocktails. I loved my old fashioned and others enjoyed their drinks too. Very nice, attentive service from the servers although they brought out the oysters without telling us what was what and service was at times bumpy. The interior is nice, with it feeling casual but somewhere you could bring a date. And we enjoyed the lobster cakes which were well done, nice sauce, without overwhelming the sweetness of the lobster itself. So that was positive. Where it failed: the tuna bites on regular and not crispy rice was hard to eat. It was good but a little unruly. The halibut piccatta was VERY dry, almost bordering on inedible. Their special, which was a bento box was not great. The flavors didn't go together and their sushi eggroll had cream cheese which is very gross. Their steak frites was fine if not that memorable. All in all, I would come back for their drinks and their oysters but not sure I would come back for a full meal here. read more

STIR is a nice find in Chattanooga in the sense that it's got everything. For some reason, when my family is in this city, we don't crave anything heavy like BBQ or pizza, so STIR is perfect with the way they prepare fish and have oysters available. I can't remember all the varieties, but we usually get 2 of each kind of oyster they have available. It's a great way to start for the adults and the kids seem to go to town on the saltines. STIR has an extensive drink menu including various whiskeys and mocktails. We've generally ordered some kind of fish and a salad/poke bowl. The kitchen does a really great job of not overcooking the fish and there's the perfect amount of salt, fat and acid to flavor. The only thing that could be better is how they cook their white rice - it's not fluffy and has more of a gummy texture in both their poke bowl and their seasonal bento box. Ordinarily we wouldn't get desserts when Clumpies is a brief walk over, but this time we got their matcha cheesecake and layered chocolate cake. Both were delicious but between the two, I'd say the cheesecake was the best. Service is generally great here - they're attentive, friendly and give great recommendations. I also like how kid-friendly this restaurant is with a kids menu and crayons. While the ambiance doesn't feel kid-friendly, I like that this space allows parents to feel like they're having a night out while still able to have the kids in tow. This is a hugely popular and busy moderately upscale place. Most people dressed up nicely. Reservations a good idea! A lot of creative cocktails, and their famous ice cubes. Interesting building as well, ask your server about the history. I had the shrimp cocktail, which was absolutely delicious. Also went for a filet, which sadly was OK, but almost more like a NY Strip. Did not have that filet look or texture. It was decent, but no what I expected. My friend is a vegetarian and had the veggis burger which she sad was excellent. Servers all excellent and obviously well trained. I had my eye on one item and the server warned me off it! Said it was the one dish he get complaints about. Come for the food and the atmosphere. Very nice restaurant in CHattanooga. My main complaint, if any, is it is very open and loud. Service was great and server recommended the poke, which turned out to be a wonderful part of the meal. This restaurant is located in the Chatanooga Choo Choo train station building. The entrance is in the front, altough you might be able to enter from inside the station. I have been in the area numerous times and this is the first time I had dinner in this area. This was a late dinner, so we focused on sharing a few plates over a full meal. I did not write down the type of oysters on the menu that day, but got one of each of the rotating oysters. The poke was the star. Very nicely prepared with a wide variety of vegetables to complement the fish and rice. The kale was my least favorite, but the way they prepared it added to the poke. After trying different things individually, we mixed it into the biggest mess. She had the elderflower sour, which was a nice blend of sweet and sour, with cucumbers to offset some of the sweet. I usually get a old fashioned, but decided to get the Road Less Traveled, which was similar to my norm, but with a blackberry twist. I would definitely visit again, given the chance. Went during happy hour for some oysters and found that their deals weren't limited to happy hour! We loved the building and all of the natural light coming in from the super cool windows. The oysters were great. We sampled a few different ones, and then split a shrimp scampi dish. It was all delicious. Raw oysters, Rockefeller--so many oysters (heavy on the James River). Now, the Rockefeller oysters came topped with big shaved Parmesan that hadn't quite melted... which felt a little rogue, but hey--could've been how they were ordered. Oyster diplomacy prevailed. I ordered the seafood salad--loaded with lobster and shrimp. Fresh, citrusy, light, and absolutely fantastic. One of those dishes you keep going back to even when you're "full." We also tried the much-talked-about goat cheese ravioli. And... here's where things got a little dicey. The edges were undercooked. Sent it back. Round two... same situation. Filling? Delicious. Execution? Not quite there. To their credit, they took it off the bill without hesitation. Service-wise--bartenders were hustling hard, but clearly stretched thin for the crowd. Management might want to hop behind the bar and order a drink themselves... they'd feel it real quick. All in all: great energy, fun crowd, solid seafood, and a bar experience that makes the night. Part of a large group here (ages 22-80) for a family wedding welcome dinner in a private space. Buffet setup, which worked well for the crowd. They had a private patio attached to the dining room--a nice touch that opened things up and kept it from feeling like you're packed into a back room, which can happen with private dining. My wife has a gluten and dairy allergy, and I've got a tree nut allergy, Alpha-Gal, plus a diabetes kicker. Staff were attentive and helpful navigating the restrictions--appreciated that it wasn't a production. Food was very good across the board, which is no small thing when you're feeding a multigenerational group with varying tastes. Extensive bar offerings. Blown away by Stir. Atmosphere, food, service, they nailed it. Our waiter was kind and helpful, helped us pick out the most popular things on the menu. We ended up getting oysters, a garden chicken, and a chicken picotta as well as the crème brûlée all of it was drool-worthy. The atmosphere was cool, very industrial modern with unfinished accents. They had all kinds of seats like high tops, regular tables, booths, bar seats. We didn't have to wait more than 20 minutes for our table so not bad at all. Came in really late for us - 10pm after an exhausting day. Just wanted a bite and a nice glass of wine. Fortunately they are open late. Parking is a PIA, but beyond that it was great. The space is amazing in the old train terminal. They have an extensive menu with lots of choices for everyone. The wine list was a bit of a challenge as they were out of our first choice and they didn't have a sommelier on the floor. I ordered the Strawberry Moon Sangria. Certainly not a strong drink, but very tasty. Sweeter and less of a punch than a typical sangria. We also shared a Chef's board. The pepper jelly had great flavor, not too sweet. The board was well-appointed with a decent variety of charcuterie. For dinner, I had the Steak Frites. The steak's seasoning was well balanced, not too salty. It was tender and thick, with obvious quality of cut. The steak fries (as labeled in the menu) weren't what I would consider typical of either steak fries or frites, but they were good and freshly cut, albeit a little brown and soft for my taste. The house made steak sauce base was very good. A great blend of spice, savory, and sweet with hints of sriracha. My husband enjoyed his mahi bowl. The mahi was fried and crisp with a heat from the pineapple sauce that was a slow burn, building as he enjoyed his meal. A great night! I spent $30 on their Lobster crab cake breakfast since I could substitute the eggs for another side. The 2 lobster crab cakes were very very small and tasted gross. Top it off with a frothy espresso martini and call it the perfect night out. I wasn't a HUGE fan of the seared scallops being on top of a bed of roasted vegetables, they seemed a bit basic. But the scallops were still cooked perfectly. Service was a little slow while we were seated on the nearly empty patio. We had little to no service, like we were an afterthought. For appetizer we split a wedge salad, which had good flavors. However the main entree which the waitress told us was a popular dish did not do well. The building was attractive. We had 8:00 reservations but there were only a handful of tables occupied and no one was at the bar. The food was subpar and the service was questionable at best. We ordered oysters as an appetizer and they arrived about a minute before our entrees. Halfway through our meal, with 7 oysters left on the platter, Kyla asked if we wanted to "scoop them out" so she could take the plate. The lobster Mac n cheese was large but the lobster was overcooked. Seared tuna was overcooked (on one side), the fried mahi bowl and tuna poke bowl were large and prepared the best of the 4 entrees. We asked about dessert choices and were told "chocolate cake, cheese cake, and creme brûlée" She then said "Oh, we have an eggnog creme brûlée". I asked if the cheese cake was plain she reluctantly said "It's matcha, but I don't tell people that because you can't taste it". I explained that those details would be important to me. I was going to ask for details on the other options but I gave up. Not trusting the generic descriptions at that point we said thank you and we would pass on dessert tonight. At that point we really just wanted the check to leave. Upon receiving the check we asked about validating parking since it was on the website. There's an entire section on parking on the website. They obviously need to provide a map of parking since it's a very specific gravel lot. She said she hasn't looked at the site, but the only lot they valid is "2 blocks behind the restaurant in front of the flats apartments and I'm sure it's not the one you parked in". She then walked over to the corner near the raw seafood and proceeded to cough into her hand then deliver food to a table. Entrees all below $31 unless "market price". read more

Had a very nice meal at STIR. The food was tasty and the portions were generous. We especially enjoyed the chicken bites. The deviled eggs were solid. The Mahi bites were outstanding. The rice that came with the meal was not as flavorful as I would have liked. However the fish bites more than made up for the rice. The filet mignon was extremely tender and flavorful. We were looking for a place to eat before an evening kayak trip and STIR came up as one of the favorite places in Chattanooga. We asked if we would be ok to come in in our kayaking gear and they said it was fine and made a reservation for us. When I tell you this was the best meal of our trip. We didn't get to sample any of the cocktails (because we were heading out for a two hour paddle), but my steak salad was one of the best things I ever put in my mouth.
