My wife and i were so excited to try The Upper Bank, we decided to make a day of traveling to the area, checking out the beautiful scenery and dine - just the two of us. We arrived a bit before the restaurant open, just relaxing on the back deck. The back deck was rustic and seemed aged, with virtually no view of the river - which we found interesting given the location. While there was no recognition by any staff of our presence, we enjoyed the peaceful setting until we came to the reception station. Found the menu to be limited but OK for the occasion. There were only two tables outside occupied, in the dining room where we sat there was at max over our 75 minutes present, only two other tables on a late afternoon Friday occupied. The meals were fine - I had a shrimp dish that was passable, my wife loves fried catfish, which were decent sized filets - tasty and not oily. My wife had a rum specialty drink which was fine and decent size, There was an additional tax on the drink, which I found interesting but annoying. Table serve was fine but not special. We were greeted and sat outside per our request. It wasn't too busy at the time and were able to pick our table. It quickly filled up so I recommend reservations. My husband and I just wanted a drink and appetizer. The strawberry coconut margarita was such a hit, I had three. We also had THE BEST charcuterie in all of Chattanooga. I am a snob when it comes to charcuterie and this one takes the cake. Visited The Upper Bank a few times and the food is always wonderful! Had the grilled shrimp, wedge salad, Caesar salad, rib eye and hush puppies. Great selection of drinks as well. Sat outside - 7:00pm- and at first it was so nice but as the sun fell the bugs came out so be conscientious of that fact. We were able to move inside so that was nice. We were looking for a brunch location while camping nearby and this was great. Walked right in on a Sunday late morning. My Greek omelet was delicious and my husband had the fried catfish, equally delish! Staff was attentive and pleasant. The only thing I found slightly odd.... I had to ask for salt and pepper and they brought out a small dish with salt in it that I had to use my fingers (and hopefully only my fingers) and then the large pepper mill that the server had to use to provide pepper. Pretty bad for the price point. Nice white tablecloth place, but first thing you notice is the staticky loud music. No ambiance at all. Ordered drinks, martini for me with the Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin, my favorite new gin for a straight up martini. For $14, I expect it to still sparkle, but this was less than an ounce and completely watered down. No ice floating on top. Husband's "Mr Banks" old fashioned was served in a dirty glass, smelling of fish. Gross. His clever wife poured out a glass of water and replaced his stinky glass. Didn't see our waiter for a long time until he delivered our entrees and said, "Your salads are right behind me." Now, we are super nice people and always understand when a waiter is in the weeds. Mike used to be a server in college. But by now I was pissed because of the $17 fish drinks and the 30 minute wait for a salad. It's not the waiter's fault, but WTF DUDE? I made him smell the fish glass and take the drink and salads off. He agreed, but he should have asked a manager to come out. He did not, unfortunately. Now we just won't be back and we'll write reviews. The food was a mixed bag. Great char on the salmon and green beans, but the dill sauce was so greasy and salty, I washed it off with my lemon juice. Mike had Wagyu baseball and baked potato. The fact that baked potato is not a regular side should have been a warning. The sous chef is not familiar with potatoes. Or temperature? It was cold. The butter and cheese wouldn't melt. When I was finished, I placed my fork and knife crossed on the plate, international sign for "take my plate away." My daughter and I tried this place after having discovered it through a work party for the holidays. We were happy to get there from Chattanooga in under an hour on a busy Friday night. We were sat right away with a lovely view of the river. We ordered drinks and the cauliflower appetizer. It was fabulous. Our server kelsee was quick to refill our waters and so attentive. We each ordered different things. She had the Ribeye steak over garlic mash potatoes and i had the pasta. The portions are HUGE and you will not leave hungry. The desserts are also huge so you might want to split it. The prices are comparable to the quality. Much better than Ruth Chris or J Alexander. And while the drive should only take 20 minutes plan for some traffic and remember the restaurant is on Central Time. The Chef Lee is great and personally makes sure the meal is to your liking. I have allergies and he was very respectful about it. The linen table cloth and white glove service is so top notch I find myself running out of words. I can say I will be back. Thank you for a wonderful dinner with my family. We had an early dinner reservation for our party of 6 so we could enjoy the view. We started with holiday drinks, highly recommend the spiced egg nog. We had the cheese platter which was delicious and very reasonably priced. Most in our group had the salmon which they all loved, I had the chicken piccata and I would order it again. The chicken was delicious, the sauce and the mashed potatoes. We had all three desserts and everyone had their favorite. I'm writing this review after our third visit in as many weeks, and I'm confident in recommending The Upper Bank as a must-visit restaurant. Great restaurants start with great people. Chef Lee and his wife, Ronna, have staffed The Upper Bank with talented wait staff who are well-versed in the menu details. We just love Camille; her energy and attention to detail are all on point. As a starter, we've had the Hushpuppies. Chef Lee's spin makes them unique to The Upper Bank--full of flavor with a dipping sauce that's just tangy enough to delight you. You will want to eat more, but hold off as the main courses are fantastic. We've had the salmon twice, each time cooked perfectly to our order. The accompanying rice pilaf can be swapped out for the homemade, skin-in, flavored mashed potatoes. With either choice, you have a delicious meal. The chicken piccata was well seasoned, cooked perfectly, creamy sauce with mashed potatoes as a nice side. The pork tenderloin, feels like a Chef's favorite, as it's prepared without drying out the tenderloin, seasoned masterfully, a real delight. Our friend had the Chicken Livers, a challenging item to make that is often prepared dry elsewhere. Not here--they were tender and very well seasoned. Another friend had the ribeye steak, which was prepared to their specifications and was mouth-wateringly good. Tonight, I had the special: scallops prepared with a hickory-smoked infusion, juicy and soaked in butter over mashed potatoes. I've had many scallops in my lifetime, and honestly, these stand out for their incredibly skilled preparation and flavor. We've also had the amaretto pie, which is homemade and loaded with flavor. Our party of 5 had the best of hopes for this restaurant. Firstly upon walking in and being seated.. it was hot and in the dining room the tables were far too close together. It was obvious that there concern was not for their customers but rather how many people they can crowd in $$ We ordered app's , salads & entrées. (Very pricey for a rural roadside experience.) when ordering an entree that comes with mashed potatoes you are charged to change to another side although on the menu they cost the same amount.. When it was entree time.. One gentleman in our party was served after all of us... and when he was finally served he was only given French fries.. and was told the rest of his order is coming... seriously over 5 minutes later his okra came and again was told the same thing.. finally about 7 minutes after that he served his frog legs (long after the others at the table were finished with the entrees) The waitress was clueless... never volunteered to even bring hot fries to go with his entree... she truly had no clue as to how to serve customers in this "Self Proclaimed Fine Dining Restaurant"... (manager never came around to apologize) Overall, the noise level was horrible we had to shout to each other to have a conversation. The seating was much too tight. The food once we were served was just average the best thing was the salad. And as far as the Up Class image that Upper Bank desires to show ...They are no where near a fine dining experience... Expect it to be just another "want to be" restaurant that you will visit "once". Oh and if you ask for salt and pepper.. you'll get a small bowl of salt that everyone at the table are expected to use their fingers in. ... and the size of the pepper mill that was placed on our table says it all... almost 2 feet tall with no offer of service or help with this enormous obnoxious item. Upper Bank expects dinners to pay for a fine dining experience. They are striving to be something they are not. Our $250+ evening out with friends was not enjoyable at all... we could not hear, the food was average and the food serve frustrating. Beware! read more
