Had an incredible steak! The caesar was great, so were the shrimp! Definitely worth the price!

Had been long looking forward to a return to Sewanee, particularly to have the opportunity to check out Judith Tavern. Unfortunately, left pretty disappointed. The space is attractive, though it's far from being any sort of "tavern". It's rather loud, industrial. The worst aspect of the space are the tables for 2, which are small cocktail tables, really sized to hold a couple drinks, not dinner for 2. One is left with the impression that they're more interested in fitting as many diners as possible into the space rather than providing a fine dining experience. So much so that the wait staff apologized for the table size several times. Menu varies with the season, though we found most items on the online "sample" menu were on the dinner menu that night as well. Roasted oysters were plated very attractively, the oysters were plump, and the topping tasty, though several of mine were refrigerator cold - clearly made in advance and not properly heated for serving. Starter of sourdough bread with chili oil. The bread was wonderfully rustic, the chili oil was actually garlic oil. For my main, I had the "signature" trout. Pleasant enough, a nicely cooked filet swimming in a brothy sauce. Accompanied by a few small rounds of potato, what amounted to a single thinly sliced fingerling, I left hungry and considered stopping for a burger on the way home. The wife was underwhelmed with the duck. Kudos for providing an upscale dinner destination in Sewanee. Though not an option that we'd consider revisiting. read more

I booked the Easter brunch here for 2025. Our time was for 11am, right when. They opened so we could beat the rush of people. This place seems to be brand new. Beautiful inside. We were promptly seated. The tables for 2 are a little smaller than they should be. I was worried I was going to knock over a drink. The Easter brunch menu was a pre fixed tasting menu that was prepaid through open table. It was absolutely outstanding! It started with deviled eggs and rolls with ground mustard and prosciutto. Delicious! Then out came a salad with beautiful butter lettuce and these fresh roasted carrots. Both were fantastic. Third course was these huge slices of lamb, potato's au gratin and gnocchi. Everything was made with the freshest ingredients. They did not miss a beat. Dessert was a citrus cake with the perfect butter cream frosting. I left there stuffed! I also enjoyed their Bloody Mary. It was spiced perfectly. I would definitely go back and would love ton try their dinner menu. This place is really a hidden gem tucked away on the mountain in Sewanee. We drove over an hour to come here and it was well worth it. read more

We will not return. One time was enough! The food was lukewarm and the steak was supposed to be medium rare...it was not. We were there for 3 hours and 27 minutes total. Just excuses that the kitchen was backed up. The noise was bad making it hard to have a conversation with our friends! The cocktails were fine, however, the wine list was ridiculously pricey. We saw two wines we often purchase, one from Spain, and the other from Austria. They were priced over $120 for which we purchase at a wine shop for around $17. The potential is there but Judith is chasing away this customer. read more

It's a hidden gem on Monteagle Mountain. Being a local, we usually have to drive to Nashville for culinary experiences like this. I cannot wait to go back and try more of the dishes there. The half chicken entree was delish...it was big enough for 2-3 meals! read more

Environment is cozy, well decorated, and feels high end. The service was attentive and friendly. The bar menu is expertly arranged. I ordered a medium tavern steak and it was perfectly cooked. The restaurant and service were amazing. The waitresses were all helpful and nice. The muted upscale, natural minimalistic vibes were perfect for Sewanee. The food was amazing but somewhat small portions on the steak and pork. Every dish we had was great with unique flavors, so definitely a place for those willing to try new things. The noodles tasted homemade and paired nicely with the mushrooms and sauce, but we wish there was an option to add meat on the taggaliatelle. The steak was delicious but a little more potatoes or something would've been nice. The chicken dish was the largest portion and very good, not as unique in the flavors so if you want to play it safe, the chicken would be a good go to. The pork was packed with flavor and good but again could use a side or slightly larger portion. We also had two appetizers for our party of four, so we were fine but without apps we would've still been hungry we decided. A beautiful restaurant and amazing service. We tried this place finally just to be underwhelmed. 1 salad, room temperature water and 2 entrees was $100. The leafy greens salad with buttermilk dressing is very bitter lacking the unctuousness of fat from cheese or milk. It it is bib lettuce, raddish, parsnip, cucumber cilantro, dill and a dressing that is lemon juice with the tiniest bit of yogurt. Sadly missing salt and fat to only be bitter. it is large but $18 it a lot for this salad. Bread is an extra charge so there is none of that and no crouton. Tea is not availabe nor is ice that I saw, coke and sprite are the only soda choice and are $5. The menu is very limited and although their website says "sample menu" it is the menu available. We thought it might be a fluid or changing menu since this place has a chef. We had the steak as one entree and the pasta as the other. Portions are not oversized but run in the $35-40 range. The mushroom pasta was good, however it was small with mushrooms and cheese only and no meat for $32. The steak was cooked well and tasted good except for the very sour salsa verde they put on top. This combined with the bitter salad made for an overall astringent experience. The stewed potatoes with the steak were overdone and lacked flavor and substance. Our server was good, the atmosphere was nice (tables are tiny) but it did not meet our expectations overall. read more

After much anticipation, dined here last night. A vacation week in Sewanee promoted the idea into becoming reality. In short, it will be awhile before I return, mainly b/c I do not live close by. Also b/c I was not as wow'd as I had hoped to be, especially after reading & hearing raves. Two glasses of wine & two dishes were mid-$80's for me, before taxes then $95 afterward. Not unusual for a finer dining experience. I overtipped in cash as I & my dinner companions kept our server hopping: multiple questions & order changes; I embarrassingly admit to my part! He was (is) young & new & polite & did his best to keep up with us. I thanked him with a handshake before departing. My appy was the raved about 1/2 dozen fresh oysters, tiny & tasty w/a very vinegary cucumber mignonette, too vinegary to enjoy. I cancelled my order of the greens salad w/buttermilk dressing once I saw how large it was (as presented at other tables), clearly enough for several diners to share. (A hint which could be mentioned in the menu notes or by the server.) I ended up ordering the Skirt Steak (by another menu name) w/escarole & a scant few mini golden potatoes, hiding underneath the well-cooked beef. The dish wasn't "pretty": it was bathed in way too much butter & "oil" (I learned later), seasoned w/s & p & Thyme. Even with that info., I couldn't pinpoint why it had a sharp, almost biting taste. In short it was just too greasy & the meat wasn't sizzling hot b/c of the oily bath. The escarole & potatoes were hiding underneath. I ate it all, I was hungry & kept hoping it would taste "better". One of my dinner companions asked for bread or toast to accompany his trout w/beurre blanc (which was a soupy presentation needing such, as did my dish). He shared a toast piece w/me which helped me sop up the balance of my dish. Surprising that none "came with" either dish. The table placement was just right, away from too busy an area, the vibe seemed relaxed, the age range of the diners was varied, all the servers were pleasant & helpful. There is not much to cushion the sound in the contemporary setting so I imagine that, when Judith is full of merry & chatty diners, it'd be hard to hear one another. The wine list, was interesting, & brief. It was varied in the "by the glass" options yet those were still slim. The spirits side of the alcohol list was far more diverse & plenteous. Both lists were hard to read in the ink choice in print & w/the dimmer lighting. (Non-alcohol cocktails were offered, too, on the drinks menu, a smart move. Also, fair to mention, our server told us they have a full bar.) Dessert was two items, only: a rich & decadent meringue-topped chocolate pie slice or a soft-serve ice cream. The Sewanee Community will continue to embrace this welcome dining offering. I feel certain Judith will diversify its menu options as the seasons change (as they are using multiple local food purveyors). I had hoped to leave feeling like "I cannot wait to go back", but didn't, and that's okay! Bon appetit all! read more

What a jewel!!! We dropped by without reservations to have a cocktail & inquire about potential ability to meet dietary restrictions for a future visit. The atmosphere is lively and congenial. Cocktails are well crafted & presented, both restaurant originals and classics. We had cocktails & appetizers at the bar. The staff were happy to offer suggestions for menu items that could best meet or be adapted for my needs. The chicken liver mousse was absolutely divine & my spouse loved the oysters. Delightful to watch all these gorgeously plated dishes passing by-will definitely be back to experience more. read more

Friends introduced us to this popular spot! It's inventive and well worth the visit. My tasty starter salad (the buttermilk) was generous enough to feed a family of six rabbits or people. For an entree I enjoyed the delicious papardelle that I would RECOMMEND! It was as if we were back in Italy! The acoustics in the former laundry are challenging so I recommend a late reservation. read more
