I found this place with my daughter as we wanted to experience every place along Smith street. Arepas? Yes....I love them...had them at street fairs plenty of times, but this...this was not the same. It dawned on me that the food I had previously been eating was not the "real deal" so I was thrown a bit from what I was expecting to what I was actually eating. I got the Parrilla, which is steak, grilled tomato, cheese, and avocado. It was delicious and the steak was perfectly medium rare and tender. Also had the Catira, which is a cold chicken salad and Gouda cheese. I liked the flavors of the chicken salad mixed with avocado, but the chicken was too dry for my taste. I also got a cane sugar lemonade and it was just okay to me. Had a weird aftertaste. The sauces they serve are pretty delicious too. Watch out for the red spicy one, it has an intense kick. The green avocado sauce is just plain addicting. Definitely would go back and try other ones. The arepas themselves are pretty big, so I probably would only order one next time. read more

This place is great! The guy running the counter, who I assume is the owner, is super friendly and helpful. While I'm not an expert arepa eater, every variety I've tried had has been pretty tasty. The ingredients are seemingly high quality and fresh. Each one I've tried has been filling, in spite of how small they may appear initially. Also, the prices are quite reasonable if you don't need to eat 3 (which you don't unless you really want to). One criticism is that they could use a bit more spice, I'm suspecting they're toned down for the gentrified neighborhood children who can't eat raw jalapeno's and chicken vindaloo like myself, but I guess everybody has different spice expectations. Hopefully there are some spice level options added to the menu eventually, as I will definitely continue coming back for these delicious arepas - and also empanadas, which are small but tasty as well. I ordered one item (a $5 sticky bun). 15 minutes later no sign of it, so I asked to change it to a to-go order and explaining I had to leave in 2 minutes, person at front said they'd check. few minutes later, I went back up to wait at front desk saying I have to go, someone went down and came back up (now 20 minutes after ordering) saying it would be another 3 minutes. I had to go / late for an appointment, she looked at me and offered nothing to make it right - a few dollars but more importantly 20 minutes of rising disappointment and frustration later. The problem here was noone set expecations of more than 20 minutes when ordering an item. It is great to have slow food made to order, just can't have expectations of a casual, quick-ish dining experience. Sheesh read more

I've been hesitant about walking in to White Maize, because it didn't quite fit my sugar, shopping and caffeine addiction, but I thought I'd finally give it a try. Since I moderate my meat intake, I decided to give their 'quinoa arepa' a try: I added avocado and black beans to complete my meal. I also threw in an order of their tostones, to try more items from their menu. I loved the ambiance: They had lively Latin music playing and communal style wooden tables. The man who assisted me with my order was kind, and patient. I felt that there was something special about this place: Nothing dissociative about the personalities here, as there are in most of the hipster-looking-spots( whatever that means anymore) in the neighborhood. The vibe was genuine. I sat down, and the same man who took my order, brought my meal to me with a few of their sauces. One was creamy and one was hot: Both different, but delicious. I noticed the textures in my meal: The arepa was nice and crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside ( basically how I like my men). I knew this was going to be a good time. I bit into the arepa, and my eyes rolled back. Every bite was delightful and emitted more salivation in my tastebuds. The ingredients in my arepa were proportioned. My nourishment was taken care of. The tostones were also very good. Especially, the cabbage salad nicely laid out on top of each tostone. They were cooked right: Not too dry.... not too soft. The flavors complimented each other. I don't know if this is a consistent turnout for most of their items, but I was happy to have given their establishment a chance. I'll be coming here more often.
