It's places like this that make me actually want to visit Brooklyn. Y'all should open a location in Astoria! I had a grilled steak bowl and it was perfect. They're not huge but also not small - really a great portion for a bowl. I finished the whole thing and felt satisfied which is nice with this sort of thing. The only reason I didn't get an Arepa is because I was basically starving and didn't want to wait, ha! But I would love to try one another time when I am not in such a rush to eat. This place is consistently truly great. Every time I've eaten here, the food has been really delicious. My favorite was the bowl with salmon, which is a special, so it's not always on the menu. I've had a few of there arepas, which were all fantastic. Their green sauce that they include on the side is so flavorful. If you're in the neighborhood, don't sleep on this place! I spent ten minutes with my partner looking for a casual dine in place with vegetarian options in the area, from yelp to google to - yep, you guessed it, actually walking around from place to place and reading the menus posted up outside their establishments and looking at peoples plates. We passed restaurants with 24 dollar burritos. Ones with good reviews that when we saw the customers outdoor seating area drew us in, but upon seeing their frozen french fries on their plate that did not look appealing at all, clicked our heels and left. Finally we stumble upon White Maize with its unpretentious decor and good looking and well priced menu. We had a coupon for a free drink from yelp and the hostess was kind enough to give us two. She answered the phone for ordering to go, while we were deciding on the menu, and the other employee working there shifted what he was doing to take care of us while she was on the phone. Great service and thank you for that. Finally, we pick the Pabellon number one with meat and number two vegetarian. Served with different sauces and our drinks, we had a great experience with the complex flavors of platanos and avocado, beans and spice and herbs all while enjoying the nice big windows and sweet sweet lemon drinks. Still new to NYC so I'm getting acquainted to all sorts of arepa preparations. Personally, I like them on the dryer/crispy side with minimal oil and most of the fat coming from the ingredients. White Maize does that. Their meat is lightly seasoned so that might be a miss for some (like their plainer pollo). Contrast this with the Reina, which is a good combo of black beans, plantains, avocado, and cheese. The avocado salad chicken isn't bad either but you may have to add some salt or Tajin. I mostly order delivery so I won't complain about the utterly satanic price gouging that is Postmates. I'd say WM is medium price range considering the size of their arepas, but the cornmeal in them is quite filling. read more

So good!! I stumbled upon this place walking on Smith Street. These Arepas are really good and they give the Arepa Lady a run for her money! The Vuelve a la Vida arepa I had was so good, that I went back to get another to Yelp about. The arepas are made to order to allot time for that. Food looked beautiful. Flavor was very mild not what I expected in comparison to other Venezuelan restaurants I've eaten in. I ordered in person and waited for the order which included two empanadas. They packed the wrong empanadas. The steak bowl was not very good. The steak had a lot of grizzle and at least half of the portion was hardly edible. We ate the rest of the bowl, which was very large but a lot of lettuce. The grilled shrimp bowl was much better. Not sure we will bother going back. read more

I was hungry when I came in- it really hit the spot. It's a cool location with a very diverse menu filled with different arepas, bowls, burritos, empanadas, and other specialty foods. The black beans here are amazing by the way, they are so different compared to any I've ever had as they are sweet. My boyfriend got the garlic shrimp burrito and it was really small (don't get this if you're really hungry and expecting a monster burrito). The portions here aren't huge but the quality is amazing! I am going to echo the sentiment of anther reviewer and say that some sort of combo would be great... especially since there's a counter and it's open at lunch. Two arepas is too much food, and all the apps/sides are pretty large... Do yourself a favor and throw in three of those cheese stick things and maybe a Boyland's for a few bucks extra. read more

Being from Venezuela myself and having high expectations for arepas, I have to say this place mades them very original. There are many vzlan places where arepas and venezuelan dishes have been americanizes to fit the culture. I'm happy to find a place where the flavors and authenticy of the culture is kept in the food. We had the pabellon and the reina. They were both full with fillings. You can tell the dough has been done right. There are some secret to make the perfect arepa and these people seem yo know them. We also had tequeños, which are like mozzarella sticks cover with flour dough. They weren't bad but I can't say i like them. There were very small and tasted a bit frozen. Prices are on the high end for arepas but good compare to other places and their quality. I may want to come back and try other topings. You get 10% off your total when you check in on yelp and they take Samsung/Apple pay. read more

Really exceeded my expectations. Despite the great reviews I thought $10 was kind of pricey for an arepa. However, while it might be a dollar or two high, the quality is great and I have no problem paying a little more for quality food. Good size for lunch. Large communal table at the front of the restaurant. I ordered the pabellon arepa ($9.5 with tax). Arepa itself was hot, crispy, and fresh. It came with 2 sauces - a light jalapeño and another green sauce. Everything was beautifully flavorful and perfectly seasoned. Amazing!! This is the place if you want fresh, quick arepas. Prices are affordable. I had the steak bowl and the chorizo arepa to split. The bowls are unlimited toppings!! From rice, lettuce, avocado (yes no extra for avocado!!) tomatoes, cheese, black beans, and feta. Ingredients are super fresh! The steak was cooked to the perfect temperature. Was not chewy. I usually don't really like chorizo, but the arepa was super delicious!! The bread is super crispy. The chorizo had a lot of flavor with tons of the smoky goodness. This place is incredible. We have been a few times and I don't know why it took us so long to go back. Everything was amazing! We forgot to take pictures because it was so good and we ate it so fast! Pick up was great - 15-20 minutes- and the staff was incredibly nice. But omg the food! We got empanadas, which were amazing - the best we have ever had (and we've had a lot).
