I fell upon this place on a whim. I was strolling Bushwick and was enticed by the photos of their arepas. I can confirm that they look the way they are advertised! And they taste delicious. I felt like the servings were huge!!! Immediately walking in, I was greeted and sat down. My order was taken quickly too. It was a busy day but my food still came out within 10 minutes. And good thing too because I was starving. I got the pollo arepa and pollo empanada. Looovveee how soft the pollo empanada is... it's so dang fluffy. That was my first time having an empanada with that kind of dough. I have to say that I prefer it. Wish Filipinos used that dough when we make our empanadas. lol. The pollo arepa was everything!!! I had never had an arepa until the day I had one here. The meat was seasoned so nicely in their tomato based sauce. And the actual arepa... soft yet had a bit of a crunch. It was the perfect textures for me. I also enjoyed their soursop juice. It paired perfectly with my meal. My friend got the pernil arepa and was impressed by the taste and the green sauce. I didn't get much information out of him other than it was hitting the spot lol. Definitely a solid place to go in the area. It's kind of medium sized in there but there is plenty of seating if you're with a party no bigger than 3 or 4 people. I think most people come in here for a grab and go situation. This place was awesome. Quiet, not too packed, very simple décor but pleasant vibe. We were blown away by the arepas, I got the chicken and my friend got the vegetarian. Both were so flavorful, especially the chicken, and the plantains and cheese on the veg were the perfect combo. The empanadas were so fluffy and the cazón I got worked really well inside, the spices they added to the fish married it well with the dough. And the sauces!! Total must, particularly the creamy green sauce, but also the others ruled. And the prices were reasonable, I was very full after a $6 empanada and $13.50 arepa, for a lighter meal could probably just have the latter. Awesome spot in Bushwick for sit-down arepas. read more

I was out and about in Bushwick and needed a quick bite for lunch. Yelp led me to Arepera and I'm so glad it did! The food here is phenomenal and the prices are really fair. The inside is clean and airy with plenty of seating. I initially thought this place would be more of a order at the counter kinda spot but they actually offer full table service. They even have cocktails! We opted for the rice and beans, the pernil arepa, and the carne mechada empanada. The rice and beans were surprisingly delicious - super simple but full of flavor. The pernil arepa was incredible! Stuffed with cheddar cheese and juicy shredded pork that tasted like it had been marinated for hours upon hours. Maybe one of my fave arepas I've ever had. My sister enjoyed her beef empanada and I liked the little bit of beef filling I tried. The serving sizes here are really generous for the price. Our bill ended up being only $30ish. I would totally recommend this spot for a quick bite. I would've tried more of the menu had I been more hungry and, if I lived in the area, this would be a regular spot for me for sure. read more

Visited for an early dinner, have not been by in quite a while. Was excited to get a hot and cheesy arepa, but was let down a bit. Place a bit messy, and no soap in bathroom. Started with sweet plantains and cheese along with some rice and black beans, that was delicious. Sauces on the table were really good too (just crusty bottles). Our server was fairly nice. The arepas were the miss. The cheese was really cold, and not melted at all. Not sure if that's the way it's intended to be served. Also ordered a chicken and avocado one, which was a really cold chicken salad - I was expecting warm chicken so that was pretty interesting. I love Venezuelan food now because of this restaurant. Earlier this year, I had Venezuelan students who recommended me some dishes to try and now I finally could. I had difficulty choosing what to eat, but you got to get what is the national dish of a country and you got to get what is in the name of the restaurant. When the place is an arepera, you need to get arepa. The food was delicious, and I enjoyed my friend's rum drink (nice and sweet). I was pretty full after eating the food, so I take that as a sign of high integrity for a restaurant. The server was helpful and friendly. This was a casual neighborhood eatery. My dinner plans went awry but cool Venezuelan restaurant Arepera Guacuco warmly welcomed me and made sure I didn't go back outside hungry! It's a popular and hip spot but definitely not annoyingly so. I had the worst time trying to decide what to eat since there were loads of options, with the bulk of the menu consisting of arepas. Finally, I ordered and the pabellón arepa ($14.50), which contained shredded beef, black beans, sweet plantains, and white cheese, was quite yummy.  I was on the cusp of satiety post-arepa so I ordered an empanada. The empanada ended up being more massive than I expected. I'd picked the vegetariana one ($6.50) which offered an intriguing combo of components: sweet plantains, black beans, cheese, jalapeños, and coconut. Doing a little digging online now, I learned that Venezuelan empanadas use corn meal instead of flour, resulting in a bread-like texture instead of a more pie crust-like one. Anyway, the empanada was piping hot and just what I needed! read more

If you don't like Arepera Caucuco you must be kinda loco. I stopped in solo last Friday to grab some quick grub and oh boy did it hit the spot. I ordered the Pabellon Criollo, which for $19 comes with shredded beef, white rice, black beans, an arepa and fried sweet plantains topped with salty cheese. I haven't been here in years but it all tasted just as delicious as I remember.. talk about consistency! While the service isn't the most interactive, the servers are efficient and leave you with a nice sized pitcher of water for your meal. I don't drink anymore but I could so see this being the perfect place to grab a hardy meal before a night on the town. read more

Great little Venezuelan spot in Bushwick, specializing in arepas and empanadas. It can be tough to find yummy vegetarian and vegan options at South American restaurants but Guacuco knocks it out of the park with their vegetarian empanada! Hands down the best empanada I've ever had, and that includes a month in Argentina subsisting almost entirely on empanadas. The vegan arepa was a bit odd - mostly stewed peppers - and messy to eat but yummy nonetheless. Don't sleep on the juices! Cocktails looked good too, though we didn't try any. The portions are pretty big here! I only had one arepa, one empanada and a milkshake (after dance class) and I was stuffed. I like the pork arepa and vegetarian empanada. I had a vegetarian arepa with smashed plantain, tomato, avocado, and cheese. Tomato and cheese were thickly cut creating a blocky texture and appearance to the sandwich. I liked the grainy texture of the arepa. I liked the crispness of it too. It held together well. The star of the meal are the sauces. There are three sauces on each table: a creamy green sauce, a creamy red sauce, and a mildly spice green vinegar based sauce. They were phenomenal. All were super flavorful with my favorite being the spicer green one as it had more tanginess and acidity to it. The arepa was pricey at $14. It came out to over $18 after tax and tip. The food seems very authentic, I really liked the crispy exterior of the vegetarian empanada and there was plenty of filling inside. The pork filling in the sandwich was slightly dry though. If you're looking for an appetizer, the fried plantains are great. Service is friendly and attentive overall. Came here to grab food with some friends before a show nearby. The venue is medium sized with a few large tables available. I walked in on a rainy day at 6pm on a Wed and it wasn't too busy. I ordered the #2 arepa that was a deconstructed into the arepa and a plate of seafood in tomato sauce. The seafood was fresh and came out. I wished it had mussels in it as I only had 1 that wasn't opened. It was a bit messy to eat but delicious. It was a bit salty by itself but works well with the arepa. I ordered to go after having a few drinks else where. The music was much better although it had the speaker quality/volume of a restaurant I was feeling it much more (mainly because it was music I liked:) When I got home (about a 13 minute car ride) the food was warm (nothing a pop in the oven/air fryer couldn't help) and my nonalcoholic beverage made it intact to get spiked. I love love loved the empanadas. They were by far the most interesting and delicious masa I've had. Definitely not masa I'm use to, it had a bao bun texture. Was in Bushwick for a show with my boyfriend. We needed something quick and close to the venue. Ended up coming across Gua-cu-co and we were glad we did. The place is small with the bar overlooking the kitchen. They had some holiday specials so we decided to try a few. We ordered two empanadas to start. A cheese one and the other had practically a whole dinner stuffed into its corn flour shell. It had beans, sweet plantains, meat and a whole lot of love. Then we opted for two of the holiday dishes to share, an Arepa stuff with pork, lettuce, rice and beans and drizzled in sour cream. The other was the Hallaca which I wasn't sure what it was based on the description until it came out and it looked exactly like what I consider to be Tamales. A definite recent favorite of mine. Also not the biggest dessert fan but try the flan it's pretty amazing. read more

So disappointing that the quality of the food has declined so much. The arepas are driy and hard, like they have been sitting on the stove/oven all day or worse, they are reheated. Also, they looked a bit smaller. The stuffing wasn't as good as before either, and they don't make cazon anymore. I had their juices before and it was so fresh and good. This time, got the guanabana and it was bad. Not only bad that it tasted no good but in fact the juice had gone bad. The only thing that was good was the caxhapa. Had lunch with a Canadian tourist yesterday at Arepera Guacoco in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Venezuelan cuisine hit the spot. No wait. Seated immediately. Quiet place. Staff came over whenever we needed anything. She knew exactly when and to stay out of our hair while our group caught up chit chatting. Started with a large pitcher of red sangria, which was quite strong. I ordered the Reina Pepada, which was incredible! Every bite was a tiny piece of heaven. They also brought us 4 sauces. Verde a little spicy, a vegetable mayo sauce which tasted fresh and two other mayo sauces. All dairy free. Inflation and popularity have impacted them as prices went up quite a bit since 2019 when we last ate there. Can't wait to return! read more

Came for lunch with my toddler son and had the loveliest experience. Our waitress was so kind and friendly. I came here on New Years Day and although it was pretty busy, we were seated immediately and shared a table with another group. The place has a cool communal aspect. The ambiance was super cool with the Latin music and dim lighting by candles. My friends and I had the tostones to share, and the flavor was really good. The aged cheese on top was great, and they were covered by 2 of the 3 sauces that were provided on the table. One friend and I both had the pabellon arepa and my other friend got the vegetarian arepa. It was so good!! My arepa was stuffed full of shredded beef and black beans, and the sweetness of the plantain paired so well with the savory flavor of everything else. A dash of the faintly spicy green sauce on the table (not on the tostones) made it such a beautiful blend of flavors with an added brightness. I highly recommend it! Everything bomb! My go-to are Pabellon Criollo and Vegetarian Empanada with lots of their homemade green sauce. This sauce is the star! Beware that the veggie empanada has jalapeños I usually ask to not include, it's very spicy with it. It's a semi sweet empanada with black beans and cheese and jalapeños very good. And the Pabellon Criollo is basically a plated version of their arepa style. It's shredded steak with rice and beans all on the side. and I usually pair with Tejadas which are fried sweet plantains (fried yellow banana) topped with white cheese. Not sure of the name of the cheese but it's good. Slightly salty it's not parm. The shredded beef is consistently well done. Flavorful and juicy pleas add some green sauce, it heightens all their dishes here a guacuco. Portion may look small but it's filling, so come hungry. read more

I have so many mixed feelings about this place because the flavors were amazing but the textures were not. The exception is the empanada... just perfection. I tried the empanada "E Cazon" which is a fish (technically a small shark) and it was soooo good - perfectly crispy exterior, thin dough, and a succulent fish filling that doesn't require extra sauce. My mouth is watering just from writing right now. My biggest problem was the arepas... they were cooked through but they were too soft to hold the filling. Moreover, the fillings are super juicy... too juicy. The combination of the two caused the arepa to be super soggy and completely fall apart after the first bite. It was so disappointing because the flavors are so perfect - I might be biased because I am Venezuelan and the food tasted exactly like what my mom would cook. The shredded beef and chicken were juicy and not greasy with great balanced flavors. The pork filling though wasn't rich enough and the cheese they selected felt very low quality - a nice gouda would have made a significant difference. The seasoning was 5/5 throughout the meal, but I gave a 4 on flavor because the sauces weren't good and the shredded pork wasn't great either. The other issue was the presentation - they bring the food in baskets with paper underneath, which besides not attractive looking, it makes the eating experience that much harder when you combined it with all the problems I mentioned before. The flavors are so great that I would come back but probably to eat empanadas or ask for the arepa on the side. Non-Food Stuff: the service was good. The owner was there! Hope this helps!
