So I go into Wawa to pick up a door dash order. The guy asked could he help me, so I said I'm here to pick up a door dash order for Tim. He repeated the name I said, "Tim," while glancing down at the bag. Apparently, the name "Tim" was on the bag facing him, but not me. So, again, I said, "Yes. Tim." He then says what did he order. At this point, I'm getting frustrated, not because he was verifying the order, but because of what I'll explain later. Anyway, I purposely said, "Tim R. The last name initial is R." He then looks back at me with a look in his eyes that said, "that's not good enough." He asked again, "what was in the order." Just to frustrate him more, I started to offer the order number. In fact, that's the only thing that we are required to give. We are not required to show these places our phones like they often ask or list out orders. We are required to give an order number if asked. But, I went ahead and told him the order, "4 Red Bulls."
Now, I am frustrated when I go into a places that I've seen regularly hand over orders to others simply by them saying the name, but all of the sudden and unwittingly when I show up and try the same, they have discriminated thoughts of "we need to check this guy." But, what really bothers me more is how illogical some of these people are.
Imagine this. You work at Wawa. An order comes in at 9:30 pm for 4 Red Bulls. You bag the order and place the name on the bag. You turn the bag so that those on the other side of the counter can't see the name. Five minutes later, someone walks in minutes later and gives you the name for the order and delivery company, names that person can't see. You refuse to hand them the order because maybe you believe they showed up just at the right time to walk into a store with cameras everywhere and had a lucky guess of Tim out of millions of other names. All the while, the real delivery person could arrive at any time . Then the guy gives you the first initial of the last name and you still don't trust him. And keep in mind, "We talkin bout 4 Red Bulls," (in my Allen Iverson voice). Like c'mon. That's what makes my blood boil because beyond assuming I look sketchy and had nothing better to do but rob a store for 4 Red Bulls, common sense could've prevented the interrogation.
Most restaurants just have everything sitting out. I don't recommend that, but maybe not because those places never stop leaving the orders out. I imagine a Wawa is different, I'm sure ppl would take wrong orders left out, but I would put money on the fact that there has never been someone walk into that store and intentionally gave the wrong name to steal an order. I've been living in my body for 46 years, there's something (rather not go there) about me that has for most of my adult life cause me to be treated as suspicious.
And there are always skeptics who will make excuses. Well maybe this or maybe that. The store was empty and I gave the last name initial. Anyway, just don't let your discrimination cause you to lose your common sense. Like I said, I was gonna give the order number but from his strong disregard of me giving the last initial, I figure that he was not following as I tried to walk him through logic.
Anyone who paid attention in high school probabilities understands that he could've just handed me the order I asked for by name, which name only he could see. read more
