I stopped by wagon train bbq on the way up to a trip in the Adirondacks and was pleasantly surprised by there bbq. I ordered a half a pound of brisket with Mac and cheese and collared greens. The brisket and Mac was great, I wasn't the biggest fan of the collared greens as they were a little to watery. The service was okay seeing as we went an hour before closing it seemed they may of been a little short staffed but all in all a good place to stop! read more

After spending the day outside in the heat, my friend and I decided to check out Wagon Train BBQ, which is located at the SW corner of Mariaville Road and Burdeck Street (access point) in Rotterdam. This BBQ roadside eatery has been open for about four months and the place itself has a rustic feel and is decked out with plenty of Wild West decor and 'some interesting caricature "Wanted" posters of the staff on the walls. The place is geared towards takeout and there are a few high top tables inside for eating in. Outside the restaurant on the grassy field, there are several "lifelike" settlers and horse drawn covered wagons in a convoy headed "West" during the Gold Rush era (reenactment). The menu offerings include BBQ sandwiches/meats (pulled pork, beef brisket, Neba style roast beef, sausage, pulled chicken), ribs, burgers, salads, sides, and drinks from the cooler. A kids (lil buckaroos) menu (12 & under) is also offered. The prices are fair, sandwiches ($6.95-$7.50)/meals with one side & corn bread ($9.25-$9.75) and combo dinners ($13.25-$16.25). Most sides are $2.50-$3.25. Seniors get a 10 percent discount. For those folks who love extreme eating challenges (Man vs. Food), then take a shot at finishing off the GRAVEYARD BURGER during scheduled Graveyard Challenges. The Graveyard Burger consists of a 1 lb burger, half lb of pulled pork, half lb of beef brisket, half lb of cole slaw, half lb of mac & cheese, 2 fried eggs, 4 cheese slices, 4 bacons, onion tanglers, jalepeno bottle caps, KC BBQ sauce, on a giant roll, served with fries and onion rings, 5lbs in all. We trotted in here around 8:30PM on a quiet Saturday night and were greeted as we entered. We ordered some takeout to bring back to the ranch including the Beef Brisket Meal with one side and corn bread ($9.25) and the Pulled Pork Sandwich & Half Rack of Ribs Wagon Train Combo ($15.50) with one side & corn bread. We also ordered two additional sides ($2.50 each) and used a 15 percent off coupon found in a mailer to Schenectady homes. The food took about 10 minutes to be ready. We dug into the BBQ as soon as we got back to the ranch. The sides we ordered were very good. The cole slaw was crisp, tasted fresh & sweet , nicely seasoned and creamy. The mac & cheese (cavatappi pasta) was soft and cheesy. The potato salad was dense and creamy. However, the BBQ items were just okay. The pulled pork sandwich had tender smoked pork could've used some BBQ sauce and the big roll was very chewy, hard to eat. The beef brisket sandwich had tender beef slices were dry with some fat (a bit bland/could've used with seasonings) on a very chewy roll. The half rack of KC style ribs were average, chewy rib meat on bone with a sweet BBQ sauce. The corn bread was very soft with a sweet taste, more like a yellow sponge cake than corn bread. Overall, we'd return here again since the price is right for the amount of food, but we should try to get here earlier when the food is fresh and not sitting out too long in the heated glass case. Didn't get to actually eat there. Wife tried to take me out for Father's Day. Website and Google all say "closes at 7". Wife called earlier in the week and they confirmed. Showed up before 6 and they are serving 1 outside group. Parking lot full of POed people that made Father's Day plans getting turned around. Outside staff wouldn't speak to customers in parking lot. Food was delicious. Ordered over the phone, they were super friendly! My boyfriend and I showed up about 10 minutes early to pick up our food and it was ready! Fries were perfectly crispy and still warm even when we got home. My boyfriend got the pulled pork sandwich meal and I got the wagon train grilled cheese with pulled chicken. The only thing I wish could've been better is if my "grilled cheese" was cheesier. Stopped in here with some friends for a bite to eat before going out for the night and absolutely loved the burger that I got! Service was excellent and food came out quickly and was just hot enough that we could start eating right away. But before we could change our seats the restaurant filled up with other customers. So we were stuck in sucky seats. My companion had the rack of ribs. It look like he had a hard time getting the meat off the bone. The food came out 5 mins after ordering, never seen that before. The waitress was very nice and pleasant. Overall we found the food and service good, but not great. Although the decor would lead you to think this is a Texas BBQ joint they are really more Carolina or KC style offerings - lots of pulled pork offered in all the combo plates and brisket is not prominently featured (which is one of my key items to judge BBQ). The brisket is a bit strange, they slice it relatively thin and it seems more like a smoked roast beef than a nice, marbled, grainy brisket. They also serve the brisket already pre-sauced - I even requested sauce on the side and was told the meat was already sauced. This is typically a red flag that the brisket is not good enough to stand on its own. While it tasted good, it seems mislabeled as brisket. Our waitress was pleasant and hard working but we did have some minor issues that keep me from giving a higher rating. read more

Also all the sides we tried were delicious- I highly recommend the chips, cornbread or mac n cheese. The two bbq sauces we tried had great flavor too! This place does apparently get busy as when we got there, we had a bit of a wait. This restaurant could benefit from the services of an interior designer. I get it, barbecue joint wants to give you that country cabin feel. However, every inch of everything is covered with firearms, knives, or taxidermy. The chairs must weigh at least 40 pounds a piece so they are difficult to scoot in and out. The restaurant has poor lighting as well. Our wait staff were fairly quick and efficient. However, the wait staff could use a bit of a smile or some kind of emotion. I truthfully believe my waitress was sedated. The food: most of the items seemed to be on the pricey side. Most real BBQ joints tend to be pricey. However, the most affordable option was the pulled pork sandwich combo which was priced between $12-15. I chose to try the pulled pork sandwich, a side of onion rings, and a side of Mac and cheese. I honestly could not taste any smoke on the pulled pork, it was relatively flavorless without sauce. The Mac and cheese was decent, and the onion rings were on the soggy side. Overall, the restaurant was clean, and the waitresses were efficient. However, the restaurant could use some better lighting, new decor, and less shit on the walls/ceiling. read more

Coming down from Lake Placcid to New Jersey you find yourself in an almost black hole of food that is Route 87, driving down almost 2.5 hours with no real rest stops and no good food nearby from the other reviews this place seems like an oasis in a desert. We called ahead to ask if we can bring our dog and were told no problem so we were happy about that. Approaching, there's some great statues of animals displayed on the lawn that gave us almost a false impression that this actually might have good food with all the effort to make it look westerly. Once we arrived inside we immediately were told that we received bad information over the phone and we wouldn't be waited on outside but we could take out and eat in the patio. The place itself is dark and although the waiters are friendly we were expecting to be waited on. Once we ordered our food, the service was pretty quick but then we arrived at our issue and the reason for the one star review: The Food. I've gone to many restaurants and it takes a lot to write a 1 star review but honestly the food is just uninspired, stale, greasy and the brisket was borderline inedible. The egg rolls came out and looked like they were fried and popped and they still served it. The egg rolls were black on the inside and completely inedible. I didn't even get a chance to take a picture of it and once we told the waiter the "chef" said out loud "I didn't even look at it". At this point we just want to leave and this same "chef" decided to tell my friend, who was wearing a Nirvana shirt, to name 3 Nirvana songs.... At Rich's request we gave their steaks another try... (they WERE having a difficulty with their supplier, which is now very obvious). We were greeted at the door and given a choice of seating. Service was excellent as it has always been. Drinks were at the table in no time. They were running their ribeye special again and what an improvement! Great ribeye at a great price ($15.95). Steaks were cooked as ordered and had nice blackened grill marks, which are especially tasty on this fat containing cut. A friend was with me tonight and said this is the most steak she's ever eaten, so good... better than an old resturant near the NY Capital. (I've never had their steak, so I'll leave that alone.) This ribeye was very good and is big enough, you may take half home. Sides were fresh and tasty. The onion rings and jalapeño bottle caps were hot and crispy and yet held onto their coating. Mac and cheese was delicious, though it could have been warmer... maybe I spent too much time with the steak? Since this place is so close to home, I'm glad that Rich took the time to make this right. We all have difficulties at times, but honorable businesses deliver what is expected. Return to BBQ Mecca (irony much?). The owner/Chef greeted us, along with his daughter who was our waitress. We actually gave him a heads up about YELP* and challenged him to advertise a "GO AHEAD: YELP* US!" sign, as we love reading the local reviews. On to the meal: The Pulled Pork is the highlight of the menu (quote from my wife) and is by far the best Pulled Pork that we've eaten (and we've eaten Pulled Pork around the world. The Brisket was good and moist tonight, and our experience with Brisket is usually a hit or miss at most places. The Mac N Cheese uses great tasting cheese and the corn bread was AWESOME!!!! Highly recommend the Citrus Chipotle sauce over the KC BBQ (personal preference), as it suckers you in with it's sweetness before giving you a punch in the mouth! My wife and I came here on a whim with our friend George. It was a great spur of the moment decision. The free fresh popped popcorn was a great starter. I had the pulled rib sandwich meal. The sandwich was fantastic. The cornbread side was amazing. I wasn't wild about the potato salad, but my wife's coleslaw was awesome. She also had the pulled chicken sandwich and the chicken was cooked perfectly. George had the pulled pork sandwich and said he enjoyed it as well. After a great first meal, we had to return. My wife and I came back for lunch a few days later. She had her pulled chicken sandwich again but I opted for the wagon train hot dogs. I opted not to have mustard or onions on the dog, but they would've complimented the taste of the dogs, which had big visible chunks of onion anyway. I enjoyed the dogs very much, and will get them again the next time I'm there. Only downside to the hot dogs is that they're shown on the menu as $7.95 but came up on the bill as $8.95. Oh well. The fries that came with the dogs were very good too. Of course I needed more cornbread, so I added that as a side, and once again it was great. I can't wait until I get to eat here again. Richard and his staff provided top notch food and service for us once again. He let us customize our catering menu to include a whole pig, an extra tray of pulled pork and a tray of settlers beans. The food was delivered fresh, hot, and on time and his staff quickly unpacked and decorated the pig for us so our guests able to see it and take some pictures. The pig was quickly butchered and put in a serving tray still piping hot. The food was delicious and our guests were so impressed. Food: 85/100 Their table sauces are absolutely delicious. The rib sandwich was amazing, the pulled pork was a teeny bit dry, but still had really good flavor. The sandwiches are served on a delicious, almost brioche style, bun. The coleslaw was great, very bright (not too much mayo) and went perfectly on my slightly dry pulled pork sandwich to add just to right amount of moisture and tang the sandwich needed (I only wish they served a slightly larger portion). The Mac n cheese was just okay, although I'm not really a huge fan of Mac n cheese in general, but my husband thought he'd give it a whirl. Also, random note, but most of drinks I saw come out were bottled (bottled coke, bottled ice tea, etc.), thought that was interesting. I figured that driving 20 minutes for BBQ wouldn't be worth it, but I was pleasantly proven wrong. I'm not sure that the restaurant is near much, but don't let that dissuade you from coming here. If you 'need' barbecue sauce, it ain't fit to eat. Pretty sure the "barbecue" was made in crockpots and ovens. The collard greens were about 4 days old. They served frozen, pre-made pies. My mother just called to place an order for takeout. When she was asked on the phone by the girl what her sides were, my mom said she needed a second to quickly look at the menu to see the sides. The girl at Wagon Train put the phone down and said "Does she think I have all fu*#king night to wait for her!!" And then picked the phone up and hung up on my mother. My mother called back and told the girl she heard what she said and how inappropriate and vulgar that was and the girl stumbled over her words and said she wasn't talking to her and was again- very rude. Also, denying she hung up on her. My mom went to pick up the food and asked to speak with the manager who supposedly was the same girl who took her order. She said her name was Rachel. The girl would not look my mom in the eye and said she her vulgar language earlier on the phone was not directed to her but to a coworker which it was obvious she was 100% lying. In closing.... DO NOT GO HERE. Terrible customer service, rude and immature staff. Completely inappropriate for a "manager" or any staff member to treat a customer over the phone like that.
