Brass Monkey is a great little spot tucked away in town. You have to try their purple cowboy wings. Just do it. They're a little pricey, $19 now per order. But they are worth it. Their pizza, quesadillas, and burgers are all great!! I went last week and ordered the pork burrito, whereas my friend ordered the beef burrito. They consisted of meat, rice, and beans. It would be nice to see some cheese, tomato, or onion. And maybe a specialty sauce to add flavor!! Like a tangy teriyaki for the pork burrito. Other than that I will be back of course. The plans was all ours inside and out and the owners and staff could not have been more cooperative or gracious!!! They were wonderful! Now let me tell you about the food!!! We filled the place and not one of us complained about the menu or food!! It was all fantastic! There is not many restaurant selections in Johnstown so I was excited to see this place in Yelp. Small place with a cool bar and power all. Maybe 10 sit down tables. Started with the house salad and enjoyed it along with their homemade blue cheese. Purple cow wings were excellent, love a good charred wing, fully cooked and tender, fall of the bone almost. Maybe in the top 5 wings I have ever had. They were that good. I took a star away for charging $1 for blue cheese and celery, just add it to the cost of the wings, getting 3 tiny pieces of celery felt kinda cheap. I just moved to this area and all my friends told me that I just had to go to this place. We were one of two tables just sitting down. The other four tables were paying and leaving. The bar was empty. There was an event in town so I think it was mostly empty at 7 pm because of this. A waitress finally appeared and offered menus. I asked for a drink recommendation, as this was my first visit. She recommended a margarita and my friend got a Shirley temple. My margarita ended up being in a half glass, and was $9. No where near worth it especially since they only had two tequila choices. A José and a well tequila. I opted for the José and a water. Still not worth the money. Water was forgotten 3 times. We ordered the house specialty of "purple cow" chicken wings, as my friends promised the best wings ever. Mistakenly asked for them extra crispy. They came out black. Iron skillet black. The sauce was good, would've been better on chicken that didn't get forgotten on the grill for an hour. Wings did come out fairly quickly which is weird for how black they were. Now dinner... I ordered a chicken cordon blue sandwich with fries. And my friend a chicken and bacon quesadilla. Two fairly simple dishes which shouldn't take long to come out. An hour and 10 minutes later... Dinner finally comes out. What in the world could take over an hour to produce those two dishes? The only other table there was on their second plate of wings. So the kitchen was in no way overwhelmed. I bit into my sandwich which was raw. Great! My waitress offered to "put it back on" or get me a new dish. I didn't have another hour to wait for another meal, as I was paying a babysitter to be out for dinner with my friend. I was so turned off by the fact that they would've attempted to reheat my sandwich, I said neither please and just ate the fries. My friends quesadilla was ok. Had to drown it in salsa (zero flavor) and sour cream to get it down. Almost $50 later (after checking to see that my meal was not included) for two drinks, one of them non-alcoholic, an order of wings, and one meal. And almost 2 hours in restaurant. I probably will not be back, unless someone else is buying and I'm already half in the bag. read more

Visited the second night open, and can't wait for my second visit. Ordered the purple cow wings, which are parcooked in a deep fryer and finished off on the grill. Fiat wings are single bone, which must be a fun time prepping from a cooks stand point. Afterwards, they're all tossed in some sort of tangy, sweet, spicy oil based sauce. I asked what was in it, and was left to wonder. For my meal I ordered a shredded Chipotle beef burrito dubbed simply, "the cow". What I got was a beautiful hand crafted wrap with a hearty helping of beef and rice, with a generous amount of cheese. Served with chips, sour cream and freshly made salsa. The beef was not very spicy, so I wouldn't be worried about heat. The service was great, and the atmosphere was light and friendly. The only thing I could suggest is seasoned rice in the burrito, instead of the plain white they used. I will definitely be back. read more

I really like Brass Monkey. The modern, sleek ambiance, the bold flavors, friendly staff, and the ample bottle selection make the Brass Monkey a pretty regular dinner destination for me. If chicken wings are your thing, you have to go with their purple cow wings. They are thick, grilled wings on a smoky, barbecue-based sauce. I'm sure if you ask nicely, you could also get some of the sauce to dip in some fries, so you need not miss out on this delight. My particular favorite here is the pizza. The gorilla slice is similar to what DC residents might call a "jumbo slice," well over a foot long. If you've got a big crew, go with the extra large pizza and they'll have to put the pizza on its own table. What I love about the pizza is that they use full fat mozzarella, instead of the industry-standard part skim. Your cardiologist might disagree, but I do love the richness this creates. The past three times I was there, I asked if they had any pineapple to put on the pizza. Only once was I successful, but the delciousness that is pineapple pizza makes it worth asking every time. On my most recent dining trip, my companion ordered a vegan burrito with no dairy or meat. The first half of her burrito fit this specification completely, but the other half contained cheese. Still, they made it right, so Brass Monkey remains one of my favorite choices when I'm going out in Gloversville. read more

We used to go often. The last few times we went, there was no one at the bar for a long time. This past time we waited for 15 minutes for someone to come out. I peeked my head in the back kitchen through the window and saw a dog in the kitchen, which made us decide to not order food. Stumbled upon this great find after a client meeting in Johnstown. I wasn't very hopeful to find a solid place to eat in what I thought was the middle of nowhere. Fortuitously discovered Brass Monkey and the rest is history. I was blown away by the decor, food, and owners. Great people who were even gracious enough to open their kitchen before the officially open. The purple cow wings are amazing and I absolutely loved their fries. The table next to us had steamers for an appetizer. When I asked where they were on the menu, the waitress said they were a special. She never said anything about specials to us prior to ordering. Order takeout tonight and thought wed give this a try and were told a 30min pick up time. Ordered one "the bomb burger" one chef salad and an order of purple cow wings. Arrived to pick up the food on time so nothing sat for a period of time. The bomb burger was ordered medium, got home and it was rare. The buns were beyond soggy so the entire burger was mushy. The fries that came on the side were also not crispy, adding to the over all mushy theme of the plate. Next the chef salad, got home and it was a house salad. A nice house salad but disappointing for a meal. The purple cow wings, greasy, not very spicy and charred. Terrible meal. The restaurant was not particularly busy but it took 1 1/2 hours to get our meals. There were six of us. 3 burgers, 1 taco, 1 bologna sandwich and 1 Caesar salad with chicken. Burgers and bologna sandwich were cold. 1 burger was ordered with bacon and barbecue sauce which did not come with burger. 4 orders of fries were cold and under cooked. I stopped in to The Brass Monkey for dinner. The staff was very friendly and the food was amazing. I had the Adirondack Burger which consisted of a huge burger patty, topped with sauteed onions, bacon and fried egg and fries were included. The burger was cooked to perfection, exactly the way I expected so I really enjoyed it. My server checked on me a couple of times to see how everything was and refill my Pepsi. The dining area was lit by candles which was very relaxing and it was clean. For the sports fans, I didn't count the number of TVs mounted on the walls but there must have been at least six. I told all my friends about it and I would recommend The Brass Monkey to everybody. It's really a hidden gem. read more

Nice place for that sports bar feel. The pizza and wings are very good and in the summer time it's nice to sit out on the deck.

The wings were good and so were the burgers. Will come back next year when we're back in town for the Hall of Fame Inductions.

The Fish Hot Dog Unfortunately a friend and I stopped in to this establishment for a drink and a quick bite to eat. Before I explain all the gruesome details of the drinks and the food, let me make it clear that there is nothing more that I want then to see a place with potential succeed in this area because truthfully this area seems to lack any sign of a unique dinning experience, and especially a wholesome one. It all started when I ordered a drink. I was excited because they actually had the vodka I like for a gimlet. When my drink arrived there was a dead fly floating in my drink...it was right on the top so I took my napkin fished it out. Gross I know...I didn't order a new one or even tell my friend because I didn't want a big awkward moment. Next, regretfully we ordered our food. We went with their signature dish of "purple chicken wings" and two fish tacos. Simple snack many would think....When the wings arrived they looked and smelled alright, except for the fact the they we laying in a pool of franks red hot sauce (pretty signature eh?) Then when I took a bite I noticed how burt the chicken wings were. Nowhere on the menu does it say "blacked chicken wings". Gross. I tried to take a photo of the chicken wings but it was so dark in there you could barely see them, or anything else you were eating. Ambiance is great, but it's important to be able to see your food too. Last came the two tacos (one last shot at redemption) Sadly the fish tacos came to us in the form of a cold stiff flour tortilla wrapped around a hot piece of fish smothered in cold, coleslaw. WTF. It was barely edible. Not only did the cold chewy tortilla rub me the wrong way, but the "chipotle" coleslaw was just carrots and cabbage slathered in an orange tinted mayonnaise. Wow it was gross. The only thing that I thought could make this edible was the fish way down at the bottom. One whole piece of tilapia laid into a cold tortilla, whole, not cut up at all.. it was a fish hot dog. Needless to say my dinning experience was a real let down, especially because I want places like this to thrive in our area. I am not ruling out the fact that maybe the staff was short that night, or maybe it was just an off day for people..I realize the stress of the food industry, having worked in it, but there were two other tables besides us that night, with no more than three people. That is not stress, that is bad food service. I hope that this place can turn around, and put more energy and passion into their food, because that is truly was makes a restaurant worth coming back to over and over. read more
