We had to charge across the street so stopped in. We started with hush puppies which were decent. Son had a cheeseburger and said it was amazing- It was gigantic. I finally made it here for my birthday on a Saturday night at 5PM. However, upon being seated our waitress told us they were out of ribs. Huh? Apparently with Monday being a holiday (Memorial Day) they stopped making them because they didn't want leftovers so they ran out 2 days in advance. Boo! I had already eaten and enjoyed their burgers but I really wanted ribs. We started with an order of hushpuppies. Like before, they were good and our toddler enjoyed them. I settled on beef brisket (1 pound) with a side of mac and cheese. The meat was great and reminded me a lot of corned beef with smoke added. However, the mac and cheese was bloated and tasteless. My wife had the smoked chicken and pulled pork combo. The pork was fine but I make it better at home. Harrison had a kiddie plate of "Wing Dings" (chicken strips) that were fine. With soda for two added, the total was $125 before tip. I felt like that was a lot of money for not a lot of food, especially since the chicken was dry, the mac and cheese was bad, and I make excellent pulled pork. Perhaps I am just sad because I rarely get out here, and had looked forward to my birthday meal here for several years so to find out they were out of ribs was really disappointing. After seeing Wagon Train BBQ featured on America's Best Restaurants, I knew I had check it out. With that said, as soon as I walked into the restaurant, I knew it would be good. To start, I ordered the brisket nachos and they were excellent. The chips were fresh and the queso was cheesy and tasty. In addition, the brisket was delicious. The brisket was tender, juicy, with just the right amount of fat. These were simply great nachos. Next, I ordered the Midnight Rider Burger with fries. The burger was topped with pulled pork, BBQ sauce, and macaroni and cheese. Knowing that, the burger was very good. To explain, the burger was juicy and the beef had great flavor. Furthermore, the pulled pork was solid and went well with the burger. Also, the macaroni and cheese was enjoyable. It was really cheesy and creamy. However, the bun was really soggy from the toppings. Likewise, I think they forgot the BBQ sauce which made my burger a bit dry. Still, the burger was scrumptious. Additionally, the fries were fine. A year ago a firefighter friend told me about this restaurant after their unfortunate fire. He talked about how wonderful the food was and how they had some of the best barbecue this side of the mason dixon line. He raved about their ribs and their chicken. I was finally out in the area for lunch and decided to stop in...I mean if it is good enough for a firefighter then it must be good. I arrived and was told that they didn't have ribs or chicken. They were still in the smoker. Ok...guess than means that I'll have to make a trip back to get it...so I asked when they usually had ribs or chicken. The answer is usually by 2 unless they have a big catering order. Ok...maybe the fact their menu just said "market price" should have indicated the scarcity of ribs that you can't offer them at a barbecue restaurant until half way through the day...so I'm like what can I get and the waitress suggested the brisket dinner. Ok that sounds good. I ordered it...I should be able to get a good taste of their unique flavors. The restaurant isn't large but is well decorated with a western kind of theme. They definitely have a collection of shotguns that decorate the place which completes the outlaw western theme. It feels like you stepped into a local western bar and has the friendly local friendly feel to match. This they did great on. The waitress brings the brisket. I have never in my life seen brisket cut up into squares and without any sauce or rub...until now. The meat was not tough but it was not tender either. The brisket had a good chunk of fat on each, unflavored square. So if you love unflavored meat with some fat on it that isn't grizzly or fall apart tender this is your place. Maybe a little barbecue sauce on top of the meat...wait it is served with a tub of butter. Or is that for the cold cornbread? I was confused. A barbecue place with no barbecue sauce. However, the Cole slaw was very good. Probably the only really good thing on the plate that I can say, yea, my firefighter friend was right. This definitely has the feel of a family run place. You can tell they have relationships with the locals and the people are quite friendly....but it feels like the food is an afterthought. Had I known how disappointing the food would be and that they wouldn't have ribs...I would have headed over to Memphis King. Would I recommend? Not at this point. Major disappointment. Food was just not good at all and insanely overpriced. Went with a friend who was in the mood for some good BBQ, figured we would give this place a shot and boy did we regret it. We both ordered the pick 2 platters, trays arrived pretty quickly and were a lot smaller than expected but we dove in. The meats were pretty bland, lacked any real flavor and you could tell that it was not prepared fresh, as if just reheated. We ended up packing most of it up but the food didn't sit well with either of us after, had stomach pains for the rest of the day/night. Lesson learned on our end but def would not recommend. Also we asked for some bread rolls to go along with the platters and was charged an extra $8 for it. Total for two pick 2 platters, 2 drinks and some bread was $96.... Been feeling BBQ for a week now after my horrible experience elsewhere. Had wagon train BBQ a few months back at a party and it was definitely memorable, juicy and delicious . So night I ordered through the online app they offered through their website. Decided to do pickup as it was already 640pm and they close by 8pm sharp. Ordered 2 cornbread sides, beans, coleslaw, half rack of ribs (naked), pulled pork meal and 1/2 pound brisket. Estimated quote time for pick up was only 10-20 minutes, got an email saying my order will be ready at 7pm. Showed up a little after 7pm, maybe 705pm greeted at the door by a line for to gos and numerous tables filed. The decor is rustic/hunting but gives you something unique to look/talk about while waiting. Only waited at most 5 minutes for those people to be taken care of and then my turn. I told the young lady working there my name and she handed me the 2 bags and was polite. Off we go and everything ordered was in there. Even an extra BBQ sauce for the ribs! Pulled pork was fresh, saucy and delicious. Brisket was scrumptious. Ribs were a little dry when ordered naked, lucky we had that extra side of sauce! But noted for next time to order with the sauce on the ribs. Fries were cool but heated up in the air fryer and back to goodness. Coleslaw is amazing, added it to my pulled pork sandwich . Beans have a little spin on them, baked and different styles of beans mixed together with shaving or drippings of meat. Well worth the 70$!! I now know where I will head to hole up when the zombie apocalypse comes: Wagon Train BBQ. In addition to the firearms hanging from the ceiling and knives on the walls, there's an enormous amount of food stockpiled. In all seriousness, Wagon Train is a lot of fun. The kitschy decor and the (somewhat falling apart) actual wagon train outside are cool, and the service is fast and friendly. The barbecue is more on the roasted side than the classic long-smoked slow-cooked style, but it's fine. I will recommend you get your ribs and such "naked" and apply sauce separately, though, as there was a prodigious amount of salt in everything, and the KC style sauce is quite sweet as well. We also sprung for the pickle fries on special, which were fabulous (although again, hella salty), and the cole slaw and beans were freshly prepared and tasty if not terribly tangy. Our junior cowpoke had the piggy dogs special, a concoction of jalapeño cheese and pickle toppings, which he enjoyed quite a bit. It's always nice to see specials and house originals on a menu. Nice plus to be able to get a beer here, which I can't say about all the BBQ places 'round here. We'll definitely be back, for the ambiance and when we're in the mood for this style BBQ. And we'll hope they cut down on the salt some. (In the meantime, Memphis King is still the King.) read more

The interior is covered in taxidermy stuffed animals, guns, old west pictures and various other artifacts. The walls and tables are all wood with some tables having benches that could fit more than one person. Yeehah!!! Now onto the food. The waitress seated us quickly and got us our drink order, unsweetened iced tea for me and coke for my husband. They do have wine and beer as well. My iced tea tasted like plain water so she apologized and got me a bottled one instead. She explained that the person who made it must not have made it strong enough. I ordered a special with a burnt ends sandwich, it came with cornbread and one side. I chose the settler's beans. My husband got the pulled pork sandwich with fries and cornbread. My burnt ends were fantastic, flavorful and tender beef brisket lightly charred and chopped into pieces. They came on a light and fluffy bun. The cornbread was average and too sweet for my liking. The settler's beans were hearty and tasty and reminded me of mild chili with meat and and several types of beans. I look forward to eating my leftovers for lunch. My husband enjoyed the pulled pork, I snuck a bite and it had a sauce that tastes subtle in a good way. The fries were average but really good dipped in the two different homemade barbecue sauces. My wife was looking to try a burger somewhere we'd never been before. Scanning the internet in the direction of Schenectady she stumbled across Wagon Train BBQ. The menu sounded inviting so into the GPS went the address and off we went. Upon arriving you may think you've come across one of those old-west, frontier town amusement parks with a wagon train, oxen, cattle, and early settler manikins outside. Inside, the walls are covered in batten board with some stone and everywhere you look you will see old guns and tools of the time. With about a half dozen beers available on tap, we went with pints of the only craft beers offered - Adirondack IPA and Brown's Oatmeal Stout ($5 each). We'll need to remember, if and when we return, to request non-frosted glasses. I'm sure those who order the non-craft beers actually prefer the extra cold vessel. My wife chose among the many burgers offered, the Wagon Train Burger ($11.95) with the side of French fries. It came topped with crunchy onion "tanglers", jalapeño "bottle caps", American cheese, and a chipotle aioli spread. Requested medium-rare, it came out more like medium but still tasty. The fresh baked roll was very tasty also, although very chewy and already soggy on the bottom when it was served. I wanted to try so many different things but didn't want to over order. So with the expectation of returning, I ordered a Combo of Half Rack of Ribs & Half Chicken ($20). It came with a side of corn bread and my chosen side of potato salad. I had another choice to be made in the style of ribs - naked, KC, or citrus chipotle sauce. I chose the naked, just dry rubbed. I definitely needed the knife provided to slice the ribs apart, but the meat was still tender and very flavorful even though it didn't fall off the bones. The Chicken had a good amount of flavor both on its skin and in the meat itself. The wing meat was moist, the drumstick was on the dry side, the thigh meat was moist, and the breast was dry in some spots but moist in others. Both ribs and chicken had a good amount of smoke flavor. On the table were bottles of their KC sauce and their citrus chipotle sauce. I tried just a little of each and liked the citrus chipotle the best. I'll keep that in mind for future reference. The potato salad was quite good and my wife said she could taste the flavor of some celery salt. The corn bread was one of the best I've had, moist and reasonably light in texture. There was a special offered this night of a Burnt Ends sandwich. Hopefully, it might be offered again the next time we visit. Service by Alicia was friendly and attentive. There is outdoor seating available if that is your preference. The air conditioning inside is more than adequate, you might want to bring a sweater. read more

After spending the day outside in the heat, my friend and I decided to check out Wagon Train BBQ, which is located at the SW corner of Mariaville Road and Burdeck Street (access point) in Rotterdam. This BBQ roadside eatery has been open for about four months and the place itself has a rustic feel and is decked out with plenty of Wild West decor and 'some interesting caricature "Wanted" posters of the staff on the walls. The place is geared towards takeout and there are a few high top tables inside for eating in. Outside the restaurant on the grassy field, there are several "lifelike" settlers and horse drawn covered wagons in a convoy headed "West" during the Gold Rush era (reenactment). The menu offerings include BBQ sandwiches/meats (pulled pork, beef brisket, Neba style roast beef, sausage, pulled chicken), ribs, burgers, salads, sides, and drinks from the cooler. A kids (lil buckaroos) menu (12 & under) is also offered. The prices are fair, sandwiches ($6.95-$7.50)/meals with one side & corn bread ($9.25-$9.75) and combo dinners ($13.25-$16.25). Most sides are $2.50-$3.25. Seniors get a 10 percent discount. For those folks who love extreme eating challenges (Man vs. Food), then take a shot at finishing off the GRAVEYARD BURGER during scheduled Graveyard Challenges. The Graveyard Burger consists of a 1 lb burger, half lb of pulled pork, half lb of beef brisket, half lb of cole slaw, half lb of mac & cheese, 2 fried eggs, 4 cheese slices, 4 bacons, onion tanglers, jalepeno bottle caps, KC BBQ sauce, on a giant roll, served with fries and onion rings, 5lbs in all. Finish this BURGER and sides in under 30 minutes and get a free T-shirt (I Survived The Graveyard Burger Challenge) and your picture up on the Wall of Fame. We trotted in here around 8:30PM on a quiet Saturday night and were greeted as we entered. We ordered some takeout to bring back to the ranch including the Beef Brisket Meal with one side and corn bread ($9.25) and the Pulled Pork Sandwich & Half Rack of Ribs Wagon Train Combo ($15.50) with one side & corn bread. We also ordered two additional sides ($2.50 each) and used a 15 percent off coupon found in a mailer to Schenectady homes. The food took about 10 minutes to be ready. We dug into the BBQ as soon as we got back to the ranch. The sides we ordered were very good. The cole slaw was crisp, tasted fresh & sweet , nicely seasoned and creamy. The mac & cheese (cavatappi pasta) was soft and cheesy. The potato salad was dense and creamy. However, the BBQ items were just okay. The pulled pork sandwich had tender smoked pork could've used some BBQ sauce and the big roll was very chewy, hard to eat. The beef brisket sandwich had tender beef slices were dry with some fat (a bit bland/could've used with seasonings) on a very chewy roll. The half rack of KC style ribs were average, chewy rib meat on bone with a sweet BBQ sauce. The corn bread was very soft with a sweet taste, more like a yellow sponge cake than corn bread. Overall, we'd return here again since the price is right for the amount of food, but we should try to get here earlier when the food is fresh and not sitting out too long in the heated glass case.
