I've been wanting to visit for a long time! I had to try the infamous steak sandwich so I got the King (a steak roll) with Pepper Jack cheese, peppers, onions, mushrooms and tomato sauce. I also got an order of onion rings. The sandwich was fantastic though I must admit I would omit the tomato sauce next time. It was a little too heavy for me with all that sauce. The onion rings were perfectly cooked and totally hit the spot. Overall, it's a classic looking place that has been a Schenectady staple for decades. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The king steak sandwich is the flagship item. It's basically a Philly cheesesteak without the wit', but with the addition of a brassy tomato sauce. I added cheese, which was, of course, a good idea, and roasted peppers, which didn't make much difference. The king can definitely serve two, and there's also the queen to serve one on a round bun. if you eat two kings, you get your name on the roll of honor on the wall, three kings you also get a T-shirt, four kings, your fourth is free, fifth king not up for discussion. My first time here, drove past it hundreds of times. This is an old location, but clean. We stopped at lunch time and it wasn't busy at all. The menu is quite extensive, a lot of fried food, but I was interested in only one item, the steak sandwich and it was good. It was shaved steak served on a toasted roll which came out piping hot. A Schenectady Erie Blvd. icon even under new ownership. Ordered takeout on a Sunday around 3 pm instead of eating in as in the past pre Covid. Not sure of the cleanliness in eating area, but I was not up close to tables. The one outstanding cook and one waitress were busy handling orders for four tables, a postal worker sitting at the counter, and a couple of takeout orders I was aware of. Kudos to them. The waitress was polite when she greeted me at the register by the entrance. The cook was a well oiled machine of efficiency, multi tasking, and purpose. I watched him work since I was waiting by the doorway. He finished my order and checked me out efficiently. He immediately returned to manning his grills. A king size steak sandwich was ordered with onions, peppers, sauce, and provolone cheese. My husband loved it, especially the tender high quality slices/pieces of steak that were used to make the sandwich. The roll was fresh'. The onion rings were good. I wanted the seafood plate, but they were out of fried clams. I had the fish plate. The four pieces of breaded cod were good not great. It was typical frozen fish. The cocktail sauce was homemade and delicious. The cole slaw was very good, but not sure whether it was made in house. The fries were hot and crispy, tasted excellent and so plentiful, I could only eat half. I should have ordered the queen size steak sandwich. We ordered two of the unique, customized steak burgers for supper today: the Juicy Lucy ( a delicious 1/2 pound cheeseburger with extra cheese) served in a wonderfully freshly prepared bun, and the pineapple burger. Both burgers were served with good French fries. The food was ready to go when we arrived. We picked up the burgers because they no longer deliver. Okay, I found out about this place very late in the game. I guess it has changed owners over the years, closed, reopened, etc. In fact, my Lyft driver, who was a local, told me it was closed - on our way to it (6/18/18). He was wrong. It was open and I am happy about that. I must say that I was surprised at how good the food is! The Open Faced King Size Steak Sandwich is humongous. It is enough for 2 people, so of course I ate the whole thing in 15 minutes - with a large order of Bacon and Cheddar Fries. This place is a memory from my childhood and I'm glad to see the new owners are bringing it back to what it was. The sandwiches were just like I remember. Not too greasy on super fresh bread and quick. We got fries and again just as I remember crispy delicious and a large portion. I will definitely be back. Also we had a hound dark haired slender waitress and she was really great. She was friendly and made sure we had everything. However 11/26/21 left a lot to be desired , the back room was closed off the over head light did not work. We could not even get a glass of milk , they had a cup left! I hope that Steven Spielberg makes More ETs. The first ET was such a big hit, I don't understand why there were no more. Apparently the owner of More ETs feels the same way. WHAT TO GET: Steak Sandwich WHY: Because I said so I don't get it. This has to be THE most underrated place in the history of Yelp. Usually when Adam Richman (or whoever) has visited a place and said it's great, it usually sucks. Because normally (I think) they have to pay to be on those shows, and if you're paying to be on those shows it's probably because customers won't visit you for the food alone, so you have to "get famous" to sell your products. Not the case with Morette's. Easily one of the most delicious, juiciest sandwiches I've ever eaten. The fact that it's wetter than my ex is a huge bonus because I love wet stuff, but the taste and bread and everything were off the charts good. It was a long wait, but it was worth it. Not the cheapest sandwich in the world, but one of the more delicious American sandwiches, ever. It's a crime, and insane, that it's 2.5 stars when it's a 5-star sandwich. The service was perfectly fine too. I implore everyone to come and try this sandwich and if I'm right, then help get this business rating back where it belongs. Wanted to love this mom and pop and give to the local community. I would say it was good but wasn't loving it totally. My friend and I started with the queen appetizer which included breaded fried mushrooms, onion rings and mozzarella sticks. All of it was fried to perfection. We also got an large order of onion rings. I think out of the three the onion rings and than the mushrooms were the best. The mozz sticks were on the small size. We both ordered the steaks with provolone cheese, onions and peppers and red sauce. The sauce was very good and thicker then other reviews I read/heard about and flavored well. We were given 3 sauces for dipping: a russian, horseradish and more of that red sauce. All sauces were tasty but I would have liked the raspberry sauce for my mozzarella sticks but that didn't make or break things. The steak was very good, tender but not huge and the roll it came in was nothing special. My friend thought the burgers people were having around us looked good but I guess we'll have to see on another visit. read more

Lunch Jan 22 Old family run diner, been there for years. Real old timey feel. All of which I love. Very simple diner type menu. But known for a Steak Sandwich grilled with onions but topped with tomato sauce..hey when in Rome right? So I ordered it and thought it was pretty flavorless, needed salt, pepper, wish I would of had cheese on top. It was just kinda plain. And dont call me a hater, nothing wrong with tradition and I am sure there are folks who eat that sandwich 2x a week...but for me..it was a "one and done"..BUT, I would go back and try their other offerings - their burgers looked amazing! I ordered cheddar and believe this was American. Had to remove cheese using a paper towel in order to eat without gagging. Could not eat the soggy bread, so I ended up using a fork and knife to just eat the contents. Taste: 5/10 Actual content of the sandwich was good. Meat tasted quality and was not tough. Jalapenos were good. Onions were fine. Tomato was not chopped, but it was fine. Value: 6/10 Sub-$10 sandwich with a boatload of meat. The value is solid. Other notes: Brown paper bag for takeout is a great vibe. Getting cheese on your hands when unwrapping your sandwich foil is NOT a great vibe. Overall rating: 2/5 Probably would not get this again. Was just there at two, my king original with provolone was done and bagged before I had time to get my stomach juice flowing, and off I went, ready to eat this while driving, which really, not a five star idea. Service was kind and the value is there. If you want to read some of the other reviews I've had on this subject you know a) I can be a jerk b) spend enough of my life to know what's a cheesesteak and what's a steak and cheese (this is the later) but still very good. Like minimal grizz and the bread was deece, could have been a tad closer to the phillly, but something it's can't be replaced, but this has been one the best I've shoveled into my meathole outside the 215. It is one of my must haves every time I return to the area to visit family. I've traveled the world and have enjoyed many similar sandwiches in many locations. None compare to this outstanding meal of a sandwich! I try to tell people about their sandwiches, but always feel I fail in making the point of how delicious they truly are. Pretty close approximation of the Philly cheese steak, in either style you want (cheese whiz or chopped in provolone), made to order. That side has a certain homey quality to it that really does remind me of Philly. That includes meh bread, and a kind of sloppy sandwich, not the wrapped-in style you get in Philly. (I'm neither a Pat's nor Jim's fan, if you want to know where I'm coming from; I got my cheesesteaks from a greek Pizza joint that did them in the non-whiz style perfectly.) The menu's actually more dogs-burgers-fries-steaks, but not approaching full-on diner. You can get domestic beers, though, in tall boy cans, which is definitely old Sc'dy style. This (and Mike's and Boulevard Bowl across the street) represent a nearly unchanged slice of the all-night places that used to support the three-shift GE economy in the post-war industrial era, and that's interesting. But OTOH the place may be taking it old school a little too literally. The decor in here hasn't changed much, and it's possible the grease traps are original. The food's not quite worth a detour, and the slice of life isn't quite interesting enough either, but combined, maybe worth checking it out. But I'm probably not going to be a regular, despite my love of the cheesesteak; mediocre isn't quite enough when it comes to the grill. read more

While visiting my hometown, Schenectady, NY on Sat. 9/22/18, we had a gap between activities around 7pm and we were hungry. Stopped in to Morrette's on Erie Blvd. Note: this is walking distance from the Rivers Casino and much less expensive. Same place, same menu, different owners (2014) now. A long time lunch & dinner food stop. At it's peak the ALCO & GE, railroad depot and other businesses employed many that came to Morrette's for very good, inexpensive food. Still looks pretty much the same since I was a kid in the '50s. Morrette's claim to fame is their signature King Steak Sandwich. Their version of the Philly Cheesesteak. A large serving of sliced ribeye of beef on an Italian style steak roll with your choice of cheese, cheese wiz, peppers, onions, mushrooms, and tomato sauce. And some other varieties of steak sandwiches. Figure around $10. for the sandwich & $3. for a beer. They also offer a "Queen"-size version but alas this is served on a hamburger roll. PULEEEEEEEASE cut a steak roll in half for this. The queen deserves this much. The usual diner accompaniments - French fries, onion rings, side salads, soup, meatloaf, meatball or sausage sandwiches, soups. All beverage including bottled beer. Open Mon-Sat 11am-8pm, Sun closed. A very good value for good tasting hearty food. 50+ years is a testament to the loyalty of their customers. Know your audience and make them happy. Good job by all. read more

It's really a 2.5* review, rounded up to 3* I wanted to love this place. I love all the old anachronistic places that Schenectady has to offer. And I didn't go in thinking that this would compete with the best cheesesteaks in Philadelphia. I was looking forward to some kind of tasty upstate New York take on the dish. Since I was having lunch with a fellow adventurous food friend, we split two sandwiches, the steak sandwich and the sausage. There is also a meatball sandwich, but while they make their own sausage, the meatballs are surprisingly not made in house. The best thing we ordered were the deep fried Potato Peelers. Holy crap those were good. And the potatoes staid crispy. And the bacon was thickly cut. The industrial orange cheese sauce, brought me back to my Philly days, but I never had any fried potatoes this good in the city of brotherly love. The steak sandwich on the other hand was abysmal. The meat had that gamey, almost livery flavor of poor quality beef. All of the pictures on the menu show the steak slathered in tomato sauce. It's worth a try to get it on the side, but it may be an acquired taste. To her credit the waitress advised us to get the steak sandwich with American cheese, and we did not, opting to try it as promoted on the menu instead. A smear of extra orange cheese sauce from the Potato Peelers on the beef sandwich significantly improved it's flavor and texture. But it still battles with a roll that isn't very special. Personally I love Italian sausage sandwiches. Oddly their homemade sausage seemed to be made in the form of long flat patties. It was fennelicious. And the patties picked up a nice crust from the grill. But I wouldn't say that it was anything worth a trip. As we were leaving I counted four microwaves, which clearly do not fit into what I expected of a restaurant stuck in time. I'm glad I went. It is worth experiencing for the nostalgia factor. I first tried Morrette's once a few years ago and thought it was ok. After this last visit I won't be returning. The steak is dry and very bland. The red sauce tastes like a can of tomato paste, and the cheese sauce isn't whiz. The potato skins were just slices of potato that weren't even overly crispy covered in cheese sauce. Whenever I'm on the NYS Thruway near Schenectady, I try to take the 890 detour and have lunch at Morette's. If it's Sunday, forget it, they are at church! I was lucky this time and it was a Tuesday and lunch time. This place hasn't changed since the '60's when I attended college nearby. The steak sandwich with tomatoe sauce is still memorable with whatever you put on it, onions, mushrooms, cheese, etc. In the '60's there were tons more dives in town, like Mama Ferro's, Mother Bianchi's, Papa Luigi's (all in a row) and Diamante's. Now, with the exception of Mike's across the street, everything seems trendy and expensive. At Morette's , you can fill up for about $10 and leave with a smile. read more

Morrette's old school vibe is the only thing preventing this from being a two star review. The bread on the king steaks was tasteless and so mushy that it could barely support the meat inside. The fries, while crispy, were overly salted. The prices on the bill were uniformly higher than what was listed on the menu, and my husband was charged 25 cents for the 'free' tomato sauce because he asked for it on the side. C'mon. read more

I don't come here for the cheese steaks. They're better at Mike's. I used to come here for the cheese steaks often until the last few times I had been here, the quality of the meat seemed to go downhill, the meat seemed tougher and had a gritty texture to it, which was extremely dissatisfying. I once ordered 2 Chili Dogs to go and when I got home was horrified to see that there were chili beans all over my dog with not much sauce at all (there should be no beans in hot dog chili....), those were some of the worst I'd ever had in my life. Their fries seem like they're fresh cut but they're more of an acquired taste, not your average fast food fries, and I'm not really a fan of them. I agree with some of the other posts on here that say that the food seems like it's just entirely greasy all around. The place also needs to be updated. There are seats with big tears in them, the decor seems old and outdated, and with as big of a place as it is, I have never seen more than a handful of customers in the place at once, which is a shame, as I do like that the place exists and if they could improve the food, they should always have a line out the door. The biggest reason this review doesn't get just one star is for the fact that they have the absolute best hot fudge sundaes in the world here. The steak itself was actually pretty darn good, decently seasoned and LOTS of it. My issue was that it was nearly inedible as a sandwich because it was so large AND because the lower part of the bun was soggy from all the meat juice. I prefer to be able to eat my sandwiches, so when I had to fork and knife it I was a little disappointed. The Chili Cheese fries also rank as O.K. Good fries smothered in cheese sauce and chili. Though the Queen (steak sandwich) portions were fantastic, the meat was overcooked, and flavorless. Tasted like unseasoned meat that was shaved days ahead of time, refrigerated and heat up on the grill with some water. Not impressed by the meat at all. Had I not gotten the marinara (which was actually with perfect flavor) on too (thanks to seeing another customers order pass by my table) I don't think 3 stars would have been possible. I'm not a fan of cheese whiz, but I think that might actually work on this (rather than prov/marinara). CW looked great on other sandwiches and the place was jammed during a Thursday lunch time. So don't make your decision based on my review! SDY clearly loves it. I did appreciate the prices vs portions, the vibe/old school decor, and our waitress was super (wish I could recall her name). Grew up in the area and today was my first time eating at Morette's. Makes me wish I ate there under the previous ownership. First of all, when we walked in we were hit with a cloud of smoke and I could barely breathe. The whole front of the restaurant was in a fog. Hmm, bad ventilation system? We immediately sat in the back room. There was only one waitress in the whole restaurant. One lady was taking drink orders and that was it...would've been nice if she helped out. It took a while to put our order in, but the waitress was very friendly. The fries were frozen, not hand-cut like they were previously. That was a big letdown. And the steak sandwich was SO bland, meat dry. The onions and peppers didn't seem to help. And the red sauce had no flavor; it tasted like it came out of a can. The burger had no seasoning,the fries over done and the chicken tenders you couldn't even bite into so I'm assuming the fryers on too high cuz we were told that's the only way they come without them coming raw, so not true. The ketchup was sour but the waitress was very nice will not return.Over 30 years in restaurant management. It's worth paying a little extra for a better cook and paying attention to the details the small stuff like seasoning each burger to accompany its name.
