Morrette's is pretty good. It's a greasy place with an old vibe because it is, in fact, old. It's inexpensive. The quality of the food is nothing that will blow you away. The service is pretty good, but at times seems like it's easily distracted. It's a solid choice for lunch with a reasonable variety of things beyond their staple cheesesteaks. I just had the "King" steak sandwich a few days ago. Meh was what came to mind. Underseasoned....Yes Morrette's you have to season your sliced steak. The roll was fine and the peppers were fine....not great. It's an overhyped steak sandwich. Just a tip- put the whiz on the bottom, it holds the sandwich together better. I ate half and lost interest in the sandwich. I didn't notice that the customer service was as bad as everyone else but it was a forgettable and mediocre experience at best. My first experience at Morrette's today was so incredibly pleasant! The cost of the meal consistent with sizing. The staff was pleasant and prompt. It's nice to have an old look without an old feel. Many old photographs hang over the bar area and show Schenectady back in the day. I got the king's steak sandwich and I gotta say it's the most like Philly that I've had up here. Our server suggested we try the fry sauce (which we did) I love when places suggest things like this. I definitely will be going back again! Waited a good fifteen minutes before anyone took our order - one waitress for the front dining room while the female owner (The Queen as her shirt stated) stood behid the counter and did nothing but yell at her wait staff, move takeout bags around and make her customers feel uncomfortable by her yelling to her staff. We have eaten here countless times under the previous owners and have always had a most positive experience. We were there today and I can honestly say, we will NEVER go back. The food was "ew" - to say the - the patty melt was so tough, it was like shoe leather.....we ordered macaroni salad, they were "out".....the waitress took our order but the line cooks somehow didn't see half of our order so my friend got his sandwich but I had to wait another 15 minutes for mine. The owner is rude, unapologetic and downright crass to her staff. Overall, it was one of the worst experiences I've had while eating out. It's clear the owner is all about status and nothing more. Yes, unfortunatly this is another sad review. I remember Morrette's 20 years ago when the steak sandwich was literally the size of a large dinner plate. The new owners have changed everything except the name and the decorations. The sauce is straight Sysco canned, the meat is sub-par at best, portions are about half the size of what they were and the inside is literally FILTHY! I ordered take out and the counter was covered in sticky soda stains, the windows are cacked with grease and even the menus are stained. I LOVE greasy spoons (think Mike's across the street) but this Morrett's is about one visit from the Department of Health away from closing down. Dine at your own risk!! read more

Use to be good but with new ownership things have changed for the worse. Everything they make and i mean everything seems like it comes out of a can, bottle or is frozen. The tomato sauce is so watery that it is more like tomato soup then sauce, one time i ordered their appetizer sampler and everything was so overcooked and bunt that it was almost inedible. Also i think the owners attitude is really poor, sitting out front drinking beers and smoking cigars is not very professional and does not make your business look very good, and when we were leaving seeing us leave and knowing we were customers they didn't even thanks us for our business. with food that comes out of can and unprofessional owners that don't care if you patronize their business or not i really don't see any need to go back read more

I thought it was charming atmosphere wise. I thought the waitress was excellent. We had the queen appetizer I thought the onion rings the best, the mozzarella sticks ok but my least favorite. The sauces were delicious. I thought the meat on the steak sandwich was delicious along with the sauce and the vegetables. Had provolone on the sandwich but couldn't taste it and the bread was disappointing. I like the food, the bacon cheddar fries are awesome and pretty much have the whole pig on them :). I have enjoyed it more dining in, the food seems better then. Went in to eat Friday night because my husband from NJ has been craving a steak sandwich since we moved up here. The food was absolutely on point. The fish po boy was one of the best I've ever had and my husband loved his steak sandwich. Although the food was something that will continue to keep us coming back the service was something that ensures we will be back. Our waitress (I can't recall her name) went above and beyond! We had our year and half son with us who as any parent knows can be a handful going out to eat. Our server was beyond accommodating, loving and caring to son. Talked to him, lit up seeing him and played with him which he responded and did the same. As a patron it made my dining experience and put us at ease during our meal. It kept not only us but our son smiling. It meant more than you know! It's been a long time since we've been to dinner and not only felt comfortable but at ease. This mainstay greasy spoon on Erie Boulevard in Schenectady has an old time feel and ambiance to it. The food also has a greasy feel to it, plus the portion sizes can be generous. While I've had better food, I wouldn't be against going here again. read more

The service was slow for no good reason other than the waitress was busy chatting with other staff. The food was nowhere near the quality/quantity of that under the old ownership. The prices though, well those have increased. We weren't asked if we wanted anything else, like dessert (don't even know if they offer anything), after our meal. We went there once for takeout after we saw this restaurant showcased on the food network channel. It was quite a drive for us but worth it because the sandwiches and cheese fries we ordered were really delicious. I didn't like the parking situation but the restaurant itself is spacious and clean. Maybe needs alittle updating, though. The lady who took my order seemed stressed and overwhelmed. I think she was trying to multitask. The man who was cooking right in front of me seemed nervous and kept giving me dirty looks, as if I were bothering him. I think he was one of the owners! Very rude!!!! Not sure if I would go back. They have reopened under the same name but are operated by what's called The Martin Family. Nothing really has changed at all with the steak sandwiches for which they became famous. I can't really rate them as I'm just not a cheese steak fan and the stomach can't handle all the oil, peppers and onions. Stopped in at lunch today and the place was packed and the guys at the grill were struggling to keep up. I guess they have old loyal following. I think they still need some practice with service as I saw a number of minor order errors which I would say had a lot to due with the lunch crowd and the staff needs practice. Growing pains :) Looks like they use nicely sliced all beef in the sandwiches and they chop it up. The fries and onion rings are your typical fast food type. They came from a frozen box of onion rings and or fries from a regular Sysco box to the deep fryer. Nothing appears to battered at the store. I ordered the 1/2 Lb. hamburger which was as described freshly made that day and not a frozen patty. It was tasty and served with fries and some pickle slices. Overall the place could use a good cleanup as nothing has really changed in the restaurant interior since the old days. Generally I'm not a fan of these type of restaurants but it was worth try. Ordered a Ribeye Sandwich(it was open-faced, NOT a sandwich) with "gravy"(consistency of gelatenous motor oil) and half way through eating it I found a hair embedded amongst the meat. I notified the server who promptly removed it and asked if I would like a new sandwich along with a dessert "on the house"(dessert only!) I declined as I just wanted to get as far away as possible from the understaffing issue, flat soda and 3 previous complaining customers. The server brought our bill and to my complete and utter shock, I WAS CHARGED FOR A MEAL THAT HAD A HAIR IN IT! As I was getting up to pay Ms. Martin(Owner) arrived to the establishmant and laced into the cook about his hair being to long and that he needed to get a haircut before his next shift. I was rung up for our meal by Ms. Martin who did not make eye contact nor have an apology/general concern for such a vile incident. However, she did seem concerned with finding time to have a cocktial or two... as there was an odor eminating from her direction consistent with alcohol. Perhaps if there was a respectable and responsible Owner on the premesis these such incidences would not occur. Thought we'd try the food at work with the girls I work with. We chose Morettes because I had a coupon as a reward from Citi card - Entertainment Book coupon & it is close to where I work.The waitress told me they were not accepting these till next year. Steak sandwich ok, Chicken sandwich was made with chicken lunch meat - disgusting -ended up throwing out most of it. It would have been better to keep the old Morette's closed. Just went to Morretts for the first time since they opened. The food was awesome. And the place looks great. Really put a lot of elbow grease into cleaning the place up painting redoing the seats, floors. They removed about a hundred years of grease. Way to go Martin family . Well, the steak sandwiches are pretty good, even if they aren't "real steak". The problem I had was the rude Owner, or Supervisor. After we got served by a very nice young lady, this older lady goes into a room that says "Employees Only" and smokes a cig and the whole back of the place stinks. Then some old guy comes in, apparently to sell a neon sign. The hag proceeds to tell him she will give him 20 bucks for it because it's broken. It wasn't. She said the black area was worn ( it was), and that it can't be fixed ( Yes, it can). She humiliated the guy, who was well in his 80's. I mean if it's a crappy sign WHY offer him 20 bucks ? I believe she was trying to take advantage. She did this "deal" right out in the open, and she treated the guy REALLY crappy. Here's the rub...Beer distributors GIVE these things to their good customers, so apparently they aren't good customers. In ANY case, the group I was with, we were ALL aghast at the way she treated this man. Zero dignity. So now, we have crossed Morettes off our list. Wonder if it was worth the loss in business ? I'll stay away from people who have no respect for the elderly. On the way out, I saw the gentleman, and told him it COULD be easily fixed, and told him the hag was trying to con him. This place has received quite the upgrade in the last couple of years. The steak sandwich is really good and much to my surprise the burgers are phenomenal. I don't smell like a ball of grease when I leave here like years past and the food doesn't taste like old fryer grease. Stop in and ask for the home made bbq/hot sauce too.
