Western Diner Chicken Salad (very tasty), steak fries, Cole slaw
    Christian L.

Alright. Tasty food. When I ate here, I got the $10 special of Chicken sandwich, steak fries, soup and refilled coffee cup. Until a month ago I had no notion that this diner - Western Diner - even existed in Guilderland, NY. Most travelers just bypass this road and thereby also this diner. It has lots of parking. It has lots of tables - no lines or waits and the food: the food is very affordable! Take your pick to sit at a well-laid out counter, with separate menus and silverware wrapped and already set up, or sit at older wood tables with a group. This diner is steeped in nostalgia. Not nostalgia from - let us say - Kansas, or Arizona, or Alabama where some other reviewers have hailed from, but the genuine, local, Upstate New York decades-old smoke, billiards, card playing or pinball machine enjoying small-town diner. This diner must have changed a bit over decades. Its almost 60 years old! That being said, don't come here from Kansas hoping to get a Kansan diner with a waitress with a sunflower in her hair. This is the backwoods Forrests of Upstate New York. This is mob country. It's patrons who are 30 year regulars land. This is eat and dash street. It's bombastic Yankee territory. The food was delicious! It was fresh and had that 'Mom's home cooked style' flavor that you get from a family member or Grandma's-kitchen-prepared. On my way out I spotted a local who was salivating over a deep plate of quesadillas with plenty of shredded and melted cheese. Next time I will try that - it looked really solid and plated nicely. The waitresses seemed to dote a little too much on long-time patrons and I did feel under appreciated, when I tried to get more coffee. Review: 5 star diner

A good, honest breakfast for a reasonable price. Service is prompt and friendly. Typical diner atmosphere.

I've been coming to 76 Diner for years, going back to my college days, and while I don't get over to that part of Latham as often anymore, I still make it a point to stop in a few times each year. I will say a while ago they changed their menus. I used to enjoy the older version with some information about the presidents of the United States. Probably silly of me but I enjoyed reading that and it went along with the '76 name. I'd like to see something similar to that come back on future menus. It's a large place, so there's rarely much of a wait, if any, and the parking lot is big enough that finding a spot is never an issue. On this visit, we were seated quickly, greeted promptly, and our food came out in a reasonable amount of time. Any time I've been here it's always nice and clean. This time was no exception. Any time I've been in the restroom, it has always been clean as well. The service stood out, our waitress checked in several times to make sure everything was good and see if we needed anything else without being overbearing. Everything we ordered tasted great, and the desserts were just as good. This has been a reliable spot for me for a long time, and this visit was no different. 5 stars

Inside is actually larger than expected, with a certain mid-century charm. Service was quick and unobtrusive. I had never actually eaten here until a recent weekend when I met a friend for breakfast. The menu is positively huge, and it was hard to narrow down my choice, but I went with the western omelette, which comes with potatoes and toast. I wish I could've switched the toast to an English muffin, and the potatoes were really not that flavorful and kind of dry. I would have preferred hashbrowns. I only ate half the omelette. It was kind of dry; no cheese, just ham, peppers, and onions. Am I glad I ate here? I guess so. But will I eat here again? Probably not.

As I waited for the hostess she was clearly overwhelmed and couldn't eek out a smile to any of the people she greeted. In the lively restaurant, a few tables of girls-night out, birthday dinners, couples both young & old, bar seating with the World Cup on TV. Our server was very pleasant. The food was good, by Albany standards, heavy on the butter, salt and cream. It wasn't bad but for me they could pull back on the richness and let the herbs/mushrooms/fish/etc shine through. 2 out of the 3 us intentionally only ate half our portions, planning to eat the rest "tomorrow" and told the server we wanted to box them togo. She offered to do that for us, while we were happily chatting, sipping the rest of our wine. When the boxes didn't reappear, the server apologized that someone threw the boxes away. It was disappointing, especially when we paid $25-28 dollars for our plates of pasta. Based on the overworked hostess and server, management needs to adjust their staffing to insure a better customer experience. When they toss out leftovers, not just a single bite, but huge plate of food, it would seem appropriate to provide a "peace offering" perhaps put a small dessert togo or certificate for a free appetizer on a future visit. If I was local I'd probably return.
