This little gem was recommended to me by my Bed and Breakfast host. He ensured that this would be a great place to pop in and have a good meal and he did not steer me wrong. As I arrived to this small and intimate restaurant I could see that it was completely packed. Wishing on a prayer there would be room, the hostess asked if I'd like to sit at the bar. I said yes right away and was swept there. The only seat open was at the end of the bar, but you are in the middle of the restaurant and the kitchen so it's a perfect spot to be able to see everything. After some time glancing at the menu I decided that the steak frittes and cab wine would be my order. As I waited I saw other items that immediately caught my eye and the burger was one of them. Mental note to come back and order that. When my meal arrived it was a generous portion and delicious. I enjoyed every minute of eating slowly, people watching and enjoying the ambiance of this place. It's reminiscent of a SF or NY hidden gem place but with a relaxed feel. Everything was great. I stopped by for a quick breakfast. This farm to table restaurant has a nice intimate interior. We opted to sit outside (which meant we had to fight off some bees). The drinks were pleasant! I had a coffee and tried a mimosa. To eat, I ordered a peach pancake which looked delicious! It had a maple syrup drizzle and a dollop of whipped cream which brought it together beautifully. It's a cute place with good ambiance if you like a darker restaurant at night. The issue is the lack of seasoning and the pretentious lack of much needed salt and pepper on the table. I had the smashburger and I usually like that style of burger, but this one was so over-cooked the edges of the burger were crunchy hard. The burger was not seasoned. The special sauce tasted like plain mayo and needed salt and flavor. The fries were good, but needed a little salt. My husband had an eggplant and pasta dish. This restaurant is everything I don't really like, but I still had a good time. We arrived after making reservations the day of on a Saturday evening at 7:45PM. It was darkly lit inside (with pinkish/red lights no less); it was extremely loud to the point that I had trouble understanding what my wife was saying (which might not be the background music!); and the prices were expensive. The entire night they played 1980s New-wave British music which I don't mind, but had it been something I detest I would have lost my mind. We were seated at a tiny table with a small candle which provided some actual heat on the cold winter night. Our server was extremely helpful and though he didn't have all the answers he did offer to go and find out. They have a long menu but it doesn't have a lot of food options on it, with most of the pages devoted to alcohol. They had only one dessert option when we were there. My wife and I both ordered the Hanger Steak with fries, mushroom sauce, and green salad (about $40 each). Hanger steak is my favorite cut and hard to find so I jumped on it. Food came out in about 25 minutes, which is amazing considering how small their kitchen is. The steak was cooked perfectly (they didn't ask how we wanted it), smothered in a lovely mushroom sauce, and covered an ample portion of crispy homemade fries which were so good I would have thought them bagged frozen items. Even the basic salad which was just various types of lettuce was great. They aren't cheap, but they are focusing on "farm to table" and that means quality food at commensurate (fair?) prices. Burgers and chicken sandwiches are $15, so if you want something lighter but still tasty you can go that route. Speaking of light, if you go into the bathroom on the right you will find a cold, dark, tiny room lit solely by a PINK bulb. It feels like being on a spaceship (as if I know what that is like), and after when you leave seeing the main light in the restaurant is very jarring. It was a fun experience but not inexpensive and not one that checks the boxes that I look for in a restaurant. Dark, loud, and cramped might be hip for the young or "save the earth" crowd, but I am too old to give up creature comforts for such things. I've only been to Nighthawks twice, but both times were memorable. The first time we went for dinner, vibes were great, food was amazing, and cocktails were delish. Recently, we went for brunch, and both my boyfriend and I had the spicy braised beef cheek with cheese grits, pickled peppers, crispy onions, and basil pesto. My boyfriend literally said, "It's probably one of the best meals I've had in a long time." The flavor combination in this dish was incredible--everything complemented each other perfectly. They have a standard menu that is always available as well as a rotating menu with lots of creative delicious options with a focus on farm to table that I hope to be back to try! Our first time here. Two of us drove in from Syracuse, and two others came from New Hampshire. We were looking for vegan, and for the most part, Nighthawks succeeded. We started off with a Common Roots Good Fortune IPA, a Sixpoint Brooklyn Sunny Lager, and Irish Coffee and a kombucha. The beers were fresh and tasty, the Irish Coffee was served in a coffee cup with no whipped cream (very odd), and our server came back to tell us that they were out of kombucha. So, that was exchanged for a bottle of Saratoga Water. For our meal, we ordered the Fried Green Tomato plate, 2 veggie burgers, a salad of the day, and two vegetables of the day. Sides were a salad and fries. One of us ordered a bowl of the corn chowder, but instead got the Pork Belly plate which was served on top of the chowder. No spoon was included with the meal. We ended up taking the pork belly home for later. Also, the salad of the day arrived with dressing on it, even though we had requested it on the side, so that had to be returned. Everything tasted great, especially the Green Tomato plate, the chowder and the vegetables of the day. I love this restaurant. I have never had a bad experience at Nighthawks and I've been dining here for years. I've been here with large parties (8ppl) down to just me by myself. Wait staff is always friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Cocktails are always interesting (I try a different special cocktail every time I go) and the food is to die for. Their burgers are what they're known for, but the daily specials are always things that you've probably never heard of. I've looked up things on my phone before I realized that all the waitstaff is well versed in exactly what every thing is on the menu. To begin, the cheeseburger was topped with pickles, bacon, house made American cheese, and special sauce on a pretzel bun. Knowing that, the burger was good, but not great. To elaborate, the meat was incredibly flavorful and juicy, but I did not like the cheese at all. The cheese was runny and had a weird taste that I did not like. On the flip side, the special sauce was delicious. It was sweet and tangy with excellent flavor. In addition, the pretzel bun was fresh, but a bit soggy on the bottom from the runny cheese. To put into perspective, the burger was good, but I will definitely skip the cheese next time. Next, I tried the fries which were definitely house made as well. I don't think it's possible to overstate the experience of dinning at nighthawks. A small intimate dinning room and a chalk board menus that comes down to be noted when menu items are depleted. The staff are attentive and clearly proud of the accomplishments of the chef. When asked, they offer thoughtful recommendations and reviews of the menu. My daughter is a student at rpi and though we live in Los Angeles nighthawks is easily a top 5 restaurant experience. The cocktails are layered and complex. Tequila and ginger?! Why yes, plus adding other flavors elevating a humble drink into a thoughtful experience. On to the food. I struggle to put into words the meal, but it is clear that the chef is thoughtful, intelligent, and highly gifted. Dessert was on par with the entire experience. Nighthawks is a gem and though we are sad our daughter is so far from home for school, we are so happy to be able to visit this extraordinary restaurant. There is so much thought and effort that goes into sourcing locally and house-making ingredients -- they smoke, pickle, brine, and bake so many things in that small open kitchen you begin to wonder if it's magic. With the menu changing weekly (burgers and fries are a mainstay) a visit to Nighthawks is always an adventure. Vegetarian and vegan options are a plenty, and are just as complex and exciting as the meat dishes. Cocktails also seem to get the same level of attention to detail. Cool little spot in Albany that we just happened upon. Had the carrot soup and it hit the spot. Almost everyone else in my party had the chicken sandwich, overall they enjoyed it. Someone didn't like the spice level and thought it was too hot, which they weren't expecting. I also ordered a fried chicken sandwich and my wife went with a strawberry mimosa. The cinnamon bun was amazeballs. It was made fresh and was served warm. The ginger glaze really complemented the cinnamon sugar and added to the bun's rich taste. I've got a sweet tooth and this satisfied my cravings for something sweet. Now let's talk about that bacon corn muffin. Just like the cinnamon bun, it was made fresh and arrived to our table warm. The chunks of smoked bacon inside the muffin tasted incredible and made me long for some grilled meat at a BBQ on a summer night. And the jalapeño honey butter is a game-changer. I've never tried something like that before and can't wait to try it again. The fried chicken sandwich rounded out our brunch. From what I've heard, Nighthawks is well-known for their burgers and chicken sandwiches. After our brunch, I see why. This wasn't some store-bought, frozen chicken breast that was deep-fried and thrown between two buns. The sandwich consisted of a braised, then fried chicken thigh.
