We've heard a lot of hype about this place and decided to stop in for a quick bite. We ordered a cinnamon bun and cornbread muffin to share. I also ordered a fried chicken sandwich and my wife went with a strawberry mimosa. The cinnamon bun was amazeballs. It was made fresh and was served warm. The ginger glaze really complemented the cinnamon sugar and added to the bun's rich taste. I've got a sweet tooth and this satisfied my cravings for something sweet. Now let's talk about that bacon corn muffin. Just like the cinnamon bun, it was made fresh and arrived to our table warm. The chunks of smoked bacon inside the muffin tasted incredible and made me long for some grilled meat at a BBQ on a summer night. And the jalapeño honey butter is a game-changer. I've never tried something like that before and can't wait to try it again. The fried chicken sandwich rounded out our brunch. From what I've heard, Nighthawks is well-known for their burgers and chicken sandwiches. After our brunch, I see why. This wasn't some store-bought, frozen chicken breast that was deep-fried and thrown between two buns. The sandwich consisted of a braised, then fried chicken thigh. Chill atmosphere, great food, friendly service, and opened late! All great news for us on a road trip that started hours behind schedule. We weren't too hungry, so we split olives and almonds (always a great combo), a cheeseburger, and a vegetable side. The food arrived quickly, and our bartender/server (Amanda) was knowledgeable and a true joy. But now for the food. I appreciated the use of marcona almonds, the snap was perfect with the tender but meaty olives. Burger-wise, the quality of the beef really came through, and I appreciated the crisp bun bottoms (ahem). We requested ketchup and hot sauce, and the hot sauces (green and red) were actually hot! Mixed them all together, delightful. The vegetable side of the day was kale with turnips, beet greens, and aioli. Very fresh, so good, easily 10/10 with a little extra salt. Very small, but interesting place. I ordered the hamburger with a homemade bacon, and my Voluptuous riding buddy ordered a chicken sandwich. All the ingredients were high-quality and fresh way beyond what you would get out of normal Restaurant. I really enjoyed The homemade pickles that came with both sandwiches. We got a fantastic meal here late on a Thursday. We had a view of the kitchen from where we were seated at the bar. The from-scratch cooking looked so good that it had two vegetarians salivating over ham hocks. First time trying a Yelp & Insta-local fave and I was underwhelmed. We kept it simple, or so we thought, opting for burgers & fries, grabbing togo and eating down by the waterfront a couple blocks away. The "special" came to $40 and wasn't special, at all. I opted for the veggie burger, it was inedible. Loose consistency, the combination of special sauce & patty turned the bun into a soggy wet sludge. I tried the individual components, just to try to get a decent meal out of it.. but it was just terrible. My companion's cheeseburger was "nothing special" and both were accompanied by fries that were so overcooked, for a moment we thought maybe we had ordered sweet potato fries. Both of us were looking for a good burger on a late Saturday afternoon. We figured that arriving at Nighthawks at 4 pm we would avoid any crowd or rush. We were right! There were only a couple other tables with customers. A chalked sign on the side of the entrance said that brunch ended at 4 pm, even though their webpage said it ended at 3 pm. But as I already said, we were looking for burgers. Our server explained that only the burger menu was currently available because the dinner menu did not start until 5 pm. Once again, no problem. As usual, my wife has an astounding ability to order something on a menu that is no longer available. She did it once again by choosing a Chatham Chocolate Peanut Butter Imperial Porter. It had been replaced by the Zero Gravity Extra Stout, which I decided to order, so she went with an Empire Kriek Berliner Weisse ($6 each). The Berliner Weisse had that typical part sour and part sweetness taste, but seemed more like a cider with not much flavor. While my wife said her taste of my stout offered some chocolate flavor, I thought my ZG Extra Stout was a bit weak on flavor and lacked robustness. The burger menu is reasonably simple to order from. There is either a beef burger ($10) or a veggie burger ($9). Both are served with a house sauce, house made pickle, and shredded lettuce unless declined. Add cheese for 50 cents, fried egg $2, house bacon $3, caramelized onion $1. The veggie burger can even be ordered vegan. Both of us were curious what the veggie burger would be like because occasionally we've come across some excellent preparations. The one at Nighthawks is made with local beans, grains and mushrooms. My wife ordered hers with cheese, the standard sauce, pickle and lettuce, and a side of Fries ($2.50). I opted for the locally grass fed beef variety with cheese, bacon, onion and all the standard toppings and a side of Fries also. I did find it interesting that I was not asked how I wanted the beef cooked. It came out medium-well, but it was obviously a loosely hand-packed patty that had good flavor, and more than sufficient moisture from the sauce, the onions and the cheese. In fact this was such a messy burger to eat that I found myself using a fork and knife to cut off the portions of the patty that extended beyond the edges of the bun. BTW, the sesame topped bun was very fresh and had a nice egg color. I also don't want to overlook mentioning how good the bacon was. My wife's veggie burger may not have been up there with the best that we've enjoyed elsewhere, but she still found it flavorful, although not served hot enough. I thought there was a too predominant flavor of refried beans. Her burger was just as messy to eat as mine as the patty lacked some cohesiveness and may have had more special sauce applied than mine. The weakest component of our meals was actually the Fries. For the first couple of minutes while they were hot they were super crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. However, as they cooled they became so hard on the outside that a fork would not pierce them. They actually looked like they were reheated leftovers. They averaged about 1 1/2 inches in length with none longer than 2 inches. The dinner menu, which is offered Wednesday through Sunday looked truly interesting. We definitely want to return for that. They try too hard. I was so excited for this restaurant being a pretty big foodie. The brunch was decent, but going for dinner was a different story. They never have good beer for my boyfriend, ever. Not on tap or canned or anything. The menu is not very descriptive at all and everything is not executed correctly. The chicken thigh had batter uncooked, the veggies aren't cut right on the salads, the burger that "you need to have" was sub par and all you could taste was the "house sauce" you name it. Sometimes two people are just on the same wavelength. I feel that way about Josh Coletto, and I was thrilled to hear that he was opening a restaurant in Troy where he could really do his thing. We first met when he came back to town and was cranking out beautiful fried chicken and biscuits at The Flying Chicken. Then for years I went to just about every Rock N Roll Brunch at The Low Beat that I could squeeze into my schedule. But those were only once a month. Although I still have fond memories of that pozole with duck egg and the breakfast poutine with crispy beef tongue. Now, Josh is in this corner bistro, and he has assembled a team that shares his vision. It's local, seasonal, and sustainable. But not only that, it's also accessible. Because while the dinner menu does have some pricier options, there is always a basic burger. Do I love everything there? Nope. And that's okay. So far, I've only been twice for lunch, and I still need to return for dinner. But here's what I've learned so far. The cheeseburger is great. Nighthawks makes their own American cheese, and if you're one of those people who is snobbish about American cheese, I'll fight you. This isn't the stuff you hate. This is what the stuff you hate aspires to be. Get over it. There is also a house-made veggie burger, made from NY State ingredients like mushrooms and beans. It's delicious, but I'm going to stick with the beef based cheeseburgers. Burgers are served on their own. The fries are good, but I was kicking myself for not getting the seasonal vegetable side. On my first visit, the roasted radishes with green sauce were my favorite part of the meal. So simple. So seasonal. So good. That said, my dining companion preferred the special salad of the day, which was loaded with interesting seasonal ingredients. Although, for my taste, I found the salad to be a bit over dressed. However, I'm keenly aware I hold the minority opinion on the volume of salad dressing required for a delicious plate of seasonal greens. Right. So you can spend a lot of money, or you can spend a reasonable amount of money. It all depends on what you want to do. But the place itself is darling. It's small. You can sit at a counter and look into the kitchen. You can sit at a table by one of the large windows and watch Troy go by. Some people even get their food to go. But that's crazy talk. You should go for lunch. Get a feel for the place. Have a burger. Maybe a beer. But definitely try the veggie side of the day. And if you like it, you should come back for dinner. That's my plan. Or you could skip the burger and just go straight for brunch. I've looked at some of those menus, and they bring back memories. I know there are some people who have requested Josh's fried chicken. We'll have to see how it develops. But in the end, I think this place is really what a restaurant should be. And really, I wish more places would follow suit. Maybe if it's wildly successful, this will be the start of a new phase for Capital Region dining. Fingers crossed. read more

I hate to be the contrarian to the first three reviews and the food was certainly fresh and housemade, but I found the flavor at Nighthawks a bit plain and underwhelming. I tried the veggie burger, beef burger, and fries. The cheese on the burgers was the definite exception and highlight for me, simply delicious! Everything else tasted like food you could just as easily have made at home. That is fine, if you're dining on the cheap, but $40 for two burgers and fries isn't exactly economical for what seemed like sit-down Five Guys. Perhaps the entrees, some of which sounded pretty interesting and inventive, are the way to go. Portions, however, looked a bit skimpy from peeking at other tables. Dinner is served from Wednesday-Sunday, 5 to 10pm. We were craving burgers. The cheese is a house made American and burgers come with lettuce, pickles and a special sauce. No tomatoes. I'm assuming it's because they aren't in season yet. The sauce was similar in color to Big Mac sauce and I'm sure some ingredients overlap: tomato paste, mayo, possibly capers or something else a bit briny. However, this version taste better. My partner got a burger with bacon. It was cut thick and he thought it tasted great. I added onions to mine and they were caramelized. The patty was on the thinner side (but not as thin as a patty from Five Guys). It was juicy and flavorful. It definitely satisfied the craving. The fries were salted well and came out hot and crispy. Based on the burgers, we will back to try more at Nighthawks. Once that happens, I will update this review. Happy to say they have a pretty good size bar for a small place. Now, I say a small place for Troy although if I close my eyes I can picture this place in Brooklyn. Truly like the atmosphere, makes me miss my city training trips. Sat at the bar as I came by myself. Wasn't too busy when I walked in, then boom place got packed on a Thursday around 630. Ordered a Left Hand Milk stout can. They have 5 beers and 1 cider on tap. All were craft or local beers. For dinner I ordered a burger which looks like they are known for. They have local sustained meat and veggie burgers as well as a pretty large different menu. Like to try a lot of it. Side salad to complete my order. Food was quick and the burger was very juicy. Much different than I was expecting since I have visited another local place where the burgers have been not as good lately. Side salad was well done too. Next time the fries and something different from the menu although I'm already thinking about another burger. I always end my reviews with "Would I come back?" Hmmm, well hell yes I'll be back. I keep delaying writing this review until I've tried dinner here, and I keep not making it to dinner. At this point it's starting to feel silly, so I'll just say this: Nighthawks has the best brunch I've tried in the Cap district, and it isn't even particularly close. The food here is very, very good. The level of attention paid to fresh/local/housemade borders on ridiculous: my friend ordered a bagel with smoked trout and got a whole, house-smoked trout served with a bagel they'd made in house as well. That could be just a kind of performative thing, but the results of all of that loving foraging and pickling and smoking and brining are pretty uniformly delicious. I've never had a bad order here. The service has always also been prompt and helpful, and the ambience is perfectly fine (casual and fairly comfy, with close-together tables and mismatched mugs), but the food here is the real star. I'm excited to update this when I finally try that dinner menu, but I'm pretty confident that I won't be disappointed. read more

Nighthawks is a great little restaurant serving a variety of brunch options, as well as a smaller dinner menu with burgers. While their dinner menu looked amazing, I chose to order their cheeseburger - and, wow, I'm glad I did. It was one of the best cheeseburgers I've had in a really long time. Perfectly cooked, perfectly melted cheese with good pickles. The side of fries were also really good and crispy. The staff was extremely nice both at the restaurant and on the phone when we called to make a reservation for that night. They also had a medium sized beer list which was really well curated, which I love to see. It's a small place so I definitely recommend calling to make a reservation. There were seats at the bar that remained open so you're probably okay to walk in and sit there, but if you want a table a reservation is the way to go. I'm excited to go back whether it's for dinner again or to try their brunch menu! read more

I visited this place a few nights ago for a late night dinner with my partner. Came into the restaurant and it seemed quite lively. Food smelled amazing. Overall restaurant was very smoky upon arrival though. The smoke burned the eyes and was stuck in clothes after leaving. Servers weren't very attentive to begin. The server probably came to the table to once and that was for the full order. Drinks were pretty decent, which I'll give a star for. The crispy spring onion was greasy and nearly inedible and the food took about 45 minutes to come out, for a couple of simple sandwiches. When the food came out the order was wrong and the burger was over cooked. Overall super disappointed and wouldn't recommend. Lots of other food options in the area. read more

I am not sure. i was SO excited to have the best burger in the area. maybe my expectations were too high. the place was cute and i started with a beer while i waited for my friend to arrive. she had also heard great things. beer selection is small but decent. we had the burgers, which was the only thing on the menu. dinner starts wednesday. but, we came for the burgers. we started with a special, salmon croquettes. they were good, served with a truffle aioli. spicy, soft inside, not much taste of salmon though. we each got the normal cheese burger with all the fixings and shared a large fry. the burger looked good, but the bun was not holding up. when the bun started to give away, the burger also fell apart. my friend began using a fork and knife. although it fell apart i kept going at it trying to get a great flavor, i couldn't really find that either. it was good - just not great like other reviews which led me to be disappointed. the fries were good. fresh, just not too crispy. i had one here or there that was under done, although they were very brown. we each had 2 beer, shared the special ($10), shared fries, and each had a burger and our bill was $64. very pricy. i am happy i stopped into to try it though, i just get the hype. read more

I've been putting off going to Nighthawks. Not because I didn't think it would be good, but because I was afraid it would be SO good that I'd eat there far too often. Well, a friend suggested we go out to a local burger place tonight, and I figured now was as good a time as any to try it. The menu is simple: you have a hamburger, a cheeseburger, and a veggie burger, with a list of toppings you can add. Wednesday-Sunday, they have an extended dinner menu with a few specials. Fries, a simple salad, and a vegetable of the day are the only side options. The draft list is seasonal and there is a selection of local beers. The food takes a while to arrive (it is all cooked fresh), but when it arrives, man, it's heaven on a plate. Juicy burger, crisp lettuce, and tangy house-made pickles on a lightly-toasted bun. The fries were cooked perfectly. The eating experience is all a blur; I only remember shoving food in my mouth as fast as I could swallow. Even better, just about everything on my plate was grown at local farms. Is $10 for a burger (plus more for sides) expensive? Yes. Is it worth it? YES. I have NEVER had a better burger and, as much as I hate to admit, this will likely become a frequent dinner stop for me. read more
