What a gem in Troy! Dark, warm, cozy, lively spot. Perfect ambiance for a night with family and friends or a great couples date night. To find a speakeasy with a full food menu is unusual. We arrived slightly after it opened and it was already toasty warm with music playing and we were greeted right away. You can sit wherever you want at the little tables or on the couches. Food was great, drinks were even better and the service was friendly and prompt. The music volume was perfect for talking without shouting. After we ate we took our drinks to the couches and the waitress brought over games without us even realizing there were games. We came here for drinks after dinner downstairs at Emry's Garden. They do not take reservations but there was plenty of space indoors. The vibes resemble a den/ men's cave. Lots of paintings, mirrors, red velvet, arm chairs. The drinks menu is limited but the bartender can make anything. We got a variety of drinks, they were all good. The first thing that stood out was the STEEP staircase to get in.....,then you walk into the space. Don't get me wrong, it's BEAUTIFUL...however......how do they accommodate those with handicaps? I HOPE (but didn't see) that there is an elevator or SOMETHING??? We were there for a drag/burlesque show and unfortunately the bartender just couldn't keep up with the crowd. We've gone to The Berlin several times now, starting with NYE in 2023 and 2024. We love the specialty cocktails, atmosphere and decor. Simply put, the place is cool. We've recently become aware that The Berlin has a weekly Wednesday dinner event called German night. I have a strong German background and I'm quite fond of and familiar with German cooking. In the two times we've eaten here we've had each of four entrees and each one was authentic and absolutely delicious. Every item on the plate was such a treat for me as I haven't had such good German food in quite some time. My grandmother was a professional German chef and I think she would have been very pleased to eat here. The rouladen was my favorite and the potato pancakes were some of the best I've ever had. The rating is not based on the internal experience since we never made it through the door. Two weeks ago I sent an email inquiring about their open status and make a reservation and I never heard back from them. I then just went ahead and booked via there text option and never received confirmation or any sort of acknowledgement. I showed up for the reservation and was then told the venue had been reserved for an event (perfectly fine and the gentlemen on the phone was very kind) but instead of being notified through my email, called or even texted back, I had to find out at the door. Based on this experience I won't put forth the effort again. read more

We were lucky to get a table on a Saturday night as walk-ins. Wait service was not available (which we had to figure out - no one told us), so we ordered at the bar bringing the drinks back to the table. Cocktails were fantastic. We had a great experience. Wow. I had such high hopes for this place, and was met with pure disappointment. First of all we showed up early at Bier Garten for a drink and asked if we could order food to be delivered upstairs, and were told no. Then another worker came out and debunked that, so we had our cheeseburger delivered upstairs. The drinks, $15? Meh I've had better. Decor, nice. Service, ok. But the kicker.... We made a reservation, for 8 people.. and after 2 hours they KICKED US OUT. Yes, you read that right. They said they had a "birthday party" coming in at 10:30pm. BUZZ KILL. We're we not spending enough money? Who kicks someone out who's spending money?! I mean I've been a server and totally understand the need to make money, but if you're going to enforce a time limit, wouldn't it be appropriate to notify patrons in advance?! No misbehaving.. literally we were just told another party needed our spot. For the prices, and the consideration I'll take my money elsewhere. Elegant, yet comfy, atmospheric, yet accessible, the latest brainchild of the those that brought us Wolff's Biergarten, Bombers, and Olde English, the Capital District has a new spot for fancy cocktails. Decor is cool speakeasy/old school nightclub. You are led through the drapes and it's like you've stepped back in time to a stylish, intimately lit, cocktail lounge where you can imagine yourself living in a more civilized time where you can settle in to a funky, delightfully comfortable club chair and enjoy a smart cocktail. Or, maybe you imagine you flouting the rules and having a cool cocktail during Prohibition. Space is gorgeously designed with eclectic wall hangings and, yes, there is cool jazz and swing standards playing the background. There are bottled wine and beer options. And small, but solid list of wines by the glass. But, let's face it, we're here for the cocktails. Hubby had the Marlene Dietrich (Gin, fresh lemon, agave, prosecco) and I chose the Wolff's Whiskey Sour (whiskey, lemon juice, farm egg whites). Both of these were just perfect! But, our favorite of the night was the Lemongrass Martini (vodka, lemongrass, St. Germaine) which was an absolutely delightful cocktail. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly. This unique speakeasy in Downtown Troy is a spot too check out. While arriving too the Berlin, parking was easy and right across the street. The stairway up too the Host/Hostess stand was dimly lit with a very polite man too greet you. Giving a very relaxed atmosphere. Arriving too the table I noticed how dim it was , bumping my knee twice on who knows what, since it is extremely dark in there and only lit up by candle light. I don't recommend going after or before optical surgery. The music being played is a mix of different styled jazz which is pretty soothing and relaxing, volume could've been lowered a bit so you could hear the person right next to you though. Waitress was not available for most of the night, relying on grabbing her from the bar multiple times. The drinks were great and definitely recommended and I did appreciate how involve the owner was, definitely a plus. Therefore, the Berlin is a place to grab a drink and carry a light conversation, just be aware it is dark and prepare yourself because you need to be cautious with your surroundings. read more

I was in Troy for the week, and decided to give this place a try - since I had tried the other two businesses that were here before (I used to live in Troy). On Thursday I got a Margarita (meh) and a Gin Fizz (good!). I find this place expensive, but fun to try. On Friday I got more Gin Fizzes (good, but different than Thursday's - different bartenders each night). I was a little bummed that the drinks changed from one bartender to the next - not much consistency. Bartender Friday added heavy cream, so it was richer, where the bartender on Thursday added more acid (lemon), which in turn made the Empire Gin change to a purple color. Both drinkable, but something I think they should work on (consistency). I would give this place 4-stars based on the prices and inconsistencies, but the reason I am giving it 3-stars is because of the smell. Both nights I went they lit something to make one of their smoky cocktails. I sat in the back of the bar on Thursday, and thought it was incense, which passed within 5-minutes but did give me a headache. On Friday I sat right by the bar and it was hell. I was so nauseous I had to leave. RESTAURANTS NEED TO REALIZE PEOPLE HAVE SCENT SENSITIVITIES. IF YOU DO, DO NOT GO HERE! For this reason I would not go back, because I can not guarantee that no one else in the bar would order that drink; and since it gave me a headache and made me sick to my stomach both nights I went I do not want to risk it. If you want an adult night out with a speak easy feel, definitely the place to go to. Staff is very attentive and Matt is very hands on and right there with the staff helping out. Very nice touch him being right there to welcome you too. I would suggest getting paper towels for the bathrooms and small plates for the snacks. This was our first time at your Berlin Lounge establishment. When entering we were presently surprised by the service at the front door, only to find out we would be very disappointed at the end of our visit. The gentleman at the door asked us if he could check our coats for us. This was a great offer since all of us were wearing heavy winter coats. When we went to leave, no one was at the door to get our coats. There was a heavy kitchen smell, like the smell of a fryer. My husband looked around only to find our coats were being stored in the kitchen, very close to a fryer. My coat had food crumbs all over it, and all our coats smell like cooking oil now. When the gentleman at the front door appeared, all he had to say about the situation was "that room is for employees only" ... I understand that the kitchen is for employees only, but also probably because he didn't want anyone to see how exactly the establishment is storing guests' coats. For an establishment that presents itself as sophisticated and higher class then a typical bar, we were outraged. This is not the kind of place I thought we would have to have all our coats dry cleaned after, and frankly I am embarrassed I even brought my out of town friends to this place. Sadly, this situation ruined our experience there and we will not be going back, nor will we recommend this place to any of our friends. read more
