So. I am old, and don't get out to bars all that often. My bar for bars probably isn't the highest. Here is what Susie's is (and I hope Susie would agree): a great neighborhood bar. Maybe bars need to be defined by what they are not. It's not a college bar. It's not a sports bar. It's not a dive bar. It's not a see and be seen bar. It's not a new fangled fancy cocktail bar. It's not even a retro revive-the-classic-cocktail bar. There is no food at this bar. But it does have a great cross section of people. Susie herself is a powerhouse, with the bar and the restaurant to tend. And she shakes your hand like she means it. I get the feeling that one would not want to make her cross. And tonight, at Tuesday trivia, I saw the most fantastic showdown of rock, paper, scissors... EVER. It would be nice if they had Drambuie. It goes so well with Scotch on a cold blustery day. But there is a warmth about Susie's even without it. Something like family. Maybe more specifically, the part of your family that you like. read more

Fantastic little bar, hidden right off Delaware Ave & Madison. The bar has a very cozy and warm feeling to it. It's the perfect place to swing by for a couple cocktails after work with friends. There's a fantastic patio area hidden in back, the crowd is friendly, and Suzie who owns and operates the bar is an absolute sweetheart. Suzie also won "Albany's Best Bartender" in 2006 via Metroland's Readers Picks. They have a Happy Hour from 6PM to 9PM with $3 and $4 Pints of 16 different beers on tap and they do a Trivia night on Tuesdays at 9PM. read more

When it comes to going to bars, this is where I usually end up at the end of the night. It's a dive bar, and my favorite one at that. All of the bartenders are excellent and have been there for years. It's a small spot, but there is usually a lot of room until after 11pm. The patio is a great place to hang out after work in the summer. They usually get a mix of craft and mainstream beers as well as common liquors for mixed drinks. This is again one of my favorite spots, and maybe out of my own nostalgia, hope never changes. read more

Susie's gets 5 out of 5 starts for being just about as divey as a bar can get. If you're expecting to go here and have a weird AF time, you will not be disappointed. This place is a staple. An Albany institution. The same friendly, albeit occasionally grumpy bartenders have been working here for years. And that's really the charm of this place. The last time I went here I was hammered (duh) and I went into the men's bathroom to pee. I didn't lock the door and some guy came in and used the urinal next to me. And we were both real chill about it. I've also sexually harassed some strangers here before, and for that I am truly sorry. But I just want you all to know what you're getting into here. For a place which is as relatively small as Susie's, it still feels like you've got 3 decent options: the front area, which is more spacious, the back area, which is closer to the bar and has some arcade-type stuff, and the outdoor patio out back. That's actually the most accommodating area, but I couldn't spent a lot of time back there on this particular night because of a heavier dose of cigarette smoke. Inside was more than adequate. They have plenty of good choices for drinks too. I have to agree with others who say it's a fine place for a small group to go for drinks. read more

If you want to take over a bar with a mere 1/2 dozen of your friends, this is the place to go. There are usually not many people in there, which is good. The place is not large. One little sitting area, then bar space and seats against the wall. That's basically it. There is a deck out back, but it totally lacks a Susie's feel to it. You know, because sunlight exists outside. I guess I didn't yet mention that the place is in a basement. When it gets even slightly crowded, a bartender will collect empty glasses rather frequently. (I assume that's because they have a limited supply of glasses. How cool is that? A bar with a glassware supply sufficient to handle only an intimate crowd. If it gets too popular, people don't get drinks. Ok, that's purely a fantasy I created in my head. Could be true though.) The prices aren't bad and Cafe 217 is in one direction while Dino's Pizza is in the other. What about food at Susie's? Well, um. I really, uh, don't even know if they serve any. I've only gone there to drink. With the other two places so close on either side of Susie's, I didn't even think to eat there. Well, I wouldn't really want to eat there either. But back to the drinks. The bartenders tend to be cool and you can get the person's attention because there are usually so few people in the place. Yes, I really am saying that a nearly empty bar is my preferred bar in Albany. It lacks college student bozos and attracts a more punk crowd. Punk might be too intense of a word. People who might chill in black attire and adorn themselves with body art. That's better. If you're sitting right under a speaker, I hope your friends with similar musical taste are the ones messing with the jukebox. If not, you might have to endure an extremely loud set of songs you're not into. Parking can be an issue. I don't really have a good solution for that. What amazes me about Susie's is, when I suggest it for happy hour, I get "But it's too EARLY to go to Susie's!" However, it reminds me of my college days in Oswego, when we would go to happy hour at "The Shed" from 4-6, then down to "The Raven" from 6-9. This is what the grad school crew would do with Susie's - Lionheart first, then across the way. This in itself makes the happy hour filled with familiar faces - which, really, is what I love most about my favorite Lark/Madison haunts. They have a great back patio as well, which also cannot be enjoyed by the after 1am crowd. read more

This is probably the bar I go to most, even though I never like the way they mix my vodka-cran with lime. It's a good place to go when you just want a few drinks with friends. It's cheap and the juke box has a great selection. Most weekend nights, it's not as excessively crowded as all of the other bars, which is a good thing. And the sparkly red floor really is cool. More importantly, they have my favorite video touch-screen game - the one my friends in college lovingly nicknamed "naked lady photo hunt." read more

Susie's is all right in my book. At 11, we peeked in and were alarmed to find the bar deserted. But to our relief, everyone was just hanging out in the nice little yard out back. It's smaller than the one at Cafe Hollywood, but really cute and intimate. By the time we went inside later on in the night, the bar was entirely full of people. I liked that the crowd was kind of artsy and older. (I guess you could say this is as close to 'hipster' as you're going to get around here, but that's really not saying much.) Plus, less college kids. In the end, it's just like any other bar with lots of people drinking and having fun. But I liked that the atmosphere wasn't all sports, beer and brawn. read more

This is a decent pub overall. The drink selection is pretty good for a small place and there's plenty of room for a small group to hang out. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but it's a nice place to grab a drink if you're in the area. read more

This seems like a bar that would have ghosts and I like it. It has been claimed by many of the Albany hipsters, which can be annoying for some, but mostly amusing or entertaining for me. I only stayed for about a half hour and one beer, but I'm confused why all the extremely high ratings. The bartender was okay, the beer selection adequate, etc. Don't get me wrong, I have no complaints, I just didn't think it was anything special. The best no-frills bar in Albany. There's no theme, no kitsch, and no food - just good beers and good times. The brew selection is average in terms of sheer volume, but the 16 beers on tap are always well-selected. Patrons are generally laid-back and unpretentious and the jukebox has a decent music selection for one of the generic digital TouchTunes-style players. I'm usually on the homey, picket-fenced patio out back, but the couches in the front corner also offer a loungey alternative to the lively bar seating. I'm long since burned out on the typical Lark Street party bars. Thank you, Susie's, for offering a chill alternative just a few blocks from my Center Square home. read more

The bar staff are friendly and attentive and the back patio makes this my favorite drinking locale in the summers. For 4.5 stars before coming here I was anticipating above average experience. Went to happy hour and the drinks range was decent and reasonable in price. They have a bar area with limited tables, dart board but they also have a back patio that can host small-medium groups. They had a dj with a mac in the back, although I expected live music at the time, but not a deal breaker. Would not come out of my way as another poster mentioned. There's probably more going on if you walk into Lark towards Central/Washington Ave, although the scene around there is modest at best. Overall, ok dive bar, but check out other offerings closeby. read more

Susie's is certainly one of the best bars in Albany. For the nerds, it's got a few obscure beers and an arcade game. For everyone else, it's got an extensive jukebox and a simple, relaxing, fun feeling. It's a nice compact size that seems to discourage it from getting TOO rowdy and packed (unlike the Lionheart, for instance, which, for some reason, seems to encourage people to treat it like a sardine can) yet also manages to never feel claustrophobic. I imagine that a feng shui expert would like it. (Sure, they'd ruin it with colored envelopes taped to the ceiling and polished rocks on the floor, but they'd certainly admire its excellent use of small space.) It's divey in all the good ways, and respectable in all the good ways, too. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about this place! Low-key no frills bar in downtown Albany. The head bartender is a professional, makes great drinks, provides great conversation, and really knows his bar and his audience. The prices are right, the atmosphere is great, and they have an awesome juke box. I love coming in here when we visit. It's easily the best bar in the area. read more

suzie's is not on any local listing. i do not have the number. but i have been here a Number of times. it is where the Griffon used to be, a couple of places down from romeo's (pizza joint). Suzie is really a great girl. she used to tend bar at the old lionheart when it was where bombers is now. the bar is a smallish area but has a number of seats at the bar, a number (ok. i swear i am not hung up on the word number) of them along the wall behind it and a couch at the edge. she also has a very nice patio out back with plenty of tables and umbrellas for the rain. the crowd is usually very local and everyone knows everyone else (side story - many years ago i stopped in here when it was still the Griffon and a guy collapsed against the wall. i ran to him and called 911, it turns out he had a heart attack and no one noticed. he would have died. i left when the paramedics arrived. i hope he is still ok.) we go here every tuesday night for trivia and everyone has a great time. the prices are very reasonable and they even have the tv games. a nice place to go to relax. of course, you Will be accosted by the local bums if you venture outside or go the little store next door. i have been propositioned and threatened outside here. but i just shrug it off, it Is lark st extended afterall. i can think of a Number of reasons to come here.
