The place has a great, olde feel to it but the contrasting 70's American rock stripped that sensation away as I dined before a print of Churchill. (When I walked by the establishment in the evening, they played cheesy American pop.) Their online drink menu did not match their current menu. In lieu of a much desired vesper (I was told they couldn't make it because they no longer have Lillet), I went with their Indigo 75 of Empress Gin, lemon juice, and Prosecco. Instead of refreshing, the lemon juice overwhelmed the entire drink. The BLTEA with bacon, lettuce, tomato, egg, avocado, and mayo was wonderful. Can't believe it took me this long to check out the Olde English Pub! We came here for quick drinks and apps after an event and ended up staying a while! Our bartender Olivia was super nice and ended up chatting with us for a while too! The sausage rolls and dipping fries came highly recommended by her and we opted for the sausage rolls which definitely did not disappoint and were delicious! They have some good bar food options. Kitchen closes at 10pm but the bar is open until 11pm. We also got to try some of their beers and ciders before committing which was really nice as well. Frankly, I think this is a solid pub to visit! It's recommended on a lot of tourist websites, so I was a little hesitant, but in comparison to other bars and pubs, this is a good place. It's in a beautiful building, and the interior makes you feel like you're sitting in someplace historic. The staff are all friendly, and the ambience is very lively. I ordered some fish and chips, which were basic. It's nothing fancy, but alongside my beer, they fit well. I think this restaurant is suited for get-togethers, drinking nights, and having a good time. I wouldn't necessarily go here only for food but more for a good night out. read more

I can't believe that I'm yet to review the Olde English, the best place to get a giant tea cup of beer or cider (if that's still a thing) or a pickle back shot. The bar tenders have always been top notch, and the food has been excellent. The location is close enough to get to the water front, for a nice stroll to try to walk off some of that buzz. There is seating against the bar, as well as upstairs and downstairs dining rooms. I've always enjoyed the old country feel of the place. This time was better! I went per a recommendation for some hygge holiday decor and it served! Our waiter was great and the drinks were cute and tasty. My husband loved his BLTea which was huge! I got the soup of the day (black bean, chicken and corn soup) and dipping fries for my meal and I was full happy. The only thing I would say, is the menu choices could be better for me. I wanted a salad with a protein. Salad is $17 and to add, at the cheapest, chicken is $7 making for an expensive salad. We stopped in with a group of 12 to have some Din-din before the King and Country concert at the MVP Arena. First....drinks are great from beers to cocktails. Everyone enjoyed their drinks and I especially loved my "espresso martini ". I don't remember what it was called but it was good. Second....appetizers were also good but average. One thing tho, they have fries with multiple sauces. If you're a French fries lover like me then get that. Nice change from ketchup I got a really delicious burger. We were in such a rush I forgot the name but it was great. Hubs got the fish and chips. Not great. It was just greasy and bland. The waitstaff was great. Checked on our large party often which is nice. Also we were in the room upstairs and it's a cozy place. Anytime I am in the mood for fish and chips I head to this spot. They really get it right. The menu is small however the food I have tried has always been good, steak and frites, kedgeree and the pot pie. But the fish is best. I also like the ambiance of the place and with one exception the customer service is great. I had one bad experience with a waitress but she has since left. My husband and I like the beer choices and when I am in the mood for a mojito they have always been well made. Close parking can be difficult, if you have issues walking, but that is not the restaurant's fault. lastly they have a great outdoor space, it is really nice in the Springtime. read more

Came in before our tour of the USS Slater. We would not pass up having lunch in 300 year old building. We enjoyed our lunch very much! I got the French Onion soup with a side of potato salad. I also got the spiced apple margarita. It was the cheesiest , most flavorful French onion soups I've ever had. I eat a lot of French onion soup too. The croutons were so flavorful. And the bread that came with it was light and toasty. Just perfection. My husband got the bangers and hash. He said the sausage was flavorful. The hash was soft with a nice crisp. The gravy wasn't too heavy. He got the Boddington beer. He said it was flavorful and not too heavy. I'm so jealous we don't have this place in Boston. They need to fire the cook! Ruben was actually burnt (black) but cold inside. Truffle fires were cold and had no truffle essense, oil or smell of any kind. Plus pale and limp. Burger was supposed to have cheddar--did not have any cheese at all. It was overcooked on one side and mediumRARE on the other (ordered medium) bacon ($2 extra was underdone and limp and cold. came with $1 extra truffle fries--see above about the fries. The $23 "snacking platter" had less than an ounce of sliced deli meat and tiny cubes and I mean tiny of about 1 oz of cheese in total. 2 razor thin cuke slices and a couple of cornichicons. The fish with the fish and chips had a nice crunchy batter, the bacon butty on toast was properly executed. Not a light sandwich. This was the perfect place to be for lunch on a crisp, sunny autumn afternoon. I've been to this lovely historic building before, but I don't recall ever stopping in for a meal. Hats off to the fry cook. What a great fry job. As a foodie and sometime health nut, fried food isn't a regular part of my diet, but everything that jumped out at us from the menu was fried. Perhaps it's also part of the bar food culture. Anyway, Olde English is famous for its Fish & Chips, so my husband put in an order for that. There was also an appetizer called Chicken Tikka Croquettes. They were essentially chicken and potato meat balls seasoned with Marsala which we had to try. We shared the delicious meal and barely managed to finish it. The batter on the cod fish was different. It wasn't breaded. It was beer-battered. In fact, there was on so thick I felt as though I was eating fish encased in zeppoles. To me, that was a great thing. I love zeppoles, but it's been years since I've had them. I can tell you that the coleslaw was great, too. I'm fussy about slaw. I can also tell you that the slaw was so good that my husband was reluctant to share, but he did. The fries were wonderfully crispy and so were the croquettes. While I enjoyed the latter, I actually had more than I needed. I washed it all down with some Allagash White, which tasted great. We actually ate at the bar, because at first we weren't sure if we would stay for lunch, but we're glad we did. We look forward to coming back. Next time, I'd like some Bangers & Mash. Both our bartender and the server who assisted her were attentive, well informed and very welcoming. The drinks and food arrived quickly. The antique decor on both floors is beautiful. This place has a great ambiance, great service, and good food. There's a little bar in front, a dining room in the back, possibly some tables upstairs (not too sure about that), and a big outdoor space - which was closed as it was winter. We ordered fish and chips which was ok. The fish was good and cooked well but it had way too much breading. I should have known as I saw the table next to us had ordered it and the guy was picking through all the breading. I discussed this with a neighbor a couple of days later and she said she didn't have the same experience when she ordered it there on a previous occasion. Again, the service was great and we enjoyed the fire in the fireplace. The back dining room is small so if there is a loud table - which there was - it can be loud. Since Im pregnant I was happy to see they had a few mock tail options and I got the Rum Pum Pum. It was very enjoyable. I also got the french fries (again- pregnant). It was a large sharing portion. It came with dipping sauces everyone else raved about and while I found them decent I really just enjoyed eating the delicious french fries on their own. I also want to shout out the awesome bartender, I think her name is Kayla. We got the bar shortly before 4:30 PM on Tuesday. The night started off quiet and we were able to have some nice chats with her. Then as the night got progressively busier I saw her truly hustling still with a great attitude. The following review is strictly based on their 2019 Downtown Albany Restaurant Week menu, which was $25 for an appetizer, entree and dessert. For appetizers, we tried the scallops, which were pan seared and came with roasted Brussels sprouts and bacon in brown butter -- as well as the artichoke appetizer -- a baked artichoke stuffed with shallots, garlic, breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese. The scallops were very good and I loved the Brussels sprouts, which were cooked perfectly. The artichoke was difficult to eat and it felt like we were eating straight up breadcrumbs, because it was covered in them. For our entrees, we tried the red snapper, which came on a bed of creamed parsnips and heirloom cauliflower and wild mushrooms, and the lamb chops, which were topped in a balsamic glaze and came with fingerling potatoes and asparagus. When our entrees arrived we were taken aback by the small portions of red snapper and lamb. I understand the menu was $25, but restaurant week, in my opinion, is a restaurant's chance to impress a new customer and keep them coming back. Both the lamb and the red snapper were about half the size of your palm. The creamed parsnips that accompanied the red snapper tasted extremely floral and we're unappetizing as a result. We were left unimpressed and still hungry, so we ordered their signature fish and chips, which was absolutely huge. It tasted fresh, was perfectly cooked and the fries that came with it were thick and tasty. As for the dessert portion of our meal, we ordered the Banoffee Pie -- bananas, toffee and a crumbled digestive biscuit topped with whipped cream and chocolate chips -- and the Strawberry Shortcake Fudge -- strawberries, marshmallow cream and vanilla wafers within a white chocolate fudge. Both were excellent! If you like bananas, you'll love the Banoffee Pie. The fudge looked like cheesecake, but had the texture of fudge. It was so creamy and delicious. I highly recommend both! Though we were disappointed overall with the restaurant week experience, we were impressed with the options on the regular menu as well as the drink selection, which featured a selection of craft beers and ciders. I am going to give a 3.5-4 stars for my night out here, although i wasn't much of a fan of my meal. I really love the atmosphere here and the beer selection. it is a great place to grab drinks after work and have something to eat. The fire was going in the dining room and it was a very cozy, relaxing dinner. I have also been here during the summer and enjoyed the back patio. We started with a couple drinks. I wanted to try their Scottish IPA however they were out, i opted for the Lord Hobo IPA. The waitress didn't know which IPA it was, she was confused, but moments later the bartender came over and gave me details of all the IPAs on tap. it was a spark of amazing service. I ordered the Lord Hobo session IPA. We started with the dipping fries. They were great. The fries on their own were fantastic with the hint of truffle. All the dipping sauces were a great accompiant, and i saved them to go with my meal. I felt obligated to try the fish and chips after great reviews, but i should have opted for something else. It was under-seasoned and soggy, and then made the fries underneath soggy. I had most of the fish, adding malt vinegar and tartar to try to cover up how bland it was. I did not have the chips served with them because they were unfortunately under done and soggy. My friend raved about her ~very cheesy~ mac and cheese. It was still bubbling when it came out and looked uber creamy and cheesy. Looks like a good choice. I had a great night although my meal was not the best. While on a trip downtown for pre-concert fun, we walked down to The Olde English Pub for dinner and drinks. The setting was a delight, right off the bat from the England themed decor inside and out. The staff was welcoming and took good care of us throughout our visit.  I make it a point to order French Onion Soup whenever I see it on a menu when visiting somewhere for the first time, and this crock did not disappoint.  Deeply caramelized onions, rich beef flavor, served hot and extra Swiss cheesy - I would definitely order this soup again. My partner loved his dinner choice of fish & chips, and I also thought the steak-fry "chips" I stole from his plate were mega-delicious. I also munched on a BLTEA sandwich, a BLT with egg and smashed avocado, and was happy with how bright and crisp the sandwich was - a great compliment to the soup. Honestly, the food was better than I expected going in.  We also each ordered a local brew to cheers the night! We just had brunch at the Olde English Pub. We were there at 11 am when they opened, and it was freezing in there. We asked if they could turn the fireplace on and we were ignored. It was cold throughout our meal. The food was cold too, I got the BLTA, with non toasted bread, swimming in mayonnaise, limp bacon, undercooked egg and fries swimming in grease. My hot toddy was lukewarm. They served water in plastic cups, not sure why. My husband got the English breakfast, the beans were cold and everything else was lukewarm. This place is a great example of why eating at restaurants is an exercise in disappointment sometimes. The server was helpful and friendly though. read more

What a fantastic place! This is the only place I've found in Albany with a super charming, laid back outdoor area as well as fantastic food and drink. Most places with outside seating in this area offer you a view of a parking lot or a road ...but this place makes me feel like I'm on vacation. Fantastic friendly servers, greeters, bartenders, etc.. and the food was amazing! The menu changes but you can't go wrong. It was all fantastic. Great beer and drink choices as well. Plus the outside area is dog friendly. The waitress even brought one sweet lab a big bowl of water!. The first thing I think about is how well set up the ambience is. I've been to plenty of old pubs around london and this evokes their spirit of well used but warm and welcoming. From the eclectic English motif pictures to the slightly yellowish lighting interior to the inviting drinking garden in back. If you squint, you can imagine being transported to an English pub on a high street outside London. Now, the food was pretty good. Standard English pub fare of fish and chips, cottage pie and other staples. All executed well. My fish was tender and nestled in a light but well seasoned crust. Wanted to celebrate the summer solstice by taking a bike ride to a sunny patio to enjoy some cold beer, and The Olde English provided the perfect spot! Although the draft beer list is a little limited, I'm always able to find something I enjoy, and last night's Brooklyn Summer was the perfect accompaniment to a relaxing evening on the patio. The back patio looked inviting and hidden away, but my boyfriend and I weren't feeling the jazzy piano music streaming in so we decided to stay at the picnic tables in the front and watch the sun go down. We paired our beers with the dipping fries and each had a burger. My housemade black bean veggie burger was top notch, the aioli on top with the lettuce, tomato, and onion really brightened it up. Judging by how fast it disappeared, my boyfriend's pub burger was delish, he seemed to be most into the sunny side up egg on top! The serving of dipping fries we got as an appetizer was HUGE and was served with pub mustard, malted ranch, spicy aioli, and garlic-thyme aioli. We ordered it not realizing that our burgers also came with fries and by the time we finished our meal both of us were on french fry overload (thank god for the bike ride back up the hill to go home)! I've been to Olde English before and have been fairly apathetic about it. After today's experience, however, I will not be returning. Two friends and I met up for brunch. We were told we could find a seat in the garden area, so we did. Minutes after we sat down we were told by an employee that those tables are for bigger parties. We had been told we could take a seat anywhere but okay. So we got up and were shown to a different area with smaller tables. After a while the waitress came over to take our drink orders and we decided on an appetizer. We didn't want any drinks and our app came out in a reasonable amount of time. At this point I opened my silverware to see that both my fork and knife are dirty. I asked for new silverware and what was brought out was also dirty. Fortunately they had brought out an extra set and that was clean. We ordered our meals and it took FOREVER (close to an hour) for two orders of French toast and a salad. The French toast was supposed to come with whipped cream, fresh berries, and berry compote. It was served with the compote. My friend asked for the whipped cream and we were informed that they were out. I asked for syrup and the waitress walked away before we could ask for the fresh berries. She came back with syrup and I asked about the berries. Then she said they were also out of them and that if she had known she would have told us. I would have ordered a different meal had I been made aware of this ahead of time. The French toast was fine, nothing special by any means though I really would have liked the whipped Cream and berries, and my friend said the salad seemed as though it had been sitting for a while. Nothing was said about the long wait and no apology given for two of the most selling points of the French toast not being available. And nothing taken off of the bill for this either. Again, I would have just preferred a different meal. It was just a disappointing experience. I won't be going back. Pros: the two staff we interacted with were polite and the garden area is lovely Cons: the wait time was absurd, I really would have appreciated knowing that the French toast would not be served as described on the menu, and we only received a flippant "I would have told you if I'd known" regarding the ingredients they were out of. I've actually never been before, but decided to stop here to take advantage of the free birthday cider after dining elsewhere. I left wishing we had gotten our meals here, after sampling a few of their apps to go along with the cider. The cider was HUGE, and honestly would be sickening to try to consume by myself. Luckily my two sisters had no problem guzzling it down. It's served in a giant tea cup, which is cute and different than what you find at other establishments. We ordered the beef wellingtons and dipping fries to share as well. Both were good, but honestly the fries were probably the best I have ever had. Is that weird to say? They were just the right size and shape, and perfectly crisp. The malted ranch was a game changer and something I've never had before. As a lover of vinegar and ranch dressing, I'm surprised it never crossed my mind. The restaurant was pretty slow, but it was a Monday night, and after prime dinner hours. Oh, and it was snowing. From what I've heard the patio is great during the warm months, so I'm excited to return and check that out this year. read more

It's about a 3 1/2 mile walk to view all twenty of the Nipper dog statues scattered around downtown Albany. That can build up quite a thirst. So as we finished our tour 'd canine where we started, in front of the Olde English Pub & Pantry, it was the perfect opportunity to find relief and cool off with a draft. A lot of things have changed since I first wrote about Olde English six years ago. You no longer need cash, although they still have an ATM on site, and you no longer need to pay for your drinks at the bar before taking a seat at a table. Those are all changes for the good. Maybe even that final half-star good. I had a pint of Firestone Walker's nitro Merlin Milk Stout ($7) while my wife had her longtime favorite, Fuller's ESB ($7). She was so thrilled to have once again had the ESB. I was amazed by the creamy head on my Merlin. Its head was so thick and creamy it reminded me of a milk shake. For a quick bite we tried their Scotch Duck Egg ($8) and Avocado Chips ($10). Yes, the scotch egg is actually made with a duck egg, prompting my wife to comment how large the egg looked. Making the scotch egg doubly good was the use of duck sausage. The breaded coating was crisp and everything tasted well together with pickled shallots, mixed greens and whole grain mustard on the side. The avocado chips might be my favorite over the ones found at another local establishment that first turned the capital district on to breaded and deep fried avocado slices. So crispy on the outside yet creamy on the inside, they came with curds of Yorkshire Fettle (a British feta), blueberries, spinach, a spicy aioli, and lemon & chili flakes. Put a little bit of everything in your mouth and the flavors pop. It's a great relaxing atmosphere in this old Albany house, and service is quick and friendly. What a shame. Server was nice and drinks were fine (though, at what looked like a full bar, they didn't have Baileys). Food was terrible - gave both of us stomach aches. There was junk piled up everywhere, an employee counting a cash drawer at one of the tables in the main dining area, and the owner's or an employee's (very cute and sweet) little children were camped out napping and doing after school activities in the main dining area. Nothing against the kiddos at all but that's just flat out not appropriate, and house business needs to be conducted out of sight of guests. The little quaint house though was absolutely an utter charm; seems like a place that someone who knew what they were doing passed down or sold to someone who didn't know at all what they were doing. Ambiance was very nice. Tables, fixtures, woodbeamed ceiling all fit well for this very old building, and the weather vane/lamp hanging over the staircase was fabulous! Service was just okay. Our server never came back to ask if we needed anything else or if our orders were okay. Mine was not. I ordered the bean burger with fries. Nice brioche bun with tomato and lettuce. The bean burger was tasteless with a consistency of mashed potatoes. The steak fries that accompanied my bean burger were only room temperature and soggy. Companion ordered a burger with lettuce and tomato. Server never asked how it was to be cooked, but it came a perfect medium. Menu is very limited. read more
