If you're looking for the best "Coney Island" style hot dogs in the area, look no further than Newest Lunch. I have been loving this place for 40 years. Although they have a full menu for breakfast and lunch, I never bother just order "two with everything" or more frequently "with everything but onions" and a side of fries. The meat sauce is reminiscent of Cincinnati Skyline Chili if you're familiar with that. The "everything" includes mustard, meat sauce and chopped raw onions. A side of French fries are always hot, and cooojed to perfect crispy outside and fluffy inside. A side order is a generous helping (enough to share). The decor hasn't changed in 40+ years of going here. The same wooden booths with vinyl seats (some patched with matching tape), at the counter are the old style vinyl diner counter spinning stools you expect in a 1950's diner. It's not winning any awards for trendy decor but the staff are friendly and the food is what you're there for. The whole experience is a bit of a throwback to simpler times When I moved out of town for college, I would always make sure I fit in a trip to Newest to sate my craving for their dogs. Personally, I was not impressed with my delivery order. I got a chicken sandwich that was okay, but not great. For me, a good chicken sandwich is an important staple for this type of place. I also order potato salad which said it was made with seasoned potatoes, but I found it to be bland. Some pepper perked it up, but it was not what I was expecting. My child ordered pancakes and turkey sausage, which they really liked, but the butter was packed in with the pancakes and so liquified. One of the best breakfast sandwiches I've had lately. The bacon was so crisp without being overdone and they nailed the well-done home fries. It was busier than I anticipated when we arrived on a Saturday morning. The counter was pretty much full and I think we snagged the last available booth. It was nice to have the privacy of a booth but I think next time I would opt for the counter because it was a very tight squeeze for someone who is larger and the seats were quite low so my legs were getting sore also. There seemed to be a lot of regulars coming in, which makes sense because the service was very friendly. I don't know how this place is getting all this great reviews, I got 2 hot dogs with the works they did not taste good at all The meat sauce was bland and looked like pet food the hot dogs themselves had hardly any flavor. I took a few bites of the first dog and couldn't do no more I threw out the second one. I also got onion rings they had no flavor and was a bit burnt. I am betting that most towns in this country have a restaurant that tells a story like this one. Sons, Fathers, Grandfathers and even Great Grandfathers may have sat at the counter at Newest Lunch. They are a simple sandwich shop. They have breakfast. They are very famous for their coney style hot dog which is found in many regions i.e. Rochester, Texas, Detroit. A Coney is a hot dog with mustard, meat sauce and lots of chopped raw onions. The one at Newest Lunch is fantastic. People have been coming here for that hot dog for 98 years. There is a plaque on the wall commemorating the business. This restaurant is worth visiting just for the history! I am also a big fan of the soup. The creamy chicken rice is really good. Don't swear at me but there is a better Coney style dog in the electric city. The one here is still awesome. Yes this restaurant is a dump, dimly lit, in a run down portion of Schenectady. Parking is tricky. Not the best hot dog I've ever had, and not the worst. Old style, typical of NY State and indeed Schenectady. This town is probably more famous for these dogs than any other type of food, as it seems many small towns are. It's nice and greasy, pretty cheap, and the service is nice. Something about old-time counter-service hot-dog joints makes me want to order coffee with my dog. It seems like an unusual pairing. But there is something kind of perfect about it. Newest Lunch is another one of these wonderful places. And it's great. Great flavor. Juicy dog. Super soft white bun. Satisfying proportions of mustard / meat sauce / raw onion. The only thing; the one drawback, was that the dog itself had no snap to it. You know, that great toothsome bite you get when your teeth break through the perfectly fried casing. It's the best part of a dog done on the griddle. What it looses in snap, it gains in juiciness. This is a local establishment that has what I'd consider some of the best Hotdogs in the area. I've tried several of the other local hotdog joints and most are average while Newest Lunch is gets my hands down vote as a place to grab a hotdog. There is absolutely nothing special or fancy about this place and it would be easy to simply look at the exterior and keep on driving. This place has been around for almost 100 years and has a very loyal local customer base. They have a full menu outside of hotdogs, but I've honestly have only tried their hotdogs so I can not speak to anything other than hotdogs. You just ain't had a good dog if you ain't had newest dogs... The perfect meatsauce mild spices, no wet sauce or grease dripping all over your shirt - the bun stays dry and they are just scrumptous! When my grandfather was a kid he would come sit at the same counter and get 2 dogs with the works for a nickel! Although much in this city has changed this place remains the same - BUSY... I work around the corner and sometimes we call in a breakfast order, it's always done quick and perfectly. My only complaint would be that whenever I order wheat toast I get white toast but it's not even worth losing a star over. Greatest Hot dogs in the Universe as far as I'm concerned. No question the "all the way" dog with mustard, meat sauce and chopped raw onions on a White Eagle dog on a steamed bun, is the best anywhere. I had my first Newest Lunch hot dog with everything as a kid about 50 years ago, and the same great taste is still there. My Mom tried to duplicate the secret recipe for the meat sauce for years, to no avail. My Dad told me the place hadn't changed much since the 40's. The restaurant hasn't been changed much at all since I was a kid, the wooden booths are still there, as well as the counter & swivel stools. If you like original retro, this is the place to go. Service is always friendly. The prices, adjusted for inflation, haven't changed much either. I'm sure that aliens from space would come to Earth, just for these hot dogs. I came here on business and was really craving a hot dog. I saw the reviews comparing this place to coney island in Detroit, so I thought I'd drop in. Now I've never had coney island in Detroit to compare this place to, but I have had coney island in Pampa, TX (which is phenomenal btw). This place didn't quite do it for me. Don't get me wrong, the small diner atmosphere was awesome! I love little whole in the walls. But the hot dogs were below average. I've had a lot of dogs in my day and this ranks low in my book. I did not like the meat sauce at all. I got a side of French fries as well. They were average as well. Maybe I should have got something else, but all the reviews suggested I go with the hot dog.
