SIZE DOES MATTER! If you're a wiener lover, you need to come and come quick to famous lunch. Small but large would flavor. So hard to match famous lunche's weiners and sauce. The temperature on these hotdogs are perfect. They do not burn the skin so they snap perfectly when you bite into them and their sauce has just the right amount of zip to make you drool. Just a little can't go wrong when you grab their wieners. The price ain't bad either.

Classic no-frills quick counter service for burgers and dogs. The mini hotdogs are locally famous as the diner has been around for generations and holds a special place in the heart of Troy.

The epitome of small town, family run diner that I am happy to support. My husband raves about the hot dogs here so we popped in on a slow Monday afternoon. We were warmly greeted and the second we mentioned I was from Los Angeles I was handed a paper menu to take back home with me along with a calendar. I love this place! The hot dogs are pretty outstanding- meat sauce, mustard and onions and you can easily eat two or three depending on your appetite. Famous Lunch is a gem and you should definitely make time to stop in and support this place!

Great little lunch spot, great atmosphere and great cost! These dogs are petite and perfectly cooked. We stopped here for lunch on a through drive out to Buffalo. Very friendly staff and quick to rotate through customers so that everyone is helped efficiently. The sauce was a tad too salty other than that the dog, the bun, the mustard, the raw onions spectacular!

I had read about this place several years ago and decided to take a ride up to Troy New York to look around the city and visit this luncheonette I arrived about 2 PM in the afternoon on a Thursday. They were people sitting at the counter and people sitting in the booth. You can see the hotdogs right from the front window they look delicious. The ball gentleman was friendly and asked what I would like. I said I'll take the lunch special which is 4 for hotdogs and a drink. These hotdogs are about half the size of a regular hotdog. They are known for their delicious meat sauce that they put on top of the hotdogs. So I ordered two with the meat sauce to without. I also had onions and mustard on my hotdogs. I ordered a side order of regular french fries. It was nice to sit at the counter. I watched the man at the grill prepare breakfast and burgers for people. My hot dogs came out quickly and looked delicious. The hotdogs were flavorful and had a nice nap. The meat sauce was delicious but not too overpowering or strong. It blended perfectly with the hotdogs. I enjoyed the french fries as well Regulars came in and would sit in the booth and then call their order out to the same nice man that I gave my order to when I walked in. It was kind of neat that they did it this way saying "so you got what I wanted to eggs over easy with hashbrowns bacon" Definitely come here and get the hotdogs you won't be disappointed. They have been in business since 1930to almost 90 years now. The burgers looked good too expensive for a double cheeseburger. I'll definitely come back here again and get hotdogs and maybe I'll try the cheeseburger as well. Breakfast looked tasty as well

Two words: Surprisingly Fulfilling. We ordered take out from this place in the heart of Troy. The place is small and rather crowded and there's no social distancing expected, so we ordered the dogs and ate at a park in the nearby Russell Sage campus. I thought all chili dogs are created alike but theirs is definitely so good. The toppings are not the typical chili you'd expect -- it's dryer, less chunky and more diced. You can feel the skin as you bite into it, which adds to the flavor while not overpowering -- the hot dogs really don't need additional condiments. I didn't order anything else but the half dogs, but while each of them may look small, nope, they will fill your stomach just fine. Nothing too healthy here of course, but it's a nice spot for a quick bite.

Great place for hot dogs. I used to go there all the time when I lived in Troy. Every time I go back to Troy, I always make a stop there.

Sometimes I just need one lonely wiener and eat it outside in the alley.

It was darkly lit inside (with pinkish/red lights no less); it was extremely loud to the point that I had trouble understanding what my wife was saying (which might not be the background music!); and the prices were expensive. The entire night they played 1980s New-wave British music which I don't mind, but had it been something I detest I would have lost my mind. We were seated at a tiny table with a small candle which provided some actual heat on the cold winter night. Our server was extremely helpful and though he didn't have all the answers he did offer to go and find out. They have a long menu but it doesn't have a lot of food options on it, with most of the pages devoted to alcohol. They had only one dessert option when we were there. My wife and I both ordered the Hanger Steak with fries, mushroom sauce, and green salad (about $40 each). Hanger steak is my favorite cut and hard to find so I jumped on it. Food came out in about 25 minutes, which is amazing considering how small their kitchen is. The steak was cooked perfectly (they didn't ask how we wanted it), smothered in a lovely mushroom sauce, and covered an ample portion of crispy homemade fries which were so good I would have thought them bagged frozen items. Even the basic salad which was just various types of lettuce was great. They aren't cheap, but they are focusing on "farm to table" and that means quality food at commensurate (fair?) prices. Burgers and chicken sandwiches are $15, so if you want something lighter but still tasty you can go that route. Speaking of light, if you go into the bathroom on the right you will find a cold, dark, tiny room lit solely by a PINK bulb. It feels like being on a spaceship (as if I know what that is like), and after when you leave seeing the main light in the restaurant is very jarring. It was a fun experience but not inexpensive and not one that checks the boxes that I look for in a restaurant. Dark, loud, and cramped might be hip for the young or "save the earth" crowd, but I am too old to give up creature comforts for such things. The food, though expensive, was absolutely outstanding in every way though and I won't forget that steak for a long time.

My girlfriend ordered the special Raspberry Nutella French Toast. It came with strawberries and we were told, "we're out of raspberries so we substituted strawberries." That is total BS. How about telling us you are out of raspberries and asking if we want something else. My girlfriend can't really eat strawberries since they make her break out. Even worse is I STILL didn't have my food. Server said, "yours is coming, but I didn't want these to get cold." After the rest of my party was halfway done with their breakfast and I still didn't have mine, I asked for a manager. I was told there is no manager there...another load of BS. Server came back and I told her I didn't want my food at this point. She said, "okay, I'll just bring the bill." Are you f'ing kidding me??? You expect us to pay for this crap?? Needless to say, I will NEVER be back to this $hithole. Service is horrible and they will not let you complain to a manager. No manager is there on a busy weekend day? I find that hard to believe. Their tipsy cocktails and beer menu is also quite attractive. My group and I were able to walk in on a weekend evening for dinner with no wait and while it was packed inside, it still felt roomy enough. However, the surrounding tables were rowdy and the noise was reverberating. Our server was attentive though she did admit it was busy and the wait time for orders would take a bit longer than usual. The menu has plenty of starters that are highly shareable, poutine, salads, soups, mac and cheese, burgers, pizzas, sandwiches, wraps, and quesadillas. Haven't had real poutine in ages so I decided to try their gravy fries with smoked cheese curds and added bacon. It was a good portion for the price ($15+) and came out hot on a cast iron skillet. The cheese curds weren't the type I expected and melted down too much, and did not have that squeaky cheese bite one would want in poutine. The gravy and the bacon worked well with the fries though! The smoked brisket French onion soup ($8+) was extremely hot when it first came out and I had to let it cool down before taking a spoonful. The cheese was so bubbly and delicious and the soup itself was flavorful (maybe a tad too salty), and had a balanced amount of onions and brisket. I would definitely get the soup again. Their barbecue pulled pork quesadilla ($15+) was also a bit too salty and meat was more tough than preferred. We also tried two of their mac and cheese selections, which came in a small cast iron pot each ($17+). The bacon chicken ranch mac and cheese was good but the jerk chicken mac and cheese was not as memorable (not much jerk flavor). Kudos for having a build-your-own mac and cheese option as well as a mac and cheese flight if you want to try more than one flavor. I'm glad to return to try other menu items at this tap and tavern and see what else catches my eye. While this visit wasn't spectacular, it also wasn't bad. The French onion soup is one thing I know I'd get over and over again. Oh, they also have a credit card transaction fee that you will see once you get the bill. Pay in cash if you mind said fee.

We arrived early and were seated promptly; water was poured before we even had napkins on laps. This surprised me, as reviews indicated that service could be slow and this was a holiday. But this started a constant service of someone checking in on us every 2-3 minutes (I am prone to exaggeration for a good story, but I assure you this was true. I kept checking my watch to confirm). We put in an appetizer order (deviled eggs) that was served within a minute or two. These were well seasoned and tasty, ice cold from the refrigerator. It's not that they didn't taste fresh, but they were served to us so quickly that I know that they were prepared well in advance and only the warm pork belly was recently prepped. Our meals were served as the appetizer was finished (I was still chewing). At this point, we were 10 minutes into our seating. Our meals included steak and eggs, which I incorrectly assumed would require a little bit more time. Not true! Our plates arrived, piping hot and tasty enough...but boy did we feel rushed. Our server, the manager, bussers, and other attendants stopped by our table every few minutes. I recognize this was a holiday, but there was not a steady stream of people coming through the doors and plenty of open tables were available. Our conversation was repeatedly interrupted with these check-ins and we all took great care to eat the meal as slowly as possibly to stretch things out. At this point we were on track to be out the door in 30 minutes. As a table we made a decision to order dessert and we were able to savor and dawdle long enough to get us to one hour. $180 later, we finished our Easter visit out in the parking lot where no one was pushing us out. (I will note that several families arrived after us and completed their meals in 30ish minutes. What's special about brunch when it's that rushed?) I wish I could review the food better, but my taste buds hardly had time to register the experience. Entrees were hot but clearly prepared well in advance and kept at the ready under heat lamps or in warming ovens. The dessert was cold and sweet as appropriate, but had that prepped yesterday feel to it. This is not what I expect from a restaurant that markets itself as a fresh farm to table establishment. I don't quite regret going to Scarlet Knife, but there are enough quality restaurants in the greater area that I probably won't return.
