My nephew treated me to lunch here. It was my 1st time. They have a really unique setting: an extra large "phone booth" - the windows display old Iphones. The table tops are sliced up trees. The waiting benches are cinder blocks with wood fence posts. Open kitchen view. Really unique and very tasteful. Now comes the best part: The menu choices were enticing. My nephew suggested the Albany burger: fresh and natural handcrafted ground beef patty, pepper jack cheese, caramelized onions and mushrooms, pickles, extra "napkin" sauce. OMG!!!! Divine burger! Wow! I decided to grab a burger and go a few doors down to the Warbler to enjoy their fresh brewed beer and some live music. What a fantastic idea. I got the Albany and had them use cheddar in place of the America cheese. When I sat down at the bar... several knowing regulars and the bar tender looked at my burger and said - ohhhh extra napkin- great idea. And it was! The burger was perfectly cooked, juicy and the beef was spiced - maybe just simple Salt and pepper but it had great flavor. They included lettuce, tomato, lovely pickles that were a little sweet and special house sauce. It came with ketchup packets which I didn't need. So much flavor already between the fresh brioche bun. Always thrilled when I dine/takeout from any restaurant owned by this amazing family. I was having 8 to 10 friends over on a Friday night and wasn't up for cooking. I called and Ayhan the owner gave me an idea of what he put together and it was easy And delicious. A platter of hot chicken kebabs, warm pita, hummus, taziki, and a huge salad. Looks can be deceiving. Ordered from Grub Hub. Patty is so thin and burnt. When you bite into it tastes like your biting straight up charred meat and cardboard. Not juicy at all. I'd rather not have that fancy extra napkin stamp on the bun but have a regular patty in that burger instead. The cheesy fries taste like soft frozen fries with yellow liquid cheese poured over. Buffalo Mac & cheese was sub par. They just added crispy chicken with hot sauce poured over. I could've made a better meal at home. I knew we were on to someplace interesting when the day after we settled on where to go for lunch the local newspaper published a review of the place. Extra Napkin is mostly a takeout place. They've got a couple of tables that will each seat 2 or 3 people, and there are 4 or 5 stools at a counter overlooking the parking lot and Delaware Ave. The kitchen is open to the entire eating area. The last business here was a takeout pizza place if that helps to give you a feel for the ambiance (or lack thereof). There is a pretty wide variety of items to choose from including the obvious fast food appetizers (e.g., onion rings, chicken fingers, wings, tater tots, etc.), sandwiches & wraps, hot dogs, salads (both house-planned and build-your-own), kebabs, and burgers (again, both hours-planned and build-your-own). Beverages include a raw juice bar, coffee, and soda (mostly Mexican made with real sugar). No alcoholic beverages are available. I decided to go with the in-house designed burger, the Albany ($6,99), with a hand-shaped patty, caramelized onions, mushrooms, pickles, pepper jack cheese, and the house made Extra Napkin sauce, all served on a toasted brioche roll. I also opted to add Fries for $2. The roll was soft and fresh. I don't recall being asked how I wanted my burger cooked, so it came out medium, but it had a nice crust. I can't say it was dry though, because the Extra Napkin sauce provided an adequate amount of moisture, in addition to flavor with a bit of a bite. My only weak spot in this burger was that the onions were stringy when you took a bite. Otherwise, this was a very good tasting and enjoyable burger. The fries were average. I decided to try a raw juice drink ($5.99/$12 oz.; $6.99/16 oz.) for something totally different. The number SEVEN is a mix of orange and carrot juice with ginger. It certainly was very colorful and it gave me the feeling that I was enjoying something healthy along with my burger and fries. My lunch partner ordered the Troy wrap ($8.59), turkey breast, turkey bacon, romaine lettuce, shredded cheddar, avocado, tomatoes, red onions, and ranch dressing. He was pleased with his choice and took half home. The staff are nice and friendly, the place is very clean. I'm likely to stop back some day to try the kebabs. read more

I like pointy things - pointy scissors, pointy fangs, pointy elbows, pointy shoes, and pointy food. Using my sharp X-ray vision I permeated the menu at Extra Napkin to see what lay beneath, and there it was - Kebabs. I don't care if they make burgers and fries and veggie patties and hot dogs and milk shakes - under all that usual fast food stuff was something dangerously good. Ground Kofte Kebabs ($11.99) was four perfect little patties seasoned with garlic, cumin, ginger, coriander, etc.. It stuck me how fragrant and juicy they were, grilled, served on soft warm pita with a side of tzatziki and salty hummus, as well as rice (good rice, too) and a generous side salad - delicious. Try the house "sauce" on your salad (spices, ketchup, mayo) - rich, you may not like it, but I loved it's spiked simplicity. Stitch enjoyed a beautiful Mediterranean Salad ($9.99) with a Greek vinaigrette, fresh greens with cuke and green pepper and cherry T's and red onion, (canned) olives, topped with loads of feta. Half will be for later today - too much for one, this would be a good dish to share next time around. Oh, and did someone say Onion Rings? ($5.99) OK it's hard to pass on rings. These were intensely intensely crispy, served hot, the onion didn't slip out like slugs from the coating - absolutely some of the best in Albany. Eating them all yourself will be hard, but sometimes sharing is even harder, so be aware that the service is plastic - no pointy tines to stick into the hands of others trying to steal from your plate. My quest to find the Capital Region's best burger continued as I made my way to Extra Napkin. I ordered the Delmar Burger and a chocolate shake. The burger was good, but I have had much better. The beef was flavorful, but the bun was a little stale. It was a little hard and didn't have any flavor. The sauce on the burger was really good, but there wasn't a lot on it. Also, the pickles on the burger tasted "cheap". The burger was fine, but I felt it was definitely not worth $10, especially when I can get a Five Guys burger for $7. The chocolate shake was good, it was tasty, but there was some ice in it. Extra Napkin is a fine burger place, but it isn't in the same stratosphere as a Five Guys or other Capital Region burger joints. read more

Decent enough but disappointed by first experience here. Shared a Bethlehem burger and tots but asked for chili sauce for tots on the side. Instead the sauce drenched the tots rendering them inedible and they got tossed. If the tots came out correct, I would have given 4.5 stars. Ordered two burgers from here and are honestly baffled. In the past this was my favorite place to get a burger in Delmar - the burgers were always thick, juicy, cooked perfectly, had quality toppings, and had the restaurant name stamped into the buns. But this time around was completely different. One burger had the wrong type of cheese (Albany burger came with swiss instead of pepper jack) and the patties for both were thin, sad, and charred completely on the outside. No stamped name on the buns, no extra napkin sauce on the side... Maybe it was just a fluke, but honestly from this impression I probably wouldn't attempt getting burgers from here again. read more

Not only did we enjoy this meal (chicken kebabs) but the service was also excellent. We realized at first the restaurant closed at 9 pm and it was 8:45 when we called to place the order. We know this can be annoying for restaurant workers but it was our closest and last option for dinner tonight. We had never been here before and had always wanted to try it. The woman was so nice on the phone and when we got our food she was very polite and kind, considering we had them start cooking for us 15 minutes before closing. The food came out hot, it tasted AMAZING (especially for this not being only a Mediterranean restaurant), and the side salad was so good. It took 28 minutes to receive my order, despite being told by cashier Kenneth C. that it would be ready in 8 minutes when order was taken. Food was lukewarm when received. Bottom of burger bun was hard, as if not fresh, Lamb Wrap contained little lamb, ($10.99) and fries did not seem like they were freshly cooked. Won't be back. Another day, another gourmet burger shop. Extra Napkin of Delmar is a welcomed addition to an area that seems to rely on pizza as its only take out option. I came to Extra Napkin for lunch in February 2016, about two months from its opening and it seems like the business is starting to pick up. I ordered the Albany Burger, which came served on a brioche bun and topped with grilled onions, lettuce, cheese, and the shop's signature sauce. The patty was cooked to about medium, maybe a bit closer to medium well. As others have noted, the patty is quite dense and likely the result of over pressing. I picked up on subtle Middle Eastern flavors throughout the patty, but none were so overpowering to definitively identify. Extra Napkin's signature sauce was quite good. The tomato based sauce is a nice counterpoint to the savory patty and gobs of melted cheese on the burger. The only issue is that the sauce made the delicious brioche bun a bit soft causing the patty and toppings to slide out with each bite. Despite this, this was a mostly solid burger that I'd consider ordering again. In addition to burgers, Extra Napkin offers wraps, sandwiches, salads, and kebabs. Of the kebabs, one of the employees noted that the kebab plate is their most ordered and beloved dish. I will return to Extra Napkin because I think it has great potential. If you're in the area and are looking for some quick takeout that isn't pizza, Extra Napkin is the place. read more

A co-worker and myself went to check this new burger place out today for lunch. I was very pleased to see a different burger offering in the Delmar'hood for variety sake. Extra Napkin's menu is nice with offerings ranging from garlic knot appetizers (6 for $3.99) to $10.99 lamb kebabs and a raw juice bar. The menu is also made up of the requisite burgers BUT with local names like the Delmar, Albany and Lark or for healthier fare, there's salads called the Slingerlands, Latham and Glenmont....sorry no Guilderland yet. Burgers and salads are both offered in a "build your own" style as well. The store front looks nice and inviting with parking right in front or a larger parking lot next door. Inside Extra Napkins is very clean, since it's only been open since Friday, the place is spotless. It has a nice whimsical art décor with comic book art on one wall. A few pub tables upfront and more seating just around were the raw juice bar is. Now we both had the Delmar burger, hand roasted natural ground beef patty, romaine, double cheeses, tomatoes, onions, pickles, extra napkin sauce. I will never claim to be a foodie nor the smartest in a room (even if I am), but "hand roasted beef", I wasn't sure and google did no better. For $6.99 this was a good size burger, unlike those you find in places like Burger 21. The burger itself was dense in texture, not thick. It was odd to me, not bad tasting, tho' it had a flavor I couldn't place maybe it was the Extra Napkin sauce. You can have it served on a brioche like we did, sesame or hard roll. The real disappointment was the fries. In my eyes but mainly my taste buds McDonalds fries are the benchmark, Extra Napkin fries aren't even close. My co-worker in contrast liked her burger and had no issue with the "dense" texture of the burger. Although I'm giving this place 2 stars (my co-worker would give her burger 4 stars)I will try it again...I like buying local and the front counter service was great. I really tried to like this place. My family orders it for delivery about 1x every couple of months. The fries and sides have been consistently okay, the milkshakes are good (although I'm not a big milkshake drinker & am going by what my family says,) but of the 2-3 times I gave their burgers a try, I felt like the texture of the meat was just not quite right.
