Well this is very hard for me to write because I want to support local businesses. However the food that we ordered this evening from Wagon Train bbq was just bad. I do not have one redeeming or kind word for any of it. The barbeque chicken was like eating the dry turkey from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation movie. The brisket was dry and pulled pork moist but no flavor. Anybody knows that when you make baked macaroni and cheese you need to use cheese, milk, butter and flour. This was overcooked pasta with no cheese at all in it. I don't want to be this hard and we are still in a mess since Covid-19 but if this is your best, I'll gladly make my own. Had a pulled chicken sandwich and my husband had the beans, cheese and hot dogs. My sandwich came with a side of corn bread and i was to pick a side, I choose Mac & Cheese. My sandwich was served on a fresh roll, that is what the menu said. The chicken was not pulled it was cut in small chunks and was very dry, i left the mac and cheese, i didn't expect the mac & cheese to taste like home but i wanted a close second, didn't happen very bland without flavor. My husband enjoyed his hot dogs.. The corn bread was moist and very good. I obtained a living social coupon to try Wagon Train and wasn't sure what to expect. Turns out, it was one of the best BBQ places I have been to in the area. Typically, my boyfriend and I went to Dinosaur BBQ in Troy, NY but we were always unhappy with the small portions. Wagon Train gives HUGE portions of their food, and it rivals in quality to Dinosaur BBQ. Furthermore, the atmosphere is awesome! Although the restaurant is small in size, the character of the place really stands out with all the decorations and old-time feel. We were both more than satisfied with out meals, as I tried the pulled BBQ chicken meal w/ mac & cheese and he had the pulled beef brisket meal w/ beans. Went to Wagon Train last night for the first time.The inside of the restaurant is like being in the southwest.The interior is beatiful with its two stone walls ,fireplace, and a woodstove.It has many rifles hanging from the ceiling and two cannons. I ordered their wood fired PIZZA cooked at 1000 degrees! I had cheese, homemade sausage, mushrooms, and anchovies. It was great and very Italian. I was very surprised how tender the crust was being wood fired. My girlfriend had the 1/2. barbequed chicken with Mac and cheese, and their great corn bread. It to was fabulous. I am late coming to the party but will now be a regular customer. I have one request...they need to carry bottled beer along with their draft and wine selections. read more

We walked in 1/2 hour before closing with two kids, and they didn't even blink. I had Yelped this place in Syracuse, and I was hoping we would make it! Soooo glad we did! The KC barbeque sauce was amazeballs. The ribs would have been excellent without it, but the sauce really put them over the top. We also had pulled pork, wing dings, barbeque chicken, mac and cheese, cole slaw and the sweet potato fries. It was ALL worth busting my diet for! My only regret is not getting dessert to go. My husband and I visited for the first time on Sunday from Cleveland, Ohio. We were visiting the area as well as Saratoga Springs for the weekend and luckily stumbled upon your restaurant. What a gold mine! Having lived in cities known for their barbecue, I am picky. We tried this place on the suggestion of a friend and were blown away. The platters were heaping with food -- and good quality. The meat was moist, well cooked, and well seasoned. Lean cuts, too. There was no fat on our ribs or brisket. The pulled pork was moist with great flavor. Yummy cornbread that did not crumble. The beans had a chili texture, but my friend enjoyed them. I had the Mac salad, which was creamy and well put together. They were out of potato salad that day, which our very attentive and friendly server said was quite popular. You pay for meat meals, but there was so much on our plates we had lots to take home. We felt it was quite reasonable. The decor is appropriate, and the preschool aged boy next to us was loving all the animals and cowboy stuff. We will be going back and bringing friends. read more

I was told that we had to go to this bbq joint. It was the BEST in town! Unfortunately I will never be back. We ordered pulled pork, ribs, brisket and a said of mac and cheese. We took it to go as it was getting late. Everything was awful and dry. The mac and cheese had no flavor. I thought maybe it is just me and I am being picky about the food but my husband agreed that everything was dry. I was extremely disappointed as I had high hopes of this place. My visit to Wagon Train BBQ was a happy accident. The family and I were headed to Maine from Michigan on a long road trip, and my dad had planned all of our pit stops based on carefully researched local restaurants. In this family, New York equals BBQ. We've been and lived all over the United States, including many of the states famous for their BBQ tradition, but for some reason, New York State is home to all of our favourite joints. This particular coveted lunch spot on Dad's itinerary was held by another Schenectady BBQ hotspot, however after leaving the highway in search of that treasure, we found it to be closed. Our stomachs collectively felt understandably robbed of their chance at such lovely meats, so dad and I both hopped on our phones to find the nearest 4-5 yelp starred restaurant. After a little digging, Wagon Train popped on to my screen and we were on our way. When we found the restaurant, we were greeted with lifesize representations of a wagon train, complete with a plaster (?) figure hiding behind rocks, hunting for buffalo. If there's anything that gets me excited about a really good local spot, it's kitsch. I live for larger than life cowboys telling me to eat a steak or plaster alligators recommending crawfish. Really, if the reviews are good and the spot is kitschy, I'm sold. The inside of the restaurant is western themed. Wood burnings depict scenes of the wild west, and lighting fixtures hang from antlers tacked to the ceiling. Right inside the door is a counter for ordering BBQ to go, but we sat down for table service. I ordered the beef brisket sandwich with travelers beans and cornbread. The others at the table ordered a platter of rips, brisket, and pulled pork. My brisket was divine - tender and juicy. My only complaint about the sandwich was the size and chewiness of the roll. The bread itself tasted fantastic, but it made the sandwich as a whole very difficult to eat. I ended up discarding the bread in favor of eating the meat with a fork. There were two sauces on the table, a KC BBQ sauce and a honey chipotle sauce. I preferred the KC, but both complimented the meats very well. The cornbread was amazing, very moist and sweet - exactly right to balance the meal. The beans felt a little more like a very mild, very sweet chili than baked beans, but they were delicious...in fact, they may have been my favourite part of the meal. As a whole, I can't imagine our first "choice," had it been open, being any better than this...I was very impressed by the quality of food in this restaurant and would not hesitate to return if we pass this way again. read more

I love bbq, and this place is about 5 minutes if that from my house so we gave it a try. We called to pick up about an hour before they closed and they seemed annoyed on the phone. Me and my boyfriend both got the pulled pork sandwich with mac & cheese and corn bread. Pulled pork was good but it was just very bland... Same with mac & cheese.... Corn bread was delicious though. Id rather go out of my way to capital q, or Dino bbq if I'm really craving... I might try this place again, but I just was really disappointed. Not the worst, but definitely not the best. read more

It's ideal to think summer is over with and what better way to honor the end with barbeque food. The following are out of 5 Points. * (5) Customer Service - Meaning how well they assisted me in my needs. It's always a shocker when I call up a place and tell them I have a large amount of people coming and calling in a reservation, but not here. The lady who took my reservation was pleasant and more than eager to have me come in for dinner with 10 people. Anna was an excellent waitress, she was attentive and beyond pleasant with splitting the bill for all of us. I know sometimes it can be too much or even a well visual hassle to the wait staff, but she was more than happy to do so. They gave us two sampler trays of their appetizers and they were delicious. * (5) Decor - The atmosphere of the place. You can see that this is a place that draws its themes from Western American culture from the Wanted Posters to the various décor on the wall. Even outside have manikins with western themed culture attire. * (5) Food & Drink - How well the food tastes, their selection of drinks Before you look at the menu and say, what's so special about this place? It has hot dogs, hamburgers, and various comfort sides. That's not the point. They make their own BBQ Sauces and prep all the meats by smoking right on sight, same with desserts. Settlers Beans is something you will want to try, and don't think it's just some way of saying baked beans, because it's not that. There are a lot of beans in the mix and a spicy yet delicious sauce that they're cooked in. For a BBQ place, I've never seen ribs that were so meaty and juicy. This place is also known for their Graveyard Burger challenge, you'll see a picture below of this monster. * (5) Price - Here I am not grading my cost, but by the quality of the food I get for the money I spent. (Example: I pay $5 for a hamburger that I could make myself.) There is a lot of food for what you get. * (4) Presentation - How things are presented. Food, Drink, Staff, etc. I know I've said that a uniform is one of those things I love and go for when it comes to places of business, but here with the homey feel I don't mind it as much. Nor am I going to knock points off for poor food presentation when it was just too good to begin with. I have passed up stopping in this business for some time now. Since I am not a heavy beef/pork eater, it didn't appeal to me. Yesterday I saw the words "Seafood Special" on the outside board. A BBQ place with seafood is not unheard of. Most actually list these items on their menu, Wagon Train does not, and for good reason. I walked in and saw a Seafood Platter, (Fish, Scallops, Shrimp) listed on the specials board for $10.99 So I ordered one to-go. After getting home with my order, I found that this special came with a cole slaw, corn bread, shrimp, and scallops, but no fish. Oh it did have fried clams, which were not included on the board as an item in the special, but NO FISH. I don't know if someone forgot the fish, or the clams were supposed to take the place of the fish or what but, after getting it to go, and traveling 20 miles home, I wasn't going back to ask. and won't either. There is NO seafood on their menu. Advice.....stick to beef and pork, which I hope you do better than you do seafood. Oh, they get one star, because the clerk was pleasant. read more

This was one of the best restaurants I've been to. The whole ambience is absolutely perfect. All of the decor is great and the actual wagon train out front is so fantastic. The food was beyond amazing. I don't even like cornbread but I loved theirs. I even ordered more to take home. Their Kansas City barbecue sauce was delicious too on my fries and burger. With all the (fake? real? who knows) taxidermy, the rifles mounted on walls, the old wood stove, and life-sized models of horses and wagons--the best word to described this place is "kitschy". I was there on a Saturday night. There was live music which consisted of a guy with a guitar and harmonica singing, at times, the Goo Goo Dolls. They have an "order out" area and a dining area with wait service. The tables are large which ends up making the dining area seem small and cramped. But, I guess, when you have such large serving sizes you need big tables to support all the food. But it's not just American in its heavily Old Frontier theme, it's also American in its menu items. For example, I had the "Midnight Rodeo Burger" which along with the beef and the cheese, also includes helping of pulled pork and mac and cheese in between the buns. Excessive? Sure. Unhealthy? Probably. Delicious? No doubt. And that wasn't the most excessive burger on the menu. They also have one of those enormous meat-sweats inducing burgers that you get for free if you can get it down under 30 minutes. I didn't bother. I already know I am not Ron Sawson enough for that challenge. Other things of note: the corn bread was perfect. Moist, not dry or crumbly. The BBQ sauces were tried were good. The wait staff was very nice. Definitely swing by. You'll enjoy the food as well as the experience. read more

This is one of the best BBQ restaurants, and I've eaten BBQ all over the country! I had the Rodeo Chicken sandwich, my husband had a platter with the Ribs, Pulled Pork and Brisket. All the meats were perfectly done, moist and very tasty. The beans and cole slaw were great. Lots of "character" in the dining area, with many guns displayed, along with many stuffed animals. Took my daughter, and was greeted by a friendly staff. Was seated, and was told about the menu which was nice. My daughter got a Rodeo burger, and I had the train wreck! Portion size was big. Their sauces had a different flare, then the same old BBQ sauce. I liked the cozy decor. Very warm, and enjoyable. After bragging about the place my daughter went again to take her sister. We akways ask to buy and take home the rolls they serve with the burgers, they are specially made by a local bakery and are delicious the next day for breakfast! Food was good as usual. However when I ordered the lunch special which consisted of a sandwich and 1 side and cornbread. I asked for a cup of soup as my side. I asked the waitress if that was ok and she said yes. The soup was excellent. When the bill came I was charged an additional $3.50 for the cup of soup . I asked about the charge and said that was my "side". She replied no...... you didn't get a side. The rest of my group knew exactly what I asked for and couldn't understand why this was confusing. Regardless, I didn't press the issue over $3.50 but it's aggravating. I likely won't be back for a while as I tend to hold grudges. read more
