I've been going to Vace for years, always to pick up pizza, and today a real unpleasant surprise. The 16" pizza came in a smaller box than usual. I came home and opened up the box to discover a visibly smaller pizza that was missing toppings. Naturally I paid for the toppings and the large pizza. I know what you're thinking, isn't the pizza going to cook down and shrink a bit? Likely so, but not 3-4" in diameter. Some people dream about buying flat screen TVs or fancy shoes, but most of my retail fantasies involve food. So, walking into Vace was for me was what descending on a small boutique filled with steeply discounted Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik & Christian Louboutin might be for a shoe lover. In a word, heaven! My eyes wandered from the little bottles of San Pellegrino Limonata, Aranciata and Chinotto to the bags of fresh basil to the selection of Italian cheese, pastas and cured meats. It was hard to know where to start. I wanted the polenta, the sun dried tomatoes in the jar near the register, the gelato. I walked out with a six pack of Limonata and three slices of pizza. At $1.50 a slice, this pizza could have been just decent and I would've been impressed. Instead this pizza was remarkable! And I took my slices home and tossed them in the fridge before I ate them. I can only wonder how much better they'd have been if I'd taken them hot from Vace! I am going to scour my cookbooks and cooking magazines before my next trip to Vace. Now on to the ordering experience. If you are a Seinfeld fan, than you know of "The Soup Nazi" episode. Nothing fancy interior with stone cold counter service. You don't know where to stand or who to talk to. That is the Vace experience. You know it's that good so you keep coming back for more. You must respect the ladies behind the counter as they are the soul of the deli. You might get ignored, but that's cool...it happens to everybody. It's almost a rite of passage. You will quickly learn to order a good 1 hr in advance for big orders or during dinner rush. You then will smirk at the newcomers when you hear, "Where do we order?" Hah! You gave my order to somebody else. You then started to argue with your coworker about not doing so. Then you gave a different somebody else's order to me. After this comedy of errors, and as I was being handed my two hot & very greasy slices of pizza to go, I asked for a bag. Then you committed the most egregious customer service act. You looked me up and down, saw that I had a very full shopping bag, and made a terribly judgement face. You rudely informed that it would be five cents. Really?! After all of the errors and bad customer service I just witnessed. At a restaurant, and if not a restaurant a deli nonetheless. I don't mind paying the five cents, but it's the judgement and the scenario that make this really terrible. Of course the pizza was good, but this place now needs its service to be as good as its food. You have someone who clearly does not enjoy work anymore. Never, ever, ever, ever trust the lady when she tells you that your phone order for pick-up pizza will be ready in 15-20 minutes. It's a bald-faced lie. Even knowing this, we dropped by and lucked into a parking spot right in front of Vace a solid 40 minutes after we put in our order and were told that only one of our pizzas was ready, and that the other would be an additional five-minute wait. Awesomesauce. For not having their menu in front of me, the lady on the phone made ordering a pretty breezy process. I requested one veg and one meat pizza. So she started rattling off every single ingredient they had available, to which I responded with a quick 'yes' or 'no'. Needless to say, I had to cut myself off from ordering every single vegetable option under the sun. Meat was much simpler, and we ended up with a pepperoni, sausage, and peperoncini medley that won out, based on the fact that we only had one slice left over. Two large (and by 'large' I mean 'massive') fresh-out-of-the-oven pizzas to-go came to about $30, and was about double the food necessary to satisfy a party of four adults and two toddlers. We went a little bit overboard with the medium-sized container of mixed olives for around $10, too. I mean... if you're going to splurge, you might as well go all-out. Vace makes for a reliably good takeaway if you live in the neighbourhood. It might not be the most affordable option, but you're going to end up with a product that sure beats the likes of Domino's or Pizza Hut. Just make sure to give your order plenty of extra time, and be prepared to be utterly wowed by some finger-lickin' food - you won't even be able to leave the crust behind! read more

This is a great little hole in the wall Italian deli, a real neighborhood gem. It has a small grocery area and a deli counter to order the sandwiches and pizza. Where else are you going to find slices of pizza this good for 2.50 each in DC? Its a limited selection, but excellent. The sandwiches are equally good- the deli meats are freshly sliced, and made with just a little bit of olive oil drizzle- no need for a lot on these to taste delicious, all for $6. The staff has always been friendly to me whenever I've come in at lunch. This is one of my go to places in the Cleveland Park area. read more

My pizza allegiances lie in Italy, New Haven, and Chicago, so I find the concept of good pizza available by the slice highly unnatural-- slices are the domain of bad late-night dives, shopping malls, and cafeterias. But Vace proved that my prejudices were wrong. There is no rational reason that a single slice of pizza should be this good, but it is. And cheap too. I hear the deli items are worth investigating but I've never been able to tear myself away from the pizza. read more

The one thing that frustrates me: There is a woman working there that I avoid at all costs. If you call in an order "too close" to the cutoff time for ordering a pizza, you get the feeling she's angry with you; her tone is very gruff and sometimes accusatory. I have personally never NOT experienced her be aggressive to me when I'm picking up an order. It's the kind of behavior I would expect from someone who has a personal beef with me. Vace had been a Cleveland Park institution for a long ass time, I've heard. The homemade pasta is simply to die for. Here's what you do: you go into Vace, get some lasagna noodles or whatever, you get the sauce, you take it all home, you make it yourself and it's amazing. Or you could just buy the noodles there, because they are made fresh daily. The pizzas here are probably the best in the city. They do the whole sauce on top of the cheese thing, which I just love. They've got spinach pies and other Mediterranean/Italian treats, and all sorts of imported preserves and ingredients. Whatever you want to make a great Italian meal, they've got it. Prices are reasonable. Vace is a wonderful place and I can't wait to get my next slice of pizza. read more

Today was March 14, 2016, which is also Pi Day - my favorite holiday as an atheist. (I also like Yom Kippur.) I anxiously waited all day at work to put some pie in my mouth. When my boyfriend, Ben, offered to get said pie in my mouth, I couldn't refuse. I quickly biked to his house, while he ordered some Vace pizza. He says the "phone lady was very helpful." FYI, the sizes are 14 and 16 inches (medium and large, respectively). Why is one not a small and a large? I don't know. We drove to Vace and got an artichoke, red pepper, spinach and pancetta pizza. The line was three deep. NOTE: the credit card minimum is $5, which is reasonable yet broke my heart because I wanted to buy an alfajor which was $1.55 plus tax. (I studied abroad in Argentina and developed a taste for alfajores. I can't believe they sell them here! What a find.) Fast-forward to thirty minutes later. We re-toast the pizza in my toaster oven for maximum CRUST CRISPINESS. Mission accomplished! My theory is that the crust is extra delicious here because it tastes fried salty bread. Like fried dough, but savory. Excellent topping selection and high quality ingredients. I'm soon going to go again, then I will bring pizza to Atomic down the block and eat it alone with a cold beer. The bottom line: Extremely good pizza, subs, and fresh homemade pasta at a great price! I love Vace for a quick couple of slices and its fresh homemade pasta. The pizza is relatively thin crust and the sauce has a great balance of sweet and rich tomato. The fresh-made pasta is super for supplementing home meals. The fresh-made mozzarella and frozen pesto are also delicious! Things to think about: Vace pizza crust is at its crispy best when fresh from the oven or reheated (if they ask you if you want it hot, say "yes"). The the pepperoni pie can be a bit oily (if you buy slices, watch out for drips from the foil.) The service ranges from "quite friendly" to "seemingly-harsh/curt." I find they often reciprocate a friendly demeanor. Service can be much slower if you order something that's not already prepared (like the lunch subs, pizza or spinach pie). I have to say that I feel lucky to have Vace in my neighborhood. read more

I used to love this place. Last Sunday I walked over there from a conference I was attending near DuPont circle. Their subs used to be amazing - something I day dreamed about! I've recently moved to DC and have started making Vace a regular stop on the way home. Delicious cold-cuts for $6 and cheap pizza-by-the-slice. The service is kind of to-the-point (read: rude), but I kind of like that. The driver called and said the lady was extremely rude, and that she decided to close her kitchen at 7:15. Why then was the order confirmed at 7:22? And why did it take 13 minutes to reevaluate? VERY good little Italian place. Slice was good, and they do half-baked. NY style, with sauce over cheese. Love that because cheese stays attached and the sauce insulates the slice for a high heat reheat. Crust is a good mix of flop and crunch, thin but not too flabby. Cornicione is kinda non existent and could be better. It's not John's of Bleecker Street, but it's an honest, tasty joint that I'm glad DC has--especially given how new so many of the "best" pizza joints are. A little history goes a long way. Enjoyed the half baked I fired up at home too. Given the "upside down" sauce/cheese arrangement this pie would really stand up to a high heat finish. It was good with my oven topping out at 550, but if you can get higher, do it. read more

While the quality of the food is good enough, the service is rough. The older ladies behind the counter seem bothered if one asks for a number of things in the same order. They want all items ordered at once and then they will fill the order. Fair enough, right? Well, the PERSISTENT problem is that they mixed the order and the customer gets things that were not ordered. Twice we got the wrong kind of olives because they were not paying attention! If this place were budget, I would probably let it go, but the prices are high so I expect better service standards and perhaps a cleaner, nicer store? Is that too much to ask? read more
