Chicago Mini - Spinach & Ricotta
    Kenneth K.

Last Saturday my fiancé and I decided to take an adventure to Ivy City to try Other Half and this pizza place that makes both Chicago and Detroit Styles (as well as New York). We decided so we wouldn't have to wait around to order the pizza to the brewery as we tried their draft menu and two cans. While DC has many great options for beer and pizza, we tried probably our two new top favorites that day in both departments. Even the staff at Other Half told us we would love their pizza and when I called to be sure our order was coming (it was just a reasonable 10 minute delay or so), our delivery guy Joseph asked what table we were at and delivered it right there. So we wouldn't over order we got a Chicago Mini - Spinach & Ricotta, Detroit Mini - Hottie, and a Simple Garden Salad. The price seemed very reasonable for the minis and we even had the salad and two slices of Detroit left to take home. The Chicago style reminded us of Giordano's but probably even better. The Detroit was the best version of it we have had but was extremely spicy, but the beer made it more fun! The salad was very delicious too. We look forward to ordering it again next time we are in the neighborhood, probably as we simultaneously try more beers at Other Half.

DC's best kept secret for pizza. Amazing NYC style, Chicago style, Detroit style pizza and more. Della Barba does it all! Before you go off googling the address, they only take phone calls. If you're in proximity, you will be lucky enough to have these masterpiece of pizzas delivered to you. If you order for pick-up, you'd have to swing by Union Kitchen where these beautiful pies are made. Our favorite has to be the Chicago style, solely because there are barely any other restaurants in the area who can do it just as good as how they do it in Chicago. Huge, meaty, and cheesy!!! If you love pizza, not mediocre pizza, not fake pizza, but love REAL pizza then you must try Della Barba ASAP.

    Chicago Deep Dish!!

THIS!! When I tell you that this joint is like that...it's LIKE THAT!! It's the best, and most expensive, Chicago Deep Dish pizza I've ever had...and I've had authentic Chicago deep dish in Chicago. You can taste the freshness in the sauce and its not overbearing. The veggies on top...just an aesthetic display of what is under that sauce. The cheese on the bottom...not too gooey nor too firm. Two slices of this fork pie...you're done. It was good the next day via heating it up in the stove and surprisingly the microwave (it retained its consistency). This joint hit my pocket though...with all the toppings and tax, the damage for a large Chicago pie is going to be about $50 !! But...if you decide to get a specialty Chicago pie, knock $10 off ( and you WILL have leftovers). Now they do have a personal Chicago Deep Dish for $12...so if the large price deters you, try the personal joint. In the end, it was worth it...fresh ingredients, excellent customer service, I crushed the crust, and had leftovers...I WILL BE BACK!! @dellabarbapizza 1369 N.Y. Ave N.E.. Washington D.C. 20002 If you don't eat the crust on a pizza...you will with this one!! It's a Detroit style pizza with Brick Wisconsin cheese bake on the crust!! Geesh, this joint was awesome, although it was a tad bit pricey ($26 for a large pie with additional toppings at $3 each), it was worth it. They have house made tomato sauce, meatballs and sausage, alongside of a slew of other toppings that include habanero, fresh mozzarella, broccoli, and savory pepperoni!! I needed some more of the fresh sauce on the veggie side of the pizza, and I'm sure they would oblige the next time I order it...yes there will be a next time!! Parking is suspect, via it being a few businesses in the area. The owner Joey, personally delivered the pie via curbside service (due to the pandemic), and had a truly REAL and friendly disposition. Excellent pizza , Great service!! @dellabarbapizza 1369 New York ave., Washington D.C. 20002 **This establishment is Covid Compliant

Absolutely out of this world amazing Chicago pizza. Better than any pizza I have ever had in Chicago! The sausage/spinach deep dish was amazing, definitely going to go back for more

Detroit Pizza - Pepperoni, Ricotta, & Roasted Garlic

Whenever I'm craving pizza in DC, my go-to is Della Barba. I've tried three styles of pizza here: the Detroit, Sicilian, and Deep Dish Chicago. Before ordering the Detroit style from Della Barba, I'd never tried this kind of pizza before. It's like a giant cheez-it with the cheese melted on top to give the pizza a crunchy crust! The sauce, pepperoni, ricotta cheese, and roasted garlic just put it over the top. I grew up near Chicago and I never thought I'd be able to find a deep dish pizza that could compete with those in the city until I found Della Barba. While some may think this pizza initially seems a bit expensive, you should know that this pizza is massive! It can easily feed a family of four dinner and lunch the next day. The amount of cheese and filling in each piece is astonishing. I also have to give a special mention to their meatballs. They make them in house and you can definitely tell that they're of superior quality. Delivery is also fast and easy! Even if the pizza isn't steaming hot when it arrives, it doesn't lose any quality by heating it up for a bit in the oven. Whenever a friend asks me for a local pizza place, Della Barba is always my first mention.

I'm starting off with only three stars because I'm from Detroit, and I'm a diehard Buddy's fan. Therefore I cannot vouch for their Detroit style pizza. The sauce is the last item that goes on top, period. It was decent pizza, but would dare to claim it as Detroit style (yes, I have tried other Detroit styles that are closer) I also tried the Nona "pizza". I'm only putting pizza in quotes because I've never has Nona pizza and didn't know that to expect. It was quiet delicious, but I dare to call it pizza. It was very taste focaccia-ish bread with fresh moz, tomatoes and lots of garlic flavor. Since they don't have a brick a mortar shop, it had it delivered, and it arrived hot and fresh. I will definitely try this place again, since I've lived in both Chicago and New York for many years. Can't wait to compare

Wow wow wow! All the good things you're reading about this place are no joke. We went with the Detroit special with pepperoni, roast garlic and ricotta and added spinach. If you're not familiar with Detroit style (I can't believe I wasn't!) it's baked I'm a rectangular blue steel Pam so the cheese caramelizes on the crust. It's both crunchy and cheesy and parts of it taste like Cheese Itz. It's a really unique style and I have no words for how delicious it is. At first glance, the pizza seems pretty expensive for the size ($28 + any extra toppings + tip + tax) but it's THICK. Hubby and I are both big eaters and we could only polish off two slices each, so we'll have a whole second meal of this! They're offering free delivery right now, so I called and ordered directly from the restaurant. You can place an order to be delivered later, which is what we did. Ours was a little cold when it arrived, but if you slide it on a baking sheet it and pop it in the oven for 5 minutes while you're making a side salad and pouring your beers, I promise it's no worse for the wear.

[Coronavirus Review] So here's an interesting business. They've been running for some time as only takeout and delivery out of Union Kitchen in Ivy City. There's not even a storefront or anything, nor is there online ordering. You call, you literally wait in front of the alley next to the building, and you pick up your pizza (if you're doing takeout). And yes, it's the sort of alley that makes one a tad nervous. Pre-coronavirus, I found this confusing and annoying, and thus I hadn't gotten around to trying this place. But right now we're operating under severe restrictions, which have caused most DC restaurants to shut down or radically change their business model. Except this one. They're pretty much still trucking along; just that now the person bringing out the pizza is wearing gloves and a mask. My understanding is that this place was supposed to move to its own restaurant space on Capitol Hill in the near future, but for right now, they've got the perfect setup. So how's the pizza? They offer a variety of specialized regional pizzas, which makes me a bit of a skeptic; usually specializing in one thing is the way to go. But I had to try their Detroit style and compare it with the other places forwarding this local trend. It's pretty amazing. I ordered a Detroit hottie, and received an extra call to warn me that they were running low on hot peppers and weren't sure if they'd quite have enough, and I said go ahead and make it anyway. If you look at the picture, you'll see that the pizza I received had quite a lot of hot peppers, which tasted like they were added fresh after baking, and were quite powerful. The pizza as a whole was distinctive, with a chewy crust and a ridge of browned cheese running around the side. This was indulgent. I think it beat out the other Detroit style places I've tried here, both of which were plenty good. I also ordered a New York style pizza for variety, getting the pomodoro, a tomato pie with very light cheese to counter my heavier pizza. I wish I hadn't gotten the large, as it was a legit NY large in a box that couldn't possibly fit into a refrigerator. It wasn't as distinctive or anything, but I liked the sauce. One or both pizzas were definitely a bit high on salt; wish they'd dial back a bit. Besides being a takeout only place in a "food incubator", their other limitation is that they only do straight-up gluten and dairy pizza, so people with special dietary needs will want to look elsewhere (and there are a fair amount of gluten-free and vegan pizza options in DC that you can try instead). I wasn't sure that the pizza would be good enough for the price, but I'll get several meals out of it, and those meals will be a great way to spend a quarantine.

First meal we had in D.C. on vacation. After a long drive, it hit the spot! The Detroit Style was new to me. I love Chicago style so this was a good change from the normal New York style we usually eat. It was kind of like a thick, crunchy bread stick covered in cheese and topping. Great flavor all around (for all kinds). Definitely a good choice and I'll gladly get it again next time we're in D.C.

This was my first time getting pizza here after trying once and not realizing where it was located. I live in Falls Church about 30 minutes away. I forgot to bring our pizza bag to keep warm, but pizza is usually good atvany temp. Was scheduled to pick it up at 2:21. Got there about 10 minutes ahead of pick up time. The ingredients were individually of great quality. The amount of toppings was good for the price for meats. $3 for the jalapeños is about double what you recieve. We called and pizzas came out exactly at the promised time. When handed the pizza I felt it was odd that the pizza box was not hot. I should have checked better. While I imagine hot, these pizzas are good, I cant justify $80 for two pizzas. There wasn't much of a chance I was going to be a regular due to the distance and price, I was really hoping this would have been good enough to be an occasional treat.

Pizza was sooooooo delicious!! I really loved the sauce and crust, especially all the cheesy bits on the edges. This is my 2nd time having Detroit pizza so I'm not an expert on this type of pizza but I loved it. There was a bit of confusion with the guy who answered the phone (maybe he was new?). We asked for the pepperoni ricotta Detroit pizza which was listed on the specials page of the website and at first he didn't get what we were asking for. Also, he told us the price would be $38, not $28 as listed on the site. So there might be a delivery fee but it's unclear. The delivery driver has a card reader so you pay with credit card which is super convenient. Definitely ordering again!

So I was thrilled when one opened up in Hyattsville, not far from where I live. My partner and I have been there many times over the past few years and have always enjoyed it. But we were flabbergasted by our most recent experience. The food is as good as it ever was, but the value just isn't there. We were in on a Wednesday night and noticed a table sign for a special: two large pies and two appetizers for $60, so we ordered that. We each had one drink as well, and split a dessert. The bill came to over double that amount! We have paid less when eating in fine dining establishments. Why was our bill so high? Two main reasons: first because the upcharge for an additional topping is $4 each. I would expect that for fancy meat or cheese, but we only added red onion slices. Onions are one of the cheapest things in the supermarket, and $8 will buy a lot of onions. But I guess that's on us for not noticing that all additional toppings are the same (high!) price. Also, PP automatically adds a 20% charge in lieu of a tip. I have mixed feelings about that (and about the increases in tip culture in general). Our service was fine but not exceptional. Sadly, we will think hard before returning to PP. There are many other good pizza places out there.

My last critique is for a place this popular that makes so much money, I feel that their food packaging is awful. They usually give two slices in one flimsy paper like pizza box and it's just very difficult to carry. Surely, there's a better container system for something like that, or they can put one slice in each container. As I mentioned, I also ordered the wings recently and I also felt that container was super flimsy. It just feels cheap and as most people are taking out of this location, I think there could be better packaging for to go orders.
