This is fifth time in a row our pizzas have come with practically no cheese - and with the non-GF pizza not even having proper sauce. With the gluten free pizza we even paid for extra cheese the past two times (including what's pictured here), and still been skimped. It was my first time visiting the Walter Reed location. There was an event occuring nearby and they encouraged folks to try the pizza. The pizza was good, and I was pleasantly surprised bu the Detroit pizza. Unfortunately, the staff seemed very stressed, unfriendly and as though they weren't getting along. Hopefully, they will work through this but it made the experience less than what I;d hoped for. They should put signs on the pizzas so that people know what they are ordering. Gluten Free Friends. This is it, this is the holy grail of gluten free pizza. This is what pizza tastes like! I know it's been years, and we have accepted card board pizza crust and convinced ourselves over all these years that it tastes good....... But today, my friend... You will taste what real pizza is again! I need them to open up a new location, right next to my house, so I can eat there everyday. My only, slight complaint, is the tomato sauce is tangy... I passed by this place so many times during my walks and wanted to fall in love with the pizza so bad, so I'd have something to reward myself with on my takeout days. While the pizza was okay, it didn't knock my socks off. I went on a really hot day and it was pretty hot in there. Not sure if that's how it typically is but I mostly felt bad that the employees had to endure that type of heat along with the running ovens. I got a slice of the Detroit pepperoni. It was fine, just didn't really taste very fresh, which I get to an extent since it is from the slice section. Also got the famous burrata slice but it was too soupy for me. The slice that's a collab with Federalist Pig is my absolute favorite - I it's got Federalist Pig's brisket, smoked mozzarella, and dollops of garlic cream sauce. It's insanity. Their classic slices are all top-notch, but this creation is something special. When I judge pizza, I look at a few factors. The crust, the sauce-cheese ratio, the sauce flavor, the toppings selection and quality. The pizza at Slice & Pie hit all the checkmarks. A crispy exterior, but when you bite in, the center is still soft and doughy. No flop when you hold it up. The sauce-to-cheese ratio is nice, and the sauce itself is perfectly balanced. Not overly acidic or awfully sweet. Service It's a slice shop. You walk up to the counter, you order, you get your slice. That's pretty much it. Nothing to complain about, nothing particularly noteworthy either. Ambiance There's not much seating. It's a small corner spot. You're probably eating your slice standing at one of the standing tables or outside the storefront. Wasn't here for ambiance tbh. Assessment It's the best slice in DC when eaten at the restaurant. Always happy a slice shop is in the area. I'm from NJ so I have a deep passion for pizza. It's pretty good overall and most definitely a pickup spot (there are a few tables). The grandma slices remind me a lot of L&B Spumoni Gardens which is great. Sandwiches were fine. I prefer the pizza. This was my first visit, I'd dropped in for a quick bite because it was in the right spot on my way home, & the sign piqued my curiosity. I was hoping to see a pie / slice with a little bit of green - veg on it, but since they didn't have any of that I was waffling between the burrata and what turned out to be the Sicilian. I was visually perusing and reading everything and looking inquisitive as one often does on a first visit, in addition to asking questions based on the poor /nonexistent signage. I pointed & asked what ingredients were in one pie & he said "you want the Sicilian?" rather abruptly. There was no language barrier. So it was awkward having to ask him *again* what was in the pizza. He provided no explanations or recommendations, just silence and watching me vacantly while I struggled to make a choice... again, because the pizzas weren't labeled or apparent on the awkwardly positioned menu screens high up on the ceiling directly above the pizza. I didn't notice the menu screen until just after I asked for the pizza I pointed to but couldn't name -since there were neither labels nor words coming from his mouth. When I started to read the menu directly above me, "croquettes" caught my eye. And I said "oh I didn't notice those up there right above my head." We ordered the burrata slice (Cali tomato sauce, mozzarella, fresh burrata, basil, Parmesan) mushroom slice (Parmesan cream, mozzarella, mushroom, garlic, truffle oil, parsley), Detroit style slice (tomato sauce, mozzarella, provolone, hot honey, pepperoni), and truffle fries. I appreciated how thin and crispy the burrata and mushroom slices were. The slice of burrata pizza was a bit too salty, and could've used more tomato sauce. The slice of mushroom pizza was quite unflavorful, which was disappointing. The Detroit style slice was also underwhelming, and the slices of pepperoni weren't even crispy. Each slice was $5.50. The truffle fries were also very mid, they weren't even crispy and didn't even taste like truffle. The fries honestly tasted like cafeteria fries. Overall, pretty disappointing experience with the pizza and service. The space inside is very small, but has eclectic decor. Given our experience, I'm not too inclined to come back. Second only to Andy's for NY style pizza in DC. Love that it is actually set up and looks like a standard NY pizzeria. Quick and to the point counter service as well. Prices for a slice are way above that of a regular slice in NYC, however, but supply meet demand I guess. Last time I was there I ordered a cheese pie for takeout and even looking at it, you can tell they're doing a good job with the style! I should note they also make solid Detroit style pizza, which you won't see attempted in NYC. Refund me then recharge me. While this is going on I'm getting a call from a lady who found my number on the receipt telling me my pizza is at her house and to come get it. I wasn't unable to leave and I received over 20 calls/text from the lady who didn't know what to do with the pizzas. All while I had a house of screaming hungry kids who then had to go to bed late because this situation took them 2 hours to figure out. We ended up ordering Dominos who delivered very quickly.
