My experience wit Vace has been mixed, but in the end I want to award them four stars after all. Let me explain: I was looking for someone to cater for a party at our office. Having just recently returned from a biking trip through Italy, I was on the lookout to recreate some of those food memories and so my Yelp search lead me to Vace. I saw that several of my colleagues had reviewed this place in the past and so I was confident that at least from a taste-point-of-view, I was on the right track. But then I also read in other reviews that many people comment on the (perceived) rudeness of the staff and I would soon encounter that myself: calling the business, I would never have a friendly voice answering the phone. Everyone always seemed to be bothered by me, when in fact I think I just took them away from dealing with clients at the actual store. Eventually I got to speak to Diana, who is in charge of catering and she was able to take my catering order. I placed an order of various focaccias with her as well as multiple lasagna (spinach, meat) and eggplant parmigiana. Overall, an order in the magnitude of close to $1000. Technically, they don't do "catering" in the sense that they come to your office/event and set up everything. They usually only prepare the foods and then you'll have to re-heat it in your own oven. (Great for a house party.) But Diana was very accommodating and they prepared the food just in time and it arrived hot at our office. I am a big proponent of ordering delicious food from great local businesses and I don't mind going the route of calling a business to place an order. However, if you want a seamless ordering process with web interface and all, don't try Vace...that's not what they're all about. I knew that going through a bit of ordering hoops was worth my time when a colleague afterwards thanked me for bringing in food from Vace. I feel bad for the 4-star review, since this is my husband's favorite pizza spot in DC, BUT it is my review after all! This is a great little Italian deli/pizza shop; apparently they have been in this location for 40 years, and I know they are adored by many! It's takeout only, and often gets very crowded, so my recommendation is to call ahead! Ok, so why not a 5-star review? I don't like this style of pizza where the red sauce is on top of the cheese and all other toppings. Also, the red sauce is way too sour for me taste. I will say that I LOVE their white pizza; olive oil sauce, plenty of cheese and onions (it also comes wth spinach). This is old-fashioned pizza and it's very good. As a former waiter who helped put myself through college waiting tables, I love to tip and appreciate a good effort, and am hurt by those who give food workers a bad name. What isn't good at Vace is the dreadful service and the face of the franchise is a very sullen young woman who takes all the orders. After a very negative earlier experience with Vace, I decided to give them another chance and came in with my kids to pick up a takeout pizza to watch the game. By the way, I searched Vace's reviews for the word, "rude," and mine is the 43rd review, and not even counting all the synonyms for rude. What could possibly go wrong? I ordered a large plain and foolishly tipped upfront and she told me, "15 minutes," so 15 minutes later she comes out with a steaming large plain pizza [mine] and instead of giving it to me she puts it along with the other pizzas by the slice. Wow, she really did that! It took about 30 minutes to get my "15 minute" pizza and, of course, in the interim nobody ordered a slice of plain pizza. This review is based on eating Vace pepperoni pizza at a recent party I attended. The pizza was on the thinner side and more NY style, which I haven't had in forever and is strangely hard to find in DC. I loved the pepperoni so much I asked the host of the party about where he got the pizza from to buy it again for parties I may host in the future. If you're in Cleveland Park and looking for pizza, you're better off getting it at the 7-11. UGH! I've gotten pizza from Vace for years and am accustomed to the rudeness of the staff and the light hand with the cheese -- but this has gotten ridiculous! When I got home, I discovered that, on an entire pie that was half-cheese, half-pepperoni/black olive, there was ONE blob of cheese. When I called to complain, the manager (?) offered to make a new one but only after he said "we put our cheese underneath the sauce." UH no - checked before I called - no cheese underneath the sauce. And no thanks - Not going to wait ANOTHER 45 minutes for that. It was so horrible that I took the pizza back to the store the next day (yes, I did that). I asked for a manager and one of the cashiers just looked at me blankly. "I had to say "Do you have a manager? I'd like to speak to them." as if a customer complaining was something new. The other, ruder cashier came over and she knew exactly who I was and what I was complaining about, but offered no solutions and no apologies. I've been going to Vace at both locations for years. Easily some of the best pizza in DC. Service is a little shaky, not consistent. I'm not sure how I feel about the italian sandwiches. It appears they are premade which I am not a fan of, I guess it helps save time but I wish they were freshly made instead. I haven't tried the meatball sub yet because I have heard way too many horror stories about them unfortunately. I love their fresh and frozen pasta, the sauces and frozen lasagna! very very good for frozen. i thought about trying the frozen meatballs to bake or add to sauce on my own but haven't just yet. my go to pizza is a pepperoni pizza with crumbled meatball on half - delicious!!! definitely call your pizza order ahead of time, they get super busy! also, their fresh pizza freezes well! i froze a couple slices and enjoyed a couple of weeks later. read more

My job ordered in Vace's pizza for the end of the fiscal year last week and it was pretty solid pizza. I really liked the white cheese pizza. I was slightly thrown off by the tomato sauce pizza but discovered that it had a cheese layer UNDER the sauce which was a little unconventional, but still pretty solid. The slices were huge and if you eat two you can be pretty satisfied and left smiling. I realize takeout is a different experience than going to the venue and eating the pizza hot, so I would love to try this place out and get some hot fresh pizza. read more

I am picking up a food order and they forced me to write down everything on the order instead of them writing it down, or entering into a machine. This is during the COVID pandemic. This may be the best pizza in DC. Pizza in the DC area is/was generally a culinary disaster...there was never a Little Italy in this city and boy does it show. As soon as you walk in it just smells right. That old school Italian pizza place vibe is immediate. The pizza is crisp but flexible, stood up to the sauce, but is not at all dry. The sauce isn't overpowering and give a subtle sweetness and hint of herb. They were delicious! read more

Vace is like that easygoing attractive neighborhood guy I used to hook up with who was really nice, reliable, tasted great, wasn't annoyingly pompous, and left me feeling pretty fortunate in life whenever we hung out. That's how I feel about the pizza here. So why did it end? Well, I moved out of the neighborhood, way across town. At least that's why it largely ended with Vace (not the dude). Vace is a neighborhood institution. When I lived in Cleveland Park, Monday night was "Vace night." Vace was never just plain old "pizza night." No, no. Vace has this going for it: * Simple, slightly smoky, chewy pie crusts (not too thin, and not too thick) with delicious red sauce * Tasty focaccia sandwiches (get 'em early, they get snatched up before noon) * TOP NOTCH pre-made frozen pastas for your freezer (or for more immediate cooking), perfectly delicious with just some good olive oil and fresh parmesan. Maybe on a bed of spinach. * A modest selection of other basic Italian goodies, like wine, sauce, frozen dough, cookies, etc. * No-nonsense Italian ladies who have worked there for years and years. They do not chit chat. But they will give you good food. * GREAT VALUE! It's like 14 bucks a pie! If you like spinach on pizza, try their spinach/red sauce/cheese pie. It is sublime. Serve with fresh grated parm and olive oil for the crust. And red wine. Duh. Order by phone well in advance. If they say it'll be a 40 minute wait, it will be. Is it perfect? Nah. Vace was on my radar because a friend said their pizza was better than Timber. After recently having Timber for the first time and being a lover of pizza, I was down to try Vace. Vace being a market and a deli counter, there is no seating to maximize space. That's cool, just get your food to-go and head over to Macomb Recreation Center or Melvin Hazen Park on one of the many bikeshare options in the District. Like I said, it is a market with lots of Italian foodstuffs. I peeped cheeses and pastas but they were of no real interest to me. I love pizza but I'm not really well-versed in Italian fare. I got more out of the many drinks offered. Cipriani Bellini, Stappino and San Pellegrino Chinotto. The Cipriani Bellini I had was my least favorite. The Stappino came in a cute, lil bottle and had an interesting taste worth trying out. The San Pellegrino Chinotto was my favorite. It also having an interesting flavor, I guess that is why I haven't seen it in cans anywhere like the other San Pellegrino flavors which are everywhere. They also have a bottle opener at the register too so check your drink first before you dip. Another thing that I found cool about Vace was the the many Southern Cone products. They got you on Alfajores, Dulce de Luche (también tiene lo de Café Havanna), Yerba and even Bombillas. Now, I came for the pizza and ended up eating my two slices and coming back for a third. I tried the Cheese and Onion, Cheese and Spinach and finally a plain Cheese slice. I liked them all so I won't go into favorites. Nice thin crust, sizable slices, good stuff. I truly enjoyed Vace prefer it over &pizza et. al. p.d. They wrap single slices in aluminum foil. It's good pizza so just go head get a whole one and they'll put it in a box. read more

I came home and opened up the box to discover a visibly smaller pizza that was missing toppings. Naturally I paid for the toppings and the large pizza.
