It's in an unassuming shopping center so if you blink you'll miss it. Here's what I tried: Day 1 plate 1: Ahi steak with bomb sauce- I don't know what they put in that sauce but holy moly it's good! There's a lot of garlic in this one so if you're shy of garlic, you may want to try something else. The Ahi steak was good but the sauce on top of the rice sets it off! Day 1 plate 2: Special# 2- My fellow yelpers, I could cut the New York steak with a plastic fork! It was that tender! It also comes with chicken Katsu which was amazing as well. Day 2 plate 1: Special #1 with New York steak and wing dings. I already told you about how good the steak is, order it medium and it comes out kind of medium well which I didn't mind. Here's my tip-GET THE WING DINGS with this plate. They're like little tempura battered wings that taste like they were made in heaven! For real! It also comes with mahi mahi which was nothing short of equally amazing! Day 2 plate 2- Bacon burger. That's right, a bacon burger. I don't think I've ever rated a hamburger but I have to this time. Classic Hawaiian Diner Plate Lunches and Specials. However, in addition to the Hawaii Classics, they have a "UPSCALE" Menu with High End products but with Plate Lunch prices. With the menu of mostly under $20 with a few exceptions, it is a great place for a quick bite to grab for yourself or a few friends. Parking can be Tight. With several businesses around the place, parking can be a hit or miss. I missed the first driveway for diagonal parking in the front, however you drive around the block if you want to park diagonally, if not you can park perpendicular to the restaurant but have other shops around you. I pulled right upfront to see the Menu from my Driver's Seat. However, I saw the Classic Menu. If you want to see the "Upscale" Menu you need to walk up and look to the far Right to see the Picture I took. ToGolden Rule for the Cashiers: Treat them Nice/Polite, they will be Nice/Polite to you. I picked the Ahi with Bomb Sauce, which was Delicious. I can't remember the flavor because I ate it up. However, there are a few Whole Roasted Garlic cloves so be Warned! And for all you local folks, they have Green River. Ordering on the phone will keep you from having to wait a long time. Parking is convenient, located right in front of the ordering window. They also have a few outside seats. The food... The mochiko chicken is good. It wasn't overcooked and tasted like it was made with fresh oil. The mac salad was not great and was actually kind of watery. The garlic ahi was really good, especially with a side of Bomb Sauce. It wasn't the biggest cut of ahi, but it was cooked just right--moist and delicious with tender cooked cloves of garlic. The plate comes with asparagus and tossed greens with a yummy house dressing. The rib eye loco moco is surprisingly good. I usually don't get any steak in a plate lunch style container because I don't want to cut it with plastic utensils, but this one wasn't bad to cut. I love me some garlic, so I was very happy with the garlic ahi steak plate. The garlic was cooked to perfection; soft in texture, and no bite to the flavor. I tried some bomb sauce on the side and that was also delicious. The mochiko chicken was everything it should be as well. Tasty, crispy, and cut into bite-size pieces. Finally, I tried the fried rice pork adobo when it was on special and was pleasantly surprised with the amount of pork. No garlic flavor whatsoever.. no salt, pepper, etc... My husband ordered the smoke meat plate and it definitely wasn't the smoke meat we're used to.. we're originally from Hilo so maybe Oahu does smoke meat differently...‍ My kids had burgers and fries and they were okay. I was craving steak and wanted to try another place then my normal go to place. This place is maybe a minute closer to my house then my normal go to place. The garlic NEW YORK steak was nice and tender but wasn't what I really hoped for. The steak was nicely presented compared to most bbq drive inns but I feel like it was missing something. It comes with a garlic paste but not so garlicky as expected. I'm more of a plain salt and pepper steak with real garlic cloves on it. Service was a bit slow but doable as long as it's not busy. After a super fun night out at Scarlet, my friends and I began to feel those 2am cravings. To our surprise, nothing else was open that late/early in the morning that was nearby except for Diners by Upscale. I've always wanted to try them out and thank goodness their bright, white business sign also says open 24 hours on it. We zoomed our way to Kalihi--safely of course. It was 2a and there was a hefty line to order food. What are people doing up this early? LOL Diner's gives me an old school late night grind feel in terms of their menu being straight to the point and their venue just being a big window to order food from and brick booth looking tables scattered around the side. Whatever craving you're having, whether it be seafood, plate lunch, something big or something small, you will be satisfied by something on Diner's menu. While there were a lot of options, my hunger was originally steering me towards ordering one of their bento combinations. A bento is a safe bet when it comes to a new place, considering it will be filled of a bunch of things. However, I was glad that my wandering eyes got to the big, blown up pictures of what the plate lunches looked like. I'm a visual learner. There were such seductive looking seafood plate lunches hung up on one of the glass panels next to the ordering window. Among the pictures, was this Ahi Katsu that looked like a deep fried sushi roll. Smothered on top of the ahi katsu was their special bomb sauce. That was it for me. I ordered the Ai Katsu Roll Plate with no hesitation. Large water. The wait was a bit long, granted there were a bunch of people in front of us. Though the tables on the side of Diners may be in need of some cleaning, again, it was the perfect "just-went-out-for-the-night-and-just-need-something-to-eat" vibe. When we got the plate, I'm pretty sure I heard angels singing as I saw what was in the picture in real life right in front of me. Crunchy. Soft. Warm. Magnificent. Savory. It was everything right for a party-girl like me that night. My friends who were with me had ordered other comfort meals on the menu like the loco moco, the saimin, or the crinkle cut fries. The menu is quite extensive but during the later hours of the night- they do run out of popular items. Sometimes, late at night, I'll go through 3-4 different orders before landing on something that I want that they still have in stock. But hey, you really can't be too picky about food past 10pm. The wait time can be around 15-25 minutes and parking can be an issue during their lunch and late night rush. They serve local delicacies like fried poke, ahi katsu, longinsa for breakfast, and meat jun. The menu is really extensive, and can be a bit overwhelming- I highly suggest looking over the menu before getting there. All entries, in true local fashion, come with 2 scoops of rice and mac salad. Last time I came here, I ordered the chicken katsu and it was perfectly crispy and fresh. We also ordered their meat jun and fried poke. No complaints from anyone, this is a solid plate lunch spot. This place is a Diamond in the rough. Absolutely enormous menu with prices that are unbelievable. We stopped in around 3 on a weekday and we're the only ones here. We ordered the garlic ahi with asparagus plate and garlic steak and shrimp plate. Both came out in about 15 minutes. Both were massive portions, have garlic butter on both, and two large scoops of rice. These were both well under $20/piece. They had a chicken plate on sale for the day for $10- I don't even know how they do it with these prices. Not only that; they are open 24 hours!!! I usually love the food here. But lately it's been not so good! Ordered our food and people who ordered after us with steak plates got their food before us and we ordered kalbi short ribs and salmon asparagus. After waiting 25 min my rice and kalbi were cold and my wife's food was somewhat warm. We also asked for crispy fries and seen it was in the order for crispy fries on their paying machine and we got regular fries not crispy. Alright, first of all, before we head over here, we literally just landed to Hawaii and was STARVING and I had this place book marked for a very long time just in case it was late and we wanted to actually get good food and not fast food. She just walks away to the back and place your food on the other counter, we didn't get her name but she aint playing with your slowness, it's listen and go or no food for you. I placed an order online due to the wait times and the distance from where we live. the online order also gave us a time to pickup, they actually started making the order at the time they said it would be ready. in the ordering part of the beluga app, on the bottom of each menu item, there is a space to customize the item - not one customization was followed and we did not get our drinks. we have done the same customization in person before, so we know it can be done. all four plates on the order had a customization and a drink and nothing was correct. i tried to call and no one answers and you can't even leave a message. read more

Lady taking my order first and last time i went was rude , the food really had no flavor, and they are pretty expensive. But they are one of the only places open 24 hrs so that's a plus i guess. Really disappointed because this place is a Kalihi staple but the food wasn't it every-time I gave it a chance. One thing I ordered was the Garlic NY Steak and presentation was really good until I took a bite. I really didn't want to believe how bad it was but the steak was VERY tough just like rubber I had to throw the whole plate away! I will say, even though this food is takeout only it is not fast food so be prepared to wait a little. Since this is the only diner/drive inn open really late in the surrounding area, it's not as important to have the best service and efficiency, and I think they realize that. Last night, we ordered a breakfast plate, burger, and fries and waited for 35-40 minutes and we were one of the first. 11 parties who ordered after us received their food (sometimes 4-5 plate lunches) before we did. The front staff kept calling back for fries and the rest of our food was just sitting on the counter cooling off for 15-20 minutes waiting on FRIES. There was one other party that ordered around the same time we did were vocal about the wait times and the employees weren't phased nor apologetic for the excessive delays. Until another restaurant is open late in this area, I guess we'll have to continue dealing with subpar service and mediocre food (if I'd known the fries would be soft and soggy, I would've taken what was ready and left). If you have no other options and are in Kalihi hungry, then I'm sorry, but this is where you'll have to go. But if you're coming from elsewhere, find a different restaurant. read more

When we got our food and took it home the chicken katsu was hard and old like it's been sitting out for a few hours.
