This was my third time eating at/food from Forty Niner, and I was really hoping that my review would get better with time. I would say that Forty Niner is a great place to get the bang for your buck in terms of pricing for their food, but I will say that the quality of the food isn't as great as it's presented on their ordering site, Beluga. Today, my husband and I chose to do takeout and ordered three things: The Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, Chorizo Hash, and the Molokai Loco Moco. For the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, the lemon taste was pretty concentrated in the middle of the pancake/not well distributed and we couldn't really taste the ricotta flavor, but it was pleasantly sweet (not too sweet). For the Chorizo Hash, I was a little bit sad that it wasn't very flavorful and the Chorizo wasn't well cooked. The Molokai Loco Moco's flavor receives the same review as the Chorizo Hash; although it was special/the first time we'd had Loco Moco like that, it was pretty soggy/watery and lacked flavor. The food itself in my opinion gets a 3.5/5, but because they were timely and friendly as a staff, I'm bumping our review up to a 4! P.S: This location is in the corner of a neighborhood street and Kam Hwy and the parking is pretty small/limited!
Haven't been for a while so decided to have breakfast here. 5 booths and a 6 seater table inside and you have the option to scan the QR code at your table. 5 tables outside on the patio. Staff is the best, ordered with Anjelica at the front window and went inside through the back to get our drinks and sit inside. Hapa pancakes and dirty hash loco moco was our order today and it did not disappoint our cravings.
Excellent customer service! The young woman that took our order was really nice and helpful, and patient with us as we asked about the menu. Customer service on its own was 5 stars. We ended up getting a corned beef hash and eggs plate with hash browns, side scrambled eggs with a side of rice, and a forty niner breakfast (Portuguese Sausage, eggs and fried rice). The corned beef hash was a little too sweet for me, but it was perfectly cooked! My eggs and hash browns were also perfectly cooked. My granddaughters eggs were a little too soft scrambled so I shared my eggs with her since mine were scrambled well. My husband's Portuguese Sausage and eggs were perfectly cooked but his rice was on the softer side.
Hole in da wall goodness right here. Located along kam highway passing the stadium and Dixie grill but immediately before 711 prior to pearlridge. They have a small gravel parking lot and some outdoor seating as well. Always pass this diner in traffic to and from work. Had a day off and fiance suggested we try here for breakfast. We didnt sit in but chose to take it home. Something we need to do again because the food was so ono! They have written specials and a wide range menu from breakfast, bunch, and lunch. We came on a Friday morning and service was quick! We walked up to the window and ordered right away. Had the strawberry guava sweet bread French toast, ube waffles and fried chicken, cornbeef patty loco moco, cheeseburger and side of fries. Brah. Everything was good! Ive never had this spin of strawberry Guava sweet bread French toast before, also topped with fresh strawberries! Ube waffles was ono! But since it was in the container on our drive home. The waffles became a bit soggy since there was no air circulation, the flavor and fried chicken was on point though! Their spin on the loco moco is one you have to try for a fulfilling and tasty experience. Fries were so crispy and fresh! Just needed to add a pinch of salt. Cheeseburger was pretty good too. Our order took no longer than 15-20 min. Cant wait to come back to try more food!
We all ordered the same burger. Double cheese burger deluxe with dirty sauce The Grilled Apostle: 6/10 Ordered the double cheeseburger deluxe with dirty sauce from Forty Niner Restaurant. It looked huge and inviting. The burger itself tasted good as it was cooked with bread mixed in it to make it soft but once you started eating it, the burger fell apart. The bun was thin so it was messy as the sauce and burger started falling out and you needed a lot of napkins. Some people like it messy but it's not my thing. The onions and pickles were a perfect match. Too much American cheese. ________________________________________________ The Premium Purists: 5/10 I was looking forward to trying the burger at Forty Niners and hoped it would be an old fashioned/traditional style deluxe burger. It definitely had the look and right toppings but the patty was a little disappointing. After my first two bites the patties crumbled into pieces and the texture seemed off. It was too mushy and lacked good beef flavor. After learning they mix breadcrumbs in their burger patty, I think the patties I got were not mixed well and the ratio of beef and breadcrumb was off. That is probably why the texture was off, it lacked beef flavor, and crumbled. I would honestly give it another try and go with a single patty. ________________________________________________ The stack analyst: 7/10 Tried the double cheeseburger(dirty style) at 49ers and it was delicious. The fried pickles were the highlight for me. I love fried pickles and they worked really well on the burger. They also didn't hold back on the caramelized onions, which added flavor. The burger had four slices of cheese, so it was definitely rich. The patty had a nice sear on the outside, it did fall apart though. I would've liked a little more salt, but I know that comes down to preference. Bun was nothing special, just your standard setup, but it got the job done. I'd definitely come back and order it again! ________________________________________________ Double stack daddy: 6/10 The burger had a solid foundation, but it was missing flavor and could've used more seasoning. The biggest downside was the bun--it fell apart after the first bite, making the rest of the meal messy. Not a bad burger, but it didn't stand out, and there's definitely room for improvement. ________________________________________________ Bruddah big buns: 4/10 Da patty was mushy. ________________________________________________ Captain messy hands, keeper of the drip: 8/10 I found a winner! This fresh, hand-formed double cheeseburger delivered exactly what I look for--thick, juicy patties with the drip. Every bite was messy, flavorful, and napkin-worthy. It started falling apart halfway through, but that's a compliment in my book. Nothing fancy, just an honest burger executed right. This is the kind of burger that keeps you coming back. 49er diner has been a pleasant surprise on our trip to Oahu. We've been to tons of diners and drive ins, this place feels just as much of a local spot as you can get. Prices are fair and foods great. Ordered (1x) "49er breakfast" Portuguese sausage, 2 eggs, a fried rice plate and (1x) of the Mac nut pancakes. Split the plates with the wife and I and the total was ~$21.00. Everything was amazing, food super filling, and staff was friendly. Ordered via the app, they have QR codes on the tables for easy service.
The Forty Niner Restaurant in Aiea, Honolulu, is an exceptional experience. It is for anyone who wants to experience really local cuisine. Opened in 1947, the Forty Niner offers a selection of local fairs like saimin , loco moco, furikake salmon, taro sweetbread French toast and hamburgers for the less adventurous. The service is mixed - place your order at the front counter and wait at a table for service. But, the staff is wonderful. Ambiance? The Forty Niner is in a small building that has about 7 or 8 tables inside and a few more on the back patio. It has a simple, local atmosphere. But, it is on our list of places we try to get to every time we are in Hawaii.
I've heard so many great things about 49er restaurants and I have attempted to come on many occasions, but the parking always threw me off. Today was not that day. They have a small lot at the back off the main road with free parking which is always a plus. This no frills diner greets you with a friendly face, easy order options and solid grindz. Prices are also so reasonable which blows my mind. I got an egg cheeseburger, which was good but the homemade patty could've used a little kick. My macaroni salad was a solid portion and also very simple and even better with a touch of salt. My friend got the pancakes which she loved and the breakfast sausages hit the spot. It feels like your friendly neighborhood diner to roll into and i love the backyard seating I'll definitely return when in the area to try some other items off the menu.
Walk up window makes it easy and fast to order. Seating in/out, it's up to you. Random fact: they have ice coffee. Staff is nice, food is plenty and quick
Super good garlic chicken It comes with a salad with amazing Asian salad dressing. We also got the Loco Moco and there was nothing wrong with it and it was as good as it could be, but we were just trying it for the 1st time to try it. It's not something we would normally order and would probably not get again. I would eat that chicken all day!
Opened in 1947, yes, 1947! Forty Niner restaurant has been serving up amazing local food. Their plate lunch is in know island wide. But for me it's their breakfast! The Paniolu breakfast (Hawaiian cowboy) 10oz big island grass fed ribeye with 3 large eggs over fried rice SLAMS! Another standout is the corned beef hash and eggs. Simple potatoes and corned beef, cooked to perfection. Crispy outside the soft in the middle. Paired the ketchup is another home run! Service is always impeccable. Since Covid changed dine in policy where you have to our outside then find a seat. Love this place
This is an old time restaurant and favorite that we used to go to with my parents and now with our children and grand children. They still haven't changed the quality of the food with old time favorites and good friendly service and family feeling. Me and my wife had the Teriyaki sandwich and the regular size Saimin combo which was delicious and the broth was tasty and the teriyaki beef was very tender and tasty. Our grand daughter had the regular Saimin and hamburger combo and she said it was very good and ate everything. Parking is unpaved and just dirt parking lot all the until you enter the outside seating area, it would be a little difficult if you had a walker or wheelchair because of the unevenness, but not impossible to try the food at this great old time restaurant. You can get a seat and scan the QR code and place your order and they will bring your order to the table or call out your name to give you your order. The waitress was very nice you can order water from her or buy bottle water and she also cleans the table once the customers leave. They have one restroom between the outside & inside dining room and it is one for men or woman. Been awhile eating here and looking forward to trying other old time favorite that they serve.
First off let me just say that my pictures are off! I was probably hungry. The bento was very satisfying! The quality of the proteins was very good. Everything was freshly made. Beef cutlet was interesting but not what we expected. It was thin sliced beef in gravy. It was yummy but not fried and breaded. Spaghetti Mac salad was kinda tasteless. I would go back again. Price was very reasonable.
Loved this place! Stopped by here on our way to Wet and Wild water park and glad we did. We ordered a loco moco, salmon belly with fried rice, and a breakfast burrito. Everything tasted almost perfect. No complaints whatsoever. We all agreed that this was probably the best loco moco we've ever had. Service was good too. Our cashier was nice and the food came out at a decent pace. We ate outside in the outdoor seating area. It was comfortable with chickens walking around which I thought was pretty funny lol. I got the dirty hash loco moco after we heard this place was good. It was good, but just a normal good loco moco. There wasn't anything particularly special about it. I feel like there's gotta be an even better one around here somewhere. read more

Then head around to the back to enter for dine-in. EXTERIOR: have I believe 5 large picnic table style seating. They will bring your food to you. WAIT TIME: no more than 10 mins between placing to receiving entire order. PARKING: free lot n' street OVERALL COMMENTS: you get the good local mom n' pop feel. Prices are nice n' portions are huge. Their Loco Moco is a great comfort food. Perfectly cooked sunny side up eggs, rich n' savory gravy & patty. Forty Niner Pancakes were fluffy n' smothered with the haupia macnut sauce. We used to pass this restaurant and they always had a long line outside. We did an order through yelp because we were anticipating it would be busy. When we got to the parking lot, it was pretty busy, there were people waiting outside. We decided to wait in the car in the parking lot. I kept looking at the notifications on yelp but it was more than 25 minutes, almost 30. My Husband decided to go in and check on the order and it was there, waiting. Maybe I shouldn't order through yelp anymore. After we got our order, they still didn't update the app after we had already picked up our food. My husband tried the smoked meat breakfast plate with over easy eggs, and I had the kalua pork with lomi salmon with scrambled eggs. Both plates were upgraded with fried rice. Stopped by for brunch after visiting the swap meet. Place was busy! We had tried the chicken n ube waffles, dirty loco moco, and garlic chicken. Everything was delicious and definitely plenty of food. Service was awesome and the ladies kept checking in on us. read more
Food was overall good. The building itself looks a little run down but don't let that scare you from trying it. Bacon was really good, a bit salty but I think it added to the overall flavor. Had the ube waffles and they were awesome. Worth a try if you're touring the area and never been. Had been recommended to come by some locals. read more
Ok, this is my initial visit to Forty Niner Restaurant...even though I am local born and raised. This establishment is considered a local landmark for food....so shame on me. Firstly, I don't have reason to visit the Pearlridge area unless I am going to Down to Earth, Pearl Kai Center, or Pearlridge Center. Secondly, whenthe building is painted yellow and there's red lettering of "Forty Niner" at the top - and I'm a Patriots fan - not enthusiastic about making a visit unless hangry. I requested the Forty Niner Loco Moco ( eggs, over easy ) for takeaway. It was good. Many plate lunch eateries over season their food but this was, if anything, borderline bland...a good thing as you can always add but not remove. The Molokai roast pork was the star of the plate...winnahs. Parking is adjacent to the restaurant, with a unpaved lot. I patked at the 711 on the corner. read more

With ono local classics and reasonable prices, it's easy to see why Forty Niner has been a favorite for decades. A friend and I shared the forty niner pancakes (banana mac nut pancakes smothered in haupia sauce ), he got the dirty hash loco moco (loco moco with corned beef hash, and their dirty sauce), and I got the forty niner breakfast burrito (fried rice, kalua pig, egg, grilled onion, sour cream). The burrito was good, and even better with tobasco sauce, which made me wish it came with pico de gallo or salsa or something... The burrito has a lot of comforting, albeit heavy flavors, and could use something bright and spicy to lift it up. It was still really good though. I had a bite of my friend's loco moco - so good with the dirty sauce. I have no idea what it is exactly, but it's creamy, tangy, and slightly spicy, and brings something bright to the dish. And my favorite: the forty niner pancakes! They were incredible: big, fluffy pancakes with the banana cooked inside so it gets all caramelized. The haupia sauce is so good - it's not too sweet, and the mac nuts on top bring a perfect crunch. Great combination of flavors and textures. The portions for all the dishes were very generous, with reasonable prices. The space itself has both indoor and outdoor seating (with shade). We sat outside, under a mango tree, and there were cute lights strung up over the tables. There is parking right next to the restaurant, which is convenient, and a bathroom for customers to use. read more

Ordered their rib eye steak with onions and mushrooms. This was a bit tough and overcooked. Also ordered their fried noodles which bit on salty side. I prefer their brekkie plates here. It could have been an off day. read more
It is one of my favorite places for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and sometimes dinner (when I can make it). I usually get the Aloha Box, which has Short ribs (Kalbi) and Garlic Chicken ($16.95). I have the picture for Adobo Fried Rice Omelete ($12.95) because that is what I tried for the first time! Delicious!!! I always take it home or eat it in the car, but there is a space inside and outside as well Bad: - Be careful when exiting the restaurant from the parking lot. Good: - It has a good parking space unless an influx of people visits simultaneously. - Fantastic staff and delicious food that I will never get tired of eating. The seasoning is perfect, and the grilling is on point as well! - Reasonable pricing with an adequate serving size. Conclusion: My go-to restaurant! I always tell my friends to visit when they come to Hawaii, especially when heading to the North Shore area or even the Dole Plantation. read more

I called & placed an order but the girl hung up on me. I called back & it would ring three times then hang up. Once I was finally able to get my order through, I came to pick it up & it was wrong. We passed this restaurant many times but hadn't stopped because the road fronting it is pretty busy due to the stop lights and traffic. We're happy we decided to give it a try. I've been here three times since then. There's a large gravel parking lot. Orders are taken at the front corner outside. Then if you're dining in, you can sit down inside or outside and they bring your food to you. They also do takeout orders. The outside area has several picnic tables and a large mango tree shading the area. The prices are super reasonable and the food is delicious. I have only ordered the forty niner breakfast so far, which comes with fried rice. The fried rice flavor and amount of pieces of meat is consistent. Table service is provided outside, serving water and coffee. The staff is super friendly. read more

Great plate lunches & breakfast stuff. Roast pork Molokai style is delicious and tender. I normally like mix greens, but their mac salad made with spaghetti noodle is great. We normally order takeout as seating area is in covered patio. Fried noodle with side chicken or teriyaki beef is good too. read more

I recommend this place mostly for breakfast had the fried rice it was great tasty perfect! Real thick slice of bacon eggs however you want it and we tried the Leilani French toast with blueberries that was OK. I would get all of it again. Quick place for breakfast plates along with indoor outdoor seating if you're gonna have brunch with friends or family. read more

We ordered a chicken and waffles plate, there were 2 pieces of chicken and the rest was just skin. There was no chicken in the 'chicken'. I ordered a dirty moco and it was good, I ended up getting really sick and couldn't eat after that. I was all night. read more

Wow! Five star place for sure! Food 5/5 we had the breakfast burrito- also don't know what it's called, but it had spam, egg and fried rice Pancakes- don't know name the cashier just said they were her favorite, but they were 2 pancakes, topped with bacon, banana, peanut butter and syrup. The combination was insane! Service 5/5 The reason for not knowing the name of the food is because I have the tendency to ask who's taking the order what is the most popular, what's their favorite, or what they recommend- I usually listen, nod and say -- yes, that one.
