Place is really small with only 4 tables, but they put it all in to go boxes - so we brought ours home. They were relatively busy on a Friday morning, and could tell it was a lot of regulars. When the day comes to leave the island, my Dad always requests local food. Living in Oahu, it's something I took for granted but now crave occasionally in California. Knowing this, my unnie Li Y. took us to a local spot near the airport--Joe's Grill Express. This is a very small local joint. Lots of locals and occasional tourists stop in for a quick meal. We came for breakfast on Monday and many customers came in and out. The restaurant is small and can get warm (no AC), a few tables are scattered so it's mostly communal seating. The workers were all so kind, checking in on us and accommodating us! Brittany was so sweet and we had fun talking story with her. Our food came out hot and fast. My Dad, a loco moco lover, had the Mini Loco Moco. Unnie had an omelet and got us Ube French Toast to share. I got the Mini Plate with spam and over-easy eggs. I upgraded to fried rice. Honestly, it tasted how it should. Crispy and savory spam, nice runny eggs, and hearty fried rice. Mini portions are always enough for two meals--I was so full but couldn't finish everything. The Ube French Toast was good, light on the ube, sweet, and moist bread. We enjoyed it all. Joe's Grill Express is a convention place for local food near the airport. Who woulda thunk that great food is in an airport industrial area? I was headed to the gas station near the car rental return, having ended a short business trip on Oahu. On the way there, I decided to take a spin in the Airport Commercial Center where one of my all-time favorite restaurants once stood. Joe's Grill Express piqued my interest, so I went inside. So many choices! I was torn, but luckily you can get a combo plate and choose two dishes from a list. The desserts looked yummy, but I couldn't inhale all of that before returning my car and getting to my gate. Opted for the chicken cutlets (yummy brown gravy!) and furikake chicken. Generous portions, friendly family-owned business. The food is extra delicious when you support local. They open early, so they close early. The menu is extensive. They offer daily specials and tons of local and international options. I was here for some breakfast. It's just a small business with a few tables. The young girl told me to take my time since they had a lot to choose from. I got the big breakfast, 2 eggs, with spam and portuguese sausage and upgraded to fried rice. Me: Which do you suggest, ube French toast or haupia pancakes She: Haupia pancakes....I don't like ube LOL! Haupia pancakes it is! They have a cozy dining room, enough for 14 people. I took a large table in the corner, and the girl said it was alright. Lots of people coming in for take out. The only thing I didn't care for was the Coffeemate creamer. Joe's is a staple in breakfast and lunch fare. Solid food, reliable quality, and all served by the best, most friendly folk! For my kids and me, the mini breakfast is our go to order. Fried rice, scrambled eggs (sometimes egg whites for my daughter), and lil smokies. I once tried getting a regular size and there is a definite, measurable difference in quantity! We also really love the biscuits and gravy (eggs over easy) with hot links and the haupia pancakes! For lunch, I usually get a cheeseburger and fries or baked spaghetti if they have it. I also love the pia dina (not offered every day). What IS offered every day is a rotating speciality menu! So many things! Sometimes roast turkey, sometimes Hawaiian plate, sometimes empotido and eggs, sometimes squid guidado, sometimes fried pork chops - and anything in between; you just have to check IG or stop in. But no matter what you get, the portion is sizable, the quality is fantastic, and the people who get it to you are just the kindest, most pleasant people around. Reminiscent of old skool type restaurant. So seating is very minimum. But you know the food will be good lol! So simple yet so good. Wanted a quick breakfast spot and nearby and saw the amount of great reviews this place had so wanted to try it out myself. Don't expect to come here with a large group unless you are ordering to go. It's not located near any tourist locations except near the airport. Lots of parking in their lot. Food came out pretty quick (maybe about 15-20 mins wait) and it was hot! We ordered the Uber french toast and the mini breakfast (Portuguese sausage eggs and rice). The mini breakfast was still fulfilling and the meat itself was really good, juicy with flavor. The Ube French toast stole the show. The bread was fluffy enough, basic French toast but it's the Ube sauce that is the STAR. Very creamy but not cavity sweet. We ate our meal within 10 mins...that's how good it was! Wow! My family and I were amazed by the delicious flavors at Joe's Grill Express. Located roughly 3-5 mins away from the airport, Joe's came in clutch for a quick bite before dropping my brother off at the airport. We arrived around 11:00am and, luckily, got a table so we could dine in. Be warned, the place is a bit cramped inside and the AC could use a few cranks up, but it was still a cozy spot to enjoy our meal. They even allow you to use their restroom which is located in the back of the house. Not the most visually appealing, but it was stocked with the essentials and got the job done. The menu is filled with a bunch of breakfast & local plate lunch options, but I'm so glad I asked for the specials of the day! Although there were a few regular menu dishes I wanted to try, the special of the day, Ahi Katsu $15.00, sounded better. Oh man... it was so good! Very simple, but flavor-wise, it was exactly what I was hoping for. The Ahi Katsu Special was served with 2 scoops rice (white or brown), toss or mac salad, and a good portion of crispy fried (med-well) ahi katsu drizzled with wasabi mayo. My brother ordered a mini Sesame Garlic Chicken and we all stole a piece lol. That was delicious as well! Super crispy and juicy, with a light hint of sweetness and nice flavor of garlic. None of us sensed the sesame other than the seed garnish, but it was perfect the way it was. I'd definitely order that the next time we stop by. Son ordered the Pork Adobo Fried Rice with Eggs. It's not served as the well-known omelette wrap style, it's just 2 eggs on the side of the fried rice with big cubes of adobo. My son said he really appreciated the vinegar flavor and it was different from any other adobo he's had. He gave it 5 stars tho! He also said "Wow! What a deal! This was only $12 mom!" Hahaha!! :D And lastly, my wife got the Longanisa Breakfast with Rice & 2 Eggs your way. After picking up more snacks to eat my husband decided we go and have a sandwich. So since we're in the area we traveled to get the sandwich but unfortunately they were close today. So end up at this place. I chose the mini roast pork plate and my husband chose mini fried chicken. Came home since this place had limited seating like 4 small tables which some were already taken. I thought my plate had a good taste gravy wise the pork was part tender at certain places and the Mac salad had lots of mayonnaise in taste. The pork had some kind of spice taste which I can't pinned point it out. I think it's oregano or sage. The fried chicken had crispy skin but still could have been salted more in my opinion before they fried it.
