Ive been searching for good drive-in's before our trip to O'ahu and seen Mark's on social media. They are known for their generous portions and ono plate lunches. So we tried the usual suspects of Bbq chicken and katsu plate, oyster sauce chicken over cake noodle, garlic chicken plate, cheeseburger, friesand fruit punch ($60 to feed 5 hungry ppl & leftovers! Yo, that Oyster Sauce Chicken is like my "C.R.A.C.K.!" Lol! I've been on a Shoyu Chicken/Oyster Sauce Chicken binge as of late, and Mark's Drive Inn has been feeding my crack cravings! You can get this dish with noodles, cake noodles, or your standard two scoops rice & mac salad. Either way you get 'em, no can go wrong! The Oyster Sauce Chicken comes out hot, with a nice crispy skin, and gravy all ovah! I've been getting my fix with noodles as of late, but I must tell you if you do get this plate......be ready to eat, as the portions are more than generous! Of course Mark's Drive Inn serves an array of items, but I guess I'm a creature of habit, and know what I like. Nothing wrong with that, no??? Service here is on point, as the folks are friendly, and will bring out the food to you once your meal is ready. Ordered two lunch plates that I saw the reviews on Yelp of their Garlic Fried Chicken and chicken tonkatsu plate that are generous with their portions. Indeed portions are enough for two. I tried calling in but their phone kept ringing until hung up so I drove there to to place my order. Yes, their portions are generous for the garlic fried chicken. If it's karaage it'll be a different taste and coating fried chicken which I miss so much after my return here. I could make it but I've retired to cooking . On Tuesday, 11/26/24, at 11:30a I stopped by at Mark's Drive Inn to pick up lunch. I ordered the Beef with Bittermelon plate lunch. It came with 2 scoops of rice and a Mac salad. The Bittermelon was cooked perfectly with a crisp vegetable crunch and covered with a savory black bean sauce. The delectable beef married well with the stir fried combination. Although this place is small, there are some seats if you need to eat inside. Overall, this is a great place to pick up something quick to eat. I've been here before because Bruddah Fran said that his friend's Garlic fried Chicken smelled good and was boneless... haha... even though Bruddah Fran had the oyster sauce chicken. Most people were doing takeout. After I parked for free in the shared lot, I went in and looked at the picture menu and the Specials board. I didn't see the Garlic Fried Chicken, so the nice lady pointed it out to me. I told her that my friend said that the Garlic Fried Chicken was really good. I almost got the Beef Tomato, but she said many people get the Garlic Fried Chicken. Okay, I'll try it! That's what I ordered. It sounded like the nice lady was arguing with the kitchen staff, but that's how Chinese language is. It's loud and "straight to the point". I didn't understand a word, but I knew they weren't fighting. LOL! When I got my order, I told her, "See you again!" She just laughed. At home, I happily chomped on the tasty, crunchy chicken skin! The outer layer of meat was cooked well, and the inner meat was moist and tender. I didn't eat much of the rice, but I did try the macaroni salad - it was on the watery side. The mayonnaise was kind of diluted. I'll be back to try other dishes (my mom would like bittermelon beef) and ask for that cake noodle that's not on the menu... Note: I did pay cash. I have been here before but never remembered to put in a review. I concentrated on the Chinese dishes this time as I have been looking for a Gon Lo Mein like I could get at the now closed House of Dragon in Pearl City. While Mark's version is different ( thick noodles, no egg), it tasted pretty good with good wok hei flavor. This one is the closest to what I'm looking for with its drier-style noodles (not covered in gravy). The Oyster Sauce Chicken was so flavorful and plentiful. We also ordered the Sweet and Sour Spareribs which was plentiful and has good flavor, but some of the pieces were a bit tough. Probably another 15-20 minutes of cooking would have helped. I have to say the place was packed when we went at 11:30 on a Saturday and parking was tight, although lots of parking under the freeway if you don't mind walking a bit. I belong to this FB group that posts ono food around the island and a number of people kept posting food from Mark's. I couldn't wait to give them a try! I drove out from Waikiki, ordered the lemon chicken and waited in the small cozy dining room. I guess you can eat inside if you like. The friendly woman shouted "mushroom chicken? mushroom chicken?" looking over at me. I told her I ordered lemon chicken. She admitted she made a mistake, and I think was going to have the kitchen make the lemon, but I took the mushroom because I was hungry. It was very good! Food has been consistent, prices have always been affordable and their service has always been right on time, I don't think I've ever waited more than 5 minutes when a phone order was place. Marks is always great for cheap eats. Oyster sauce chicken, the mushroom chicken and the cold ginger chicken is my tops. If you order cold ginger chicken ask for extra sauce, of course they charge a little bit extra but its worth it especially when you see how massive the pieces are! More meat than bones which is a plus always. Mushroom chicken has a lot of musroom and a lot of onions and chicken. Oyster sauce chicken plate is a massive and tasty. It's good. They do have fried rice on the menu but it's blocked by the altar. No worry, you guys never miss anything about that fried rice. Last night half the family was gone to a Celebration of Life for the son of a friend so there was just me and Wes home and neither one of us wanted to cook dinner. Asking what he was in the mood for I told him to choose using the "I'll buy if you fly" adage so I didn't have to change from slippers or leave the comfort of my living room. Careful consideration on his part lol "I didn't eat a Mark's this past week" he said I'll have the Minute Chicken from Mark's down the hill. Interesting enough, in all the years I've lived in Aiea...35 to be exact, I've never been to Mark's Drive In. I've been to nearly every other business, restaurant, drive thru in that little place known as Stadium Mall but never here. Looking at the menu I was surprised at the menu and the prices, guessing they survived the price increases by sheer volume because their prices are dollars below other places of the same type. Wes got his takeout of Minute chicken on Cake Noodles and I ordered the Oyster Sauce Chicken on Cake Noodles. Wes drove down the hill at 8:00 PM and picked up the phone order and was back in ten minutes with two takeout boxes weighing at least two and a half pounds each. This business is definitely one of quantity over quality and an attraction to local plate lunch lovers of the two scoop rice plates. I've passed them at lunch with guys waiting outside to get their orders. They have all the local favorites at three to five dollars less than the town places. Not sure how they do it but I'm giving them 3 stars for food, 4 stars for service and 5 stars for pricing. read more
