I tried going here a couple of years ago and ended up at one of the places a couple doors down. I was starving and didn't even bother looking at the sign. The food was good but I had my heart set on Penny's. And as I was driving away, I saw it and just laughed. This time, I knew where it was so no mistakes. She has a lot to choose from. But I wanted breakfast and ordered the regular corned beef hash with two eggs scrambled and I asked if I could have the fried rice with it. No problem. I liked the individually wrapped fork with smiling grapes. It's those little things that make places like Penny's very down to earth and like being at someone's house. I didn't have to wait long. And it was ready! There's a small dining room and I ate there. The patties were nice and crispy! But the fried rice was delicious! Sooooo good! Everything was perfect! I was so full when I was done! I ordered a Hamburger Curry Plate. The cashier thought I said Hamburger ( only ) but I noticed it on my Apple Pay receipt. I should've just kept to the burger order, which was quite good. It had an old school flavor: like it was beef mixed with eggs and ( maybe ) pork. The ketchup and mustard combination was reminiscent of a McD's burger. SORELY DISAPPOINTED! For years, I'd heard and read about Penny's Drive In on Yelp, so I was excited to finally try it. Aunty said they could make me a Pork Adobo Fried Rice Omelette which immediately brought back memories of the generous plate at the old Alonzo's at Mililani Golf Course. Unfortunately, Penny's portion was SUPER minimal and lightweight--a mini container with barely a quarter cup of pork adobo sitting ON TOP of the rice and two small scrambled eggs sitting on the adobo--definitely NOT an omelette! The flavor was just OK, and I know my adobo. Although I'm aware profit margins for any restaurant is small, I won't be back. Breakfast in Kalihi, Honolulu, Hawai'i... I saw Deborah and Gabriel check in at this local eatery and wanted to check it out... Penny's Drive In isn't open on weekends nor during dinner hours. I'm guessing that their customers would be working people who want hearty, convenient, comfort food type of Breakfasts and lunches. There's free parking right in front of the shop. Inside, there was a small dining area (hardly any air-conditioning) with St. Patrick's Day decorations... I liked it! Service was very friendly and efficient. I was offered a choice of rice, mac salad, or tossed salad. Then, choice of dressing for my green salad. Also, the nice cashier asked if I'd like some pickled onions... okay! (They were on the savory side... not the sweet style... FYI...) At first, I didn't see Roast Pork on the menu... then I looked up on the wall behind the cashier... yay... the regular menu even had hamburger Steak! Ahhh... next time! Pickup a fried chicken wings plate today. It came with 6 pieces of chicken wings mac salad and rice. It was nice and crisp. How ever the wings was overwhelmed with salt. After you order then you go to the other side to pick up. Came home and we ate my breakfast was ok breakfast is breakfast the Portuguese sausage was 5 pieces and the eggs were cooked good over easy yolk was nice and running. Went by their good reviews & was close to Sand Island Road,easy to find, parking limited in areas fronting drive in. Once inside, nice menu items,breakfast starting @ 5am and pau @ 10am & running thru lunch, closes @ 1:30 pm. Looking for the best Hamburger steak plate in Hawaii , went with their reviews & ordered that with a small salt less fries. You can dine in, they have about seating for about 12 no a/c , so was pretty warm. I suggest going to the near by beach park. They serve Coke products. Hamburger steak regular plate was $ 14.50 Side of chopped onions in a small ramekin, White rice & Mac salad. The steak & gravy was good , but I know of 2 other Oahu eatery's that do it better.Fries were hot & excellent& both portions were value good. The two fisted culinary oasis between Sand Island and Nimitz Hwy. Along Sand Island Access Road you will pass strip mall type businesses which have many places to eat, primarily order and dash. You'll see a lot of trucks pulling into front parking areas, too big for the stalls so parked along side the road for a quick getaway. Pennys has been in business since 1965 and has been serving this area for over 50 years. When in the area it was always a given that we would check out Pennys for local grinds to eat immediately or for latets. They serve typical plate lunch fare, but my go to selection is always their beef stew. A generous portion with the right mix of goodies, just enough meat, and the stew gravy just the right consistency. Couple that with toss instead of mac and you have a somewhat balanced meal that is really good. Don't forget to ask for pickled onions-mmmmm. Regarding parking, because trucks park along the road, it's probably a good idea to reverse into a parking stall. If a large rig happens to park along the road, might have a hard time backing out. Note: the stew meat can be a little tough, but usually nice and tender. My only regret is that they are not open on the weekends. When you want your Pennys fix on a Saturday or Sunday you'll have to suck it up and wait till the weekday. read more

cute hole in the wall in sand island. i like how they are pretty festive with their decorations for Halloween. there is a few parking stalls out front - and i think 2 of them was dedicated to just pennys. they take cash or card with a small fee. ordering is simple through the first window at the entrance. there is some kind of PA system so they can hear you through the glass. all of the worders were really friendly. pickup is at the next window at towards the exit, but they don't want you to block the area so just move aside. There is a few bar tables and sit down tables in this back corner if you decide to eat there. I ordered the hamburger deluxe for 5.50, beef stew bowl no rice for $9, and then a saimin $5. the hamburger was the best. beef stew could have been better if the meat was softer, and the saimin noodles was soggy - maybe because it was already in the soup and not separated. the saimin bowl was also leaking from the top lid. otherwise, the food is ok, but not something i would go out of my way for again. read more

This place is pretty small but since we went during Halloween it was very festive with all the Halloween decorations. The lady that help us was nice and very easy to talk to they do have a PA type of system for when you order and for pick up so you can hear them very clearly. So on to the food I had the regular breakfast with corn beef hash with fried rice and over easy eggs and my friend had their roast pork with Mac salad and pickled onions with white rice. The food is excellent I usually get roast pork bomb, but today I wanted Mahi with fries and I was so happy the best Mahi n crispy fries this was recent March 12, 2024. Usually this is my husbands favorite Mahi with rice n salad but for some reason I wanted fish n chips the fish was tender the fries absolutely tasted great n crispy best ever. (Body by Penny's), LOL. When food is good somewhere, you remember and map out the quickest driving route. Meat is so tender and seasoned right. The brown gravy is not the regular brown gravy. It's waaaaaayyyyy BETTER!!!! I usually order a side to take home and smother rice or mashed potatoes with it. The mac salad is so great! It's orangish color due to the carrots. It's simply wonderful and compliments the roast beef/roast pork oh so well. Most of the plate lunch items are available @ 6:30am, but breakfast items are nothing to turn a nose up at. Fried rice is the bomb and the bacon is light and crisp. Scrambled eggs are done up right and actually scrambled, not laid out flat and folded. I hate that! (I may have ordered it as a fluffy scramble) The Hamburger, whether it be in a plate lunch, hamburger steak, or in a burger form w/lettuce and tomatoes on a bun, it's the bomb! Homemade patties are nicely seasoned and is soft and juicy. Not dry and hard. Blech! I just hate that! Paired with a bag 'o fries, you got yourself the happiest little lunch! An issue I encountered when going to Penny's is the parking. There are 4 stalls that face Mauka on the Makai side of the diner, and about a dozen stalls fronting Penny's and what used to be "Dirty Dan's" or "Dancers", (I think). Large 18 wheelers will park on the shoulder of the road fronting the diner, so one may have  to do some serious maneuvering of the car to get out the parking stall. Hubby, daughter and myself came here to get food since my daughter gets off at 12:30, so hubby got her a pork cutlet mini plate with a medium Dr. Pepper. It's a small hole in the wall place. No dine in due to covid which is what the sign says. I totally believe that covid isn't gone yet even though they lifted the mask rule on the island. We took her food to a park and she enjoyed her food although she complained of the soda tasting weird but she drank most of her soda. I have to come back to try food here and it's CASH only here so make sure you bring cash. Such a negative for me cause I don't carry cash lol but there's an ATM machine inside for your use.
