Crab Stuff Ahi Roll and Spicy Poke
Jerome M.

I been coming here for years and can't believe I didn't make a review. If you know, you know. Crab stuffed Ahi is a must. Poke always fresh and reasonably priced. Only street parking and take out only but that doesn't stop anyone from getting those crab stuffed ahi fix. Highly recommend!!!

Fresh case and they have salad dressing!!!

This place is always awesome. You may have to wait a bit but so worth it! We've been coming here for years and hopefully can keep coming back.

Monarch Seafoods located on the corner of Kalihi and Colburn Streets. Known for their Crabmeat Stuffed Ahi and Banana Cream Pie . The Monarch Bento is equally impressive and delicious. They were sampling a new offering Mahi-mahi Tempura. Oh my I wish we had known before we ordered. But oh well that'll be a good excuse to go back next time. Take out only. Call ahead and order. Gotta take along a "Shotgun " rider to jump off and pick up the food. Very limited street parking . Hopefully you'll be lucky enough to get to try their Banana Cream Pie . Creamy full of bananas and sinfully delicious .

Crab stuffed ahi no wasabi all salad w/ extra dressing and a side order of a half pound spicy ahi. Service is always quick. Food is always delicious. Nice little spot on the corner. You can't miss it. Call in your order or walk-in, service is quick. The fish is always fresh! I definitely recommend you trying this place 10 out of 10.

This place is conveniently located right down the road from work so it's a perfect splurge for lunch when we got time. I love that you'll always see the same cashier, cooks, & mama's there. It's like a family. I appreciate how the fish is always fresh and they make the poke in small batches to guarantee the freshness. The food here is really good too. My kids love their mochiko chicken. Light on the batter & lots of meat. The stuffed crabbed ahi is good too. Rolled with crab and ahi, then deep fried, is a really yummy treat to have. The service here isn't bad. But do expect it to always be busy, so be patient! Calling in your order ahead of time does help especially during lunch rush. Parking is limited, so be cautious because it is a busy street especially with the rail project going on.

I've driven past Monarch Foods dozens of times and really never noticed this place. I thought it was just a fish market. Wow, was I wrong LOL. I first came here years ago. A friend of mine brought me here for lunch. They serve the freshest poke as well as a daily plate lunch menu. By now, I've tried most on the menu, and they've never missed. If this is your first time, my go to is always the Nori Wrapped Crabmeat Stuffed Ahi. It is always a winner! My second "go to" would be the Ahi Katsu. It is not your typical chicken or tonkatsu katsu dish fried all the way. It is more of a seared ahi so although the outside appears crunchy, the inside is still raw. It is served with a shoyu wasabi sauce. Yummy! All plate lunches are served with fresh tossed salad. Parking is a bit challenging. Except for maybe two stalls on the side, they don't really have parking, it is mostly street parking on Curtis Street. There is no parking on Kalihi Street, and you can't park right out front on Kalihi Street either because there is a bus stop right there in front. There are a lot of businesses close by so be sure not to park anywhere or your car may be towed. Farthest I've parked was on Curtis Street almost to Foodland a block away. But for their food, the walk was worth it!

Nothing but aloha in both their service and food. Ono poke and ono grinds! I expected the prices to be a bit higher for the ono food they served, but nope they decide to keep their prices down so you can buy not one but two maybe three plates instead . After a good day of holo holo this is definitely some comfort food with a twist you would expect to come home to. Best part we were blessed with a gift on our way out. Blessings and aloha to Monarch Seafoods.

It's rare for me to be able to try these kinds of places because they're not open late on the weekends when I'm off. I had an opportunity to try them so I called in my order and the lady who answered was very kind and said my order would be ready right away. Pickup was hassle free. Workers were nice and there was a steady flow of customers coming in and out. Crabcake- standard Crab stuffed ahi- okay, a little dried. Not sure if it was supposed to come with a sauce but we ended up dipping it in the spicy mayo that came with the crab cake Ahi katsu- would get again but eat it sooner lol. Comes with a wasabi soy Spicy poke- very mild in taste but fresh

Love this place! I always suggest to phone order a head! Makes it easier because parking is pretty hard to get. It is street parking and it does get busy! The food is very good, Poke is fresh. I absolutely love their mochiko chicken! So I would usually get the combo with mochiko chicken and fried poke. Super good. Their nalo greens and that dressing is seriously the best and the greens are always usually fresh. Their stuffed crab roll is also really good I always ask for extra creamy wasabi sauce! The workers here are pretty fast with taking orders and usually are always nice and friendly! Small inside but quality food!

Our super visor treated us lunch from here!! I haven't gone to this place for over 10 years... Crab cakes and salad dressing are still good!

Are there any tables outdoors to eat at?

No, it's a grab and go place. But so worth it. I don't mind eating in my car... the fresh poke & plate lunches are so delicious!

There are two sections to Nico's - a take out are where you can order poke, poke bowls, Hawaiian food, as well as fresh fish; also available are beer in a cooler and wine. I ordered the special ultimate poke bowl (three fish selection) and it's amazing where there is more poke than rice! My sister's choice was also tasty. As we were checking out, the young cashier stated we could eat next door in the restaurant - wow, a pleasant surprise. It was during lunch so the restaurant was busy, but we found a seat. What's goes great with great fresh poke? Great fresh poke + beer, which was available at the bar! A great combination. Located off of Nimitz, Nico's is located on the far end of a converted warehouse, close to the pier, park and walk. It's worth visiting.

(2/5) The burger - the patties had too much filling and not enough "burger". I got the side salad instead of fries and it's just green leaf lettuce, a little wilted, withe house dressing, and the dressing is not great. Desert slices are small and cost 8.50-13.00 (go down the road to Liliha Bakery instead) Vanilla Caramel Crunch cake - there wasn't a real "crunch" and the caramel layer in the top is way too thick. Chocolate cake - too dense Mango cheesecake - too tart

Spoke with the gentleman running the counter and he told us to go to the adjacent seafood monger (same company) and pick your fish. They have all kinds to pick from including shrimp, clams and oysters. Some fish are better suited for steaming versus deep frying. For the most part deep fried fish is delicious but most fish deep fried will lose its fresh taste. The monger said the Onaga fish will have a firm texture when steamed. Once you pick the fish they take it back to the kitchen to prepare it. Pricing is based on the fish per pound and then they add on $10-$20 for the preparation. We got the shrimp dumplings, black bean spareribs, beef look fun, Shanghai pork dumplings, steamed salted egg custard buns, pan fried turnip cake, seafood bean curd roll, sesame balls with red bean, taro puffs and chicken dumplings. Everything was on point except the sesame balls with red bean. They were small and the breading was thick. Pass on those. My tip would be to order more nigiri, as the rolls/hand rolls are made with a lot of rice. Very filling. Loved the miso soup! The service was good. Everyone is super friendly! The EXPERIENCE however was terrible. I've been to Ahi & Vegetable many times prior to moving and have always enjoyed their bowls, however, It was my first time trying their AYCE sushi. I'll start with the good. I enjoyed the poke bowl and crunch roll. The menu didn't offer a lot of options and many options costed extra per order. It was an interesting set up. They give the table 1 laminated menu and a pen. The table has to decide how much of each item they want and write it in. Apparently the menus are numbered according to table which is how they keep track of orders. They do warn you that they charge for food not eaten. There were no instructions on how to order or a check in of who has been there before. We came hungry so we ordered. Our orders took a long time to come. One of our tables didn't even get their order which makes me think their ordering system failed. Our food comes out but not all of it. They hand back the menus. We order again. Again it takes a while, but dishes sporadically come out and they keep handing the menus back. All of a sudden all these plates are coming out, some I swear we didn't order. We are trying to keep up, the finished dishes are piling up because the staff gave up bussing tables. I kept track of my personal orders and noticed the orders were duplicated and they were bringing out food we didn't order. The lady tried to bring the menu out but the math wasn't "mathing". There were bowls already in take out containers as opposed to the dine in bowls in earlier orders. This signals an expectation to take out. FYI dry erase can easily be changed by staff. Anyway we ended up with a ton of unfinished food and had to pay extra. I had to take home food no one ordered. It was a mess. I want to blame our large party, but my other coworker was there the same night with just her husband and even they were being handed food they never ordered. Do I think their system is a scam to get you to pay more? Absolutely. Would I go there for AYCE again? Absolutely not. Would I take out a small order? Perhaps.

I just wished there was a bit more white onion for crunch, but it was good regardless. The Fish and Chips were really good. The fish was super crispy, the meat was firm, and the fries were nicely fried. The tartar sauce or maybe more of a lemony aioli, was the star. It wasn't your usual tartar sauce; it had a homemade lemony sweetness that made it delicious. My only complaint was that the batter came off the fish pretty easily, which made it a bit tricky to eat at times.
