Wow never knew about this place...A hidden gem in the middle of kalihi. Drove by here often and always thought it was just a fish market. Located on the corner of kalhi street and colburn (right across popeyes). A small unassuming door on the corner of the building is the storefront. I used to see a line but never knew but now I know its a pretty good choice to get quality poke..hawaiian plates...furukake salmon..kalua pig etc. The menu is not much more than that but that only means the limited Selections are prepared well. Prices are not cheap nor expensive but manageable for this day and time. The insides is just a small area to stand and an ordering counter not a place to sit and eat its all take out. The staff ( I am told he was the owner) was very cool and even offered us some of their smoked salmom dip and a cracker (killer dip!) I've seen this spot a few times on social media and decided to come by. They have a very small store front, with street parking and no seating, it is a quick grab and go spot. We decided to go with one order of the pan fried kukui nut crusted ahi belly plate, a side order of stuffed ahi & one large crab cake. After ordering we stood outside to not take up the limited space within when new patrons would arrive. * The panfried kukui nut crusted belly was food, my friend ate majority of it and he said the ahi tasted fresh. * Stuffed Ahi, this was alright, I think if there were some kind sauce on top (like spicy mayo, unagi, etc) it would be better. I think they put a tiny strip of sauce (wasabi) on top (the tiny green?). I wish there would be a more even proportion of ahi and crab, it felt like there were more crab than ahi, and I think it was imitation crab? * Crab Cake: I actually liked this quite a lot, the crab cake itself was pretty flavorful and has different fine veggies within. I haven't been back here since the mid-2000s, so it was to my surprise how much has changed inside and the lack of poke and banana cream pie displayed on the ice filled counter. The mission was to finally get my crab stuffed ahi. I came the day before and it was closed even though Yelp said it was open. It's fine though, at least my husband and I were able to try again. I've driven past Monarch Foods dozens of times and really never noticed this place. I thought it was just a fish market. Wow, was I wrong LOL. I first came here years ago. A friend of mine brought me here for lunch. They serve the freshest poke as well as a daily plate lunch menu. By now, I've tried most on the menu, and they've never missed. If this is your first time, my go to is always the Nori Wrapped Crabmeat Stuffed Ahi. It is always a winner! My second "go to" would be the Ahi Katsu. It is not your typical chicken or tonkatsu katsu dish fried all the way. It is more of a seared ahi so although the outside appears crunchy, the inside is still raw. It is served with a shoyu wasabi sauce. Yummy! All plate lunches are served with fresh tossed salad. Parking is a bit challenging. Except for maybe two stalls on the side, they don't really have parking, it is mostly street parking on Curtis Street. There is no parking on Kalihi Street, and you can't park right out front on Kalihi Street either because there is a bus stop right there in front. There are a lot of businesses close by so be sure not to park anywhere or your car may be towed. Farthest I've parked was on Curtis Street almost to Foodland a block away. Love this place! I always suggest to phone order a head! Makes it easier because parking is pretty hard to get. It is street parking and it does get busy! The food is very good, Poke is fresh. I absolutely love their mochiko chicken! So I would usually get the combo with mochiko chicken and fried poke. Super good. Tuna is rare, crispy on the outside, and the flavor of the seaweed complements the tuna! The wasabi sauce is poured over the cutlet for an even better taste. But be carefulThe wasabi sauce is soy sauce based, but the amount of wasabi in it is hard to guess from the color, and I was giving myself plenty of leeway, but when I ate the cutlet with the sauce on it, I fainted from the spiciness of it! I'm not too sure if you would call Monarch Seafood a hidden gem because if you're local, you just know that Monarch is bomb!! The most popular dish here is the crab stuffed ahi. It's ahi stuffed with crab, rolled in nori and deep fried, then topped with a creamy wasabi sauce. It is soooo good and hits the spot EVERYTIME. It does come with fresh greens and the house made dressing is so good too. Monarch also has fresh poke offerings as well. My favorite is the spicy ahi without the mayo. Easily one of my top favorite spicy ahi pokes on island. I'm sure there's a lot more to offer on Monarchs menu but for me, it's one of those places where the staples just keep you coming back for that each time. Heads up, parking is tight around here. Similarly, for me, a plate lunch is not complete without an absolute banger mac salad. You need that contrasting element with the hot/salty/crunch/etc. of the main dish. And the potato/mac salad from Monarch is a straight winner. Cool and creamy, with an explosion of texture. Plus, they give a ton, which I very much appreciate. Got there at 1030, no line. Ahi Katsu no rice, all salad, was perfect with extra dressing. Clean, organized and friendly.

- Hawaiian plate: the luau in the lau lau was so juicy but the meat inside was dry and no salt. I drowned the kalua pig in shoyu too. They don't give aloha shoyu either they give some off brand. My scoop of rice was from the bottom of the rice cooker and it was all brown and hard. I didn't get it w lomi salmon so no feedback on that. - poke bowl: my coworker got this one. See attached photo. I love their poke here, so when a drug rep said they're bringing lunch from here I'm definitely getting their poke. Poke is fresh always. And from a price stand point it's affordable. The poke salad was $13ish so I was able to get a side order of crab cake. They give dressing for the salad but I usually don't use it since there's already lots of flavor coming from the poke. I do like that they give shoyu mustard on the side because I like to dip my poke in that every now and then. I was kind of disappointed with the crab cake. I got a large side order but it look like the regular size, and this time it didn't really have much flavor so I dipped it in the shoyu mustard instead. It's a must stop when in Kalihi. read more

After a visit to OCCC (work related), we stopped to grab lunch here. There's no sign whatsoever on the outside so it's like an underground establishment locals only. We had someone wait in the car parked right in front while we went in. There is absolutely no parking here so you need to plan accordingly. The food was good, but my furikake salmon was pretty small and thin. Only 1 side is encrusted with furikake too. Looking at other people's plates who got the crab nori ahi, my piece of fish was less than half what they got for $13. We got a Hawaiian plate which was huge and heavy for the same price. read more
