Whenever I am having a craving for okazuya I think of Gulick. While okazuya is never cheap, Gulick tends to be on the higher side... for good reason. Their food is memorably delicious! Quality ingredients used. Delicious food created. Efficient service provided with a smile, even when there are lines behind. The ladies at Gulick are always pleasant. And even though I always end up buying more than I intended to, I always leave happier than when I arrived. Parking for Gulick in the small lot or on the residential street. Opened in 1984, the Takara Family established Gulick Delicatessen in Kalihi and is still operated by the family today. It may have started with offering traditional okazuya comfort foods, such as musubi, chow fun, corned beef hash, fried chicken, and eggplant. Workers would purchase these lunch okazu before the start of the workday that would not require refrigeration. Gulick's offerings slowly expanded over the years due to HI's multi-Asian population to include variations of dishes using different meats and veggies, e.g., garlic/mochiko chicken, tempura, sweet sour spareribs, pork lumpia, pinakbet, pork guisantes, lup cheong, etc. (I used to love their Chinese-style char siu riblets; however, they no longer have that.) With about 30 dishes offered daily, it's now considered a cafeteria-style set up where you can choose the food items of individual servings that you want. They also offer set breakfast berntos and plate lunches with rice/noodles, beef/chicken/fish, spam, and tempura. My favorites include the gigantic corned beef hash (yes, way more potato than corned beef, but it's tasty), veggie tempura, furikake spam musubi, gobo, and anything with green beans. Yes, go early, as the popular items sell out. Service by staff in placing your orders and utensils in takeout boxes and collecting payment is quick and efficient. Customers may hold up the line if their favorites are sold out and/or can't decide what to order with so many items available. The store interior is clean and bright, with a no-frills ambiance, as you just walk in and choose your food items from the display table and pay once you reach the end. Hours of operation are: Mon to Fri 5:00a to 3:30p, Sat 6:30a to 3:00p, Sun closed. Named after the street where it's located and also in a residential area, Gulick Delicatessen has about 5 free designated spaces in its private lot to the right of the building. There are also a few free spaces on the street fronting the main entrance. With lots of choices, there is something for everyone. Oftentimes when I don't know what I want for lunch, Gulick Delicatessen is my choice where I can choose what I want, provided that I go early enough before they sell out their items. I brought my wife here for her to pick some old food favorites of hers. She was so happy since it has been 20 years since she has been here. They were still serving the classic foods that she loved, and boy did they taste good. It was in Kalihi and kind of close to this place so decided to drop by just in case they still had a good selection of choices since it was after 12pm...nope! I didn't want to go somewhere else so just ordered a few items that were left. I did enjoy the food I chose and my husband did too. Thought the prices were about the same as other delicatessen's so that's a plus. A friend recommended their fried tofu with green beans so I will come back for that at an earlier time and I'll have more to choose from. This place is located on Gulick Avenue in a residential area. The food is very tasty won't fail you that department. As texture wise, most of garlic chicken skin was mushy and not crispy...maybe the heat made it soggy. I was able find tidbit crunchy pieces. The broccoli dish had shrimp and tofu ad sopping up the gravy. Broccoli maintained it's nice green color and crunchiness...love that sound!The broccoli dish and chow fun compliments the garlic chicken with their own perfect flavors. My go to in this part of town is Gulick. da Grub: got 2 bentos and 1 lg. Box of overflow. You got the standards: fried chicken, chow fun/mein, Teri beef, shrimp tempura, ahi Teri & spam. But my add on's make the Bento "deluxe" and enough for a 2nd round later. Add On box: shiso musubi, shrimp and veg. tempura, garlic chicken, and couple hash patties. Gulick had been there for the longest time I known. We had business in middle st when we found it mid 70's I could be mistaken when they opened up. Opens at 05:00 am now opens until 3:00pm! Go early their choices of great eats gone in ton time! BBQ Meat or teriyaki beef too salty or marinated in shoyu too long I'm not sure but it goes well with Chowfun noodles not salty at all. Their potato, macaroni salads and namasu are the best tasty salads I know! The large size egg rolls are sold quickly. Goes very well with any order one chooses! Just a ways down Gulick St. from N School St., the restaurant offers parking in a small lot off the delicatessen's building, as well as a couple of street stalls right out front. Gulick Delicatessen has been in this location for as many years as I've been a working gal. A definite go-to place to pick up round-the-island road trip food. Very extensive selection of items to choose from like tuna takuan sushi, lup cheong, chow funn, teri beef, vegetable tempura, corned beef hash patty, gobo, shoyu chicken, teri burgers, garlic chicken, charsiu, mixed salad and namasu, and a variety of musubi, to name a few and all very tasty and available at 6am! Very dangerous when one is hangry first thing in the morning. WE WANT EVERYTHING! My faves consist of the tuna takuan sushi, hash, charsiu, fried chicken, mixed salad, and assorted tempura. The garlic chicken is also very good, when I'm in the mood. The tuna takuan sushi is perfect for breakfast. The sweet-ish pickled flavor compliments the tuna so well with just the right amount of rice. I do wish it were cut in slices vs. wedges. It would be so much easier to eat and less mess. Funky angles in my food vexes me. The has patty is so large and compliments the garlic chicken and chowfunn. I know, that's a lot of starch, but just don't think about that. Think about how fluffy and tasty the hash is, with each bite and before you know it, you've inhaled the entire patty and wish you had ordered 2. The fried chicken is large thighs. So juicy inside and skin is crispy outside. Sometimes I need to add salt, but paired with everything else on my plate, it's great the way it is. The assorted tempura are large, too, and cooked in a light-ish batter, crisp on the outside. I wish the batter was a little softer, but I still really like it. The charsiu is flavorful and tender. I like to slice it and add it (and the shrimp tempura) to a nice steamy bowl of saimin. Airconditioned inside, so even when there are more than two people inside, you won't break a sweat. It's also so clean, it is very inviting. The wait staff are so nice and great as they fill the plates so neatly. Food can be a bit pricey, but if it is tasty, fresh and good quality not to mention the bumbucha portions, it's so worth it. Enjoy! read more

Gulick's used to have their egg omelette filled with kamaboko, green onions, and some kind of meat (spam?) folded in with a nice dashi flavor. Lately when I have gone this is what the egg looks like "a fried folded egg" pretty disappointing especially the fact that the price for a piece. I often stop in for planned and unplanned easy peasy okazuya type food. Not a typical okazuya restaurant, but more like a cafeteria ambiance. Love that they have a few street stalls in front and the smallish parking lot to the right. The best part is that Gulick's staff is fast and efficient so the line moves quickly. There are a lot of food options that is perfect for everyone. Why not 5 stars? The Japanese sato shoyu (sugar soy sauce based) dishes have all the same flavor. My favorite item is the tofu patty, but today my patty was a bit mushy ... insert sad face as this is my protein option. I have tried the fried chicken, but although piece a large, it is often dry. Other favorites are the green beans (always cooked al dente), the eggplant, maki sushi, namasu and the mixed salad. I generally don't choose tempura items as the batter is thick and can be greasy. My recommendation is to go early as popular options sell out fast . I have a running list of everyone's favorite items that I use to make individualized bentos. Favorites: teri hamburger, gobo, potato salad Also recommended: spicy chicken (has bones though), tamagoyaki, corned beef hash patty, cone sushi, namasu The only item I can't recommend is the fried tofu with green beans because I once got a batch with really hard pieces. If you do not see something out that you've had before (and they aren't about to close for the day), there's a fair chance the next batch is already being prepared in the back, so just ask and they can often grab it for you. I wanted to come here because I wanted to try okazuya and you can't get that on the mainland. It's a very casual place. Hours are limited which does make it hard to come here, but it's worth it and close to Waikiki. Ordering is very casual. You have to go up to see what you want. We got a huge variety to try a bunch of things. Chicken: 8/10. Got the shoyu chicken and the spicy chicken. Both were amazing Nishime: 7/10. Unique and not something I eat often but I'm so glad we got it. Tofu: 7/10. Good but nothing special Chow fun: 6/10. Bit bad but nothing stand out Overall, fun and good to try. We had so much that we couldn't finish it all but it's hard to resist when there's so much variety. Cone sushi: 6/10. I like inari and the portion is a decent size but nothing crazy. read more

Gulick is one of my favorite okazuya's. They have a great variety of food selections to choose from and bento options as well. Their staff is very friendly and the line moves rather quickly even during very busy times. There are no tables for sitting. It is basically a grab and go. I would recommend not going too late because they do run out of food after the lunch rush and your selections then become slim. I usually order the same items when I go. I like to order their chow fun, spicy minute chicken which is not spicy at all but very tasty, their green beans and pork stir fry, maki sushi, and their namasu. If there is no spicy minute chicken, you can't go wrong with their shoyu chicken. In my opinion, there really isn't anything here that isn't good and I feel that everyone can find something they will like. Sometimes, they have special items and the food is usually consistent. I would definitely recommend it and say that is is worth a try if you haven't tried it yet. read more

I was sorta in the area, well in Liliha for my seemingly monthly oncologist visit, and had a couple three hours to kill so decided to check out Gulick Deli. I haven't been there for years but that's only because most of my lunches these days are sit-down events and not take away and eat someplace else kind. Today I took my plate home to eat. Service was quick - no line on a Friday at 11:30. Maybe that's the day others eat at sit-down places. Portion sizes are large and everything looks and tastes good so you could rack up a big bill ordering without self-restraint. My bill was $27 including tip. Crispy fried chicken, sweet sour spare ribs, nishime, vegetable tempura, shiso musubi, and huge Diet Coke. Sorry, my camera was sleeping. Everything was great, except the vegetable tempura which was a little oily after sitting around for a while. Note to self: don't order that again. I only ate half of all the stuff plus the whole musubi and was satisfied so I guess it's a reasonable price when pro-rated over two meals. If you haven't been there for a while or ever, you should check it out. Another great local comfort food spot. read more

They are usually busy and parking can be a bit of challenge at times, but when we went, we were lucky and there was a parking stall available. It wasn't crowded yet and I'm assuming we came before the lunch crowd. I decided to get nishime, chow fun, green beans, gobo, shoyu hotdog and a musubi with ume. Everything was delicious. I decided to stop and try it again, as I needed to pick up food for the auto repair shop I take my car to for service. I always forget about this place, so I was really glad when a co-worker suggested it last week and we got a chance to step away from the office for lunch. It definitely did not disappoint! The variety is amazing, and everything I tried was equally delicious. I loaded up my takeout plate with fried rice, fried noodles, butterfish, tempura shrimp, and mochiko chicken--such a satisfying meal. I was also pleasantly surprised by the price. Inari is always yummy here. I keep getting the hash because it looks so delicious and huge but I keep feeling like it has no flavor and needs more onion. Today the star of the show was the fried chicken. I usually pass it up because I didn't like it before. In fact for some reason, no okazuya has good fried chicken until now! The chicken is big and it kinda taste like how Zippy's used to taste when it was bigger and not over done! lol give it a try. I want to go back and buy more. This place is always clean! I love delicatessens because you can get everything ala carte and create your own plate. I've heard about this place, some good and some bad, but never been here before. We were driving by and I literally told my hubby to stop the car, lol. I had to run in and get some food. On my plate I ended up getting the sweet & sour spareribs $3.99, shoyu chicken $3.75, chow fun $3.50 and a veggie tempura $2.75. The hubby wasn't hungry and just got an order of chicken katsu $3.50, fried chicken $3.75 and sweet potato mash $2.05. I love this place. If I lived in the area, I would eat here more often. Everything that I had was yummy, except for the chow fun. It needed a lot more soy sauce. The noodles had no taste whatsoever. Besides that, everything was on point. The shoyu chicken and sweet & sour spareribs were rich in flavor. You can tell by the color. I haven't had a veggie tempura that good in a long time. I ate it three hours later and it was one hundred percent still crispy and not oily at all. They hubby liked the chicken katsu and fried chicken thigh. I didn't try it. I did however polish off the sweet potato mash. It was smooth, creamy, naturally sweet and so good. He was mad, lol. I told him we can always go back. read more

Their food ranges from great to ok. Just that they have such a huge amount of them, not everything can be winners. They have the best Nishime including better than my mom's ( sorry mom). Huge CHUNKS of fresh veggies like carrots, Daikon, konbu and forget what else. Lotta places uses that frozen stuff that are chopped soo small it's instantly recognizable. They also have shiitake, konyaku, and fried tofu. Yum. Wish they added hasu and gobo too (I'm being greedy). Really flavorful, old time flavor. None of the Japanese markets pre-made okazu can match this. Too bad it's vegetarian would be nice to have chicken or pork. If you know, you know. I wonder if these foods can survive, don't think the younger generations know and appreciate these kind of foods that use to be a staple outside Japan. Gulick already discontinued their konbu maki. Zips tried to make it but they long lost their Japanese roots when their factory started making food amass. They offered it as New Year pre-order but it wasn't as good and not even close to Gulick. Gulick makes a good potato salad too. Their fried chicken was good but they now overcook it so it's dried out and stringy. Their shoyu chicken was brown on the outside but none of the shoyu penetrated inside so no taste. Plus their chicken sometimes has feather follicles sticking out like the chicken wasn't plucked correctly and it grosses me out to no end. So I dumped it. Not the first time either. Their chow funn is good but it's meatless so I need to add my own char siu or spam. Their tuna musubi is good too. Their hamburger seems like they use a filler so it's junk. Their eggplant dish is good but the pork was too dry. I like they open until 3 pm, but I risk not having much selection by the afternoon. read more

Like most Okazuya's on the island it's best to go as early as you can especially with limited parking. After lunch the food is also limited as they're trying to sell out before closing time. This cute place is pretty much a grab and go as there are no seats to dine in and enjoy. The lines are usually long but they have so many workers & they keep the line moving. Just to let you know - there is a $10 minimum charge to use your credit cards. But as someone who barely carries cash anymore I do appreciate them allowing credit card charges since most Okazuya's on the island is cash only.
