    Rafute (shoyu pork) Donburi
    Paul L.

Utage is one of the last restaurants left serving Okinawan food on the regular menu. It's busy (for good reason) so make a reservation. If you're a repeat customer, you get recognized and welcomed immediately. Service is fast and friendly, and the servers are happy to offer suggestions. The ambiance is very "local." They have Japanese dishes as well as Okinawan ones, and even some fusion dishes like the Rafute (soy sauce pork) Donburi. The "full course" gives you miso soup (or salad) as well as a drink and dessert. And the "build your own" teishoku allows you to create your perfect meal.

This is one of those place in Hawaii where mostly regulars come to eat. You will be addressed by "Aunty" or "Uncle" and that's just how it goes. They serve Okinawan comfort food. They don't serve raw Sushi or Sashimi just so you know. My husband got the pig feet and he was pleased. I got Shoyu pork with Soba. Pork was on the chewier side and the Soba was more like yellow Udon. Service was good until all the regulars started coming in. You can call in advance for reservation. They are closed on Mondays.

Met up with a few friends at our favorite Japanese restaurant Utage. We ordered the Utage Specials and Soki Soup. Loved the Miso Soup and Tsukemono. The entrees were amazing and delightfully delicious. Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura was perfect accompanied by their own tempura sauce . Fresh Sashimi, BBQ chicken, BBQ beef, Tonkatsu, Chicken Katsu can't be beat. Their soups are amazing especially the Soki soup a definite favorite especially when it's cold out. For dessert they have vanilla Mac nut , Coffee, and a special treat Mud Pie ice cream along with Strawberry and Coffee jello. Perfect way to end a perfect meal. Our server was awesome. I think she worked the dinner shift by herself taking care of everyone extremely well. Highly recommended

Utage is a place that feels like home. Upon first glance one might think the restaurant has seen better days. But therein lies the local charm. The food served here is Okinawan and local style. The food here is solid! Fish tempura (5/5) large pieces of battered fish and vegetable tempura Unagi (5/5) beautiful piece of perfectly cooked unagi on rice. My Dad ate everything! Ox tail soup (5/5) full of ox tail, veggies, and flavorful Shoyu pork (5/5) juicy, flavorful, and fatty. Our family devoured this dish (as a side) The best part about Utage is the service. It's local style Aloha at its best! We always get the same server and he's wonderful! When we come here for lunch the vibe is warm and welcoming. While the parking lot is pretty big overall, be prepared for the lot to be busy because there are a lot of popular restaurants in the same area. Reservations are recommended if you want to make sure you get a table especially during peak meal times. LOCATION: 4/5 FOOD: 4/5 SERVICE:5/5 VALUE:4/5 AMBIANCE:4/5 CLEANLINESS: 3/5 PARKING:4/5

Sooooo Good!!! This is my favorite family Okinawan food restaurant of ALL TIME! The staff are so friendly and Ohana to us. They are kind and patient. Service here is sweet! They take care the kapunas too and super courteous. The ambience here is Ohana (family) oriented. Clean, chill, safe and comfortable like your grandmother's home with yummy food. If you haven't been here, then you are missing out especially because their food is delicious, fresh and always consistently prepared. So here's my update- came with my friend (since it's our "go to" place), I usually get my ahi belly but today is this time- salmon belly sounded so good and they have limited plates. Loved choices from oyako donburi, tempura, and Okinawan food. Good times, good food, good place...ALWAYS!

The 24 year old restaurant that is old by design with worn, faded carpet, dinged and scuffed up wooden furniture staffed by the friendliest people. It is, as the owner said in a 2017 Frolic story, meant to cater to the older generation. But first, when I wrote my original review, I had not yet visited Okinawa. 13 years and three visits later, it all makes sense. Okinawa is to Osaka what Hilo is to Honolulu. A glimpse 30 years back in time. Mom and pop businesses, small cozy eateries making local comfort food. Little shops crafting family specialties. Utage fits right in. The Okinawa staples, the shoyu pork, perfect balance of light soy sauce and sugar. Pig's feet soup, fall apart tender, loads of gelatin to make the soup creamy with a generous amount of konbu, daikon, and mustard cabbage. The soki soba, well braised spare ribs, nice porky broth, thick Okinawa soba. The oyako donburi, properly modified for the taste of Okinawa. Lighter and sweeter with lots of additional veg and fishcake. Finally, the tempura, soft and fluffier, not crisp like the Japanese counterpart though the batter isn't as seasoned and sweet as expected. Still, a generous portion of properly cooked veg. The thick, pre-steamed sweet potato a standout. The restaurant makes local plate lunch staples for those not wanting Okinawa food though anyone who has had the variant of a SPAM musubi containing a sheet of sweetened egg has enjoyed the variant created in Okinawa. Reasonable pricing averaging $30 for a complete meal. One of a handful of places still making Okinawa food. It doesn't disappoint.

Update 1-13-26. Today my husband wanted to eat Japanese food so made the suggestion to go eat here. Their food is always good no matter whether its their tempura or their special on their menu board. I always love their salmon with pobzu sauce but today I said I'll try their beef tofu. Didn't want to get rhe complete meal so I just had it ala carte. It was good the beef was thinly sliced soft and tender their sauce was just right not sweet or not to much shoyu was good. My husband had miso pork with squash he said was good. Will always come back. Even our yelp friends liked it too when we had a celebration.

Utage is a nostalgic family favorite from small kid time, that I hadn't revisited in over a decade simply because it's never been a place I've gone with just a small group or myself. Well, I was in the neighborhood the other day around lunchtime and was allured to their door by the cute chatty aunties standing outside the restaurant. I was told I just missed the lunch rush at my arrival time of 1:30pm, and I was quickly seated at a four person table (despite it being just me), like they knew I was gonna end up ordering enough food for 4. The soba pictured completely took me back to small kid time and I was fortunate to enjoy conversation with their friendly staff, as well as the other late lunch diners in my vicinity. The menu boasts both Japanese and Okinawa options, as well as classic local diner bites. I was so stoked on the lunch I had, I also ended up ordering ahi belly nitsuke (this was a special), eggplant, tofu and pork stir fry, and a cheeseburger for dinner for my ohana (no the cheeseburger was not for a child, it was for my husband haha). The food was packed neatly and reheated well for our meal about 6 hours later. My husband was thankful and immediately upset I didn't physically bring him to utage with me. We will be back!!

    Special: Portuguese Bean Soup
    Shari T.

Did you know that Utage has a call list for their specials? I'm on the call list for when they have Portuguese Bean Soup (and Konbu Maki) on special. Yup, they actually call you on the phone to ask if you want to reserve some! They usually have this the day after Ham Shank is on special. This is one of my favorite locales to get Portuguese Bean Soup. Utage's iteration is more stew than soup cos the broth is so thick and rich! I don't even need rice with this soup cos it's so packed with ingredients. And on Fridays, they rotate between regular Andagi and Okinawan Sweet Potato Andagi. I had to get an order (one order = 5 andagi). In my opinion, the andagi from Utage is the most similar (on Oahu) in taste and texture to the Sata Andagi you'll find in Okinawa (but it doesn't suck all the moisture out of your mouth like some of the Okinawan sata andagi does). My all time favorite is their Gingerbread Andagi that they make closer to Christmas. Hmm, I better get on that call list too!

I haven't been to Utage in a LOOOONG time, so I thought it was time to visit and eat there again! ***What I ordered ~ **Shoyu Pork (8/10) ~ I loved the sauce that the pork was marinated it. It was the perfect amount of sweet and salty. However I wish there was morning of a refreshing hint to it. If they added ginger I think it would have been PERFECT. Also, I wish they gave us more rice. We weren't sure if we had to side order more, or if it was free refills for the set.. **Nori Wrapped Ahi Tempura (8.5/10) ~ This was surprisingly easy to eat. Like once you bite into it the more you would want to keep eating it. It kind of reminds me of plate lunch. Overall, the sauce was a mayo and Okonomiyaki/Takoyaki flavor. Which went really well with the tempura. Although, if you don't eat it fast enough it gets soggy and mushy really quickly. Overall, I would come back and try their other stuff on the menu! Service is a little on the slower side, but everything else was good! Also I recommend getting their sweet treats. Their coffee ice cream was delicious and my boyfriend loved their honeydew mochi ice cream!!

Don't get me wrong this place was amazing, but there were little tidbits service wise that I couldn't ignore. Everyone was very friendly, the space was compact but homey. We had the Oxtail Soup, Saba (special) and the Ahi Tempura which all were fantastic! But be warned, it was probably my mistake but I thought the grilled saba would be a Saba shioyaki but it wasn't? Surprisingly I liked the ahi tempura. Was it over priced yeah?! But it was worth it!

Little weird entrance but once seated service and food was great. I've been back every week since my first time and when we return in a few months from summer vacation, we will be heading back. I don't know what Okinawan food is, but whatever it is, I like everything I've tried so far. I had the noodle soup with tendon and vegetables. The broth was rich and satisfying and the portion generous. You can finish in one go if hungry or it makes 2 good lunches. I look forward to going back and making our way through the menu

Tucked on the second floor of a Piikoi Parkway building, it feels like stepping back in time, a true bespoke bar with vintage art, moody lighting, and comfy couches that make it perfect for couples or a night out with friends. We sat at the bar, which was a highlight, Michael and Tony were welcoming, easy to talk story with, and clearly know their craft. I went with the Barreled Old Man, a smooth, layered mix of bourbon, rye, and brandy that just worked, while my wife's Sesame Veil brought a nutty, balanced flavor that stood out. For round two, the Espressing My Love was a great take on an espresso martini, and Michael built my wife a custom drink off her favorite flavors and nailed it again. We paired it with the smoked mozzarella and salami grilled cheese and Ho Farms tomato soup, and this is where it really hit. The sandwich came out hot and crisp, and when you took a bite the cheese pulled away just right, that perfect melt, with the salami adding a savory kick. The tomato soup was fresh, bright, and made for dipping you didn't want to stop. We were welcomed with a table that had our name on it, a small touch that goes a long way. Prices are on point for the quality and experience you're getting. It's a bit of a hidden, hip spot, not for a quick drink but for when you want to sit, relax, and enjoy it. To my surprise, on a Sunday evening after having dinner nearby at Maze, my wife and I walked over to Bar Leather Apron and we were able to get seated right away! In fact, around 7:30 p.m. when we stopped by, there was actually a ton of seating available in the bar. Who would've guessed. If you're in the same boat as me and are unable to find a reservation for your upcoming visit, I would encourage you to stop by and try a walk-in. The first page of the menu lists a wide variety of whiskey based cocktails. Most -- if not all, of the cocktails are pre-fixed with BLA (Bar Leather Apron), and represent a collaboration with the named distillery. If you're fan of whiskey, you'll definitely have a difficult time picking only one. I ultimately ordered their "Take Warning" -- 2021 BLA Knob Creek BLA Single Barrel, Cynar, Carpano Antica, Mezcal, Bergamot Salt. Drinks here are not cheap -- averaging $20 to $25 per drink. Although my drink was very spirit forward, it still felt very well balanced. I appreciated the hint of smokiness from the mezcal that rounded out the end of a sip. Service here quick and friendly. When we received the check, a cute small chocolate snack was brought over as well, borrowed from the menu at Maze. Overall, I can see why Bar Leather Apron has earned so many accolades in its field. Definitely worth a stop by if you enjoy the art of mixology.

We called and they could accommodate us right away. We headed there and they had the beautiful room all ready to go. The room was huge and clean! Decorations were colorful and bright. The couches were very comfortable and clean. The TVs were HUGE! They were the biggest screens I've ever had for karaoke. The system has plenty of features, and for some, it may be "too much". They offer they're own karaoke catalog system, an older karaoke system (no videos, just lyrics), and YouTube was also integrated. One of the karaoke systems was cool cause you could see the music videos and can sing along. The only thing we noticed for some songs, the synchronization of music and lyrics were off so just make sure you know the song, otherwise, you're gonna be a beat behind. Also, the YouTube system didn't allow ANY song to be sung. The system didn't support some well-known karaoke channels because of the video formats. Lastly, the choice of Japanese songs was bare, but that's not really a problem if you don't sing Japanese songs. They have drinks and food, but we only ordered drinks because we already ate...and we like alcohol. They had a fairly good selection for hards and beers. Sorry, I cannot give an opinion on food. Staff is awesome. We met the owner and he treated us so well. To squeeze us in on a Saturday was a treat, and also a lesson to us on better planning (well, my friends, not me because this wouldn't have happened lol). If you wanna sing karaoke with friends and let out some energy, give this place a try! It's beautiful and will make any karaoke experience fun!
