It's been a while since I've been here but went recently with my sister and brother-in-law. Despite Hawaii's poor economy, the place is usually busy even on a weekday. Glad we had a reservation (even though we went for an early lunch). The place hasn't changed, the decor is the same What was nice was that there were a lot of wait help so service, even when it was busy,was attentive. Food was plentiful. Previously I had ordered the teishoku tempura but next time I'll order the tempura and side of rice. My sister did this and she had such a large serving of various tempura. I think there was four shrimp tempura (the teishoku didn't have as much. Most of the time I've been here the parking was available. But because there are so many other restaurants and stores the parking lot was usually pretty full but perhaps because we were lucky or early there were many spaces. I always enjoy eating at Utage. There is a great selection of food. You can do the 2 or 3 combo for variety. I usually have the salmon or ahi tempura. I cannot find their exquisite ahi tempura anywhere else. The coffee jelly with whip cream is my favorite way to end a meal. Choose the complete meal to add a salad or soup, a beverage and dessert. I love me some good comfort food and the fact that it was Japanese/Okinawan was a perfect homage to my boyfriend heehee reading the reviews, we got there right when they opened and there was already a small line! The place was a lot more spacious than expected and they had a decent amount of phone orders coming in already. Their menu is pretty vast, with both Japanese and Okinawan dishes for each side of the menu. We tried their Okinawan Soba and the Nori Wrapped Ahi Tempura (with a complete set). If you're a repeat customer, you get recognized and welcomed immediately. Service is fast and friendly, and the servers are happy to offer suggestions. The ambiance is very "local." This is one of those place in Hawaii where mostly regulars come to eat. You will be addressed by "Aunty" or "Uncle" and that's just how it goes. They serve Okinawan comfort food. They don't serve raw Sushi or Sashimi just so you know. My husband got the pig feet and he was pleased. I got Shoyu pork with Soba. Tofu fish cake - this was surprisingly tasty and good. It's sliced and lightly pan fried. Not dry, fluffy texture, great appetizer all the way around. No sauce necessary. It is, as the owner said in a 2017 Frolic story, meant to cater to the older generation. But first, when I wrote my original review, I had not yet visited Okinawa. 13 years and three visits later, it all makes sense. Okinawa is to Osaka what Hilo is to Honolulu. A glimpse 30 years back in time. Mom and pop businesses, small cozy eateries making local comfort food. Little shops crafting family specialties. Utage fits right in. The Okinawa staples, the shoyu pork, perfect balance of light soy sauce and sugar. Pig's feet soup, fall apart tender, loads of gelatin to make the soup creamy with a generous amount of konbu, daikon, and mustard cabbage. The soki soba, well braised spare ribs, nice porky broth, thick Okinawa soba. The oyako donburi, properly modified for the taste of Okinawa. Lighter and sweeter with lots of additional veg and fishcake. Finally, the tempura, soft and fluffier, not crisp like the Japanese counterpart though the batter isn't as seasoned and sweet as expected. Still, a generous portion of properly cooked veg. The thick, pre-steamed sweet potato a standout. The restaurant makes local plate lunch staples for those not wanting Okinawa food though anyone who has had the variant of a SPAM musubi containing a sheet of sweetened egg has enjoyed the variant created in Okinawa. Utage is a nostalgic family favorite from small kid time, that I hadn't revisited in over a decade simply because it's never been a place I've gone with just a small group or myself. Well, I was in the neighborhood the other day around lunchtime and was allured to their door by the cute chatty aunties standing outside the restaurant. I was told I just missed the lunch rush at my arrival time of 1:30pm, and I was quickly seated at a four person table (despite it being just me), like they knew I was gonna end up ordering enough food for 4. The soba pictured completely took me back to small kid time and I was fortunate to enjoy conversation with their friendly staff, as well as the other late lunch diners in my vicinity. The menu boasts both Japanese and Okinawa options, as well as classic local diner bites. I was so stoked on the lunch I had, I also ended up ordering ahi belly nitsuke (this was a special), eggplant, tofu and pork stir fry, and a cheeseburger for dinner for my ohana (no the cheeseburger was not for a child, it was for my husband haha). The food was packed neatly and reheated well for our meal about 6 hours later. My husband was thankful and immediately upset I didn't physically bring him to utage with me. Did you know that Utage has a call list for their specials? I'm on the call list for when they have Portuguese Bean Soup (and Konbu Maki) on special. Yup, they actually call you on the phone to ask if you want to reserve some! They usually have this the day after Ham Shank is on special. This is one of my favorite locales to get Portuguese Bean Soup. Utage's iteration is more stew than soup cos the broth is so thick and rich! I don't even need rice with this soup cos it's so packed with ingredients. And on Fridays, they rotate between regular Andagi and Okinawan Sweet Potato Andagi. I had to get an order (one order = 5 andagi). In my opinion, the andagi from Utage is the most similar (on Oahu) in taste and texture to the Sata Andagi you'll find in Okinawa (but it doesn't suck all the moisture out of your mouth like some of the Okinawan sata andagi does). It was the perfect amount of sweet and salty. However I wish there was morning of a refreshing hint to it. If they added ginger I think it would have been PERFECT. Also, I wish they gave us more rice. We weren't sure if we had to side order more, or if it was free refills for the set.. **Nori Wrapped Ahi Tempura (8.5/10) ~ This was surprisingly easy to eat. Like once you bite into it the more you would want to keep eating it. It kind of reminds me of plate lunch. Overall, the sauce was a mayo and Okonomiyaki/Takoyaki flavor. Fresh Sashimi, BBQ chicken, BBQ beef, Tonkatsu, Chicken Katsu can't be beat. Their soups are amazing especially the Soki soup a definite favorite especially when it's cold out. Update 1-13-26. Today my husband wanted to eat Japanese food so made the suggestion to go eat here. Their food is always good no matter whether its their tempura or their special on their menu board. I always love their salmon with pobzu sauce but today I said I'll try their beef tofu. Didn't want to get rhe complete meal so I just had it ala carte. It was good the beef was thinly sliced soft and tender their sauce was just right not sweet or not to much shoyu was good. My husband had miso pork with squash he said was good. Utage also serves Japanese & local cuisine. Opened in 2001, Jocelyn KIshimoto started the family-run Utage Restaurant in the City Square Shopping Center in Kalihi. Born in Ginowan City, Jocelyn emigrated to HI in 1974 at age 14 to join her grandmother. She worked as a waitress during high school, got married & managed a Chinese restaurant for 17 years. She then worked for her aunt for 3 years who owned Violet's Grill. It had eggs, onions & green onions w/ rice & a delicious sauce that flavored the rice. The donburi was quite large & had generous portions of shoyu pork. * Chicken goya chanpuru. Hubby substituted chicken instead of shoyu pork w/ bittermelon, tofu & eggs. You are given a choice of meat topping of pork, chicken, spam, bacon, tuna or shoyu pork. He enjoyed this! * Unagi Donburi. A generous portion of unagi over rice & topped w/ green onions, it was very savory & tasty! A lesser amount of sauce could be used, though. * Chicken Karaaage. Generous dish w/ dipping sauce. Served piping hot, it was very tasty & had the right crunch! * Keiki menu mini hamburger steak. Simple dish that was satisfying. * Veggie Tempura. Always enjoy Green River that brought back a nostalgic charm! The miso soup was loaded w/ fried fishcake tofu. The Dave's ice cream was very creamy & delish! And staff let us stay there 5+ hours without rushing us out before the dinner crowd came; fortunately, there was no one waiting for a table that required us to leave. But Saturday night showed how popular the restaurant is, as walk-ins were turned away due to all tables being filled. Staff was attentive, friendly & knowledgeable. Owner Jocelyn is always thinking of taking care of her customers, e.g., preparing lighter fare for senior citizens & providing choices for families & their kids. The interior is spacious & can accommodate up to 65 people, as booths were removed some years back. Large groups of max 12 people can be accommodated. Annual get together with my favorite co-workers from two decades ago, ahem(!) - and this year, we met at Utage for dinner! Ample parking available outside of the restaurant, thankfully, since it was drizzling on arrival. Very popular place as an Okinawan specialty venue, family owned and operated! Enjoyed the good food and great friends - we each had the combo meals so we could have both the tempura and well known shoyu pork (I was so full I had to take the whole serving of pork home for another meal)! Dessert was included so of course we had the specialty ice creams from Dave's! And Yay! We special ordered our andagi for next day pick up-as they sell out like hot cakes! Only made fresh on Friday mornings, so go get 'em! PS. I got more than everyone could enjoy so I even shared the andagi the next day - and my craft fair friends could not believe how yummy and crunchy they were, even then! That's how well made they are! I think I have been to this restaurant before my most recent visit. But I am not sure. I just knew that this is an Okinawan restaurant. Anyway, we had just finished our taxes across Kalani Street and decided to eat here. I looked over the menu and the specials that were posted on the wall and decided on the nakami champuru. It's a stir fry of pork stomach, mushrooms, and onions. The menu says also includes konyaku, but maybe I overlooked them with the onions. It was really tasty. If you didn't know it was pork stomach, you wouldn't know. The bf was boring and got nori wrapped ahi tempura. He got Japanese food at an Okinawan restaurant! The restaurant was busy on a Tuesday so we had to wait for service a couple of times. At least the food was made to order and not sitting on a burner. The place is kinda homey and seemed like it needed to be refreshed, but it was ok. Didn't see an alcohol menu but they did have soft drinks and tea. It's a smaller, older establishment. I had to order the Okinawa soba and hubs got a bento. Hubby and I was walking towards Young's Fish Market and passed this restaurant, Utage Restaurant and Lounge. They had a sign that said they're selling 6 andagi for $6.50 today. Of course I love andagi and hubby decided to buy these for me. The hostess up front informed me that theirs is made crispy. As I got my andagi, I was surprised to see how unusually huge it was. It tasted great and it certainly was crispy. I didn't see her name, wasn't really looking for it, but she gets an A+ rating from my hubby and I. Albeit we weren't planning on eating there, she was very personable and super sweet. The place was really packed so this must be a popular place to dine at. We decided to come here with friends that like Okinawan food. I wanted to try the pigs feet soup but my friend said it was tasty but the last time it was not as soft as the other two times. So I went for the oxtail soup. It was very yummy yum yum! The tempura was pretty amazingly yummy yum yum. The salmon was cooked a little too much for me. I like moist and soft salmon. We tried the oxtail soup and shoyu pork donburi, both were excellent. The oxtail soup has a lot of oxtail and plenty of vegetables. The soup was very tasty and the abundance of veggies complemented the oxtail well. The shoyu pork was equally good. The sauce had a very pleasant taste, not too sweet and not too much shoyu. Shoyu pork with eggs, donburi style is a delicious combination. The service was excellent and the atmosphere very comfortable. The workers seem to know a lot of the customers, which is a good sign that their food is good so people keep coming back. It's also good value for your money. I highly recommend it! read more

another visit to one of our favorite spots. lots of parking. warm welcome by the staff always makes us feel at home. nice clean roomy restraunt that is always packed. make reservations! had the tofu fish cake crispy outside, soft inside with a very mild flavor. with the sauce. the tempura ahi rolls is mayjah and a favorite. crunchy tempura with soft fresh ahi pieces. drizzled with mayo and unagi sauce. I usually get the nasubi champuru but today felt like a donburi. was a good portion. nostalgic flavor brought back some memories. no forget the complete meal with the green river, miso soup, and the dessert. so good. read more

This family run business is an absolute gem. I've been a steady customer for a very long time. The quality and quantity has NOT changed. The prices have always been reasonable for having top level Uchinanchu food. Their Rafute is a killer and the serving is very generous. Through the years I've tried just about everything on their menu. They also have great American dishes. One of my favorites is their Okinawa Oxtail Soup. Went to Utage haven't been there for a while and wanted to update the prices from the older menu, but somehow it will not let me add pictures? I had the soka soap which the soup base is like the pig feet soup but has spareribs instead my wife had the pigs feet soup! We both enjoyed the soka and the pigs feet soap it was so delicious and not oily. The full meal now is priced at $6.00 added to your meal order which now most items are $22.00 and up.
