Always a treat knowing I got a ono lunch on hand for when lunch break comes around. No refrigeration or heating up needed. Mini bento with the delicious daikon is my go to.

Love Okazuya and Mitsuba is one of my favorites. They open super early and they even have regular kine plates you can order off the menu. Don't forget to grab the sweet potato crumbles

    Regular Bento

Open early mornings (2am) when you need a good meal other than fast food in Kalihi and youre working the early shift :( Been around forever, limited parking in front but service is fast so youre in and out. Known for their sweet potato fritters and okazu, I usually get a dozen fritters for the work crew and a bento for myself. Always gotta get side order of the cone sushi too... IYKYK 5 stars.

Update on Mitsuba this morning I stopped by to get some Okazuya for my coworker. I ordered their famous Potato Crumble. If you haven't try this before it's a must . Made out of Okinawan sweet potato in a warm mini buttery turnover. I also ordered hot dog sushi and regular Maki sushi . Support local the best breakfast is Okazuya can't go wrong

A quick grab and go Okazuya stop located in Kalihi. Parking available in the front. Tried some simple items, Inari and garlic chicken. Inari was huge! The Inari was a bit overly marinated..very strong taste. Garlic chicken was ok, very salty as well. They put the chicken with the Inari so the sauce from the garlic chicken was soaked into the Inari...which was more saltier. It does open early in the morning..or maybe really late at night.

Overall a decent place. The guy serving us was nice but a little gruff. The food was okay but not worth the price. If you're feeling nostalgic it's a good place, if you're looking for amazing food and good prices, try somewhere else.

I stopped by while passing and it was about 9:20 am and it was already too late. They recommended I would need to come before 8 am to get the full menu. Nevertheless, I decided to get their chowfun and boiled hotdog and grilled hotdog and fried chicken. The hotdogs were acceptable and the chowfun was very tasty and the fried chicken was okay. The cashier was very nice so I would give them a 5 star. I will definitely have to try and stop by before 8 am next time.

This Japanese delicatessen has the oddest hours of operation that I have ever seen with an opening time of 2:00 in the morning! There must be a healthy number of graveyard shift workers who work nearby that can patronize this business to maintain such a schedule. Parking was limited to several spaces in front of the deli which handles take-out orders only as there is no available on-site seating. We came here just before sunrise to get some food to eat while standing in line for the opening of a local attraction. There was no wait at all which was good for us. Hawaiian comfort food could be purchased a la carte or in combination as breakfast, plate lunches, or bentos. Many of the items were on display at the service counter. My friend ordered the hot dog sushi as an eight piece maki roll. Hot dog is not a protein I would have thought to use for sushi, but it's just another form of sausage to pair with rice. I picked a mini bento that had cold chow fun noodles as a base, one rice ball wrapped with dried seaweed, a piece of garlic fried chicken, a link of Portuguese sausage, and a slice of pickled daikon radish. The noodles were starchier than those of a traditional beef chow fun. The chicken was a bit over-fried because the meat was dry. The sausage contained mild spices that added some punch to the bento. The amount of food you received made the prices a decent value. For the late night owls or super early risers, Mitsuba Delicatessen offers a better choice than going to the drive thru of a fast food joint or making a pit stop at a 7-Eleven. I gave a 3.5 star rating for our experience at this okazuya.

Okazuya in Kalihi, Honolulu, Hawaii... When a Yelper receives "Review Of The Day" (ROTD), it's quite a momentous occasion! I was extremely happy for my friend, Paul C., The Unofficial Mayor of Chinatown, when his review of Mitsuba Delicatessen was recognized on 11-27-22. My Lunch Buddy, Dear Daniel, had never been, so, I agreed to go with him at 5am on Wednesday (it's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) because I needed to finish my review. He chose that time of morning because he didn't want to go all the way to Kalihi and have the hot dog sushi sold out. Plus - the parking... It's shared with the apartment building that's above Mitsuba. Yup... The parking lot is crowded. I actually wasn't thrilled about "hot dog sushi". I envisioned a plain hotdog surrounded by rice and covered in a layer of nori (seaweed). That's totally not what it is. Hold that thought... I'll come back to the hotdog sushi... Anyway, Daniel texted me at 4am - to make sure that I was going to be there. OMG... I asked Daniel why he needed me there because It's a takeout place anyway! Where would we eat? He doesn't usually eat that early in the day anyway! LOL! We met at 5am... All four of us! It was a nice surprise for Daniel and a wonderful celebration for Paul! It's a happy event when your friends show up and share your joy! Thanks, Peter and Daniel, for making Paul's ROTD come full circle! Back to the food: I ordered three maki sushi rolls for the ladies at church. I got the nishime and pork tofu for mom, and the eggplant, hamburger, fishcake, and cone sushi for breakfast. The hamburger was kind of dry. The fish cake had some hard spots. The moist cone sushi wasn't the best. The eggplant, nishime, pork tofu, and maki sushi were okay. Paul "highly encouraged" me to have a piece of hotdog sushi... WOW!!! Like he said... It was "life-changing"! The textures, colors, and flavors were popping! The Crunchy, yellow, pickled takuan (Dijon radish) with savory, soft, red hotdog, combined with white, sweet, sushi rice and the kick from the mustard was amazing! I wished that I had ordered one for myself! Aiyah! I guess I need to return... And maybe get garlic chicken and butterfish! P.S. the service was very friendly! The lady came out front to cut up and pack the freshly made rolls of sushi for us. The man seemed quite pleasant for such an early morning!

It's scary how powerful an idea can be. Paul C was honored with a Review of the Day (ROTD) and a group chat I belong to was blowing up with congratulations messages to him. They were all talking about Mitsuba Delicatessen in the Kalihi area. I personally have never been there but their hotdog sushi struck my interest. Nadine C asked if anyone wanted to go and so the idea was planted. Too bad they were closed till Wednesday and Paul C's ROTD was on a Sunday. Time for the idea to simmer in the brain. Sure enough, I jumped at the chance to check them out. Paul C mentioned the selection gets slim the later it gets in the day so I suggested meeting there at 4am since they open at 2am but I'm so happy we met at 5am vs 4am. So, so early for food lol. When I arrived around 4:30am, the parking was packed and there was a line of people out the door! The lot is also shared with residents in the building so that could be a factor in limited available parking stalls. If you are in a rush and can't find parking in the private lot, you can street park on School St. It didn't take too long to secure a stall though and I waited for Nadine C to arrive. Sure enough, she arrived in a blink of an eye and I jumped in with her waiting for a stall for her vehicle. After she parked and while we stood in line, Peter Y drove by. I wasn't expecting anyone else. Shortly after that, Paul C swung by too! Wow! It's a party now! Nice morning surprise to celebrate Paul C's ROTD. Some people ahead of us bought a lot of items so several things were already out. One being the hotdog sushi which is one of the primary reasons I wanted to check them out. Paul C asked about availability and the kitchen made some for us! Lucky us! Maybe they made it specially per his request because they know he's the Mayor of Chinatown? The hotdog sushi comes with 2 rolls per order and they cut them up then place them in a clear plastic container by itself. They asked if I wanted anything else and of course I did! Especially this being my first time there. I ordered their chow funn, hamburger patty, sweet & sour pork and shoyu chicken. They were out of their sweet potato crumble but I would have also ordered that. After I ordered, everyone else did too. I was kinda regretting ordering first as all the items everyone else ordered sounded really good. Darn, I should have ordered the egg though to make the photo pop more lol. The cone sushi also looked good. Small regrets but it's ok. A good reason to come back again. As mentioned by several reviews, the price can add up for okazuya here. I was expecting it to be more than anticipated due to the rising cost of everything but my order being a little under $30 did shock me. The origin of Okazuya is affordable food items that are easy to eat at work for plantation workers. With that in mind, all good with the current cost trying this place out as you can't put a price tag on nostalgia. Congrats again on ROTD, Paul C!

    Really expensive now
    Maile K.

I haven't been here in quite some time, and was flabbergasted at how much my bill was. See my photo Hot Dog Sushi x2 @ $5.50 a roll (One tray contains 2 rolls (8 pc)) Crab Maki Sushi @ $5.50 a roll (One tray contains 1 roll (8 pc)) 4 pieces of Shrimp Tempura @ $3.00/piece My bill $30.89. Holy inflation, Batman! I was under the impression that hotdogs were the cheapest food on the planet! Who knew they rank up there in price with canned tuna and Spam, nowadays! Everything tasted good, but not $30 good. May not be back anytime soon. Sorry. Gotta budget the coin.

This teishoku had 3 large pieces of fried tempura shrimp and assorted veggies, e.g., carrot, eggplant, green beans, pumpkin, that were light and non-oily. Our teishoku meals came with pickled veggies, cold soba, rice, and miso soup with lots of wakame and radish sprouts. Very flavorful! They also offered a complimentary birthday scoop of ice cream with a dollop of an as a topping, which was refreshing and paired well! * Maguro Tempura Teishoku. Hubby's choice of fried tempura tuna set, and he noted that there were 8 large tender pieces of maguro that was lightly fried and non-oily. Very delicious and filling! * Unagi nigiri. The unagi was so flaky, tender, and light and had the right amount of sauce. Loved it! The presentation of the meals was beautifully plated with real, authentic Japanese small dish bowls and plates. The food was of good quality and very flavorful! Customer service was excellent! Diners are greeted by staff upon entering and thanked when leaving. The old-time servers were very patient, attentive, welcoming, and gracious! What can I say about da grub? Simply O.U.T.S.T.A.N.D.I.N.G!!! My BBQ Chicken came out on a hot sizzling platter, & underneath the BBQ Chicken there was grilled onions. Yum! The chicken skin was crispy, and the sauce was deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelicious! Nicely executed! My friend also enjoyed his meal & mention to me that he was also glad to try this place, as he's never been here before. Service here was on point, as the waitress was friendly & efficient. Parking here is a bit challenging, as there are only 4 parking stalls infront of the restaurant. If you're unlucky to get one of the premium parking stalls, street parking is your only other option. The decor at this restaurant is definitely old skool. If your dig old skool nostalgia like me, then ya gotta check out Yagura Restaurant!

This place is definitely a throwback. You can feel that vibe once you walk through the doors. Quickly got seated and served water and tea (which I really appreciated). Some places don't offer it or don't even have it. The menu is quite extensive. I settled on the Teishoku with Sashimi, salmon and teri beef. They brought out the miso soup (not the kind out of a tube) and the rice before the meal arrived. I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the salmon, most places that I go to it's pretty small. I could only eat half of it. The portions sizes for all the dishes were good. I actually had to take home some of the teri beef too. Kind of bummed that I hadn't been to this place 20 years ago. I guess like they say, better late than never. I will be back.

It's worth an Uber ride. Or better yet, go on a Sunday when street parking is free. Whatever plans you make, trust, you will enjoy the omakase with Chef Hiro. The entire group was prompt for the 5:30 p.m. seating. That is being respectful for everyone's time. There is cozy counter seating and separate tables are also available. If you cannot hear him over the background music, Chef's server will also gladly explain each dish. The sashimi to rice ratio is nicely balanced. The rice itself is perfectly seasoned. Chef's attention to detail in all the presentation, was spot on, beautiful! Of course all the seafood and garnishings are fresh. This is 5 stars for taste. Chef Hiro took us to flavor levels beyond the norm. Special Mmmmmms for the smokey dishes that he torched in front of us. We thoroughly enjoyed watching Chef Hiro prepare our exquisite meal.

There is no dedicated parking garage so it's either street parking or any of the open lots nearby. First of all, let's talk about the decor. The entrance and lobby area has concrete walls covered in vintage Japanese movie posters, Japanese decor and artifacts lining the shelves, and illuminated LED blue and hot pink lights hanging from the ceiling. The abstract art and interior decor feels like an underground anime bar and gives off relaxing and chill vibes. You can definitely tell that the owner put a LOT of thought into creating the ambiance he wanted to portray. Walking further into the restaurant is the bar seating area. The menu is izakaya-style, focusing on small flavorful plates. Each dish was explained to us in depth on where the fish came from (flown in), how it was prepared, and what made it so special. Every dish was tasty and filling, though my favorite dish was the toro! It was soft, buttery, and melted in my mouth. This place is pricey ($150 per person) but definitely worth it for the food and the experience. The service is excellent - the owner and the other employees were attentive, personable, and treated us like valued guests.

Glad we had a reservation (even though we went for an early lunch). The place hasn't changed, the decor is the same What was nice was that there were a lot of wait help so service, even when it was busy, was attentive. Food was plentiful. Previously I had ordered the teishoku tempura but next time I'll order the tempura and side of rice. My sister did this and she had such a large serving of various tempura. I think there was four shrimp tempura (the teishoku didn't have as much. Most of the time I've been here the parking was available. But because there are so many other restaurants and stores the parking lot was usually pretty full but perhaps because we were lucky or early there were many spaces. I keep telling myself I need to order bitter melon. But I never do. Maybe next time
