Takeout lunch from Kalihi, Honolulu, Hawaii... I had Tatsuo's bookmarked for a while. It's an old-school type of place. There were some seats for dining in, but there were some guys there, and I didn't wanna cramp their style. Located at the beginning of Sand Island Access Road - on a lane to the right - on the right-hand side of the street, Tatsuo's is also known for their catering. Hint: I would get their namasu for a party... Note: they're closed on weekends and are open from 5:30am to 1pm Monday through Friday... so, plan ahead! Bonus: there are two designated parking stalls in front I got the Pork Loin plate... I had to find somewhere to eat with knife and fork... LOL! I should have thought harder and gotten the Beef Stew - then I wouldn't need a knife, but Pork Loin jumped out at me. Anyway, the Pork Loin was tasty and satisfying! It was a bit hard and a little dry at times, but I dipped the pieces in the namasu sauce and the House dressing (creamy Oriental) from my tossed green salad. Yummy! I gotta go back for the Beef Stew... it's haunting me now... Service was excellent! The nice, patient, polite man at the counter noticed that I was taking photos and asked if I was doing it for social media... Uh... Yeah, I guess so... Haha!

Hidden gem in the beginning part of Sand Island Access Road. They have yummy foods here where it's made to order or you choose already made choices on counter. They also sell bentos and snacks here like homemade rice crispy treats. This is sorta like a small store that sells food plus drinks and snacks. I ordered their Tonkatsu plate which was delish! Maybe I'll come back again soon since it's sorta close to work.

Awesome little hole in the wall with great local food!! Saw several reviews and just had to come to try it! Limited parking and limited dine in but don't let that stop you from enjoying their great local food! Hamburger steak - one they make a great hamburger steak served with onions & gravy over rice served with choice of Mac or toss salad and one side - we got Kim Chee- broke the mouth Ono! Loco moco - asked for sunny side up and soft - just perfectly served! Great gravy and topped with grill onions so perfect Please come and support this little place with great food - good prices - lots of different local foods and great pastele stew - also Ono!!!

I went to a kamaāina Sunday event at Iolani palace and Tatsuo's was there with their food truck. I felt like Hawaiian food being at the palace but also I'm always drawn to pastele stew when I see it on a menu! I was happy you could make your own mixed plate of two choices so I got a laulau and pastele stew. It was a bit pricey at $18 but Hawaiian food is not cheap. It came with rice, lomi salmon, sweet potato and pineapple. Basically a laulau plate with the pastele stew added. I really enjoyed the pastele stew which had good flavor, one of the better ones I've had. The laulau was decent along with the sides. The food was better than I expected and I was very happy with the quality. Workers were efficient while being friendly. I got food from their physical location off of Sand Island Access Road for the Okinawan Festuval during the pandemic so this was a good reminder to go back as their food had consistently been good!

Not a bad spot for the quick grab n go lunchwagon style that's in a store front. All the typical local teri etc etc to bentos and stews. Got beef stew and tripe stew today Was little in the blander side today and rice was little over cooked and the gravy was soaked up into the rice. But for the price and having a hot meal in the rainy weather we been having was nice. If you work near sand island you know this spot. Those 1st time make sure you coming from Nimitz side and aloha power since the street only accessible that one side you'll see

[SIDE DISHES] L-O-V-E the selection of sides that come with the plates. I would go so far as to say that some of the side dishes here are better than those that I've tried at some of the bon dances around the island. Personal favorite is the KIMCHEE CUCUMBER!! Though the namasu and tsukemono is really good too. The selection is always changing and they do run out so go early for the best selection. [FOOD] really like when food is not overly seasoned especially salty. You can always add more to taste but you can't take away. This helps when trying to find something for my 102 year old grandfather to eat. [DAILY SPECIALS] while Tatsuo's has a regular menu it's the always changing specials that we like. You can check them out on FB and Instagram where they post what their daily specials are. For my grandfather we always pick up the CHICKEN TOFU or the CHICKEN NISHIME, while my favorite is definitely the PULEHU STEAK which I always get when it's available. Also they had an A-W-E-S-O-M-E THANKSGIVING PLATE (that consisted of Kalua Turkey, Ham, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Stuffing, Corn, Candied Yams, and Cranberry) for only $14.99!!

If you're not a fan of seafood, don't let the squid deter you as it is a minimal part of the dish and added more of a crunchy textural component rather than actual flavor. This was my wife and my favorite dish. The luau pork was also very good though I liked the version we had at Toa Luau better. We also liked the haupia which was a very refreshing coconut pudding though for some reason our boys didn't like it. We also tried pipikaula which are thinly sliced dry-aged beef short ribs marinated in soy sauce and something else that made it sweet. If you know Korean barbeque, you'll instantly get the sensation that these are close cousins to galbi, though the pipikaula are much less sweet in comparison. The dry aging process also makes them a bit more dryer than galbi. On to more difficult stuff. I was enthusiastic about the fried butterfish collar but once I got a waft of the dish, I knew I was in trouble. I'm very sensitive when it comes to fish so the smell (more than the taste) was off putting. My wife was fine with it and enjoyed the dish, but if you aren't a fan of fishy fish, then I would skip it. The lomi salmon looked very much like pico de gallo with the addition of salt-cured salmon. My boys loved this dish because they love salmon but again I would steer clear if you are a seafood weakling like me. Alas, we come to poi. Had my hopes up since I love taro but the texture and a bit of sourness from fermentation deterred me from trying too much of it. I'm glad we tried it but not sure that we would get it again.

Highway Inn is known for traditional Hawaiian food, but we ended up trying some of the local-style twists. The kalua pig quesadilla was really good, and the tacos were solid too. The staff was super nice about it and was able to accommodate us, with only a small request that we be out by 8pm since there was another big party with a reservation coming in. Absolutely reasonable. They sat us right away at three large tables, which gave us plenty of space for food and didn't force us to sit super close together. Menus, waters, plates, napkins, and forks were all brought out immediately, and our waiter was quick to take our order. We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.

Took a chance any way. Server greets everyone who comes in. Too much work for only one server, hard to get taken care of. More than half the tables were full even before 5pm on a Saturday, and there's a steady take out business, too. Looked at the online menu since the server didn't bring us a menu and we were waiting, but it doesn't list the squid luau combo so we had to wait for the server to take our order. She did take care of us before the walk ins that were ordering take out, and we appreciated that. However, turned out squid luau combo wasn't listed online because they were out. Boo. So hubby and I ordered the laulau combo consisting of a nice sized laulau that was tasty, with a nice ratio of pork to leaves, very large scoop of rice, some lomi salmon that was mostly onions that were quite strong and bitter and almost no salmon, pulehu chicken, which was tasty and had a nice char, and haupia, which was good. So food was fifty/fifty. Hubby ordered a coke, which was bottled Mexican (means real cane sugar) which was yummy. They serve Mexican food so I guess they have other Mexican sodas, but I didn't bother to check the menu. We had to ask for water three times because the server was so busy. We had a lot left over since the portions are big. Not sure if we will be back, though. While the server was nice and trying hard to take care of everyone, having to wait to order (another family even came up to ask is they could order after waiting for awhile) and then having to ask for water three times is a turn off for us. Also - no squid luau where's Hawaiian food is served was a major let down for me.

Now I've had a lot of these in my life, and I must say, Iyasume are easily the best. See musubi and onigiri have humble origins as a quickly made homespun snack or on the go lunch, and when you spot them in the convenience environment they're often a giant ball of rice with a tinge of protein or seasoning for flavor. At Iyasume, these are culinary adventures, stacked with ingredients, all in handheld form, and the variety they offer is IMPRESSIVE! Of course musubi starts with the classic, SPAM. I had to order the kimchi + spam, shiso + spam, and unagi + tamago + spam, all of which were awesome (even the next day!). Onigiri here are actually layered with ingredients, so you get them in every bite, unlike the convenience store versions! They have a HUGE menu, and I went with spicy mentaiko and salmon, spicy mentaiko and ikura, ikura and salmon, and tuna mayo curry, all of which were great. I LOVE that they make these to order. You can see the line in the back hard at work, and they're very fast. You're sure to encounter a line when you arrive, but don't be scared, it moves quickly. The salmon belly is cut into bite-sized pieces so I didn't have to worry about using a knife to cut it. I usually try salmon belly where it is usually seasoned lightly to bring out the natural flavor of the salmon, but Guava Smoked's salmon belly is just grilled in a way that makes the salmon sweet/crispy and still get traces of the salmon taste as well. It's definitely not your traditional Japanese-style way of cooking salmon belly but really just their own. I'd go back and get this again. Another thing too. I'd get this with beer. 3.5 stars We wanted…read moreto try authentic Hawaiian food and came across this spot. The owner was very friendly and took the time to recommend dishes for us, including the laulau and lechon kawali. We also ordered the BBQ short ribs. Overall, it was a good experience trying Hawaiian food, but it's just not really our type of cuisine. The laulau was quite dry, and the preparation felt more like meat that had been boiled or cooked in liquid, which isn't something I usually enjoy. The lechon kawali had a crispy pork belly texture, topped with something similar to a salsa, but it didn't suit our taste either. Unfortunately, the cabbage served with it also had some black spots, which was off-putting. The BBQ short ribs were the highlight of the meal and the dish we enjoyed the most. We appreciate the experience and the hospitality, but the flavors just didn't quite match our personal preferences.

Then someone wanted to change from rice to poi. I tried many times and no one answered. Their voice mailbox was full. We e ended going there to make the change. He gentleman looked like he was working be himself. We bads to wait almost a half hour for him to finish the order. 2. Price - the prices were higher than expected. All the plates were $26.00 and up. 3. Food - The poi was very tasty and fresh, although a bit watery. The lau lau had a lot of lean pork filling, not a lot of leaves. The long rice didn't have much chicken and was a bit watery too. We enjoyed the sweet potato. There was also lomi salmon, haupia onion and chili pepper water. 4. As mentioned before there isn't much parking. The restaurant wasn't busy when we got there. Overall the food and service was OK. The price was a bit high.
