I asked her what she wanted to eat - and I rattled off some menu items. When I got to the free private parking lot and walked inside, I realized that there's no dine-in anymore. It's just a large space where parties used to happen? The woman at the cash register was helpful. I asked for Hawaiian plate - she said, "Only on Fridays." I asked for Pastrami Sandwich - she replied, "Only on Thursdays." I asked for Chicken Hekka - she answered, "After 10:30." Wow... I struck out three times. I asked, "What do you have then?" She pointed to the Daily Specials list and the hot entrées in the warmers. I selected Hamburger Steak, Boneless Korean Fried Chicken, and Beef Stew. When I got home, I told my sister about the encounter and we laughed... everything we talked about wasn't available... LOL! We tasted the three dishes: Korean Boneless Fried Chicken had a light batter and subtle, pleasant flavor. Beef Stew was tasty and the meat was very tender! Went here for lunch today for the first time despite living in close proximity. I had their daily special of corned beef with cabbage plate. It was probably one of the more pricier items on the menu but it was worth it! In case you were wondering, it was about $16 for the mini (one scoop rice) and about $19 for the regular. Luckily there was no line due to the rain but there was a steady flow of hungry customers like myself. Food was delicious. If only the price were a little lower, would've been perfect. Great find! Masa's cafeteria is also owned by IGE's but this location is in the Mapunapuna/Industrial area of salt lake. We all know that this area is notorious for NO PARKING! but they actually have a good amount of parking stalls available. They're located in a corner/up a little hill when you enter the parking lot. i kind of wonder if it's a little elevated since this area can be flooded sometimes. I've only come for the thursday specials - I really enjoyed the pot roast and the pastrami sandwiches. The portions are really big and can be shared between 2 people and the pricing is pretty decent. There is a take out window where you can order - so you can totally bring your dog! However, no where to really sit and eat so it's mostly takeout. Service depends who helps you! the first time the lady i got was really nice! the second time the older lady/grandma meant well but she had to make my order a total of 3 times for it to be right. i actually drove off and noticed it an hour later and made it back in time before they closed. I decided to try this place for lunch, it's street parking it can park next door and shop at Fisher Hawaii first. They still don't have dine in since covid and no plans to add it back. They have a takeout counter to order food. I ordered a mini turkey with mashed potatoes and there was stuffing under the turkey. It was good, reminds me of comfort home cooking. I couldn't tell if there was sour cream in the mashed potato or if it went sour, but i ended up eating it, They open for breakfast and lunch only with their daily menu on their website. Mini Hamburger Curry (all rice) - Barely any flavor. Needed to add salt and shoyu and definitely tasted old like from the previous day. Don't normally mind, but just flavorless muck. Breakfast plate - Bacon was okay not crispy like ordered. Menu says it comes with coffee no drink was offered and the toast was stone cold including the butter on it. Chicken Musubi - What is this?? I've had manyyyy chicken musubis. Just a piece of chewy gross skin, oily, no flavor chicken thigh on a HUGE piece of rice. Just no flavor. I shouldn't need to add hot sauce AND shoyu and it still be plain and gross. Rice to meat rations is ridiculous. I went here and recommended it to a friend. I'm from here. The only thing that's not good about Masa at breakfast so when they aren't open. My go to order is 2 scoops fried rice and a side of Portuguese sausage. Could I buy the whole breakfast plate that would include 2 eggs, toast, and coffee? Yes, but I don't because I just enjoy the focus on the fried rice. The ladies that work in the mornings are nice and very focused, they take your order quickly and hustle to get it out. This is a review of their banquet hall. Just hosted a surprise retirement party for my Mom here. I've dined here throughout the years and the food speaks for itself. Time tested family recipes keep everyone coming back. This isn't some hidden gem but a family dynasty and a local favorite for generations here in Hawaii. This was my first time however hosting an event here. The level of customer service was just as excellent as their food. From beginning to end, all of my questions were answered and the event manager Anna was super helpful. In terms of affordability? They can't be beat. We booked a Sunday luncheon for our event and it was a minimum of 100 guests. I was extremely happy with the value we got with the delicious famous Ige's food and service we received. Also, beverages like water/juice and coffee were included. They also allowed us to bring outside pupus with NO additional charge. They did however require us to provide the paper plates and cutlery for the pupus, which we had no problem with. The staff made set up so easy. Tables were all covered and all we had to do was set up our decorations. Break down was just the same, with us only having to take down our decorations. In fact, we naturally were throwing away our own trash by habit but the staff were so kind enough to let us know that they will gladly do that for us. So so happy with the experience we had with Masa's Cafeteria. The place and food brought back so many happy memories for our guests of all ages. Everyone felt at home and felt so cozy. My family and I have been frequenting Masa's Cafeteria in Mapunapuna for over 20+ years. A couple days ago, I ordered their Wednesday special turkey plate and found so many BONES! The bones were small fragments that probably fell off the meat, but with the gravy, it wasn't until I bit into one that I realized it was a bone. I unfortunately found many more bones in my plate and was not able eat my food. I called the next day to report it, and the female server transferred the call to her manager. I explained the situation for awareness especially to prevent someone from choking on a bone! The manager asked who the server was (I don't know her name but can identify her if I saw her), said sorry and hung up. Basically its the same food, but over there the workers are much more friendly. Had a retirement party to attend and it was held a Masa's Cafeteria located in Mapunapuna . Lots of parking either on the street or they have a lot behind there cafeteria. The food was delicious from Potato Macaroni salad, rice, Chinese chicken salad, yakisoba noodles, spare ribs, shoyu pork, fried chicken, beef broccoli, mahi mahi and of course dessert Andagi donut. Congratulations to my friend Geno Oshiro retiring after 40years in the DOE . I can't believe anyone who can work that long and still have the energy that he has. I grew up on Masa's Plate Lunches when it was on Liliha. This place is a reasonably priced restaurant with good tasting food. The people here are friendly, most of the time. Sometimes they get overwhelmed and can get a bit irritated. Make sure you call in your order way ahead of time because although all the food is pretty much prepped and cooked already, they serve people at the window first. It doesn't matter if your order is 10 plates or more. You'll need to wait minimum 20 minutes. There is no where to dine in. Parking is either street or their small lot. Wow thanks to yelp, I found another great local place to eat! They have reasonable local plate lunches, however, they are only open during lunch hour, and not weekends, so it's hard to be able to try here if you are working. Fortunately, I retired, so I am able to try all these lunch places with my retired friend on the weekdays. TAKE OUT ONLY at this time. They do not have dine in at this time, but they do cater and you can reserve their room to have parties of 100 or more on sat night or Sunday lunch. Tripe Stew - 5 stars - for only $13.75, I had a heavy plateful of rice, scoop of mac and tripe stew. I was going to have the Hawaiian plate, but I am very particular and only like to order laulau if they personally make it. However, they do not make their own laulau, so I didn't try it this time, an opted for the tripe stew. The stew has plentiful tripe, fresh, not gamey, and so ono, with a little spicy kick. I'd definitely order this again. However, the mac had no taste, so I only ate a bite of it. I tried my friend's beef stew, but the beef was a tinge tough, and wasn't as flavorful as the tripe stew. He also had a little stomach ache after. Could be because we ordered later during lunch hour, and the mac or stew was sitting in the container/warmer for a while. Service - very fast since they are already premade in metal warmers. Parking - the parking lot next to Masa's is only reserved for Fisher Hawaii, so we had to find street parking. The year 2020 was especially life changing and excruciatingly painful as we lived through government shutdowns and the mandate to shelter in place because of COVID-19, which cause 75% of all activity in Honolulu to come to an abrupt and agonizing stop. We felt heartfelt sorrow to see business' dear to us, like Like Like Drive Inn, Love's Bakery, Kobe Steakhouse, Shirokiya, Alan Wong's, The Honolulu Club, Monterey Bay Cannery and Char Hung Hut close their doors forever. We lost that "LUCKY YOU LIVE HAWAII" feeling. The expression "LUCKY YOU LIVE HAWAII" became a weak and faded memory. Well it's 2023 and things have definitely gotten better, but for me, I don't feel "LUCKY YOU LIVE HAWAII" ... on Saturday's because Saturday's is when the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors play football. I miss the "LUCKY YOU LIVE HAWAII" feeling I felt under head coaches Bob Wagner and June Jones. I felt "LUCKY YOU LIVE HAWAII" because every nerve in my body filled with adrenalin and I felt uncontrollable excitement watching Colt Brennan, Chad Owens, Jason Elam, Travis Laboy, Asley Lelie, Devon Bess play championship, run and shoot football. I even started believing that one day the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors would be NCAA Division 1A Football Champions. I really felt "LUCKY YOU LIVE HAWAII." I'm beginning to get that "LUCKY YOU LIVE HAWAII" feeling ... on Sunday's because Tua Tagovailoa is a stud that makes Hawaii proud as he throws touchdown after touchdown, and has lead the Miami Dolphins to the top of the AFC East. And for your information, I felt "LUCKY YOU LIVE HAWAII" ... on Thursday when I visited Masa's Cafeteria in Mapunapuna and ordered their Thursday's special Hot Pastrami Sandwich with hot potato salad for the price of $13.50 plus tax. When I felt the weight and opened the top of my takeout box and saw Masa's Cafeteria's impressive, Thursday's special Hot Pastrami Sandwich for the very first time, my mouth started salivating and I forgot about all the hardships I experienced in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 and felt truly grateful and immediately thanked Buddha for helping me survive the pandemic and for striking a spark that rekindled the feeling that I was truly "LUCKY YOU LIVE HAWAII" ... on Thursday. And as I started getting to the last few bites of my Masa's Cafeteria Thursday's special Hot Pastrami Sandwich with hot potato salad, I started wishing that tomorrow (Friday) was Thursday so that I could eat this winnah Pastrami Sandwich with hot potato salad again and feel "LUCKY YOU LIVE HAWAII" ... on Friday. And then my mind started to wander and I started thinking that if Saturday was Thursday, I could go to Masa's Cafeteria and order their Thursday special Hot Pastrami Sandwich with hot potato salad and feel "LUCKY YOU LIVE HAWAII" .... on Saturday, instead of sitting through the misery of watching the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors play Air Force at the Clarence TC Ching Athletic Complex on Saturday. And just so you know that this was just a wandering daydream because Masa's Cafeteria is takeout only; serves lunch from 10:30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. Monday thru Friday and is closed on weekends. My normal work schedule prevents me from getting to enjoy Masa's food very often, but I did get to visit early this morning (10/28/23 ~06:00 a.m.). I walked up on whim and ordered from the ABSOLUTE FRIENDLIEST person who exuded all kinds of Aloha (all of this in a simple and quick interaction that she must do all day, everyday). I got the 2 eggs and bacon, and a Loco Moco to go. The wait was reasonable but this was not what made me think to create a review on yelp...it was the forethought they put into their "to-go" packaging. I got home, and upon opening my bag, #1, they had the 2 plates rubber banded to help keep them stacked while traveling. THEN (#2), opened the plate and again, the forethought they put into their work is OFF THE CHARTS! There was a top layer of my toast (comes with the order) and condiments that I 100% appreciated and WILL use! Then a sheet of parchment paper, then my meal. WAY TO GO MASA'S! The best way to order is get on their website and see what their Specials are from Monday thru Friday. My advice to you is call in your order ahead of time as they get crazy busy so you can just go inside and pick up your food. The only problem with the Website is that they need to update their prices because the Mix Plate price is $14.50 on the website but when I went pay for my Mix Plate is was just under $18. So I think they have to make some adjustments there. Nonetheless the food here is Amazing. Portions here are Huge and can definitely be shared by two people. Being located in an Industrial Area they sure know how to cater to those Kanack's that work in the area.
