Being of mixed race, I've been exposed to many cultures within my own family. Yet, one of my best memories was being dropped off with my sister to my grandparents house because we knew we would eat well with all the Okazuya foods in grandmas kitchen! Sometimes it was as simple as... Oh, the start of this review was written years ago and I never finished it! So long story short, Fukuya has been around since the 1930's and I've stopped by countless times over the years. Not my favorite Okazuya, but definitely one of the busiest with one of the largest selections! Authentic, convenient, & open before 5am! In the end, I highly recommend Fukuya for those that live in Hawaii with roots that go back generations to the plantation days. Best known for okazuya, ala carte bentos. They have 4 different sizes and they have a selection of pre-selected bento options if you don't want to make your own. The selection makes it perfect for all occasions. I really like their nori chicken. It's great since you can make you own and with all the variety. It can get busy but the staff is quick. The parking lot is small but since it is more of a grab and go, there is a lot of turnover for parking. read more

Fukuya is good, but unfortunately I will probably start frequenting other okazuyas. Be honest with you, it's just too expensive now. $8.50 for futo maki sushi The plate itself was $26. Every time we come, it seems like we're double charged for a single item. This time it was the ahi burger. We were charged for 2. The nature of okazuyas is that we make a plate, they total it up, and then we pay. But when the cashiers consistently miscalculate the plates, it adds up over time. For our recent picnic at Ala Moana Beach Park, we ordered 30 bentos and an assorted sushi platter to-go--and everything went off without a hitch. Hands down, the BEST "okazuya" where you can get the best home made food, aka "plate lunch" with SUCH VARIETY, mostly different, yet the same... daily. This is my second trip here from California and the last time I started chatting with a customer who lived in my neighborhood who was also visiting Hawaii at that time. Hahaha! I'm not sure what time these Aunties start preparing, since they open at like 5:30 a.m., but hope they know we truly appreciate it!! It's been awhile since I've been to Fukuya and will remain a fave spot. We lucked out with no line and an empty parking lot that we were afraid they were closed since it was a holiday but they were open! Sure enough right after we parked the parking lot was full and a line out the door. Other people may have thought they were closed too because you can't really see the Open/Closed sign from the street. Everything was delicious as usual with so many choices you can't get them all but can definitely come back. Everyone's really nice and they work quick. It's the rest of us who take long trying to pick what to eat. I loved everything I chose except for the garlic chicken was tough and hard to eat. But don't let that keep you away from this local favorite. My staple choices are nori chicken, nishime and vegetable tempura. Fukuya is a well known okazuya (ala carte options you choose to make your own "bento"). You can choose between pre-determined bentos (they assemble them after you order) or choose ala carte. It's really convenient and quick, even if there is a line. I enjoyed the nori chicken the most. I ate it fairly fresh so it still had a bit of crisp to the outside, which was nice. They have several styles of chicken, noodles, sushi (cone and maki), musubis and more. They also have some poke, which I wanted to try but would be out in the hot sun, so maybe next time. The og okazuya... Though this local biz has always been in my neighborhood I've never really given them a formal visit until this day that I just needed something for breakfast and have always know they open early and unlike many places that do so they're ready with all sorts of hot comforting foods that symbolizes what we all have grown to love. My only vise is that they don't have any prices on them and as my hungry eyes widen with the load of selection I did have the fear of how much it would all add up to but giving a care as it's taking care of the need to have something to start my day. You start with choosing the size of your take out box and there are three sizes as I went with the small and avoided anything fried for cross contamination worries so it was a couple of potato patties, hotdog, eggplant and shoyu chicken. I did also grabbed a small box for a work friend and total was $24 though I did appreciate the individual pricing the receipt shows it was a lot more than what I would've wanted to spend but in the end it was so comforting and delicious as we never get to enjoy something like this and resort to leftovers or instant frozen varieties. But, was stuck in Preorder line, took 30-45 minutes to get to counter. Not very efficient. Maybe better not to Preorder if going early anyway. Order form, could add to Preorder. Everything was already in containers small or large. For grab and go. Great idea. But since I Preordered, I couldn't change to the Regular line. I'm sure most of us love to choose ala carte foods for a takeout meal. A restaurant that offers local style Japanese cuisine foods is called an okazuya. In Honolulu, one of my favorite okazuyas is Fukuya. Fukuya is a family-owned and operated restaurant that is currently owned by Arrison Iwahiro. It was started by Arrison's great grandparents, Jihei and Tsuya Takayama in 1939 to provide lunches, called bentos, for men working in the Moiliili Quarry, now known as the University of HI lower campus. Arrison's grandparents took over Fukuya in 1965, and then his parents, Lorna and Edward Iwahiro, took over in 1975. With Arrison as its 4th generational owner, he helped out in the business since age 8 by cooking rice, frying chicken, and stir-frying noodles and chow funn and subsequently took over in 1999 when his parents retired. In the 1960's and 1970's, Fukuya was very popular in the catering business, doing weddings at churches and hotels. Then, their focus afterwards was providing buffet meals at funerals that included sushi, potato/mac salad, noodles, baked ham, shoyu chicken, chicken nishime, hijiki, mochi, and manju; however, after the pandemic, pre-made bentos became the norm. Home parties also became popular as part of Fukuya's catering business. Equally as popular today is their stand-alone takeout restaurant where customers just point to prepared foods that are placed in a takeout box for their lunch. Not only are the foods of high quality due to its appearance that would make you want to get them, but Arrison also notes that its popularity and success are due to the loyalty of past generations that continue to be a repeat business for them. What the future holds is uncertain for Fukuya, as with other okazuyas, Arrison's two daughters will have to make a decision whether to continue its legacy that requires them to prepare these foods during the wee hours of the morning, as well as high lease rents. Fukuya offers an extensive variety of items: noodles, chow funn, chicken, hash, musubi, tempura, nishime, burgers, fish, shoyu hotdog, namasu, tofu, shoyu pork, beef teriyaki, etc. Sometimes they may get fish from the local fish auction and offer dishes like baked/fried ahi and akule. Its signature dish appears to be the nori wrapped chicken, which is a seasoned seaweed wrapped around a chicken cutlet that is fried, and is very popular with the locals. One of my favorites is also the nori chicken, as the chicken is of a good size, very moist and juicy on the inside and crunchy on the outside, and is very flavorful due to the seasoned seaweed and marinated chicken. I also enjoy their sushi, gobo, chicken (mochiko, garlic, fried, Korean), and their sweet potato and veggie tempura, which are all so tasty! And don't overlook their desserts! I have only tried their colorful chi chi dango and can attest to its super freshness and flavorfulness, as they just melt in your mouth! Their homemade cookies, brownies, and manju look equally delicious. Service is efficient, and the line to order goes fast, as long as you know what you want. The server will ask you if you want a small or large container and then you just point what you want. Staff is friendly and patient in answering your questions. When ordering, be mindful that you have a running tab, so don't go overboard. Hours of operation are from Wed to Sun 6a to 2p, Mon/Tues closed (note that they may be one of the very few okazuyas that are open on Sunday). Go early, as popular okazu will sell out. Located in McCully on So. King St in the University area in McCully next to 7-Eleven, Fukuya has its own small parking lot of maybe 5 spaces. Street parking is available, but be aware of morning tow away times. Fukuya is my choice for a quick on-the-go takeout lunch, knowing that the food will be consistently delicious. Short line @ 0700hrs 1/4/25. Nice music playing while waiting for service. Clean customer area. New refrigerated case across the entrance with tukemono for purchase. Chowfunn was awful! Cold, like it was from the fridge and not fresh made. F- Potato croquette was so light and crispy I wish I ordered 2. A+x10 Shrimp tempura was also on the unmemorable side. I have had it better before. Shrimp inside was flat and overcooked. Very tough. C- Sweet potato tempura was very nice. Coating was crisp and the potato nice and soft. A+ x10 Cone sushi filling was a bit lacking inside the aburage shell. Great flavor without the aburage. With it, it's too sweet. I prefer musubi style. It's a little overwhelming your first time but the workers are really friendly and patient, even though this place can get really busy. The onigiris and fried chicken options are all really good, as well as their chicken long rice, pickled cucumber, and broccoli salad. It's a serving line almost cafeteria style, build your own plate, type of place, and it's priced by weight. Go early!! they're only open til 2. Parking stalls write in front and couple metered street parking. Can even park on Rabbit Rabbit tea side if get. What I love about Fukuya is the food is over warmers, very organized, nice layout and various foods. Stand in line, and the food is in order like all the different types of rice balls and noodles, then you get all your different entrees, meats and seafood, and the various sushi's right there on top of counter. My normal order would be furikake rice ball, teriyaki hamburger, teriyaki hotdog, nori-wrapped chicken (one of my faves) and the vegetable tempura (another one of my fave). Sometimes they even have cookies and mochi! As you stand in line waiting for your turn, you get to choose from many dishes which is then packed into a plate lunch or a bento and ready to go. The okazuyas you choose can be for your breakfast, lunch, or dinner. You create your own little bento meal from musubi, tempura, nori chicken, noodle, tofu hash, nishime, misoyaki butterfish, shoyu chicken, hotdog, hijiki, potato salad, manju, cookies, and so much more. Make sure to add Fukuya on your next stop to get your okazuya fix;) They are located at 2710 South King St. They are open from 6:00 to 2:00 pm from Wednesday to Sunday and close on Monday and Tuesday. It's my first time here but the young girl who helped me was nice and friendly. The best Okazuya on the island! Must go early because they end up selling out towards the ending! Nori Chicken, Hot Dog, Chow Fun, Plain Musubis, Shrimp Tempura, Fried Akule, Miso Butterfish, Spicy Ahi, Maki Sushi, and Mac Salad are all musts for me when I stop in!! The food is constantly being made throughout the day, until maybe the last 2 hours before closing. Most of the Aunty's have been there for a while, so they are quick to help you with packing your orders. Parking is very limited, but there is street parking so that's a plus!! The way I rate a good okazuya is based off of 5 things and in this specific order; nishime, cone sushi, fried chicken, chow fun, hash patty. These are the staples of a basic box lunch. This is my first time here and possibly the last time coming here. Finally got a weekday off and I was in the area this morning and have heard good things about Fukuya. Super excited to try this place out! Parking can be bit of a pain. There are tandem stalls in the front of the building and quite a few street stalls but beware of the times you can park there. Ordering is pretty straightforward. Bento or you pick what you want on your plate. Chow fun was plain and simple. Fried chicken was great with lots of flavor. Veggie tempura was chewy not crunchy. Wife had Bento D which was okay. Chow mein was bland. Now the bad part is we ordered the macaroni salad and it was spoiled! Yes SPOILED! It's too bad we drove to Ala Moana beach to eat our plates there or else I would've gone back and returned it. We ordered 2 macaroni and both had to be thrown away. Fukuya is a great place to get okazuya even though there are a few parking stalls in front! Buying a few items can all add up, but I like to be able to pick what I want. One of the popular item was the nori chicken. They are always busy, but one time I wanted spam musubi and they were willing to make two for me on the spot! I was pleased and only wait a couple of minutes! They have cookies and mochi too. The mochi was mostly made to order. They do funerals too and was very pleased with their catered services for my dad. We were planning to go with bentos with another vendor in Waipahu through the mortuary then had learned they don't have the same menu because new owners took over. We looked over the revised menu that was recently provided to them and learned when our funeral director were going to place the order on one of the two bentos offered, they raised their price two days prior by few dollars and the manager was not willing to accommodate us. The mortuary wasn't informed prior of the changed price. We and the funeral director were disappointed especially during this difficult time. We turned to Fukuya and decided to do catering than bentos, it turned out better with more food and mochi for the price! Although it was a small private servive, we had a few more relatives than expected so catering turned out better.
