The nori chicken is the best on the island! SO GOOD. Somehow, it stays crispy forever. I love that this place is so close to home

Haven't been here for a long time...maybe 20+ years. Heard about the Nori Chicken, Potato/Mac Salad and their Maki Sushi so decided to try it today. I ordered the following: * Nori Chicken $3.35 ea. - this was okay, not sure what the hype is * Shrimp Tempura $1.90 ea. - small shrimp, oily, more batter * Maki Sushi $1.10 ea. - nothing special, had better (1 shrimp and 1 maki sushi cut in half to give my husband & daughter to try...they felt the same way as I did) * Chow Fun $3.35 - not too much taste * Cone Sushi $1.90- again, not too much taste * Ahi Burger $3.50 ea. - this was very tasty...would order this again * Potato/Macaroni Salad 1/2# $5 - thought this was good too Tried some items from the other plates ordered: * Croquette $1.70 - crunchy outside, soft inside...very tasty * Spring Roll $1.90 - soggy and oily * Vegetable Tempura $1.75 - also soggy and oily * Shoyu Pork $3.10 - pork was soft and tasty As a whole, food is pricey compared to other delicatessen's I've been to. Coming here for years to grab a quick lunch from them or even to catering events. They always have delicious food and make it fresh. I especially love their mixed bento prices and their kids bentos, which are great. Parking can get kind of tight when it's busy, but they have a few stalls in front otherwise street parking. The staff has always been amazing and helpful. read more

Damn, As a black man, I love the way Hawaiian people and Korean people prepare and make fried chicken. I was impressed with the food and delicious vibe at Fukuya. But this is a Japanese style cooking restaurant. I love the Potato salad and Calamari, and a long with the Shrimp Tempura. We had fun eating here. They serve huge portions as well. Two words. Nori chicken! I was raised with nori chicken from Kawamoto's on the Big Island, but for some reason I just couldn't find nori chicken at the okazuyas in Oahu. Until I discovered Fukuya. Although it's much different from Kawamotos and Hilo Lunch Shop, it still has an iconic crispy outside and tender juicy inside. Absolute heaven. Thoroughly enjoyed the ahi burger and the potato hash too! The fried hash is a little sweet and the shrimp tempura is a little oily but both were still pretty good. Let me start by saying that Fukuya is no joke. They've been around since 1939 and they're one of the most popular okazuya places on the island! I was looking for a bento to take on the plane and decided to stop by Fukuya. Not only do they have prepared bentos that you can choose from, but they are also set up like a deli where you can pick and choose what you want and they place it all in a take-out container for you. In terms of food offerings, they have just about every type of Japanese cuisine and local foods that you can imagine, such as noodles/chow funn, nishime, chicken - (mochiko, nori, garlic, fried) onigiri's (various types) sushi, beef teriyaki, butterfish, hot dog, shrimp tempura, spring rolls, potato hash, musubi... and the list goes on. They even sell mochi, manju and cookies! This would be the perfect place to order catering trays for large parties or events. I arrived at 6:18am and was fortunate to get a parking spot, as there's only a few spots in front of their establishment. There were already customers inside, but the line wasn't too long yet. They're open from 6a-2p Wed - Sun, and closed on Mon. & Tues. For my bento, I decided on an onigiri for $1.90, noodles for $3.35, 1 fried chicken for $3.20, 1 spring roll for $1.90 and a small sushi bento for $5.80. Total came out to $17.96. A bit pricey, but I made all of my plane-mates jealous so it was worth it! The food was very good and a nice deviation from the Zippy's bentos that I typically take on the plane. First time here and I wanted one of everything! Local okazuya in Mo'ili'ili/University area. I went around noon. I hear the earlier you go, the more options you get to choose from. Everything sold ala cart. I got the chow fun noodles. Great flavor and the texture of the veggies were perfect, not soggy. The nori chicken was delicious. I really enjoyed the crunch and taste. The ahi poke was fresh and not frozen, sold by weight. Shrimp tempura more Okinawan style. Mapo tofu sauce spicy and sweet. I can't wait to go back and try more things. read more

I can't believe I never wrote a review for here before as we come here every couple of months to pick up okazuya but this review will be on the my time eating fukuya which was catering done by then. We had a Christmas party and we decided to order fukuya for 16 people. We got assorted sushi, chicken salad, chow fun, beef teriyaki, and shoyu pork. The had them do delivery and that worked out perfectly. Deliver to aiea was $60. I really liked the sushi and shoyu pork. Definitely will be back soon. read more

I haven't had their plate lunch food in about 2 years, since it wasn't that tasty--hence the 1 star reduction--but I might be willing to give it another try based on the most recent reviews. I came here recently to get a tuna maki sushi roll for a family member who had been craving it, and it didn't disappoint. I have a feeling I'll be coming back to get more in the near future. The price was a little steep, over $8 for the roll, but not many places make this kind of maki sushi roll anymore, so it's a compromise I'm willing to make. Normally there's a line out the door when I've come here in the past, but this time I was able to walk right in without waiting. Only one person came in after me, which was kinda shocking, but it may have had something to do with the rainy weather. Lots of places seemed to be way less crowded due to the weather. Lucky me! I'll be back to try the food again...maybe. We'll see! read more

They open at 6am. I go there before we leave town to pick up okazuya for the plane ride. Usually get there by 630am. I am usually not alone. Maybe 5 other people queued. Decide which size. Go down the line and pick what I want from what they have. Nori chicken is mandatory. The ladies are very nice and helpful. I never know what things are called. Just how they taste. So lots of pointing going on my side. The ambiance is very helpful and comforting familiar. First time I thought about buying a tshirt for son but they didn't have his size. Next time, I'll ask again. When we broke them out on the plane, the flight attendant said "that looks a lot better than what we have to offer" She wanted to know where it was from and where it was located :-) Maybe I'll see her there one day read more

2022 Okazuya Review #2 Living most of my days on the west side, I'd never been to Fukuya until recently. I've driven by numerous times over the years but the limited parking and line have always deterred me, well it was finally time! Arrived at 9 am on Saturday morning and there were a couple parking spots open and there were only 2 people outside so it was starting off great! Food: Went with some of my standard dishes, Shiso Musubi, Cone Sushi, Kinpira, Chicken, Konbu Maki, Omelette, and Veg Tempura. Since my wife was joining me this morning I also ordered some of her favorites like Chow Fun, Kobocha, Nishime, and a few others. The portions were generous and all the dishes were great. The fried chicken stood out as it was a nice boneless pieced cooked perfectly. The veg tempura was not overly breaded, and the Musubi/Sushi rice was cooked just right. Service: Solid, efficient service by the workers. Step, order your food, move down the line, order more food, and pay. Everything went smoothly and the staff were courteous, fast, and accurate. Atmosphere: Small parking lot, some folks park next door if it's early but there are loads of warning signs if the businesses are open in the lot next door, I'm not sure how strict the enforcement is but early morning does not seem to be an issue. The line misleading since only 2 or 3 customers can be in the store at a time, the line really looks longer than it really is. On this morning being third in line meant a wait of no longer than 5 or 6 minutes before I entered the doors. Value: Okazuya food means comfort food, not inexpensive food though it may fool some people who don't expect it. Standard pricing here, our two plates came to $36 so in line with what I'd expect to pay. It was enough for us to stretch this to a second meal so to me it's worth it! Overall: it's just location #2 but so far this is my top choice. I wish Yelp would allow .5 stars as I'd give them 4.5 leaving room for that perfect place that warrants a full 5 stars. I do think they deserve this rating though given a combination of portion, quality, and service, I'd definitely return in the future for more of their food! read more

I live in Kaimuki but haven't been here in ages, mostly because it's an okazuya and I'm 100% not a morning person! Life stress is running my ability to sleep in but I turned the negative into a positive by coming here BEFORE they opened. Despite the sign which says that they open at 6am, at 545, the warmers were full, the shelves were stacked tall with food, and three grandparent types were having full on conversions with the workers -- who were happy to sell you food extra early. There were so many choices and now I know that the nori chicken, garlic chicken, and chichi mochi are not urban myth but they actually exist lol! I value my sleep but the next time I'm up too early (or out too late) I'll remember to stop by Fukuya again. :) I love these old school places -- literally our plantation heritage on a plate. read more

Grew up coming to this place as a kid and it is still just as ono all grown up! Definitely a favorite okazuya place in the area. Some of my favorites include the ahi burger (the best!), nori wrapped chicken, furikake ahi, gobo, nishime, and shiso musubi (if wanting a simpler option). My eyes are always bigger than my stomach when ordering but it's always worth it! Wish I could try everything each time I stop in. If you want their mochi (which is also so yummy!) make sure to go earlier in the day because they often sell out. There is not much seating inside but that never was an issue for us since we were always picking up to go anyways. Parking is limited with about 5-6 stalls out front which are frequently filled. Luckily, there is a public parking lot next door for local businesses that you can use if needed. I'm never disappointed when stopping by this place when coming home from the mainland and I always look forward to making at least one trip here. read more

This is our goto okazuya. The food is consistently good, but beware your eyes can definitely be bigger than your stomach. My goto items are chow fun, nori wrapped chicken, hot dog, and fried akule. The parking is a little tight so sometimes I just park next door since I know it will be fast. The service is always good and fast and everyone is so nice there. When looking for 300 bentos for a funeral scheduled on a Monday, most of the Japanese restaurants were closed, including FUKUYA. Fortunately they provide catering on that day for Funerals only and had what we wanted at a reasonable price! From the initial call with Joanne, throughout the ongoing email communication with Arrison, and then upon the final delivery that day - everything was professional, efficient and all with a friendly, personal, and caring touch. Long over due.. Been coming here since small kid time. Love it! This one is prob the most well known okazuya place and I'm glad I live near by. Parking is right off of south king street and right next to where sushi king used to be. If there is no parking right in front I just park in the lot next to it no problem. They are limiting people so there is mostly always a line outside. I have no self control when I come here and just want to order everything then spend $20+ on a plate lol! I was pleasantly surprised that they had quite an assortment of food left at 1:30ish! So, I lucked out with 2 inarisushi, 1 shiso musubi, chow funn, a tofu patty, cup of namasu, & gobo kinpira. I was hoping for the old style chow funn noodled (dried Hula Brand), but it was still yummy. Their inari is not real wet & has a delicate flavor, but ono! Everything else was yummy, too & no, I dud not eat that all at one sitting. I got to eat some for dinner! We also love their vegetable tempura, mochiko chicken, fried chicken, musubis, mac salad, and hot dog. I can say that the best thing about Fukuya is their traditional flavors and consistency. For those who don't know okazuya, it's pretty much make your own bento! It's fun to customize your plate! SERVICE- The workers are friendly, efficient, and hard working. Waiting in the long line outside is WORTH IT. You will get quality food and a reasonable price. AMBIANCE- There is no inside seating. Food is behind the glass window and away from guests breathing spreading germs. PARKING is a little tricky. There are only about 6-7 stalls but there is also street parking available. Threw a Yakudoshi lunch for my hub's with his fam. Initial plan, pre-covid was to go out, but since that plan foiled, decided I wanted individually packed plates so there wasn't any contamination with a buffet style lunch. Fukuya is super easy to pre-order and pick up (no need wait in line). The parking lot is tiny, but easy enough to park real quick in the Sushi King lot and just run over. Ordered plates with ume musubi, chow fun, mochiko chicken, teri meatball, shrimp tempura, akule, nishime, and namasu. Got a special one for the hubs with shiso musubi, and one for myself with half the food. Also ordered 2 keiki bento for the dinner party with my fam. Slight miscommunication when I placed the order and was 1 plate short and just a single shiso musubi. Ai-ya. Of course I didn't realize it until I got home. Called and they said they would put a rush on it. Sent the hubs out with some cash so I could finish setting up. They did not let him pay for it...and it wasn't even their fault! I knew it was just miscommunication and was more than happy to pay for it. But they would not charge, and even gave him some mochi. Can't beat that customer service! Called ahead to order my NYE dinner! They werent available for 12/31 pickup so i had to pick it up on 12/30. They were only doing over the counter ordering and mochi pickup on NYE. Did the preset menu since it had everything i needed. Min order is for 15ppl, so was def a TON of food for just the 4 of us Food was almost done when i went to pick it up at my time. The day has come...I finally was able to try...FUKUYA'S. I never knew about this place until recently. I know some people who frequent here, and so I wanted to check it out for myself. One day my husband and I stopped by to try them out. Here is what we ordered: Plate #1 (Mine)-chow funn, egg omelette and nori chicken. The chow funn and egg omelette was good, but the nori chicken was my favorite. It was very tasty! Plate #2 (Daughter)-chow funn and garlic chicken. "Garlic chicken was good." Plate #3-(Husband)-chow funn, garlic chicken, veggie lumpia, veggie tempura. "Everything was ok." Maki sushi- it was good. Taste like any other maki sushi. Hot dog maki (Daughter)-"I like it...it's good." Overall, the food was good. The prices were pretty high and the portions were on the small side. We paid about $40.00 for our lunch.
