My family has been regular customers of this okazuya for many years and came often with our parents. We are now senior citizens ourselves. We love the consistently good local okazuya food and the many choices and options. This review concerns their customer service and the quality of their funeral bento. My mother recently passed and one of her last requests was to serve Fukuya food at her Celebration of Life. We had scheduled the date of the celebration which was to be at our family home. When we contacted Fukuya, we found out that on the date of the celebration, Fukuya was closed for renovations, re-opening the day afterwards. When we called, the restaurant apologized but let us know that they were unable to cater due to the kitchen closure. But we had also sent an email request as well and the manager/owner read the email and let us know that they would make an exception and would cater for us since it was a celebration of life. Fukuya had all the funeral bento delivered to our home on time on the designated date, the food was just cooked and warm, delivery staff was friendly and efficient. Our relatives raved about the food. My family cannot thank Fukuya enough for their kindness, for helping us fulfill my mother's last wish and for their excellent service. Okazuya in Honolulu, Hawaii... It's amazing that this was my first visit to the famous Fukuya. I've known about this place since college time when I was a Student Helper at the State Capitol. My boss would bring goodies for us from Fukuya. It was such a treat! I also knew about Fukuya from many Memorial Services. The platters of colorful mochi, trays of maki sushi, namasu, macaroni salad, fried chicken, and shoyu pork were always a welcomed sight after visiting grieving friends and family who lost a loved one. Yes, food in Hawaii is such an emotional thing. It really connects us as we share a bit of our culture through the sharing of food. Okazuya cuisine originated from the plantation days when people had to bring their lunch to the fields to eat. It's such good stuff that it carried down through the generations! I finally got a chance to go to Fukuya on a Saturday when there was a line wrapped in front of the building and around the parking lot. Because of social distancing, the line seemed longer than it actually was. Three customers at a time were serviced inside the clean, bright shop. The entire wall on the right side of the room was filled with food choices! I selected my favorites: cone sushi (inari), ume musubi (preserved plum), crab cake (something more modern), nori wrapped chicken (something fancy), Furikake chicken (something trendy), green beans, shrimp tempura, and sweet potato tempura. My takeout container was full! I also got a small container of mochi: chichi dango, red bean, and peanut butter! Mmm!!! The ladies behind the counter were efficient and sweet. The one who helped me gave me an extra sweet potato tempura because the one i originally got was on the smaller side... thank you! I was so happy to finally come to this legendary restaurant! To add to my joy, I had a free parking space right in front! (There's only 5 spaces.) Metered street parking is also available. The food was everything I had hoped for and more! Four and a half! Very nostalgic okazuya that is still around and hope it will be for years to come! I love all the foods because of all the HARD work behind each choice. When I make a bento I know what I have to do to cook and put it together, so going somewhere where the choices are so many is just great. I feel like I'm a big kid going to a candy store but it being food instead. Always liked chow fun because it's a fat noodle. There is something fun to stuff your mouth with a fork full of noodles and it sticking all around your mouth. Somehow I don't get the same satisfaction with thin noodles. The vegetable tempura is so tasty although it's not hot anymore. But don't let it fool you, the flavor is good and the crunch is still there! Mochiko chicken and all the different assorted chickens are tasty and there is a flavor for everyone. I love shiso musubi because of the sour and saltiness of it. It's just blended perfectly. Gobo and eggplant sides are delicious too. I just can't say anything bad about this place, however be better at ordering than I. Know exactly what you want in order or the lady might get mad like she did with me. Lol. Sorry. I haven't ordered okazukya in so long!!! Starches first, then move on. We found this place trying to look for bento boxes! It's located in its own little area, with parking in front. They open really early so it's nice to get some stuff in the early am before heading out for the day! It's only a take-out place so no dining. Staff were efficient and kind. They have selected bento boxes that you can get, or you can make your own. We got a big box to go, with soam musubi, egg omelet, chicken, hot dog, and many other things. Everything were pretty good! It's always a difficult task choosing what you want - but I think I've gotten it down to a handful (or two handfuls) of favorites. I've been to Fukuya twice, and both times the food has been great. Both times there was a line, which means the food is good! Everything I've had has been good. I always love nori chicken, and their chow fun is good too. I also enjoyed their shrimp tempura, shiso musubi, and fried fish. So many great flavors that you can't get everywhere! A few complaints: - Parking is tough. Small private parking lot and limited paid street parking. - Some food that should be crispy isn't crispy like fried chicken and crab cakes. Seems like there could be a way to keep these foods at the textures they should be. - Prices seem high. I'm from Hilo, and okazu prices are lower at Asami's, Kawamoto's, and Hilo Lunch Shop. In Hilo, okazu can be a regular meal, but on Oahu maybe it's just something special every now and then. All of that being said, I will be back. I went to Fukuya for the first time today and fell in love. I've always seen drool worthy photos but never made myself go until today. Everything was SO good. I am so happy I went. The items I chose: Crab cake Ahi patty Shrimp tempura Nori chicken Chow fun Shiso rice musubi My boyfriend got the same items plus: Shoyu pork Fried ahi belly It was a good $30 we spent but so worth it. Pro-tip, come early for a good/fresh selection of the popular stuff. That said, we came a little after noon and had an okay selection. I got the korean chicken (good), the fried tofu (meh- really hard batter that maintained its structure after I peeled it off), gobo (good), cucumber (my favorite), and the nishime (solid). There are a lot of fried food options and you have to be careful of what you choose because it all piles on up on your plate and adds up. I primarily go for their miso butter fish and nori wrapped chicken. Make sure you get here early or else you'll find all the good items gone. I made this mistake a few times searching for a good deal on their miso butter fish. You can get a nice fat slab of miso butter fish for 10 dollars or less. There will be a bunch of bones in it but that's fine. It's a lot better than spending more than double the price for miso butter fish at a Japanese restaurant. Ok this is a place that should be added to a historical landmark in hawaii. Unless you are local, you probably won't understand this place or food. Okazuya, which this place is, basically is a japanese delicatessen. In the old plantation days, workers would need food that they could eat in the fly and didn't require refrigeration, thus this was created. Now when I arrived here in 1990, there was plenty of these places left, but now they are dying...which why this place is awesome.....it's truly home cooked comfort food. I assume this is family owned because everyone behind the counter is different ages. The food is so good and basic. I cannot tell you how many times I've looked at Dan O.'s ono looking okazuya pics from the various okazuya joints he regularly goes to...........which led me to this old mom & pop okazuya joint called - "Fukuya" in the Moiliili neighborhood. Yes, gang...........I've had food from Fukuya's before, as I swear I ate some of their delicious okazuya food at funerals, but I've never physically went to Fukuya until today. Finding Fukuya is not too hard, as this little mom & pop okazuya joint is located in the Moiliili neighborhood, just next door from Sushi King & the U.S. Post Office area. Parking is very limited, as I believe they only have 5 or 6 stalls in front of the business............if you can't get one of them free parking stalls, not to fret gang, as there is metered street parking along the road fronting this okazuya. Upon walking into the joint, I see a small line so I waited patiently for my turn to get at da grindages. As I got to the ordering counter, I was overwhelmed at all the different items they offered, so I decided to make it simple for myself & ordered a Bento............Bento "B" to be exact. What's in the Bento "B" for ($11.00) bucks? Let me give you the breakdown, as you get the following items - 1. Plain Musubi - Basically a rice ball....... 2. Mac Salad - Don't ask.......Bruddah Fran no likey mayonnaise! 3. Noodles (You can pick Chow Fun or Chow Mein) - I got da Chow Fun.......buggah was ono! Gotta get some starch, no? 4. Fried Akule - I thought I was getting a deep fried shrimp, but rest-a-sure it was fish.......small piece, wish I had something to dip it in. 5. Nishime - Automatic when going to an okazuya! 6. Shoyu Chicken - I'm in love! Check out da pics my friends! And for good measure, & for good luck in the new year, I got a Nori wrapped Frrrrried Chicken for ($2.95). What can I say about the grindages???? If you like old skool mom & pop okazuya, then this is the place for you! Fukuya Deli & Catering is probably the most popular and well known okazuyas otherwise known as a Japanese delicatessen. They have been serving up their awesome food for over 80 years in Honolulu. Their traditional okazuya style is what makes Fukuya a regular favorite among locals here in Hawaii. Personally, I eaten there for over 30 years and is always a winner for me. My personal favorites is the mac salad and fried chicken. They have such a large assortment if items and everything is so ono (delicious in Hawaiian)I liked their food so much that I got my parents to get deli pans mac salad and sushi for my high school graduation party back in the day. They food is still the same as from my childhood. Their location does have parking, but the area has heavy traffic. Not hard to find or get to, just got to watch the road. It's the perfect place to pick up some stuff for an office party or potluck, but getting your own plate lunch bento is the best. read more

Great staff! I ordered 14 half size take away containers to make bentos for my daughter's softball team! Each one I ordered had the furikake musubi, Korean chicken, 1 pc hot dog, 1 pc shrimp tempura. The best time of the year to come to Fukuya is during Girls and boys day! They have the ultimate best mochi ever! I always look forward to their mochi assortment during this time! Wish we could have dined there though. At least they accept Visa and MasterCard. We came here on a Sunday around noon. They have a private lot that you can park at right in front. When you enter, you stand in line to order. You can pick from preset bento packages or pick and choose what you want from what's still available. A few items were already sold out when we arrived. The lady in front of us took the last Crab Cake and that was something I was eyeing out. It's ok, I still ordered a bit of everything to sample. Everything is very cost friendly so ordering a lot won't hurt the wallet. The food was pretty tasty. It's different from what I normally eat but a good different. I ordered the Chow Funn (I had the last order so they gave me everything left from the tray), Mochiko Chicken, Ahi Burger, Croquette, Shrimp Tempura and Garlic Chicken (I believe that's what she said). No taste just oily and greasy. Nori chicken - WINNAHA 5 STARS. Tasty and flavorful, not too sweet. Loved it. Potato croquette - Pretty breading outside. Inside taste too sweet, overpowers any other taste. Junk. Hash ball - 0 stars. Burnt, overly sweet like eating a potato doughnut. Dog loved it lol Nevah again. I am a big fan of this place. Someone brought me a bento and it was rocking!!!! I asked from where and they told me Fukuya. Being a musician for many decades, this place was never open when I needed it to be. I mean, it closes at 2p! Well, due to "changes" I am up a lot earlier now and this place is available to me. I think it's great, and so far is better than all the other places I have tried. I haven't tried every place, but man.... it's hard to see how they could be much better than this. I pretty much liked everything I ate. Now I realize that part of this is being surprised and getting it FREE, so as a Yelp maniac, I made sure that I hit this place up right away to test what it tastes like when I pay $$ for the food. hahahahaha Well, it was great. I love nishime and it saddens me that the only time I really eat it is at funerals. Think about it..... But this time, I got a serving and it was good! Their nori chicken is so good! Tender inside and juicy. The chow fun seemed bland but take a serving with all of the ingredients and it is tasty and not over seasoned. The corned beef hash didn't have a lot of corned beef but it was still good. The teri chicken is very delicious and not overly sweet. The inari sushi was huge! My wife said Hilo Lunch shop is better - but we are not in Hilo are we???? We need to make do with what we have. I mean, obviously Honolulu has "problems" with food i.e. naming ice shave --- shave ice. I mean.... it's ICE SHAVE not shave ice. Anyway....... I've been a fan of Fukuya for many years, but more so, as we cope with "stay at home, work at home" during Covid19. They open at 6am, but usually open earlier. They have implemented safety measures and since I get there before 6am, it's a great start to my morning. There is a huge and varied selection of Okazuya, everything delicious! I am a huge fan of their Maki Sushi, Nori Wrapped Chicken and Potato Mac Salad and their Almond Cookies.
