This cute okazuya has been around since I was a child! I absolutely love it! The recipes for their Korean chicken, mochiko chicken has not ever changed! Still tastes great after all these years! I stood in line of about 6 people In front of me so I waited patiently outside and a long line formed behind me as well. As I made my way inside, the ladies there are always so helpful and friendly! Great staff! I ordered 14 half size take away containers to make bentos for my daughter's softball team! Each one I ordered had the furikake musubi, Korean chicken, 1 pc hot dog, 1 pc shrimp tempura. The best time of the year to come to Fukuya is during Girls and boys day! They have the ultimate best mochi ever! I always look forward to their mochi assortment during this time! Oh the nostalgia! Growing up, when it was field trip day at school, my parents always woke me up early to go to fukuya to pick out my lunch. A trip to Fukuya was a special treat, not a daily occurrence, so every time was a happy time. Fukuya gets 2 stars: one for the food, and another for taking credit card. Sounds crazy I know, let me explain. This place is a staple, probably one of, if not the most popular Okazuya in town, and for good reason. The food is very good. I would say nothing at Fukuya is bad as far as how it tastes. I love the nori chicken, chow fun, ahi patty, cone sushi, meatballs, and most of what they serve. What get's me is the portion sizes, pricing, and the long wait. Everything at Fukuya is pretty expensive for Okazuya offerings. To be full and fill a plate you will have to spend at least $20-30 per plate, which to me is crazy. Most places in town you can do the same for a lot less. The other part of going to Fukuya that gets me is the line. It's always out the door and does not move very fast. You can easily spend 30 minutes in this line, in fact I've never seen the place without a line. Which is good for business, but maybe they need to hire more staff to help the line move faster. In the end I think it's faster, cheaper, and better to drive to Gulick for Okazuya food cravings than waiting for an overpriced plate at Fukuya. read more

One of my all-time favorite okazuya: awesome food, has parking and they take credit cards! My go-tos here are the rice balls (shiso and furikake), the nori wrapped chicken, hash patties and the shrimp tempura. The girl that helped me was not the friendliest, but at least I got all of the things that I needed. I even asked her for two small containers on the side and she gave me those with rubber bands for no extra charge. My total for 10 pieces was almost $20. I've been searching all of hawaii for the best poké and while I didn't come here for the poké I think I may have found my top poke. This is the BEST POKÉ I've had by a long shot. The fish is incredibly fresh and I hear the chef takes the freshness of his fish very seriously. The poké bursts with savory flavor and is creamy with plenty of tobiko that gives it an exciting texture. With all of their other delicious food, fukuya is not especially known for their poké. One of my first stops when I'm in Hawaii is Fukuya okazuya! I dropped my girls off at Hanauma Bay and drove straight to get some yummies at 7:30! I love their nori wrapped chicken, potato hash, chow fun, potato salad, and nori musibis! I would get more but then I wouldn't be able to finish it. This is one of my favorite places in Hawaii! The mission: find the best old school okazyua on Oahu. Japanese name, yes but purely of Hawaii origin dating back to the early 1900's plantation village days. It is a fusion of dishes and flavors of Japanese, Okinawan, Chinese, and Filipino immigrants using the make shift, limited ingredients at the time. While today there are bizarre "additions" (WTF is a hotdog maki roll) a few generations old shops keep the tradition. Stop 1: Fukuya (since 1939) Maki sushi - well compacted, not too strong, sweet vinegar rice. Well seasoned kampyo (gord), seasoned tuna, egg, cooked watercress but no dried shrimp (sub fishcake). Inari (AKA cone sushi) - sweet soy seasoned age cone, not overly wet. Well seasoned rice. Konbu maki (seasoned seaweed wrapped pork)- Well braised ingredients. Dashi konbu wrap therefore tougher. Sweet soy flavor throughout. Fried chicken - well seasoned, slightly overcooked giving it a crispy skin. Sadly, no ginger flavor. Tempura - baking powder leavened, slightly sweet, yellow food coloring added, heavy, oil sponge with slight crispness. Old school at its best. Mixed veg, sweet potato good. Shrimp will make you laugh. So much fluffy batter surrounding an overcooked, tiny shrimp. Odds and ends - Very good kimpira gobo with good sesame flavor (no spice heat), good miso black cod, horrible hash (more potato than corned beef), strange "inventions" such as nori wrapped, soy glazed fried chicken (bitter taste), bizarre hotdog maki roll (so wrong on so many levels). Quick and patient counter service willing to help the okazuya noob. Horrible parking (good luck). Does it make the grade? Kinda. The food taste like cooks not the family who grew up with the food, are following recopies causing the food to lack pure authenticity. OK with enough "modern" creative inventions to satisfy the next generation. read more

Fukuya mochi is the best! This past Friday I went to Fukuya to pick up several packs of mochi that I ordered for girls day. It's my daughter's first girls day and I guess the tradition is that you're supposed to buy mochi for your family. Ordering from them was quite easy. I told them that I needed packs for girls day and they knew what I was talking about. There were different sized packs also. They came in 3, 6, or 9. I got the nine pack. I also ordered a special one for myself. Fukuya has flavored mochi so I got some of those. I got lemon, orange, original, and melon. When I went to pick it up, it was all set for me and arranged nicely in a box. The nine packs that I bought had three pink ones, three white ones, and three green ones. The special one that I ordered also had great presentation. The taste of the mochi at Fukuya is like none other. It just melts in your mouth. The flavored mochi really tasted like the flavor. It was so delicious. I got a nine pack variety pack and my husband and I ate the whole thing that day. I kind of wish I bought more for myself... In addition to the mochi pickup, I had to get some lunch since it was lunch time. I can't ever pass up an okazuya place. I got a furikake musubi, nishime, mochiko chicken, and chow fun. All of it was so tasty. I really liked the chow fun. Possibly one of my favorites now. And the mochiko chicken had good flavor. So if you're on king street and want to check out a great mochi place and okazuya, stop by Fukuya, you won't regret it. read more

Quick! Off da top of your head name ten traditional okazuya in Honolulu. How about nine? How about eight? Ok you get da point. Like so many other traditional types of places to go to get your kau kau fix, there aren't too many of them left. In the University/Moiliili area the surviving and long time traditional okazuya is Fukuya. They are a class institution on King street and offer all the favorites one expects like shrimp, vegetable and potato tempura, shoyu chicken, fried chicken, nishime, mac salad, namasu, musubi, the usual suspects and a whole lot more. The place is clean, they have parking and are located right off of King street with a relatively easy dash in, dash out configuration. The counter gals are always pleasant and patient, it's like when you were a kid in a candy store and you had so many choices to choose from-grinds overload. On a recent visit I saw that they had a baked potato salad that had bacon and sour cream- yeow! But they were sold out so that's something to get next time. And the cookies. They make good cookies and you can by them by the jar. Cookie Monster would be in cookie heaven at Fukuya. So recently I ordered shrimp tempura, fried chicken, baked fish, nishime, namasu and an assorted sushi pack. The shrimp tempura was what I normally see- a shrimp of average size that tasted good. The fried chicken was classic okazuya style, nice crispy skin, soft and meaty inside. Everything ordered was pretty good except for the baked fish. Seemed like the mayo quantity they used was too much and made it seem like you were eating baked mayo with chunks of fish inside. Everything else was pretty tasty and satisfying. The pricing seems to be high and comparable pricing would be lower at other places. As Sistah Nat says, "everything adds up quickly" so choose wisely my friends or you could be taking out a second mortgage (slight exaggeration :). But for the variety of selection that is offered at Fukuya and a pretty central Honolulu location , it's no wonder they run out of many items by early afternoon on many days. Fukuya is by no means the best Okazuya in Hawaii but this Moiliili institution is always an option when hunger drives you to look for Japanese kau kau when a regular plate lunch just won't do. read more

Nothing was like stand out "wow" but it was all top quality Okazuya food for a good price. The one thing that was bad was that they charged me for someone else's order! I first reviewed Fukuya seven years ago and wanted to post an update. Having had the opportunity to check out seven other okazuyas recently to compare. Gotta say, "I STILL LOVE FUKUYA!" They're my All Time Favorite okazuya- despite the price, for convenience, parking, variety, and taste! Fukuya has a great mix of your old favorites like namasu and new items such as poke and shortbread cookies. Their vegetable tempura is the best, you can taste the veggies and crunch/taste of sugar in the tempura dough- at too many others you just taste the oil. Their offerings have a very traditional taste to them, just like how obachan used to make them. A lot of okazuyas don't open on the weekends or if they do, open later at 8 am. Fukuya is open on the weekend and weekdays at 6 am (closed Mon-Tue), perfect for picking up something for a dive or a day at the beach on the weekend. I'm pretty lucky to have a neighborhood okazuya within walking distance, I try to take advantage a couple of times a month. Definitely repeat, treat yourself and check them out! read more
