I've never had a desire to deviate from my usual order because it is THAT good (and I'm usually someone who likes to try new items). For about $16 you get a heavily portioned plate with two scoops of rice, mixed green salad, asparagus, and a nicely cooked ahi steak. The garlic are actual cloves that have been cooked long enough to soften them and take away that bite without removing the garlicky goodness. The bomb sauce adds a bit of creaminess to round out the plate. They're a bit of a hole in the wall, takeout ideally due to the limited parking in front and seating. Menu is vast and they are open late/early. You can even get lobster here! For the prices, you'd easily pay $30 for the seafood options and portions at fancier establishments. K 1:30 I placed my order for saimin/tuna fish sandwich was like $13.00 and wonton min $12.00 and large sprite $3.25. So gotta wait but asked for my sprite first. Dang the sprite tasted like it was warm and dirty lines. K so my order was called I said can I also get my saimin(?) he said what, I repeated I had saimin/tuna fish. He no. But like said wait checked my receipt they charged me the ma fish sandwich at $6.75 and said you like order one saimin, No....... K all the whistle I am waiting I no feel good and all I wanted to get my saimin wonton min and go home. Wait I kinda pissed cause now I gotta cook and I Neva like cause I no feel good. The sandwich tastes like a plastic chopping board. I since they changed owners I really haven't gone I feel good not as good as before but try different things to see if a different out comes happens but local. I ate here on a Sunday early morning. Rather I should say that I ordered my plate lunch and took it home. There are tables and bench style seats off to the side of the restaurant. They were all taken by what looks like an after party crowd. Maybe they just came from dancing or just drinking in a bar. They were loud and a bit intoxicated. Ok back to what you're really here for. The food. I ordered the furikake ahi. It comes with mixed greens and asparagus. There also is some "bomb sauce". It's nice and creamy with a slight hint of heat. The furikake ahi was nicely prepared. It wasn't overcooked. It was done almost perfect. I like to see some rawness in the middle but it was close. It was really good and I was quite surprised. The asparagus too was really good. It wasn't overcooked where it's mushy or undercooked where it's hard. Prepared perfectly. I'm not a veggie person but the dressing was really good. Not exactly sure what type of dressing it was but it came with it. So no Thousand Island, Ranch, French, Italian or your Oil and Vinegar. It was really good. I just wish they gave a little more. Overall it was a really good and satisfying meal. It compares well with a restaurant like Nicos. Just not the same atmosphere and you're probably going to wanna take it home to eat. Lots of parking in the very early morning as every place else is closed. They are open 24 hours. A rarity after covid came and went. So if you're looking for someplace open late night or early morning serving a good furikake ahi this is your place. Give them a try. It's worth the price at under $20. There are many other offerings to choose from and will probably try something else from here. They also do offer a mixed plate where you can have two choices off their regular menu board. This morning stopped to have a quick breakfast at the old Diners in Kalihi . It's now called Upscale Hawaii . It's funny the new name it's the same old Diners . Maybe the menu change a little but same ordering counter limited tables with the cement seating like I remembered over 20years ago lol . I had their breakfast special not bad @ $9.95 2 eggs, rice, choice of meats , I decided on Vienna sausage and they gave 7 pieces very generous I've been to places they either gave between 4-5 . It's been a while since I've eaten at Diners. I wanted hamburger steak but decided to eat something healthier. I got the furikake ahi and it was good not dry. I also got the furikake salmon, chicken katsu and chicken katsu curry. The only thing was our took a long time cuz it was busy (on a Friday night) and there was only one person in the front and one person doing the cooking. But we didn't mind the wait. Perfect, cuz not much places open late.. so u know what I mean... diners it is lol They are located next to Kapālama post office, right on king street, no can miss it. They have couple outdoor seating tables, but I would just take out and bring home to eat and pig out in the comfort of my own home lol If there's anything they could improve on would be customer service. The bunch of times I went was always different personality. Little overdue of a review but here we go lol.. Diners has been a staple for my family & I , and I'm sure many other families on island for YEARS. Our family's go to was always Cheeseburger and yellow sauce with fries! As time and society evolved , so did Diners, since they became "Upscale" and added more things to their menu. I have tried their Grilled lobster plate more than once from their Upscale menu in the past and I think during that time it was $15? Not sure if it's still that price, but for that price it was a winner! Lobster + salad and rice ? What more can you ask for since that's basically a steal in today's economy. Anyway , I was in the area recently and decided on diners for dinner. I was really craving ahi katsu, unfortunately my go to spot was already closed since I decided on dinner a little after 8pm ish? So I thought .. well diners has ahi katsu supposedly .. why not give it a try. I wasn't expecting much since it was Diner's BUT needless to say.. their ahi katsu is DELICIOUS. Seasoned well and cooked to perfection! I love the sauce they drizzle on the katsu. I should've asked for extra sauce on the side had I known it was gonna be yummy! But that's something to keep note of on my next visit in the future. I definitely would order this plate again! And continue to adventure out on their menu lol. A tip to keep in mind : they do have signs posted by their windows to be patient when ordering because they do take a bit to make and give you your order since they are always short staffed. And there's normally alot of people waiting or ordering since lots come to this establishment right after work or in between work or just simply there for a bite to grab. So prepare to wait .. but sometimes you can be lucky where it doesn't take as long. It does truly depend on time and the day I guess. Also one last thing, my personal opinion , I think Diners is worth grabbing food from. Whether you're hungry , in the area or wanting to grind. The portion sizes are also pretty solid. It kept me satisfied. The food came out pretty quick which I was surprised about considering how many people were in front of me. The Nana at the counter was very friendly and she had a nice smile when she told me that they ran out of eggs at 06:45 am!!! Oh well!!! Plenty of other menu items to choose from (I got the Kalua Pork/Lau Lau combo). The pictures of their garlic steak items look so good I need to come back again. This used to be Diners Drive Inn in my early teen memories and needs a refresh ASAP. However, it would then lose its character and its essence. So, I show up at a primarily local drive-in in Kalihi, at 2 o'clock in the morning. I'm just visiting, but I was stationed here in the past. I was cool with all the locals, and they were cool with me. That's the way it's supposed to be. Even at 2 o'clock in the morning, the place was packed. The menu was large, with both Asian and local favorites. I had the local plate, with a Laulau, Kalua pig, as well as Mac salad and rice. I ordered quickly, and even though the very nice lady told me my order could take up to 10 to 15 minutes, it was ready in only about five. The place does not have indoor dining, but it does have picnic tables on the outside, but they were all in use. So I took my food back to the Y where I was staying. It was a very large amount of food, once again, I tore into it before I could get a photo, but it was delicious. I loved the laulau, it was large, and the meat was so tender. The Kalua pig was also very tender, and it came with a sweet-and-sour sauce, which I put some on the pig, and some on the rice. Just an absolutely fantastic meal. The price was very reasonable. The menu has changed slightly with the addt "upscale" offerings. They still have that hand written board with all the typical local plate lunch offerings. The food won't BLOW you away, however good homey local food for a decent price. Prices have risen since my hey day, but in line with most late lunch spots. Today's order: pork adobo. Need to be sure to look at ALL the papers on the window as they may have added or removed an item. Very reasonable prices. Cheeseburger combo is $10. Burger, fries and a drink. The burger is not a thin piece of cardboard and the bag of thick fries is enormous. The order and expediting counters are kept clean by the cashiers. My bf and I went there around 8:15pm. There were no lines. We ordered 2 cheese burgers, onion rings, 1 chicken cuttlet and gravy, and a garlic salmon and asparagus. There was furikake on the rice, the asparagus was good, and the salad dressing tasted good. Only problem I had was the salmon was way too small for the price you're paying. I would have loved a bigger piece. Overall, I don't think we will be back. Maybe if we were in the area and its too late to get food from anywhere else.
