There's sure is something brewing here in Kalihi! What a great place to unwind you day than at Broken Boundary located right along the river behind Kapalama Shopping Center deep in the industrial area as the only signage is a "Brewery" flag flying curbside which is all you need to know that you're there. Though I was confused once I got there as I see some logo of Broken Boundary glasses but Kalihi Beer Merchandise it seems like they rebranded and if it still gives us wonderful sips it's cheers to a brewtiful craft. This spacious warehouse layout is nice you can see the dominate brewing barrels take up majority of the space on one side while on the flip side is an area where they do some cooking demonstration and more interesting events are brewing up. Which doesn't leave much seating as you imagined with a couple of tvs though we came at slow time I assumed as there was just a handful of others there I imagined it was more friends or regulars hanging out. Though a small but a decent lunch vibe menu we came here just for that with a nice selection of sandwiches, some small street tacos, quesadilla and even a salad and after a few errands we just was hungry and getting around Kalihi is a challenge with so many detours staying close was our option and decided to give them a peek. It was the Turkey Pesto Sandwich loaded with all they usually yummy fixings (turkey, provolone, arugula, tomato, pesto) on sliced sourdough bread toasted on a panini press which comes with kettle chips or arugula salad for +$2 and what a great sandwich would definitely have it again! Taco was definitely a craving I had to try...$4 each felt quite pricy but it was stuffed to the point as much as the tortilla will hold there are three choice (Chicken, Carne Asada and Poblano Peppers) which I got all three of course and to no surprise the Poblano Peppers was my favorite! My husband was interested in checking out this brewery so we stopped by this afternoon. Kalihi Beer is in an industrial area, so lots of street parking and a few spots in front of the warehouse if you get lucky. It wasn't crowded at all when we went mid-afternoon but I imagine this place does get a lot of traffic for pau hana as it seems low-key and easygoing. They do have a bar menu that sounded pretty good and I saw a sparkling Gatorade drink that is nonalcoholic, which sounded interesting. Since we were there for only a bit, hubs sampled their hazy IPA and picked up a 4 pack to enjoy at home. He said the beer was pretty good so maybe he'll try some of their other brews next time. read more

I can see why Broken Boundary wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. It's located in an open, spacious warehouse setting with little (or no?) air conditioning, a few tables, a few stools, and a couple tv's. It very much emits the "hanging with best buds in the garage" kind of vibes, but in the best kind of way. If Broken Boundary is anything, it's honest. They make interesting styles of beer which I found incredibly satiating. If you're looking for aesthetic and ambiance, this place is not for you. If you're looking for a quick bite and cold beer, Broken Boundary more than satiates. I was a big fan of the pulled pork sliders. Anything on a Hawaiian sweet roll tickles my fancy. I'm not sure I'd have ended up here if it weren't for the nearby Bishop Museum. We walked from the museum, but we could have easily found street parking at the brewery. The brewery also shares space with a homebrew supplier, including kombucha products, if you're into that sort of thing. I did street parking, but it sounds like they have a few reserved spots at the building (just don't leave any valuables in the car). This is the most no-nonsense brewery I found on Oahu! What do I mean by that? I mean it's in a wharehouse district, like all legit breweries often are. I mean it seems like the brewery most likely to be visiting by locals and least likely to be visited by tourists. (bonus, it is attached to a homebrew shop!) I got a sampler and the beer was solid! On my unofficial ranking scale of the culture of their beer with a 1 being most traditional and a 10 being most wacky and cutting-edge, I would give them a 6. When I went the kitchen was closed and it was just me in there on a Saturday. See what I mean? I'm not exaggerating when I say their ain't even a whiff of tourist trap odor in here! The guy working here was a delight. We talked about beer and the great outdoors and the conversation had the tone more of two friends than of a server and a customer. Broken Boundary Brewery is a great local brewery located in Kalihi and so worth the trip. Not as busy as Beerworks or Aloha Beer Co but has just as good beer.. This is a simple place with a nice chill vibe. The backdrop is the tanks full of beer and brewing equipment. They have seats at the bar and a number of tables for groups. This local business needs our support to help keep them in business. The place is a hidden gem with some really good beers. I enjoyed the Saison, Kolsch, Monkeypod Stout as well as the IPA. You can take beer to go as well, just check the fridge for what you like or bring a growler. I really enjoy the food. I have had the Smash Burger and Fries, Carnitas Taco and the Carne Asada Taco, all excellent and reasonable prices. I usually just walk but they have a parking lot and looks like lots of street parking. Service is excellent and the folks are passionate and enjoy what they do. What a great brewery! I decided to try their flight and try 4 of their best flavors. Lilikoi cider was a 10/10, mango beer was a 10/10, the ginger beer was 7/10 (but that's my personal taste) it just reminded me of kombucha, and the Kolsch was good 9.5/10. Service: 10/10 KC was super attentive of all his customers, personable and interacted with everyone. He always made sure to check in and gave a few recommendations. Excellent brewery nestled in the mean streets of Kalihi. This place is tucked in to a space in the industrial area near the canal. Good spot for pau hana with lots of street parking. I stopped by on a Friday afternoon after work for a few beers and some grinds. The brewed beer is really good here. My favorite was the monkeypod stout which is a dark beer with lots of flavor and character. They have a 4oz glass option which is very good if you want to try various different brews in a visit. The food menu is limited, but very good. We had the quesadilla and lots of tacos. My favorite were the carne asada and the carnitas. The former comes with guacamole and the latter comes with cilantro. If both had both of those, it would elevate the taste quite a bit. They also had fries on the menu, but I didn't try those. Through a non descript door on the side of a warehouse, polished concrete floors, reclaimed wooden tables, counters and bar top, amidst the shining stainless steel tanks, sits an amazing dispensary (not weed) of locally brewed, unfiltered craft beer so good they will make you weep. Examples? An unconventional saison with its atypical high 6.4% ABV. Unfiltered, creating an almost creamy mouth feel with the hint of tongue tingling effervescence. Tart and gently bitter in all the right ways. The higher alcohol is in perfect balance A Belgian Blonde (Jean Claude Van Blonde) with the herbal, wet forest floor nose of an Old World Trappist brew and bold upfront flavor that finishes clean like a pilsner. This time, a somewhat lower alcohol content (7.2% ABV) restrains the bitterness and flabbiness and keeps the entire flavor in check. The kolsch (On Common Ground) and the Hawaiian style IPA (Let's Go!) flavored with strawberry guava pulp both equally pleasing on a warm day. Other in house brewed IPA's and stouts available that have not yet been sampled. That will change soon. Drink in or takeaway. Crowlers and growlers filled while you wait, available. Let's start by saying that I have been excited as heck to come try Broken Boundary for months and months! I've heard great things about it, have read great reviews and have been eyeing the photos of the delicious-looking food every time I visit their page. After two failed attempts at coming, we finally made it today for lunch and tasting flights. Unfortunately, our experience did not live up to the hype. Service was subpar. It seemed that our server was new, but it definitely made our experience less enjoyable. I ordered a flight that never came to the table. After about 20ish minutes, the server checked in and I had to completely re-order the flight. The second time around, it was brought out quickly, but I was charged for both and had to do lots of explaining before it was situated. Beers were all decent. My favorite was the bread pudding. They only have 7 beers available, which seemed sparse. The server said the thinks that there are usually more options. Food-wise, the only noteworthy bite was the smash burger. The bacon jam was delicious. Presentation was NOT as catching as many of the pictures shown on yelp. It was served next to a sad pile of soggy, lukewarm fries. We also got the carne asada quesadilla and the poblano street tacos. Both of these choices were mediocre. The quesadilla could have been awesome, but the steak was tough. I actually did enjoy the tacos, but the friends that I shared them with did not like them for some reason. I'm sad to leave a less than epic review for this place. I really appreciate the option of ordering 4 oz glasses because we were able to try a bunch of different beers all in one visit. So this time we tried 4, along with one of the soft drinks. I typically prefer lighter, fruity beers, so I tried an IPA called Dancing with Miranda and it fit the bill perfectly. Even my fiance liked it, despite the fact that he normally doesn't care for IPAs. The Man-Li was also very good. Another light drink that didn't overpower any other drinks of the food. We came here straight from the airport. The servers are fantastic and the beers are delish. We tried the Miranda, the Kolsch, and the Stout... all excellent. As for food, mycarnitas taco was of the hook: very flavorful and a good amount of spiciness. The carne asada taco same the poblano tacos were fine, but IMHO they paled in comparison to the carnitas... In retrospect I wish I had ordered three carnitas. As for downsides, the atmosphere is fairly blah. Also,, although we happened to find an open spot on the street, the parking is less than ideal during the day with pretty much all the street parking filled (we were there around 1pm on a Friday)... At night I imagine there would be more street parking available. The pros definitely outweigh the cons by far, and if definitely recommend this place. the string fries were quite tasty. read more

It was kind of confusing. Live music was great but very loud. Menu was disappointing. Food mediocre. All in all, not a bad night but we won't be coming back. It was just a confusing loud place. It appears to be an industrial area which means it had plenty of street parking and wide streets. At the same time, it was a side street industrial area which means it was also very quite. Interior: Now the interior was really dope! They have their seating and bar in the middle of their tanks which offers an amazing aesthetic. The have nice tables to be seated however they did have plastic folding chairs. They were comfortable at first but eventually your back will start to ache. There's no loud music which makes at a great place to chat with your loved one or friends. Service: I didn't catch the name of our young waiter, but he was really welcoming and nice. He offered us plenty of tasters to try out our drinks. He definitely was a refreshing splash of sincere service. The other staff was also very kind and considerate. Broken Boundary Brewery is Oahu's newest, but the history and location go back a long time. The brewery is located in the only homebrewing store on the island, Homebrew in Paradise. This business has gone through many owners and changed locations, but when it was acquired by two partners, Bill Sumrow and Chris Cook, they already had plans to add a brewery. Over the last few years they've completely transformed the building from an old warehouse into an organized and comfortable place to visit. It's still two businesses in one, Homebrew in Paradise offers all the supplies and ingredients you could need to jump into the hobby. They used reclaimated pallet wood to separate the businesses. From the main entrance, restrooms are directly to the back, with seating along both sides. At the back right you'll find the bar area, which as of this writing offers growler and crowler fills, as well as merchandise. The brewery area is to the right; windows let you see the equipment. In the old garage area is a large refrigerator and space for future tables and games. The plan is to add outdoor seating along the street. They have dedicated parking spots in the lot to the left as well as free street parking in the neighborhood. On to the beer. The brewers are all about traditional and classic styles, maybe with a hint of their own signature and local ingredients. You should expect good quality beer made well. At the soft opening during the stay-at-home orders, they have five to choose from: a red ale with ginger, pale ale, West Coast IPA, Belgian strong blond, and a porter. All are delicious; you can ask for samples. More styles will be added all the time. When the brewery opens fully, you'll be able to get full pours to enjoy on the property. Crowler fills are $13 each for any style, growlers are placed by the size of the container; for the quality, these are excellent prices. For any beer fan, this is a must stop and worth the trip. It's Kalihi's only brewery making it a great waiting area for bad Ewa traffic after work. read more

I've been coming to this spot a lot now and I think it's time for a little Review Update. Since my friends and I discovered this brewery, we been frequently visiting that we became regulars and got to know most of the workers here. They have changed a lot and had a lot of different events. First off, they do have Trivia Nights on Tuesdays. We've been to first one and it was super fun. They have happy hour during that time, and you get to learn some new and interesting facts. They also had a few Thursday Night Paint Nite events. It's a limited ticketed event where you have a few drinks and learn how to paint. Besides their amazing beers that they brew, they had a big update to their kitchen. The tacos and smash burgers are not available daily now, but they do have new sandwiches and salads to make up for them. The sandwiches are super good. I've already tried three out of the four they offered. The Turkey Pesto is my favorite. They are served with a side of chips or arugula salad. Don't worry their famous Tacos and Burgers usually come out the first and third Saturdays of the month. So you still get to see them occasionally. I've loved that this place has grew and I been to some places that are selling their beers. Also i'm loving all these events they come up with. Super fun and chill place to have a pau hana. read more

Back to basics, back to the classics. Rediscovering what beer was originally, and innovating from a solid starting point, that's what Broken Boundary Brewery is doing, and they've started wonderfully. The brewery is attached to the Homebrew in Paradise homebrew store, and it's been very exciting to watch its construction over the last several months when visiting the store for brew supplies. I cannot imagine opening any business during the ongoing pandemic crisis, but these guys managed to do it and are pouring growlers of fresh beer for all. I recently visited and had an opportunity to try each of their five beers on tap, all of which scream of a meticulous effort to brew according to style guidelines. First, for social distancing, they should be commended for their thorough processes. As you enter, you hand the bartender your growler, who sanitizes it while you thoroughly wash your hands. You're offered to taste the beers and make your selection. Your growler is then filled, sanitized again on the outside and placed on the counter to pickup. To pay, your card is taken, swiped, then sanitized and handed back to you with the sanitized towel. The card machine is also sanitized after each guest. A redundant and thorough process ensuring safety. Of everything I tried, I enjoyed the pale ale the best. I usually avoid pale ale, as so often there is little distinction between a pale ale and a west coast-style IPA, which I'm not particularly fond of. Not so at Broken Boundary, in this pale ale, brewers Bill and Chris have brought the style back to what it should be, best described in my opinion as a drier and slightly hop-forward version of a blonde ale. In this, Broken Boundary has produced the perfect pale ale. I downed my 64oz growler of it in no time! The Porter appropriately mocks the trend for adjunct-laden sugar bombs, making a roasty malt and earthy hop porter that is authentic to its English roots, but different compared to what's out there. The Belgian blonde I found to be a bit cloying, but still enjoyable. The west coast IPA, exactly that a pale, dry beer of piney-grapefruit characteristic emblematic of the style. Finally, the ginger red ale corrects other commercial examples, bringing down the typical excess roast malt character into balance with just a hint of ginger in the background. In a brewing world where the trend is ever seeking to push the boundaries of what beer is, Broken Boundary's start is a refreshing reset, a springboard for success. Beginning with basics, the brewery also pledges opportunities to test the conventions they're building as they grow, offering all a unique opportunity to grow and learn with them as Oahu's newest brewery. I'm in shock! The pictures aren't anything like the food they serve. The tacos and smash burger were so small I still can't believe it! Or tasty either. Everything is severely overpriced and a ripoff. We were so disappointed we didn't stay to try the beer. Service was good. Rant over! read more

Excellent food and beer! Parking relatively easy on street. Enjoyed live music when we're there.

Good smash burger Saturday! For 12.99 on saturdays you can get a double cheeseburger with bacon jam, pickles, and cheddar cheese with chips on the side. It was good for bar food although I do wish it came with fries. The chips were fresh and crunchy though! They were very nice and accommodated for my dog even though the restaurant doesn't have outdoor seating. There is a shared parking lot with some nearby car shops. They only have indoor seating. The vibe is laid back and you can bring friends, kids, or just a date. The waiter was really nice too! Definitely a solid place to hang out. read more
