Hana Koa Brewing is definitely worth the drive or bike ride because it's not in Waikiki, but the trip is absolutely worth it if you're looking for something a little different from the traditional beers you can get anywhere. The space has a more upscale feel, with a really nice vibe inside and plenty of tables. They have a great selection beyond their own beer, including cocktails, wine, non-alcoholic drinks, and guest taps. I especially loved that they offered smaller beer pours, which let me try several different beers without committing to a full pour of each. I was there for the beer, and I definitely wasn't disappointed! I was also really impressed by the food menu. They had lunch specials that sounded fantastic, and they even offer a brunch menu with special brunch cocktails. I wasn't hungry enough to try the food this time, but it definitely gives me a reason to come back. Great beer, a beautiful space, and lots of options for everyone. Hana Koa has been my favorite brewery for years. I have countless pieces of merch, always come through for new beer releases, and the food is phenomenal. Unfortunately, something has changed recently and you can see it throughout recent reviews here, which tells me this is a taught practice by management and not just one shady server. Mainly, being up charged or sold "extras" without disclosing they're actually add ons. Our table of 4 had 3 different sandwiches, 2 burgers and a chicken sandwich. While ordering the server offered each of us, "would you like fries, onion rings, or salad with that?" There was no disclosure of it being additional, and she never used the words add ons or extras. When the bill was received, all 3 that received the sandwiches and "sides" were shocked to see upcharges (example $5.00 extra for 1/4 cup of greens and 2 slices of cucumber) when we were being offered these with our orders. When I asked the server about the charge, I asked why it wasn't disclosed it was extra, and that we only answered her question of which side we wanted because she offered as if it was included, her responses were baffling. The first was "There's nowhere on island that serves fries with a sandwich", to which I said, "but you didn't say it was extra, you offered them as if they were included", she said "it's written on the menu". To note: fries, onion rings, and side salads are listed on the menu, in their own section, separate from the sandwich sections. So while it is written, they know exactly what they're doing when they offer you sides or sauces, and you can see other recent reviews here making the same complaint. This left an extra bad taste for our table as we had come in to help support them after the recent tropical storm left them without power. We were excited to participate in a local event they were hosting and help support them after losing stock and days being closed from the storm, just to have this shady process of being upsold things we didn't order (on a $350+ bill that also included shirts from their merch store). Popped in because I was in the area and didn't know it was a sit-down restaurant, lol. Got a table but not realizing the time, I had to order take out. I was really embarrassed even after my server sat me down, but she was extremely accommodating and understanding. Her app recommendations were spot on! The marlin toast and bang bang shrimp were delicious! I chose the garden burger based on my chef's recommendation, and it was a different experience for me. I was not very big on the texture, but the flavors were amazing. After finishing the burger, it made me want more. The onion rings were also on point! Was enjoying that while driving to my appointment. I thought I was pressed for time, but my take out order came to me super quickly, and that's what impressed me the most! We came to Hana Koa Brewing Co. for happy hour and some food & there were some good parts of the visit, but also a few things that kept the experience from being much better. The biggest downside was the service from our server Andrea. She was not rude, but she did seem annoyed by almost every request we made. After my party ordered drinks, she took our menus before we had ordered food, luckily I arrived late so my menu was left behind. We had to share one between 4 of us. I also asked for a set of silverware and she brought me just a napkin. Then another 25 minutes went by before she even returned once to check on us or ask if we wanted to order food, we had to go out of our way to flag her down. The drinks were also not a standout. The old fashioneds tasted weak, especially compared to what I would expect from a place with a full bar and cocktail menu. I was also disappointed that they were already out of the prime rib sandwich at 5:45, which felt early considering they were open for 5+ more hours. Another small but frustrating thing was being charged 50 cents for fry sauce for our fries and onion rings without being told there was an extra charge when the sauce options were offered. I don't mind being charged for it but why weren't we told nor was it listed on the menu. That said, there were definitely positives. The brisket sandwich was good, and the fries and onion rings were crispy and enjoyable. Our second server, a younger female server, was very polite and courteous, which helped improve the overall experience. We also appreciated that we were not rushed to leave and were able to enjoy our time there. The happy hour pricing was a bit pricey in my opinion for the amount we ordered. We had an order of fries, two orders of onion rings, two chicken sandwiches (no fries), a brisket sandwich with fries, a vegan burger (no fries), two beer flights, two additional beers, and three cocktails for around $170 before tip. Overall, Hana Koa had good food, ok happy hour prices, and a nice casual brewery setting, but the inconsistent service, weak drinks, missing menu item, and surprise sauce charge made this visit fall short of an ideal experience. read more

Had a vendor networking event here ... up in the Moon room (2nd floor). Great venue area that has a full bar, and easy to have business conversations without shouting ... we could order any drink on the menu! Sweet! I had the Lilikoi Mule and it was so refreshing. We had a buffet of prepared food items, which were all tasty. I was told that the pickled onion rings were super popular here! This place has been on my list to try for a while. A coworker finally got me to get out. I was able to get a parking spot in their lot and appreciated the lady there that was making sure people parking were customers. The place looked cool inside and got busier into the early evening. Came here on a Sunday with some friends and food was good for a brewery. We made reservations online but we probably could have just walked in for a party of 4. They have ample seating both up and downstairs. When we were leaving, around 2p the place filled up. They had a big menu with some special Sunday brunch options too. A hidden gem worth trying. The service is great from the moment we came in. The hostess is welcoming and our server was friendly and attentive. This restaurant/bar is spacious with lots of seating. Their menu is easy to choose from and lots of variety of beers to try. I'm not a beer person so I choose a Lilikoi Mulē which was very good. My husband is a IPA drinker and he loved the ones he tried. The food we got was delicious and omg, their onion rings are soo good!! In my opinion, their onion rings are the best I have tried, lol. Had a great time at Hana Koa, Saturday night they have a prime rib special but we didnt order it. The marlin toast was delicious it comes with 3 pieces but you can add an extra piece. Stopped in on a busy Tuesday night. The lot was full and all street parking was taken. Hostess told us to find street parking or we can park in the parking garage behind the building called "Altres" which was free of charge and allowed after 5pm. I think making a reservation would be recommended, but we lucked out with walking-in and snagging a high top table. Ordered a flight and my all-time favorite HanaKoa Beer, which is the Rice Lager. The building has No acoustics what so ever, thus really noisy and loud. Not the best environment to bring guests and expect to have any sort of conversation with. Hana Koa is hands down the best brewery on Oahu. I know some people will fight me on this, but I stand by what I said. If you're looking for a spot that puts out creative, flavorful beers, this is the place. Their beer selection is unmatched, and what makes them stand out is the way they blend local flavors with fun, inventive ideas. Surf Pup is punchy, One Moa is hands down one of the best cream ales out there, and Love Letter is a bold double IPA. I've been coming here for years, and while not every beer has been my personal favorite, I've never felt let down. they're always well-crafted and intentional. And the food? Also solid. There are only a couple of menu items I wouldn't order again, but overall this is a place you can enjoy with family or friends (even if beer isn't your thing). The sliders are a go-to, the mac & cheese is decent, and I love that they run daily specials to keep things fresh. Favorites of mine include the Pork Belly Sliders, Bang-a-Rang Shrimp, Nakamura's Marlin Toast, and the Fried Chicken Sando. The Captain Salad is another standout, huge portions and packed with flavor. If you're staying in Waikiki, you'll want to carve out time to make it here. It's just about 15 minutes away by Uber or bus, and honestly, if you're up for it, you could even walk. It's not that far. That's what makes this place so special. What a big difference between my first visit when Hana Koa Brewing was relatively new with generic food, and was told their IPAs were adjusted to make it "easier" to drink till now with excellent food and very unique and awesome beers! Still located in Kaka'ako along Kawaiahao St., near Ward Ave. There's a decent amount of parking beside the building plus additional stalls in the back and in the ALTRES building (after 5pm). Inside was open, bright, spacious, and comfortable. More of a restaurant feel than before. There's a really solid variety of beer and love the fact that they have a partnership with The Rice Factory and incorporated their ride in the beer. I tried The Rice Breaker - taste was clean, light, and smooth. The Midnight Pretender was excellent - clean, smooth with a nice coffee after taste. Pina Hoplada is really good! Tastes almost like the Colada! All the right flavors come out. Very well balanced. The Roasted Eggplant Bruschetta was OK. The crostini bread was not buttery and toasted way too long making it too crunchy, which made it instantly fall apart after the first bite. Eggplant spread had no "roasted" taste at all. Tomato and basil are mixed together, so it wasn't spread evenly. Very basic. Not sure about $4 per toast for this ($12 for 3, plus $3.50 per extra piece). Vietnamese Salad was all right. The vermicelli noodles were on the hard side and easily falls apart making it not too appetizing. I never felt it had any Vietnamese flavors. The nuac cham dressing was almost like Italian dressing. Was there fish sauce? It definitely needed more mint and cilantro, and less cabbage (it even had red cabbage too). Lemongrass Chicken was okay. Chicken was overcooked and on the dry side with not much lemongrass flavor. Looked and ate more like chicken breast than chicken thigh. Rice was good on this one (the shrimp dish was a different story). The accompanying Vietnamese side salad was better than the first one. Same dressing came with but still didn't get any Vietnamese flavors. At least it helped with the dry chicken! The Fried Saimin was good. Small portion, basic. Noodles were stir fried well and had solid flavor. Egg on top had a nice yolk. But seemed had a hard time peeling the shell. A lot of missing egg white! The Garlic Shrimp was good. Cooked well. Nice sized shrimp. Excellent garlic flavor. Rice was exceedingly mushy. Hope this was from The Rice Factory because it would be a waste. The Shanghai bok choy was old and lifeless. The Hana Koa Burger was pretty good. Nicely seasoned beef patty. Nice char. Tender and juicy. Nicely toasted brioche bun. I'd get this again! Lastly, the Father's Day special Prime Rib was very good! Wish this can stay on the menu! The prime rib was decent size and cooked beautifully. The meat was tender and seasoned just enough for the salty and charred taste. The accompanying mashed potatoes were very good as well as the au jus and horseradish (I don't mind if it costs extra--a dollar in this case. Just LET US KNOW beforehand!). In a prior visit, I had the Popcorn Shrimp. Taste and shrimp were pretty good. Just the portion was surprisingly small, and it wasn't really "popcorn" shrimp as they were butterflied and deep fried. The Fish and chips were good. Nicely fried flaky fish with taste tartar sauce. Fries were good. Overall, I had a good experience. Our server was excellent and just a pleasure. Friendly, patient, and informative. The beers were awesome. Love the variety and collaborations, especially incorporating rice from The Rice Factory into their beers. Had to review them because I just had the most lovely Mother's Day Brunch and I just realized how consistent this place has been over the number I've years I've come by. I got the arugula and beet salad, and asked to add some chicken. The chicken was, in a word, disgusting. It tasted like middle school cafeteria chicken, microwaved to disgusting "perfection" and tasting just like you remember from those days (bad). Rubbery, cartilage-laden, and as flavorful as a shoe sole. Plus the beets were probably canned, and didn't add anything to the dish. The beers were solid, at least. I think this place has gone downhill and I'm so sad. Back in the day they had better food, service and I'll even say beer. But today's state: It's gotten popular so unless you go on an off time or plan ahead and reserve you may or may not get a seat. Service used to be way more attentive but last few times the servers are really just coasting. They know the bill will be high (this place ain't cheap) so they don't have to do much to earn their tips. One server even freaked out at us because my friend brought a tin of special cookies her friend shipped from Germany to share with our table of 4 during the holidays. We got scolded for eating a cookie like bad little school kids. Their burger is the only good thing on the menu. Every single time I order anything but that my belly is disappointed. I tried their lemongrass chicken plate and the chicken was DRY and burnt. No shame in chefs game. The side salad was the best thing on the plate. Rice was mushy and my server had to be asked 2x to bring some shoyu. The ambience is industrial open space with cold AC and crying babies. They don't play music. We have been back to Hana Koa Brewing a few times when we come over from the Big Island. Each time is equally as good or better than the last. This trip, after finishing a very mediocre albeit way overpriced meal at a place in Waikiki that rhymes with Quiora, we have decided to return for our last night to a tried and true local Brewery. Love this place! There is a parking lot adjacent to the buildings if it is full, there is street parking. This place is huge and has a plethora of different beer. There is an upstairs which you can have private parties. Awesome staff! Check it out! read more

Came here while on vacay and had a great time! While parking seems to be a bit limited, the brewery itself is pretty spacious, so we got seated right away. The brewery is warehouse styled, like many breweries, but the decor is more on the artsy side. I dug it a lot! On to the beer and food! I'm an IPA guy so I went with the Space Raccoon hazy IPA. Super tasty! As far as food goes, I got the Wednesday Wing special in the Hawaiian Seoul flavor. Very delicious wings! I had a side of onion rings which were good as well. Service was great and attentive! There's a lot of cool merch, and I got myself a nice trucker hat to bring back home to the mainland. I look forward to coming back, hopefully I make my way back to Oahu sooner than later! read more
