I've never liked rum that much before: it's a bit too syrupy sweet for my taste, and the finer points of it have escaped me. That is, until I came to Ko Hana. This was my second visit, and I was just as pleased as I'd been on my first visit. The rum is made with sugarcane, not molasses, and its caramel notes remind me more of bourbon. The tasting itself is interesting, with facts from the host, and I especially enjoyed the rum made from burned sugarcane, which is also a testament to Ko Hana's endless creativity. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming but also calming, giving you plenty of time to think about how many bottles you want to buy. Because you will want to buy some. read more

I am a big fan of Rum but have never had Agricole before. So I knew I wanted to do a tour at this distillery. We saw online that they had 3 tiers of tours, (a basic one at $35, a mid tier one at $75 and the "Deep Dive" tour at $150). Of course the one that sounded the best was the deep dive. $150 was hella expensive but it gave you the most behind the scenes version which gave information about how the Rum is made and that is what I wanted to experience. However we didn't realize that the deep dive tour is only offered during the week and we were there on a Saturday. I asked about doing the deep dive tour and the guy that we were talking to said they couldn't do it. He went and asked a woman who told him to, "Ask Bea". Well instead of asking Bea he just told us we couldn't do it. This really bothered me. The other person told you to ask Bea, but you couldn't be bothered. If the answer was "no" that's fine but at least ask the question. So we just paid for the basic tour. I noticed that there was a woman off to the side at a desk. I thought this might be Bea. So I went over to her and indeed she was Bea. I asked if it would be possible for us to do the deep dive tour and she said that the person that could do it for us was on break and we'd have to wait until he got back to see if he would do it. No problem. So we waited a few minutes and Dustin greeted us and we were off on the deep dive tour. Dustin was very knowledgeable and we had a great time with him learning about Ko Hana and the Rum making process. It was really a lot of fun but I have to say that $150 is a crazy amount of money but I'm glad we did it. Ko Hana Distillery is definitely worth a stop if you're on your way to the Dole Plantation. Parking is abundant and easy, and the visit can actually get you out of the traffic for a while and give you a beautiful reason to slow down and enjoy the area. The tastings are 100% recommended. I'm not a rum drinker at all, but the tasting really helped me understand how much good, well-made rum is underrated. You get to appreciate the craftsmanship and flavors in a way you probably wouldn't from just having rum at a bar. Another great perk is that they offer shipping, so if you find something you love but don't have much room in your luggage, you can have it shipped home. We had such a fun time on this distillery tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and fun, and we started off with a shot of the pure sugar cane juice, which was absolutely unreal. The space is so luscious and beautiful, and they had a tortoise! All the rums were incredible and delicious, and the store was fun- we bought quite a few souvenirs. After the tour we got a BBQ plate from the on site restaurant, and genuinely it was some of the best food we had in our entire trip!! Tour was really fun and interesting! I had no idea that most rum is made from molasses but theirs is made more directly from the pressed sugar cane juice. We brought our middle school aged kids and loved that they got a little science learning as the rum production was explained. Staff was all top notch, friendly and knowledgable. Tasting was really generous and my husband and I ordered different ones which allowed us to also try each other's tastings too. I got the cocktail one and he got the classic rum one. We bought some gifts for family member taking care of our dog and a special bottle for my upcoming birthday. Finally, our son LOVED the honey so bought a bottle of that as well. This place is totally off the beaten path. Up kunia road inbetween kunia and wahiawa So pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Interesting the actual showroom is in a quonset hut (old military barracks corregated metal building) and its even a historical protected building. The insides of the building is beautifully renovated (pic). They sell whiskey..coffee... honey.. shirts mugs and some other retail stuff. The staff was super cool and friendly and even gave whisky and honey samples. They make their own whiskey (I dont drink anymore) but my co-worker said it was good. They also sell a tour and they have a restaurant in back but only experienced the retail side. Our friends invited here to hangout over lunch. We grabbed lunch, sat outside, and participated in the "Aged Rum Tasting". Food The food was delicious. We grabbed their 4-item mixed plate and shared as a family. All the food tasted delicious and there was enough food to share for two adults, a child, and a toddler. I rescheduled my business, inter-island flight to accommodate. Service The service was great! All the staff were friendly and warm. From the food staff to the tasting staff. Sitting Area There were enough picnic tables in the sitting area to go around for us. It was a little warm. I remember getting slightly uncomfortable. Please bring your own high-chair because they do not have any here. They had a nice grass area for the kids to play, however, there was no barrier to prevent the kids from running into the parking lot or street which didn't allow us to relax. I wish it was a controlled area. Tasting My friend invited me over to do their tasting and it was great. The rum was delicious and well-spaced. This experience surprised me. I'm not a big fan of rum. Never, in a million years, would I ever think I would drink rum without being mixed with something. It was so good that we bought some and flew home with it! Unfortunately, I found out I have expensive taste and purchased the most expensive bottle they have. I was looking for a fun date idea and came across Ko Hana's Distillery Tour. I was able to make reservations online and the workers kindly gave us a Kama'aina discount when we arrived. The tour was relatively intimate with a group of about a dozen people plus a knowledgeable guide. At the start of the tour we were given a tasting of freshly squeezed sugar cane juice as we learned about the background and history of the distillery and industry in Hawaii. As we explored the garden and barrel house, our guide told us more about the rum making process. At the end of the visit we were able to taste the rum we learned so much about. We chose the classic flight. You can also chose to get a cocktail flight or upgrade to an aged rum flight. Overall, this was a very fun experience. I came in knowing literally nothing about rum but came out feeling like a rum expert. (Or at least not a rum novice.) They have lots of parking at the front, restrooms, and even a yummy barbecue restaurant attached called "This Lil Piggy". If you don't have time to do the whole tour, they also have individually packaged chilled drinks in their gift shop that you can purchase and enjoy in their patio. read more

Wonderful tour and place to visit! My wife and I went here last Friday and were greeted by JB. Very nice person and very knowledgeable. She took us on a tour of the sugar cane fields, barrel aging, distilling process and finally tasting. What a wonderful time in such a nice clean comfortable atmosphere. We samples the Legacy brands and the fruity drinks. The legacy brands were very smooth and tasty. The mixed drinks like the Mai Tai, Daiquiri and Blue Hawaii were our favorites, actually all of the flavors were our favorite. My +1 and I signed up for a rum tasting tour, and we had a great time. Ko Hana distillery is not hard to find, though it is just off the beaten path. I wanted to try a rum tasting tour while I was in the area, found it on Google, and even came across a Groupon deal on two rum tasting tours. We opted for the shorter tour because of the deal, but we didn't feel like we missed out on much. Our tour guide took us outside and showed us different types of sugarcane that they use in a little garden. If we would have chosen the longer tour, they would've actually taken us out to the sugarcane fields, but really we just wanted to learn about their process there and taste some different rums. So we got to see where they keep the barrels and where they distill the spirits before returning inside for the tastings. My plus one tried the classic tastings, and I opted for the slightly pricier barrel, aged tastings. You can't go wrong either way, but if you have the pallet for sipping on different flavors of rum, then I would go with the barrel aged. Either way, they gave us generous pores of each and told us what distinguished each one from the others. I particularly appreciated the Koa, which had a rich red hue from the Koa wood it was aged in, though I ended up taking a small bottle of the more inexpensive Koho home. We went on an informative tour that teaches you not only about their rum but also about the history of the land it's now on. From it going through Del Monte to them, it is history that is fun to learn about. Some of the homes that the plantation workers lived in are still up and are being used as domiciles to this day. As for their rum, it's authentic sugar cane rum, free from the impurities and shortcuts found in mass-produced ones. They will show you the different types of sugar cane and walk you through their rickhouse. As a bourbon fan, it was surprising to learn that they source barrels from Kentucky to age some of their rum. The staff was friendly, and their gift shop and tasting room have a welcoming and relaxing feel to them. If you're into your craft distilleries, then stopping here is a no-brainer. read more

Some are super strong, others I would confuse with bourbon and one would be amazing in a "Irish coffee" (would that be Hawaiian coffee) You also get to taste some chocolate ! I am not sure how I haven't been here before . I got invited by a member of the distillery and I am grateful for the experience. The history of the farm and sugar production was so interesting. We had such a great guide/host! Kaimana was so much fun and down to earth. Made our experience what it was!!! The store was full of really cool gift ideas and of course I left with a good collection of things! Also, the rum cake and a collection of chocolate bars! The tastings can be for anyone, you can taste the cocktails or the aged Rum. I went with the aged rum, but watched another tasting and they also loved their picks! If you're a rum person, my partner got the regular flight - tastings of 5 different white and dark rums. She said each was delicious with different tasting profiles. If you're more of a cocktail person, I did the cocktail flight. This one had tastings of 6 different cocktails. All DELISH! The tastings also had small bites of their rum cake and chocolate. Always wanted to check this place out when the bottles were appearing in local stores lol. We got the Ready-to-drink flights because we weren't really rum people, especially me lol. The products they were selling were pretty cool. You can engrave your name on a KōHana rum bottle if you want. They also had painted rum bottles as decorations which was cute! Their turtle mascot is even cuter! He sits outside, basking in the sun in the corner of the yard. Next door They were experimenting on growing their own lettuce because the lettuce they ship to Hawaii don't last or it's already bad the next day. There is a little restaurant with lots of seats if you feel hungry or just want to visit there. I saw people just come for the restaurant and just go to buy the rum which you can totally do. They have a little sugar cane garden also outside next to where they store the rum barrels to show the many different sugar canes Hawaii has and what they use. When you enter the room with the rum barrels on the tour, you can immediately smell the rum which was awesome! They had a few Koa wood barrels that were special because Koa wood is rare. You get to do the tasting of your choice of "Rum Tastings" at the end of the tour. The water cup we drank out of was so cool because it was made for drinking on a ship! XD My favorite was the pineapple. Most of the drinks we had were clear, except the Blue Hawaiian lol. Because the Blue Hawaiian wasn't mixed with the usual components it was ok XD You also get to try their chocolate they collab-ed with Manoa Chocolate and their hot sauce they sell there. I couldn't really taste the rum barrel the chocolate was in, but it was good chocolate. The hot sauce was SUPER SUPER HOT! Be careful! And please eat something before the tour lol. Decided to go try this rum distillery. As we walked in it gave a cool rum vibe with lots of cool merchandise to purchase. We purchased the guided tour. Learned a lot about rum but the experience with the tour was kinda short. In my opinion I don't think the tour is all that but the tasting was very good. You had the option of tasting different types of rum or different cocktails they make with rum. Our tour guide was really knowledgeable. They also have an outdoor area with food you can buy if you want to hang out for a while. So if you are into or want to experience something like this. I recommend just doing the tasting. read more

I love going in for tastings and even a tour especially if I'm taking family or friends who are visit Oahu. I have to say this place has gotten better over time. They keep adding different tasting options and upgrading on their merchandise. The decor has also improved over the years. The service is great and they make it easy for customers to go in and mix and match their own boxes. They also have some fun/surprise boxes you can order or buy at the distiller. It's pretty cool to see distilleries work. It's north on Kunia road. Just keep driving north with big sign on it the left. You won't miss it. Tons of parking. They offer tours and tastings. Call ahead to make an appointment. Prices vary but pretty reasonable. The distillery had a pretty nice gift shop, tasting areas and local products to purchase. Everyone I talked to was super nice and friendly. Even though it can get busy, they really make everyone feel comfortable with the whole experience. Tasting was spot on as well. read more

My husband and I heard about Ko Hana Distillers while doing a chocolate and wine tasting at Mānoa Chocolate. We were able to try some of their chocolate rum and decided to swing by the distillery the next day. My husband actually found some tickets on Groupon. We were a few minutes late because of traffic, but they were super understanding about it. Our tour hadn't really started yet, so we didn't miss much. We met up with our group outside, where we learned about how they farm, distill, and age the barrels. Rohan was our guide and he was great! After that, we checked out the barrel storage area and finished up with a rum tasting. I tried the ready-to-drink cocktail tastings, and my husband went with the classic tasting. Rohan even let us sample a pumpkin spice cocktail made with one of the rums. First rum tasting and hopefully not my last! My friend group decided to go for the full tour + tasting and were not disappointed. The main area for the tasting is very casual with a bunch of fun souvenirs to buy, a bar for serving their rum & drinks, and an area to show how they make sugarcane juice. Garret was a real one and made the tour / rum tasting a memorable one. Very knowledgeable about the whole process and friendly with all of our questions (including the more silly ones). The classic rum flight was enjoyable with the chocolate infused one being my favorite (sort of a dessert rum) which was complemented well by some honey.
