Amazing Vietnamese food truck with an extensive menu! I came across this food truck the other night with a hankering for Pho. As I approached, I could see a huge photo collage of most of the dishes served. A very nice woman at the counter took my order, of which I went for the Oxtail Pho and a Pineapple Sugar Cane drink. After paying, I went to pick a table. Within 8 minutes the food arrived at the table and it smelled wonderful. First off, I've never had oxtail pho before... love oxtail, love pho, so perfect combo! The broth was delicious and the pho was fantastic! The only thing I'd say is that the portion was a bit small for Hawaiian and Vietnamese standards. As for the ambiance, it's very casual with a street food scene vibe that I was digging! There's ample parking as well. Next time I'd like to try the pork rice plate and the snails. What a cool spot! We were walking around looking for a late night bite and we stumbled on this place in a parking lot. They have booths for the various vendors and they allow you to bring your own drinks. People were eating and singing karaoke, the service was great, and best of all, the food hits real hard. They have one of the better fish sauces that isn't too fishy, so non-Viet people can enjoy it too. We initially were planning to go to Sura just around the corner, but was too impatient to wait. So we ended up walking to the food trucks to explore other options. The pho was overall ok, but I feel like I've had richer tasting broth elsewhere. I probably wouldn't get the pho again, but I am open to ordering another dish from the menu. I also find that the prices here are on the higher end. I felt like the portion of the food does not reflect the price. Sugarcane juice costs $8.99, which is pricier than what I would pay. SERVICE -- The workers are friendly. One of them wiped down the table for me when I sat down. AMBIANCE -- This place is located on an empty (parking?) lot across the Hawaii Convention Center. There are two other food trucks in the lot. Saigon Grill is the biggest one. It is painted in pastel pink tones and sakura flowers. There are bench-style seating right infront of the trucks. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Jimmy, who is a very kind and pleasant person to meet. I ordered a fresh cold coconut, and he had his chef pour the coconut juice into a cup, and even cut the coconut meat in too. Probably the best coconut I've ever tasted in my life. Also out here is plenty of outdoor seating with real nice marble tables and chairs. It's quite fancy even. Then when we were about to leave, I spoke with Jimmy a bit and explained we were leaving for the airport later today, so we couldn't cut some fruits we were carrying around. These are some of the worst people I've ever had the displeasure of ordering from. They did NOT know where to go even though I told them the address. They did NOT drop off the food to anyone, just repeatedly went back and did not honor the order. i had to wait over an HOUR for 2 orders of spring rolls which they delivered as egg-rolls after asking me to text the address of the hotel to a personal number. Cooked by actual Vietnamese people, the clams are so sweet and fresh even drank the lemon grass soup that it was in!! The crawfish was delicious literally smothered in garlic goodness, should've ask for a bit spicer. The drinks was just right not too sweet. The owner was sweet enough to talk to us and have a good convo about his food! Love it when people are just good people and like to converse ! Food is overpriced and poor quality. Seafood is not fresh as advertised. We spent $60 on a small dungeon crab, took one bite and threw the whole crab away. The "butter garlic" sauce was really sweet and crab barely had any meat. For a $30 Conch mango salad, all you get is lot of onion, very little mango, maybe 4 thin slices of conch, and very stale shrimp chips. Finally got to try this place! It's pretty good but I think the prices could be better for the quantity and quality of food. We tried their snails, curry crab and dynamite scallops. Their snails were quite tiny and couldn't taste much of the meat flavor. The sauce didn't really stick to the meat so it's a little bland. The curry crab was delicious! The curry sauce went so well with rice! But the crab was small and not very sweet. The dynamite scallops didn't look anything like the photo, also it didn't taste that good. I've been wanting to go to Saigon Grill for a while now, and I'm glad we finally got the chance to go. We got there about 7pm on Saturday and it wasn't very crowded. The parking lot is small, but is convenient because it's right next to their place. They have a really nice set up with a good amount of outdoor seating & their "wagon" is decorated so nicely. We looked at their menu & couldn't decide what to get because everything looked so good. We decided on the butter garlic snails & the vermicelli bowl. I think they made the wrong flavored snails because it was soooo spicy. But the taste was really good & worth the sweat. The vermicelli bowl came with pork, spring rolls & shrimp. Really good as well. I also got their mixed fruit cane juice which was good but I think the regular flavor would've been better. They are pretty pricey, so be prepared to spend quite a bit. Here's my $54.43 food experience at a random food truck along Kalakaua Street... Came here around 0100 and no I am not drunk and I know exactly how my food tasted... - FOOD - S4. Lemon Grass Escargot ($24.99) - price wise I think it's reasonable. The escargot are pretty huge too and though it is in the shell t'was easy to get the meat out and actually taste flavorful. There's a good kick on it and the lemon grass make it smells good too. I'd probably order this again! 3. Oxtail Pho ($24.99) - got a big bowl and it was a decent deal for me. Broth is really flavorful though the meat on the other hand is tough and chewy. It's not easy to bite on it as I believed that they can cook it longer to have that tender meat. I ended up giving to my husband and glad he enjoys it. My friends ordered spring rolls and calamari and was able to try 'em too. Spring rolls are on point and was my favorite appetizer at that time while calamari is a blah & doesn't care for it (not seasoned well and a bit soggy). It was a fun experience and the service is good. The staffs are friendly and they were efficient as well esp. the cashier (Kai Lin). Tables & chairs are provided of you opt to dine in. I can't begin to tell you how long I've been searching for a Vietnamese place that offers escargot, clams and all the street style foods here in Hawaii. PARKING is extremely limited, the lot is taken up mostly by the tables and chairs for Saigon Grill. I can't complain because I do love a place that has ample seating, but it does make parking extremely difficult: The menu offers not only the seafood I came for, but also other rice dishes. Their porkchop and rice was one of the best I've had. Everything was delicious and spot on, my favorites were the top snail in coconut sauce and tamarind escargot. Between the spicy tamarind sauce and coconut sauce from the two dishes, my mouth found some relief from the spice of the spicy tamarind. The only downside is that the items are higher priced for the portion size you receive. I do understand it is a delicacy type of place and also in town but it will cost u a pretty penny. Soooo I wasn't expecting to pay $30 for dinner for just myself at a take out place, buttttt here we are. I got a kalbi plate, which came with jasmine rice and some pieces of lettuce, cucumber and tomato. I also got a sugar cane juice. I drove home with my food a little disappointed that I spent so much money, but when I got home, it was a lot of food and it tasted pretty good. The kalbi was tender and well seasoned. The plate came with 3 pieces of kalbi. Two of them were pretty fatty, but one piece was a good size. The plate it self was heavy because the kalbi was atop a mountain of rice. I was able to split the plate into 2 meals and had left over rice to make fried rice with. The veggies that came in the plate were crispy and the cucumber was cut nicely. For $20, I still felt like it was overpriced, but it helped that it was flavored well and cooked well. The calamansi juice was delicious but $9?!?! Ugh I love sugarcane juice but this is really putting a hole in my wallet. I need to go to Asia soon to get my sugar cane juice fix for like 1/9 of the cost it is here. The cashier was nice and they have a bunch of tables under a canopy set up in the parking lot. Even though this isn't a sit down restaurant, they put effort into pairing the food truck/building and putting in benches and bright lights. It kinda reminds me of a street food vendor, and there are even other food trucks. This place is located in the parking lot between sura and the 24 hour fitness or whatever gym is in the Hawaiian Brian's building. I came here again for another late night grab and was again beyond pleased with my visit. My partner ordered the same as previously, the grilled pork chop plate and it was very flavorful like last time and the everything on the plate just compliments each other perfectly. I got the rice combo again but I asked to change pretty much the whole thing, replacing the kalbi and the pork chop with chicken and shrimp. The cashier was hesitant and told me that the portion would be slightly unfair for the pricing and would need to take off the spring rolls which I happily obliged (no issue at all!). We were paying with cash and realized that we were missing a dollar. My partner asked if we could pay the dollar with phone and the cashier said to not worry about it which was the sweetest thing ever. However, we still decided to ran back to the car to grab the dollar to ensure they take it. The ambiance was a bit different tonight when we visited. Since it is right underneath 24hr fitness AND hawaiian brian's, it can get a bit hectic on event nights. There was a bit of chaos going on at the parking structure near and the area was very busy (popo everywhere too LOL). We went to check out the chaos up stairs while the food was being made (turns out there was a 'celebrity' there). When we came back the food was ready and we happily dug in. I was pleasantly surprised with the presence of the spring rolls on my plate but I didn't question the good faith. Like the cashier said, there is a lot (especially due to my changes), so I was definitely struggling to finish even after some assistance by my partner and starving all day. You've most likely drove past this area a few times and wondered whats there, but there seems to be a handful of trucks/stalls operating there between random hours of the day (you'll have to check their instagrams accordingly). There was parking on site (but i noticed theres another big food truck that used to be in the parking stalls), so now im not sure if they still have parking. Saigon grill is a gigantic pink truck that cant be missed. They have giant TV's and loud music playing too. You will first order from the cashier and they will bring you out the food to your table, which is a cute open air area thats also pet friendly. Prices are very high for Vietnamese food and at the time the menu was quite limited. I originally wanted to get more items on the menu, but it would probably run me a huge credit card bill. I opted for the garlic shrimp which was tasty. My friend got the shaking beef (which prices were comparable to other places). I'm usually pretty picky when it comes to vietnamese food since my parents had a restaurant. i think next time i'll try the more traditional foods instead of garlic shrimp (I actually had to get something that seemed kinda soft aft the time since i had a toothache). I'll definitely come back again now that the menu seem to have expanded a bit. Seen that there was a sugar cane fruit wagon. So I decided to try it! Stood there like an idiot at 1030pm tonjvsaying hello? Hello? Turned to the side door to see inside but no one was there. The workers was enjoying a boba at the table and looked like they was falling asleep. The one facing me seen that I was looking at the food truck and told the girl worker "customer". She helped me. Not much service from her. Rang me up, took my money, made the drink, told me it was ready. Ended up drinking it on the go. Thank god I was in the passenger seat because it was soooo gross. Gross enough to roll down the window and spit it out. The drink itself was watery and could taste much of the flavor from sugar cane, along with the rotten pineapple chunk mixed into my drink made me throw up all night. This was my second time here, and since I had it the first time, I have been craving it. It is a 20-minute walk from the Waikiki area, but you can also drive because there is a parking area right next to it. I've tried many dishes from here and randomly the best one is their Kalbi. You must try the bo lúc lắc as well! The snails are hard to find and pretty good here. A lot of good things I like about this place. We often stop here after riding around town with our Ebikes. A lot of surrons e-bikes come here during the weekend at night. And we get to park our bikes right in front of the wagon. The environment and vibe is quite nice. A lot of outside covered seating. The service is not a problem and they do come out and severe your order to you seating. They open late so it's perfect for our schedule and often go there late nights. I have not tried everything on the menu but from all the pictures it looks really good. I often order the pho combination. The pho broth is really hot here. Great late night spot, we came here around 11:45pm-- they started closing up as soon as we got our food, wonderful service and food despite us coming so last minute!
